5:03 Can autophagy clean up the damage?
Today weâre going to talk about the most important benefit of autophagy.
What is autophagy?
Autophagy is a condition where your body is recycling old and damaged proteins in the body. Iâm not talking just about hair and muscle. Iâm talking about those little enzyme protein machines that do the work of the body. Theyâre at the cellular level, and they make body tissue.
Benefits of autophagy:
âą It decreases the risk of disease
âą It will help recycle protein as a survival mechanism
âą It can help reduce pathogens in the body
âą It protects neurons and heart cells
âą It gets rid of advanced glycated end products and amyloid plaquing
**The most important benefit of autophagy is anti-cancer.
The difference between a normal cell and a cancer cell has to do with this one thing.
A normal cell has something called mitochondrial respiration.
A cancer cell has damage to this respiratory mechanism. When you damage this system, the cell starts to activate an ancient pathway thatâs capable of fermenting glucose without the use of oxygen.
Cancer cells are hungry for glucose. Why would anyone want to consume a lot of sugar or glucose if they have cancer?
But why is there damage to the respiratory mechanism in the mitochondria? My theory is that it has something to do with the DNA that gets damaged. I believe it gets damaged because it's simply not protected. Autophagy may have the ability to clean up this damage in the mitochondria.

Mr. Ohsumi (a biologist, if im not wrong) actually won a Nobel prize in 2016 for discovering the concept of autophagy. His research started way back in the 1990s. Autophagy is indeed a very important concept that everybody needs to know. Thanks Dr. Berg for the explanation..âșïž
Just had to smile when you used "way back" for the 1990s. You must be young.

It would be more accurate to say he got the Nobel for his work on autophagy rather than for discovering it. Autophagy was discovered in 1963 by Christian de Duve who won the Nobel in 1974: when Ohsumi began to work on autophagy in 1988 autophagy was already known for 25 years !!!
In 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the molecular principles governing autophagy.
Discovering autophagy and discovering the molecular principles governing autophagy are two different things ;)

I started intermittent fasting 3 years ago.
I started out with a 4 day water fast. Started eating only 2 times a day. 12 hours apart. Now I only eat one time a day. And eat healthy. I have lost 30 lbs and feel good.
As a Muslim with Ramadan starting the next day - with obligatory 30 days of dry fasting - I am finding Dr. Eric to be such a Godsend!
That's twelve hours of fasting ( not much )
@@kaykay865 yeah, but, the ratio of dry fasting vs wet fasting is 3:1. and you do it 30 days continuously. Plus the duration of 12 hours in dry fasting is enough for the effect of autophagy when you only drink water at suhoor, (it means you get 20 hours intermittent fasting since last meal on night before). I lost 87 pounds with Intermittent Fasting and autophagy. Trust me, this process works. I'm now normal BMI and hardly get fatigue or severely sick!
did you try losing weight a different way before?
Iâm wondering if IF might be that effective, because it makes it easier to maintain a calorie deficit. Reducing calories while eating 3 meals a day might be more difficult, because youâll feel less satisfied after each meal as you had to eat less than youâre used to, while IF allows you to eat the usual amount (if not a little bit more) but just for less meals in total. If that makes any sense lol
@@MauriceGucci Yes, what you said makes complete sense. I tried many diets like cutting sugar entirely, eating 5 meals a day with food that taste like nothing and not enjoyable. I also tried pills, the YOLI program, doing lots of cardio. It all came back! I wanted to eat well and eat foods that taste good without feeling guilty or hungry an hour later. IF worked the best for me and it keeps the weight off. Plus I enjoy eating my 2 meals a day withoutbhaving to compromise good tasting food, or eating the foods I love! đ€

Very interesting.
Back in 2005, I heard Tony Robbins talking about how sugar causes acid and acid causes chronic illness - including cancer.
The statement that hit home was - ''Cancer can only survive in an acid environment''.
Our bodies struggle to keep us in a slightly alkaline state, but a bad diet and polluted environment makes this very difficult.
All of this acid/alkaline stuff ties in perfectly with the Keto lifestyle and the absolute game-changer is intermittent fasting.
This was some of the benefits I personally got by fasting 5 times per week for 1 year.

Excellent presentation Dr Berg. The facts you brought forth can not only improve health, but save lives. A simple test that everyone should do - pick a day - my day starts Friday evening, I eat my last meal - whatever I want (keto/carnivore), then I don't eat again until Sunday morning. If I want a coffee or tea, go ahead, but avoid calories. Sunday morning have your first light meal, by noon you will feel like a king!... or Queen... try it just once... I used to do this each and every week, it became a very natural thing to do. I now do this a couple times a month as I'm building muscle and training for more strenuous calisthenics and crossfit .
Yes one day fasting, it's great. I would eat an orange the next morning and it was the best tasting orange ever.

Wonderful!
Have your eye floaters completely gone away now or has it just lighten them?
When you got a simpler answer, you know that it's closer to the truth.
We _had_ a simple answer for four decades, and it was wrong-headed: too many calories in, too few calories out. As it turns out, to have a vigorous and robust metabolism, it also matters when and how you consume those calories. This is a great deal _less_ simple, but far closer to reality.
You're using "simple" here as a synonym for nicely packaged at the center of your present understanding. Most people do. You're using "simple" as the original +1 works for me, adored by those whose believe that simplicity should be simple. Right. That's why in the true quest for simplicity, it takes an Einstein to show us how to do it properly.
The false belief that simplicity ought to be simple is the reason why society (in the large) fell for the phoney explanation that the core underlying problem was merely calories in, calories out, while evidence amassed for decades that the majority of people subjecting themselves to simplistic calorie-restriction diets-especially as packaged by Weight Watchers-ended up on a long-term treadmill of getting fatter and fatter.
But blame this not on Weight Watchers, but on the faulty willpower of the 80%, because blame is the ultimate rescue of a failed oversimplification, painful rethinking not required.
Love the breakdown in this video Dr BergđđŸđđŸđđŸ

Thank you Dr Berg ! You are reaching and helping so many improve health.
Thank you. That actually meant a lot.
I am watching this as I am on 24 hours fasting .. currently my body undergoing autophagy phase (15 hours past)
Hi doc: I would like to know if Flaxseed and Chia oils are healthy enough to be included in a Keto diet. Are they good for the liver? Thank you so much for all you do!
@@Diogenes-II The fats of these foods usually doesn't have the anti-nutrients. At least in terms of Oxalates. Flax seed is okay as far as seeds.
@Martin Monsalvo
Avocado and Coconut Oils are still good and readily available and becoming less expensive all the time. Make sure you're taking the Chromium to heal any insulin resistance and your liver can heal.
@@Diogenes-II i am taking chia seed ,mixed with lemon and vinegar in water ..is this against keto diet
Dr Berg is so inspirational and very informative. Started fasting 40 days ago and better Dr Berg and Dr Mindy Pelz both such a wealth of knowledge!! â€â€â€đ
Very pleased to see 0:06 your videos posted more frequently again on CZcams lately!
Thanks for noticing that. Have a nice day!
Been eating 1 meal a day for 2 weeks+ now. Diet is kinda keto if not exactly keto. Lost 11 pounds. Also doing hiit 5 times a week. After 2 weeks, this is easily doable.
Warning- one day at a party I ate some carbs- rice, oily food and alcohol. I was hungry a few hours later. Basically, try to stay away from carbs and sugar.
Just be careful because you're going to be losing a lot of muscles.
Why don't doctors prescribe a coarse of autophagy for cancer patients rather than drug's ? More profit for companies in giving drug's I guess
Absolutely amazing lecturer om aufophagy..love to learn more on this subject.
Very nice and informative detailed video, thanks for ......Dr. Saab.
Can you do a video on the coronavirus? We donât know much about it, but if thereâs anyone I trust to talk about the basic way viruses work and how we can defend ourselves against them , itâs you Dr. Berg.
