The blade had a round handle and due to the speed of the swinging and the dull edge, it twisted.
That's it.
The pig skin in difficult to penetrate if the blades has dull edges. (Lot of such instances in previous episodes)

@@Mercredi00Addams when a sword's edge is sharp, it will cut even with slightly incorrect edge alignment. When it is dull, even hitting perfectly with the edge might turn the sword sideways

true! that would be the easy way, and I think, that was a mistake. They should follow the easy way to work better other things like the guard strength (they were lucky the test was not also on the guard) and blade strength (they were also lucky the test was not some hits on metal or something).

I've seen them do this in a few later episodes... I wish they would just make something like this the standard test, honestly. Much better than the wildly innacurate assessments that come from the judges going ham on hard targets with less than perfect technique.

I replayed Paul's portion on the last test. It appears to me that it couldn't cut because the blade was not angled appropriately. Doug Marcaida hit it flat. I still feel James was the correct man to win.

8:37 I kind of feel he let his wrist roll so that that the broad side of the sword delivered the bulk of the force. Look at the double indentation. Even a blunt blade held tight would have left a deep single indentation.

If you watch it carefully or at a lower playback speed its obvious that he hit it with the edge at full force, then slapped flat against the pig because the blade wouldn't cut, so all the energy of your momentum presses the blade flat against the pig. Maybe he did let his wrist roll on initial contact. But I can imagine that if he feels its his fault (we're all humans after all) that they would simply strike again.

You could see for a split second, the blade's edge scored up the pig, but that little bit of scoring was the only laceration on the pig. And a pig's hide is much tougher than one can imagine.
