- Iva W. is a custom refitted and restored 1929 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat. She started her life shorter vertically, and as a workboat hauling crabs and oysters in the bay.
In 1998, the IVA W was converted from her original low-slung, efficient workboat into a floating Bed & Breakfast. The original pilothouse was lifted off the hull, and a new galley level was added, before the pilothouse was installed above, and forward of her original position. The original, sleeping quarters / galley which was directly aft of the pilot house, was extended to create a larger space. After 6 years of modification, followed by 2 years In Florida, she returned home to the Chesapeake Bay, where she spent the next 4 years idle, and falling into disrepair.
In January 2010, the Current Owner stumbled across a Craigslist listing for a vintage buyboat in need of serious attention and repairs. His first Impression upon seeing her, was that it would simply be too much work, too many dollars, and would require a skillset way above that which he possessed. But then he began to see the potential, and within 2 months, he was starting work on her. Over the years, she has been completely refit, and outfitted to make her the most comfortable boat possible. The systems the current owners have implemented have been designed to make her operable by a single sailor. Every comfort has been added to ensure that when their family is on board, it is an amazing experience. All systems have been replaced, A/C and heat have been added throughout, and she is quite easy to operate. She has been completely restored to the highest standards of comfort and safety, while maintaining the integrity of her honorable past. The current owners recognize they are merely the latest in a very short line of stewards who have had the privilege and honor of working her, enjoying her, sharing her, and most importantly, protecting her.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

As an old Chesapeake Bay sailor, I can tell you that this beauty, with all the wooden brightwork, would keep you busy taking care of it. I remember when my dad’s Chris Craft was mostly wood, we’d spend hours sanding and varnishing the wood every spring to make it ready for the summer season. Fiberglass may have no soul, but it’s sure easier. You may “love all the wood” when you’re touring someone else’s boat, but if you were responsible to keep it shining, you’d lose your mind.
Nothing beats WOOD!
Plastic chuck aways are just that.
@@KenDavies-qv3fs wood is sure beautiful!
As a retired marine engineer i have to say that if I bought this boat I would have to remove the top deck superstructure,it looks top heavy, cumbersome and really spoils the lines of what is otherwise an attractive little boat.Roly 🇬🇧
I feel like she wud need a heavy weighted keel or stabilizers something before I'd feel comfortable in her
I prefer the extra living space! Obviously you never have lived aboard a boat!
It has a 9' deep keel and heavy 14 ton ballast.
Either way i agree ,those here talking ,have never been in 40 plus knts winds. And 50 ft wawes,,top got to go ,unless u want a house boat..
@@ThePatgilbert
17' keel and torpedo 17 ton ballast
Definitely a cabin feel. Really nice.
Interesting to see the Iva W again , about 7 years ago I built the windows and doors on the upper pilot house and some other work. My brother in law rebuilt the round stern and engine . That is a true old school engine giant size and slow turning. I hope the new owner realize
How much surface area a boat like this has when it’s time to paint and varnish.
I'm a wood boat guy and i want to say you guys did a wonderful job on her And yes there is going to be a lot of work needed to keep her in her current condition my last bout was a 1953 bull nose Chris Craft 53 foot with twin 440 Chryslers and one of only 4 with an aft cabin .
That's awesome! You all did an amazing job. 👏
More than the surface area she takes up in the water for sure✌🏼💗😊⛵
So how much work each month do you think it would take to up keep it for one person new to the whole thing?
@@kevinday193 Well it's in new condition now so Depending on the water conditions every few months have a bottom cleaning service come and clean the hull of growth on the bottom and a wash above the water line as when needed .run a systems check once a month including running the engine .and always keep a look out for the bright work and keep it clean and polished and for the wood work always check for weathering .and do all the basic maintenance on time and you should be good for a year or more the other thing you have the hull cleaners look at is the zincs .these are most important .and take it out once and awhile and give it some run time .and always look in the bilges every time your on board and look for any sign of water stains or standing water .as time goes buy you will need to sand and re varnish all the wood as it weathers .doing cleaning and maintenance on a wooden boat is the most important thing for a wooden boat If this is not done things can and will go bad very quickly .
Whaaaat! 150k! Nice boat for sure! I can see why you loved it so much… 👍
Hello Jordan, I just wanted to tell u that I am very amazed at how u cover a tour video for people like us who love boats, coz I have watched some bloggers who were a little stiff r sometimes dragging their cam backward and forward that makes dizzying to some viewer's, there were even times that they just concentrate of certain areas they just wanted to show,.. For more than two years I've been watching u with ur beautiful wife randy, and it goes so smoothly and detailed, how will you attract a buyer if you don't know how to show the video clearly from the starting point down to the last part of it,.. so pls keep it up thats two 👍👍 for u.
I live in the thimble Islands, long island sound ct. A few years ago there was a gathering of a cruising club where approximately 100 beautiful yachts both sail and power that anchored in the shelter of the islands. All the boats were impeccably maintained and uniquely different. This vessel was one of the fleet. Never had I seen so many stunning yachts laying at anchor in my back yard. And the next morning.....they were all gone.
what a spectacular boat. Thanks for sharing...
Absolutely the most amazing I have ever seen on one of these tours.
This boat belongs in a museum,,,,!!
It’s beautiful look at the wood working amazing
Incredible boat. I could definitely liveaboard that beauty.
This is a boat 4 living, not 4 boating. Gorgeous...!
Love that boat. Beautiful. Thx. Great vid. Would love to have this in Florida to cruise the coast to Mexico and back year round. Good price.
Utterly magnificent.
Very nice!!
Wow good to see Randy again but yes that is an awesome boat
Interesting old Caterpillar engine, both electric start and pony engine start. That old iron will run forever.
Cruising Speed: 7 - 10 Knots @ 600 RPM.
WOW, what an awesome engine. Will last for a very very long time.
Love this boat!
Yea it's an odd boat, character galore. The top wheel and cabin area, reminds me of a tree house. Love the wood work. How nice, it would be to take on nice cruise. Yea, it looks top heavy, it's not the kind of craft you would take out in rough seas. Plus I bet it requires a lot of maintenance. Anyone that gets a boat like this has to be committed to it. More like a life style, than just a boat. I think it's wonderful. I love the engine room as well. Thank you for the video
I think that 1,000kg of diesel engine & generator etc so low in the boat would lower the centre of gravity quite well. Windage on the other hand…..
Love it beautiful boat, love it well done.
Beautiful live aboard
That's a boat. Thanks for putting it up
Have to be a Billionaire to afford the upkeep on a 1929 boat! Beautiful museum piece.
Very special vessel 🙌
Grazie ...avete sempre barche interessanti. Thank! You have always interesting boats
It's beautiful
A True labor of love. !!!
Groovy classic boat
Great boat
Man that's a cool one. Good to meet you at the SLV meet n greet at the boat show. Waiting on that dragonfly tour ;)
Cool boat to live on for sure . Maybe putt around in the marina on the weekend even to show off such a classic...it's like a mini ship house cabin all in one
Very interesting boat. I like when you tour these types of boats because I would never have looked at it in person.
What a great live abord or a Vacation home But more boat then a house. Beautiful I want it butttttt
Love it!
Great show ! Had no idea you folks were north of north 🙂 I see another human too !! Congrats - Wishing you the Best. Happy Thanksgiving.
Amazing character on a very old boat with an amazing history.... Perfectly built for the Chesapeake or other well protected waters. The *only* thing that would really make me worry (and would be part of a very VERY thorough survey if I were going to seriously pursue this vessel) would be that diesel. It's ancient and, based on where it's located in the hull, would likely be prohibitively expensive to re-power should it catastrophically fail.
This is going to be someone's ultimate awesome vessel and I hope the new owners have a great time with it.
The top deck is a perfect captains quarters.
Almost any motor that seems impossible to remove/replace an be done piecemeal. Dismantle both old and new motor then replace. Takes a while, but ...
Cat still produce most parts for engines of that age so don't see it as a problem.
It turns so slow she might outlast the hull.
Living aboard, and sharing occasionally, would make life a pleasure.
The forward betting area would immediately become my art studio, the rest of the boat would stay pretty much the same. Amazing for that price! Even if you never left the dock it would be an awesome home.
Ready to sell a farm and aquire such a vessel. Want to do the Great Loop. Any takers. This is not a freak think. It's a loop thing . Any takers as a potential partner
@@user-uu6tl8gl2w Damn. Tempting. I have one too many irons in the fire at the moment, but my time is approaching to do the same thing. Good luck William! I hope you find a Lt. Dan to your Cap'n Gump adventure! (meant in the most positive and fun way)
From outside this looks exactly like a traditional SE Asian fishing boat. That part of the world is covered with them: Big two story house on the back, clear forward for working, no idea about the interior of the Asdian ones, but I would presume a big hold for the catch more or less where that forward doghouse sits on the deck. They are usually set up for both purse net and trawling, and have some sail capability although i never saw one under sail, so it might be purely foir stabilization.
Lotta work keeping her up.
It's a work of Art
Спасибо за интересные проекты траулерных яхт
Cool Factor - 10 out of 10.
That was one of the best presentations I ever saw with a complete description and enough information for a potential buyer !
A lot of these brokers should sit down and watch your video with a pen and note pad and take notes.
I can’t tell you how discouraging it is to look at a vessel for sale and not know the complete description of it and for that reason I just move on to the next seller ! 🤷🏻♂️
Beautiful and in pristine condition. But I would suggest a couple of important lay-out adjustments before anything. Like transforming the lower double bed into another head, ending the extra passway on the main deck, which imposes ducking when below and adding a head to the master cabin (no problem to expand aft). That being said, it look heavy and unstable. I can see her in rivers and lakes.
We put some planks in her and a Stb covering board in her in 2007-8 in Beaufort, NC. What a massive engine.
150k is GREAT for that boat the interior wood working is beautiful!
When I win the lottery or other luck - be contacting you re this classic beauty!! Thank you 🥰
It looks like it would be top heavy.
The boast was sitting in Poquoson va last time i was there about a month ago. Nice lines and a eye catcher.
This same boat
Beautiful boat. As an ex Carver Mariner owner and soon too be a boat owner again, this definitely takes to much time for the upkeep on it. I'd never have time too enjoy the water.
The price is a sin. Worth much more. I lived on working boats 9 months a year, up the inside passage working the Barring sea. If you know nothing of boats haul it out and beach it. Less cost of a new home or RV. Beautiful
The boat was cool and all, but Jordan striking the pose with the pipes behind him... that deserves an upvote by itself.
Like it!
That make a great houseboat
I think it’s great as a docked live aboard. Plenty of room
It is what it is... big, elegant and a great live aboard/party barge. Or for the day coast touring boat... rent it for a wedding... many uses and all on the water.
Grand boat.
Looks top heavy and i bet the movement of the boat would be felt massively in that top "owners" cabin. Lovely woodwork though.
To add value and for me make the boat better would be to make the galley area much smaller and at the other end (where the seating area now is ) and convert the former galley space into a much larger lounge and eating area. Drawback of course would be taking apart all the beautiful varnished cupboards etc.
I like the city engines and fuel tank and stuff in generators.
Structural beams with knots
Man that's a cool boat and cheap
Had a 36 rough water trawler perkins turbo diesel only 600 hours for our first home after married. We both loved those days.
What a beautiful boat! Not for poor folk, but gosh Gatsby take me home!
Cool boat. It looks like it can be blown right over and very top heavy. But I’m sure there is enough below to stabilize it. Lots of windage so could be fun in a marina. Yes, beautiful “character” boat. Main reason for price is that an all wood boat like this is a lot of maintenance that most today don’t care to take on. But I am sure it will appeal to the wood boat enthusiast.
I thought exactly the same... very high on the water with a draft of only 1.5 meter. But I guess she hasn't capsized in the past 90 years though, so she is probably okay ;-)
@@janentomenkafka Good point!
@@janentomenkafka but has it been anyhjng but a live aboard since taken so high?
@@norml.hugh-mann I don't think we had boats around here that were built to be a live aboard 90 years ago. Don't know about the US though.
@@norml.hugh-mann She was built a a buy boat. The top deck may have been added when she was converted.
Super cool lovin it
Top heavy dock boat
I could live on it!
Grand lady 👍
I WOULD HAVE PUT A MASTER BEDROOM DOWN FRONT!! BEAUTIFUL BOAT THROUGH OUT!!
That's a lot of windows to keep clean.
I’ve lived on a few big motor yachts and I loved every minute of them. That boat is one nice boat but keeping up with all that wood is a full time job, been there done that. But sweeeet!
She is beautiful
top of my list so far it is a beautiful boat, i could live on this one.
1:41 You'd be surprised how much putting a sail up in the fore, once properly adjusted, will help keep the boat on track and steering true, you might pick up a knot or two as well as see a (usually) slight drop in fuel consumption; sometimes not so slight~ depending on the sails, the winds, the currents, the vessel's shape and structure.
Not so great when frequently turning/changing coarse, but if you have an extra hand tending just to that it ain't so bad (this is usually a great job for the 12-14 year old on board; it's not a _"hard job"_ but important enough and requires just enough judgement to make it somewhat fulfilling when done well).
If she could talk. Beautiful. Whoever did the restoration did a great job. I'm no expert, but that seems like a good price. But boats, especially wooden boats, ain't cheap to maintain.
Shame she isn't a blue water cruiser.
Beautiful interiors and definitely comfortable.
Have fun you guys!
Every boat does not need to a blue water candidate.
WOW
I could easily live on it.
I hope the captain never has to go in reverse. Beautiful boat.
I fully agree with Roll and Dunk- this high center of gravity makes this boat a death trap. It should be painfully obvious that this boat is totally unsafe. Pass!
Retired carpenter here who rebuilt a few 30'+ CC's and owns a log cabin in the woods, I don't have enough pain meds to own such a cool looking boat.
Question. How do you back up as that pilot house only has front viewing windows?
Hollywood should buy her for movies when they want a prop for 100 years ago.
My dad had a 1913 75ft teak and mahogany boat kind of like this one, that was used to take stock brokers to work in Manhattan. It was BEAUTIFUL. I’ve always wanted to buy it back, but the guy won’t sell it. Plus, it’s like over a million now and I can’t afford that for sure. THIS, For 150k!!! I’d buy it tonight if my wife wouldn’t murder me. Is it still for sale. I may roll the dice…. It’s stunning. Do the engine run? What’s the catch???
Obviously you’re not accustom to older boats, you missed some of the most significant things to the boat without comment. I agree with you, this boat is beautiful and a great full time job for a knowledgeable boatwright. FYI this boat should never leave its current climate..
What are you shooting with mate?
Looks a little top heavy.stabilitytest? Very pretty boat
with how much houses cost nowadays this is a steal
Shes a beauty would make a great houseboat
Great video 📸 great boat 🚢
Even if it were free, a wooden boat is never cheap.
If you had a dock and wanted to live on it for ten years it would be fairly cheap housing. Then just sell it for scrap and don't ever bother spending money on maintenance
I own two wooden boats and several GRP. Maintenance cost is equal and so are refits.
There are thousand year old trees out there, so wood is actually quite durable. Looking after things doesn't always mean spending lots of money, its about understanding the material used and being sympathetic to it when running your 'maintenance ' . We've owned an Ally boat, wooden boat and fiberglass boat in recent years, most of the costs incurred will likely be similar on each, and often down to something we might have done wrong . Yes boats are expensive in some ways but a wooden boat doesn't have to be more so than others
@@alwilkins9467 There are people that get as much joy working on a boat as sailing it. You sound like one of those. Everyone knows that big wooden boats are more labor intensive than fiberglass, steel, aluminum or even concrete. Wooden boats are pretty and I like to look at them but no one is going to fall for the line that all maintenance expense and energy is similar. It is absolutely not true.
I would need reassuring about it's stability
Great boat, Great price. But I've learned my lesson. I'd love to go out in this boat as long as I'm not responsible for maintaining it.
Hi bud,
I love this boat and the price lol.
Where is she currently moored ?
The sail isn't for sailing. It's for keeping the boat from rolling back and forth in a beam sea, which can get very uncomfortable with all that top structure. The sail acts as the keel on a sailboat, sort of, by buffering the rolling motion as it scoops air back and forth. many workboat types use them.
This is an incredible boat! It is easy to see this as a live-aboard but the cost of operation would be cost prohibitive and that's IF diesel fuel would be available for it in the foreseesble future. Even at the rediculously optimistic price of $5 / gallon of fuel, it would run $1,200 to fill it up and that would only take you, at best, 500 miles? I think this may explain the very favorable asking price. It sure is nice to look at , though.
And it's high maintenance and a money pit to maintain cool boat for someone with deep pockets
Just for future vids. There is no "description below" on most TV streaming CZcams apps.
Had to go grab my phone for your "description below" stuff.
Amazing boat though. Thanks for bringing it to us
On my Windows PC, the "description below" was right below.
@Dan Moyer I went to my PC right after posting. Only letting you know how it shows up on smartTVs just so you were aware in case you wanted to adjust to work with them. It's not expected, things are changing every day across the board with tech. But if you didn't know then you'd just never know.
Lastly. My brother in law Travis Moyer lives in Central PA, married to my sister Elizabeth (Beth). Don't hear the name often so was just curious.
Thanks for your time. Thank you for your videos.
