4:08 Why is there damage to the mitochondria?
5:03 Can autophagy clean up the damage?
Today we’re going to talk about the most important benefit of autophagy.
    What is autophagy?
Autophagy is a condition where your body is recycling old and damaged proteins in the body. I’m not talking just about hair and muscle. I’m talking about those little enzyme protein machines that do the work of the body. They’re at the cellular level, and they make body tissue.
    Benefits of autophagy:
‱ It decreases the risk of disease
‱ It will help recycle protein as a survival mechanism
‱ It can help reduce pathogens in the body
‱ It protects neurons and heart cells
‱ It gets rid of advanced glycated end products and amyloid plaquing
**The most important benefit of autophagy is anti-cancer.
The difference between a normal cell and a cancer cell has to do with this one thing.
A normal cell has something called mitochondrial respiration.
A cancer cell has damage to this respiratory mechanism. When you damage this system, the cell starts to activate an ancient pathway that’s capable of fermenting glucose without the use of oxygen.
Cancer cells are hungry for glucose. Why would anyone want to consume a lot of sugar or glucose if they have cancer?
But why is there damage to the respiratory mechanism in the mitochondria? My theory is that it has something to do with the DNA that gets damaged. I believe it gets damaged because it's simply not protected. Autophagy may have the ability to clean up this damage in the mitochondria.

It would be more accurate to say he got the Nobel for his work on autophagy rather than for discovering it. Autophagy was discovered in 1963 by Christian de Duve who won the Nobel in 1974: when Ohsumi began to work on autophagy in 1988 autophagy was already known for 25 years !!!
In 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the molecular principles governing autophagy.
Discovering autophagy and discovering the molecular principles governing autophagy are two different things ;)

I’m wondering if IF might be that effective, because it makes it easier to maintain a calorie deficit. Reducing calories while eating 3 meals a day might be more difficult, because you’ll feel less satisfied after each meal as you had to eat less than you’re used to, while IF allows you to eat the usual amount (if not a little bit more) but just for less meals in total. Very interesting.
Back in 2005, I heard Tony Robbins talking about how sugar causes acid and acid causes chronic illness - including cancer.
The statement that hit home was - ''Cancer can only survive in an acid environment''.
Our bodies struggle to keep us in a slightly alkaline state, but a bad diet and polluted environment makes this very difficult.
All of this acid/alkaline stuff ties in perfectly with the Keto lifestyle and the absolute game-changer is intermittent fasting.

Excellent presentation Dr Berg. The facts you brought forth can not only improve health, but save lives. A simple test that everyone should do - pick a day - my day starts Friday evening, I eat my last meal - whatever I want (keto/carnivore), then I don't eat again until Sunday morning. If I want a coffee or tea, go ahead, but avoid calories. Sunday morning have your first light meal, by noon you will feel like a king!... or Queen... try it just once... I used to do this each and every week, it became a very natural thing to do. I now do this a couple times a month as I'm building muscle and training for more strenuous calisthenics and crossfit .

When you got a simpler answer, you know that it's closer to the truth.

    • @afterthesmash
      @afterthesmash Pƙed 2 lety

We _had_ a simple answer for four decades, and it was wrong-headed: too many calories in, too few calories out. As it turns out, to have a vigorous and robust metabolism, it also matters when and how you consume those calories. This is a great deal _less_ simple, but far closer to reality.
You're using "simple" here as a synonym for nicely packaged at the center of your present understanding. Most people do. You're using "simple" as the original +1 works for me, adored by those whose believe that simplicity should be simple. Right. That's why in the true quest for simplicity, it takes an Einstein to show us how to do it properly.
The false belief that simplicity ought to be simple is the reason why society (in the large) fell for the phoney explanation that the core underlying problem was merely calories in, calories out, while evidence amassed for decades that the majority of people subjecting themselves to simplistic calorie-restriction diets-especially as packaged by Weight Watchers-ended up on a long-term treadmill of getting fatter and fatter.
But blame this not on Weight Watchers, but on the faulty willpower of the 80%, because blame is the ultimate rescue of a failed oversimplification, painful rethinking not required.

I just went 22 hours fasting, not eating even the slightest snack.
It is interesting that I came home in the middle of last night from work, feeling just a bit of hunger when I went to bed - yet when I got up today I didn't feel any hunger at all and went about my day for 5 hrs longer, and could have gone probably all day today without eating.
I figure this is because my body is very well fat adapted, even though I've been allowing myself a bit more carbs per day, (of course mindful to not going over 50 grams), since I've gotten down to the weight that I want to be almost 10 mos ago. Is this correct?
