  • Kara has been riding for just over 2 years now and her overall MTB skills have really progressed so we decided to take a closer look into learning wheelies and her progress was incredible...
    Kara is using her Lapierre enduro MTB and I am teaching her on my Haibike ALLMTN 7 e bike.
    Kara is learning really fast from learning all of her basic MTB skills and starting to learn more advanced MTB skills.
    We hope that you enjoy this video and find it useful, any questions please comment below!

    Honestly, I think you are into something here. You make a great duo explaining these skills. This is seriously the best wheelie tutorial I have seen. You really understood and addressed my own fears. Having Kara's feedback must help. Love the solution of first practising it while jumping off the back!

      @@waynefisher1544 hmm... I personally think that wheelies are easier on a fully... sounds weird but you get the pop you need from the damper and once you're up it eliminates the smaller bumps from the terrain. The only thing I noticed which was harder was side to side balancing. The damper kicks a bit, that's not bad because you can use the brake for the backwards pop but it actually kicks to the sides too and that makes staying straight a bit harder. It basically feels the same weird way when you're trying to back wheel hop a fully. It kicks backwards, but it also kicks to the sides. Pretty hard to get used to... don't know if you noticed that too, but that was my experience on the back wheel xD

    Fantastic progression! Really love this content from you, Tom. I've used your tutorial videos a lot over the years to pick up new skills and really like your style of teaching. Ben Cathro, you and Seth from Berm Peak are, imo, the go-to youtube coaches. Great work by KJ there too. Coincidentally, I'm also currently trying to teach myself to wheelie having never learned when i was a kid. People make it look easy, but it's not. It takes a lot of practice and determination and progress is slow. And fair play to KJ - leaning off the back of your bike and sitting in that tipping point at first is a scary place to be!

    Good one! Learning by addressing some of the sources of fear is great. I've wondered why you haven't done that with learning how to bail from skinnies. There was the slam on Sam's backyard skinny, and then I remember a few comments on other skinnies along the lines of Kara not knowing how to bail from them. The logical response seemed to be to learn how to bail from them, and it would make another good video (or series).

      @@TomCardy but maybe you two should wait with the manuals until she really gets the rear brake feel dialed. I mean, you probably think that way too but I just wanted to point that out because a heavy hit on the back because of falling over the rear could scare her off. But she really does make extremely good progress! Stoked on the next videos of her riding better and better, I knew she would get there fast! To be fair, she probably has one of the best teachers to learn basically everything 😂

    One thing i used to do was to set the pedal a little higher and from stationary with one leg push the pedal to get the bike somewhere around balance point while keeping my bum on the seat and try to get the other foot on and sit there at balance point. This is a great way to learn to take both feet on and off the pedals and to know roughly where to balance your body. The rest is all rear brake control and smoothness of pedalling during the wheelie

    I was so excited when you made it off with two feet the first time. After that it became easier than jumping off a treadmill =P Surprised all that progress happened in one day. Jumping off confidence and brake coverage practice. Then couch potato flopping back and remembering not to actually forget to jump off if needed ;) Then the gradual slow pedal input. All great tips and I want to see day 7 when you master it.

    @casual-mtb-veiwer_782 Před 2 lety +1

    I think committing is one of the hardest things. I was in the park practicing manualing the other day. If I didn't fully mentally commit than I didn't get high enough or I messed up and went to the side. For me accepting the risk of falling off the back is a big hurdle to get over. I can do it sometimes but sometimes I doubt my ability to save myself off the back and that is what I think holds me back the most from constantly committing. Great feeling though when you can get your wheel up for a couple seconds or even loop out.
