- Both the new 2022+ Toyota Tundra and 2024 Toyota Tacoma have fallen flat. Both have left true Toyota enthusiasts pretty disappointed. Sure you have some Fanboys out there that will hype it until they’re blue in the face, but they’re also getting free handouts from Toyota. So why should they adjust their tune?
Which of these two Fails do you think was WORSE for Toyota’s reputation? The 2022-2024 Tundra or 2024 Tacoma? Forcing smaller displacement motors and slapping turbos to them isn’t helping anything. Sure you may get 1-3 MPGs more but you’re getting a far less reliable truck. But perhaps that’s by design? Hmm 🤔
Toyota spending less to build these Tacomas yet they’re charging 20-25% more compared to the last generation. The 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro is $13-14K more than last year’s TRD Pro. Blows my mind!
The new Thndra hasn’t sold well at all. People claims it’s selling great now due to their high volume couple of months. They only had those months because they had a HUGE backlog of Tundra inventory across the US. Dealers had no choice but to SLASH prices and offfer great APRs. People don’t love the new Tundra and that’s abundantly clear. Same goes for the all-new Tacoma. Which is a total shame if you ask me…
What do we need to see from Toyota in order for them to succeed? What would truly make you want to buy a new Tundra or Tacoma in 2024-2025?

Moving Tacoma assembly to Mexico was the last straw. Buying a Tacoma that was built in the USA... helping a fellow American put food on the table... WAS pretty awesome.

It’s a shame… it’s as if some manufacturers are oblivious.
What I think will happen will be a shift from the fully padded up models to the lower trims with smaller margins. The oems and dealers have been very resistant because the higher trims fatter margins. But lot rot and increasing costs of inventory floor plans will FORCE them to change. They are clawing and kicking all the way but in the end the demand ain't their for the higher priced models.

What year Tundra?
I am an engineer, and when I changed jobs to the automotive industry, one of my first projects was equipment installs for parts that would end up on the 2024 Tacoma. I was coming up on needing a new vehicle, and was super excited to pick up one of the 2024 Tacomas since I had a hand in their production, as I've always liked Toyotas. I was eager for this truck the entire time I was working on the project and was even ready to settle on the turbo 4, cause I could look at the truck in my driveway and say I did a part of that.
About a week ago was when I finally got my new truck. A Nissan Frontier Pro 4X. That's what I thought of the new Tacomas and their pricing.
Keep speaking the truth. I hope Toyota listens.
I would say the Tundra is worse (for now) because its engines are exploding. The Tacoma was most disappointing though due to price.
Would never buy a truck where every day I would be worrying about the repair cost of an engine implosion after the warranty runs out.
my local dealership only has ONE tacoma with a blown engine waiting on a new one.just one out of maybe 20 they have sold isn't really that bad.still under warranty tho, since it is a 2024 model

My son works as a mechanic at our local dealer and he has warned everyone he knows not to even think about getting a new Tundra or Taco. The quality and engineering is pure shit. His biggest complaint is all the plastic mechanical parts all over the truck. Parts that just a couple of years ago were all metal are now plastic. A guaranteed repair, plus they have designed the new engines to be nearly impossible for owners to do even a minor repair. Its nearly as bad for the certified mechanics.

If you gave me the choice of a 2024 Tacoma or Frontier. I would pick the frontier EVERY time without thinking twice.
I test drove a used 2023 Frontier FX4 Pro. I was very impressed. It felt larger then my sons 2019 Taco (Which I love) the Frontier had really good power, i really, really liked it. I must say I’ve had new and used Datsuns and Nissans since mid 1970’s which I enjoyed but they never were as reliable as all the Toyotas I’ve owned. So if I bought one I would hold my breath that it last with few issues

Even if the new taco still had the v6 the new price is unacceptable. The price is THE only reason MOST people aren’t buying them.
Give the sales person your walk out the door $ If he or she doesn't accept it, start walking out the door. They always stop you to negotiate a better $ Especially if it's the end of the month.

I hear you for sure, 10,000-15,000 over the last model (2023). But dealerships get pretty desperate if they don't make there quota at the end of the month.

I don’t agree. Sure the uninformed are stopping purchase over price however smarter people are stopped by the crappy construction and the engine. Either way sales are slowing. My 2015 Tacoma TuRD will probably be harder to sell because of Toyotas bad reputation. It’s a good truck.
I think it’s pretty obvious the recall with the Tundra is not a factory machining mistake. It’s a design flaw with the engine itself. But they’re never going to admit to that. I think in time, these trucks are going to do more damage to the brand than they ever thought possible.
I still have my 2014 Tundra V8 5.7L CrewMax 4x4. With 100k miles on her, she still running great, not a single issue. There is NO chance in hell I’m upgrading to fu-man-chundra…

My 08 has 600000 km still runs strong with no issues. Bought a 2022 it’s been good but it’s not the 08 and I still have it for the grunt work.
Excellent comment about the look tough fad we are seeing. Too much use of cheap plastic grilles and thin dent-easy panels. Most of the trucks today could not withstand a sparrow strike, but hey, it has heated seats for those Applebee's cowboys.
I bought a 22 Frontier Pro-4X for $41K loaded and now have almost 45,000 miles on it with not one single issue. Glad I did, and love the truck. I put my money on a solid V6.

My uncle has a 22 Frontier as well with 48k miles in it but the transmission clunked out already... He said is was made my Mercedes-Benz and they want a fuk load of money to change it out or fix it without warranty. Engine is decent on Nissan, but Nissan can never get it right with transmissions. The new Tacoma is stupid, but I still see it outlasting anything else. A friend of mine has a new GMC and that pos is worse. Electrical issues, cam phasers broke, and he broke a tie rod already 😂... I mean the tie rod could have been him, but still... if you think Toyota is bad, there's always GM 😅.

Toyota sold us out! Nissian Frontier will still offer a revamped 3.8 V-6 in 2025 and this is after the new turbo 4 cylinder comes out in their redesigned 2025 Frontier… you know why… they are giving their customers a freaking choice!!!! Toyota I have been with you since 1986 and have three Toyota’s in my garage as we speak.. 2005 4 Cylinder access cab 2 wheel drive 216,000 miles on it… 2022 TRD OFF Road Premium 10,000 miles and 2024 4 Runner TRD PRO 260 miles. I would not spend one freaking dime anymore on that junk they are rolling out to us on the production line! Keep it going UT!!! Don’t listen to anyone else on the platform of Toyota’s!!!
So true. Frontiers have been underrated and disrespected for years. The Nissan frontier is a quality product that is as good or better than the prior generation Tacoma. Now there’s no contest.

I remember when my friend purchased a new 1987 Nissan 4x4 reg cab V6 with stick...it had bucket seats and electric windows...he took me out to Crystal Lake rec area two weeks later and drove through tons of mud and it ran well for years ..150 k when he changed the clutch

Still don't know why toyota went all in on these high-pressure four bangers. Why not give an option on four or six cylinders. On a midsize 4x4, I would rather have a V6.

I know toyota engineers had their hands tied on what engines they could offer on the tacomas. But dropping a reliable, popular V6 motor? The Frontier or Ridgline looks more appetizing for me.
@@datdog1223 i think we are going to see frontiers and ridgelines get more expensive than they already are. I know if i wanted a small p u i would look at those before the Tacoma. Never drove the frontier but the 3.5 liter v6 in my daughter accord man that drives so smooth with very nice acceleration. hopefully Honda don't take away the v6 like they did in accord.
I got an opportunity to ride in a ridgeline with the 3.5 L. More than enough power to get around and smooth power band. The swing out tailgate option is a genius idea.
Toyota is obviously seeing things differently. After ruining the Highlander, they proceed on do doing the same with the 4 Runner and Tacoma.
I have some friends who have their BMW's and wonder why I have an 09 Lexus RX350. They go to the dealer to look at a trouble light, and walk out at the very least, $700 plus in the hole. Me, change the oil, brakes, tires, and I keep driving and driving. No repairs, no trouble light, knocks or clicks. Today, if your car or truck has a problem, it will cost you dearly whether it's a dealer or the one man shop down the street. I want my money in my pocket! These new cars and trucks are just a 2nd mortgage payment waiting to happen. Seems like we just lost the last car company that gave us that great product we all use to love.

@@sidallen685 So fewer trucks were recalled than were sold? If debris was causing the failures, why are they almost always at between 20k and 30k miles (aside from replacement engines). How is this debris so consistent in waiting until 20 to 30,000 miles into ownership before deciding to destroy the main bearings? Why did it take Toyota 3 model years to react and why did they exclude 2024's from the recall when there are tons of 2024's with engine failure now? Recalling half of 3rd gen Tundras doesn't exactly impress people that just bought a new Tundra or were excluded from the recall without explanantion.
My co-worker's husband is a master auto mechanic who has work Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA since the late 1990. Just a FYI, Longo Toyota is a member of the Penske Automotive Group and the largest Toyota dealership in the U.S. His advise to me is DO NOT BUY THE CURRENT GENERATION OF THE TACOMA WITH THE TURBO-CHARGED 4 CYLINDER!

In fact, the dealership has already stop purchases of 2024 Tacoma's in excess of its 2024 allocations as they don't want to deal with the large number of Tacomas coming back with bad engine problems.

Debris in the engine, what a joke. Even if it is debris left in the engine, that’s the worse thing you can do to an engine, the irresponsibility and lack of everything regarding quality control, etc, etc,etc. so I suspect something way bigger than that.

This whole Tundra engine issue is the exact reason we did a new 5th gen 4Runner this past winter versus a new Land Cruiser or waiting for a 4Runner…. Full stop. Life time Toyota guy, so when bro’s bash me for talking critically about the new turbo engines I roll my eyes. Hell, we have an old, ‘98 Avalon that runs like a top, over 200k miles, rides like new, no squeaks or rattles… that’s the shit that I loved about Toyotas, same with all of my former Land Cruisers, Tundra, FJ Cruiser…. Over it with the new stuff.

This is what is ruining 4wd vehicles are these people that want the ride of cute utes and all this unneeded technology that is going to be useless and non serviceable in 10 years. I had a 100 series Land Cruiser, considered to be a pretty solid vehicle. The touch screen for the HVAC went in the fritz 6 or seven years ago and even that was not really repairable. We are blessed with endless options out there. Everyone should get a vehicle that suits them. Some of us just like simple, durable, low upkeep, well built, tough vehicles. The 5th gen has that in spades.
I’m a delivery driver in SoCal and see a bunch of Tacomas both new and old and I can tell you the previous gen just looks so much more stout durable compared to the new ones.

They’ve been built in Mexico for decades. Sorry to point out the obvious, but all the hate on these new tacomas is completely unjustified. I bought a trd OR at $43K… that’s cheaper than my gen 3 was, and it’s a better truck in every single measurable way.
@@kevinbradley8613 The first gen Tacos were made in Fremont, California, the second gens were made there until 2010 before Taco production moved to San Antonio, Texas for the 2010 model year. The third gen Taco was the last to be made in America as they were made in Texas from 2016 until production began moving in 2020 to Mexico. The 4th gen Taco is the first to be made entirely in Mexico.
@@brianmola711there’s plenty of people with 3rd gen tacos made just Mexico and they have had no quality issues. To be fair though the only Toyotas I’d ever buy are the ones made at the tahara factory in Japan, aka the 4Runner, Land Cruiser and GX/LX.
I bought a 2023 Toyota tundra limited in may of 2023. In one year that truck was in the dealership shop 7 different times for issues with the truck and 3 more times for recalls. A total of 10 times in 12 months. Had the front suspension fail, two sensors in the steering wheel fail, had a issue with the turbo, went in three different times for the compressor with the air ride suspension and the last problem the rear differential went out. Needless to say I had the truck cleaned up running tip top and traded it in a few weeks ago. Because people still believe in Toyota reliability. Laughable. It was my first time buying a Toyota product. This tundra I had will be the last Toyota product I buy. The last.

@@carcrashesq 2024 gmc sierra at4 with the Duramax diesel. People hate that truck especially other brand fan boys. But the difference in the two trucks is night and day. The Toyota interior does not even sniff the interior of the gmc. The diesel engine has a couple quirks. But I’m shooting for 500k miles out of it. Time will tell.
I drive a 2010 Tundra. It has 172,000 miles. Never getting rid of it.

One of the Toyota dealerships in Tucson keeps calling me to trade in my 2017 Tacoma for a 2024 and I told them, no way. Bring back the V6 and then we can talk.
Have you gone in and checked out the 2024. Was at the dealer last week and the new 2024 was better in every way to the 2019 Taco I just traded in. Except for price, but everything is more expensive, but most people are also making more money so it is what it is.
You have nailed it. I do think Toyota will change & re-think this mess. Years ago Consumers Report tore Toyota a new ass about the fucked up Camry. Went from their customer #1 CR annual rating to basically junk status. TOOK 1 YEAR and Toyota noticed and changed Camry back to its #1 rating. So, as big a corporation as Toyota is, change can be done in a single year. Let's hope they do is again.
Which is the bigger turd? Tough call, but I'd have to go with the Tundra and an expectation of finer finishes (and an engine that doesn't blow up) with the premium price tag. So much plastic inside a $70k+ vehicle. And the smaller back seats, even if they were better vehicles, are deal breakers for me. And I've got to admit, the plastic grills look so cheap IMO.
Agree. Plus... the Tundra doesn't have bumpers. Take a look at the rear of the truck. Where other fullsize trucks have standard full width, replaceable bumpers... the Tundra has wrap-around plastic and bodywork. Totally useless AND it looks terrible.

Agreed, I also think the competition has become better which has also lowered the Tacoma standings. I imagine within 3 years the Tacoma will not be viewed the King of the mid size market
In high school I had a Nissan hard body pickup. That truck was indestructible. The engine was bulletproof. I put 300k on that truck and it was still running fine when I sold it. Not made like that anymore. Although that first gen Titan was a really reliable truck.
Toyota needs to (can't believe I'm saying this) follow Ram's lead and offer a Classic line for the Tundra, 4Runner, and Tacoma with the 5.7, 4.0, and 3.5 respectively.
I guess that Tacoma stock pile is a U.S problem? Up here in Canada they are hard to come by.

My very first brand new car was a 1979 Corolla liftback. Drove it almost 20 years. Now we are about to retire next year and were planning on buying a new 4Runner as our last car. Now I'll have to either buy used, buy Nissan, or die early!

I've got a 2017 4Runner and I'm about ready to buy something new. I'm looking at LC, 4R, and the Tacoma. The problem is that none of the new versions have anything that excites me enough to get out of a 7 year old 4Runner. My local dealer sent me an offer on a Tacoma Trailhunter - $68, 400! I paid just under $40k for my TRD Offroad Premium 4Runner. Then I put another $5k in lift , wheels, and tires to get the ride where i want it. Sure, my lifted 4R is a slug and after 7 years it has given me ZERO problems. I have to ask myself if jumping into a 4Cyl/Hybrid platform is worth it. I do take my truck offroad, dozens of miles from pavement. I really do feel like my current 7yo 4Runner will last longer than a new one. I've been buying Toyotas for 25 years and the the very thing that keeps me coming back seems to have disappeared.
I have to agree with you one hundred percent, I have a 2016 4runner trail with kdss that I've totally decked out as an overland vehicle and my daily driver. Like you, I've sunk thousands into my 4runner and have had zero problems with her. To be honest, I think the new 4runnner has lost its identity. It looks too much like the Tacoma, and that four cylinder I have to question. With only 54000 kms on her and still looks factory new, I'm thinking I'll probably keep her for a few more years yet and enjoy the fruits of my labor 😅😅. Good luck with your decision, but I'm curious to know what you're going to do 😊

I love my 2023 Tundra! I love the V6 Twin Turbo with 10 speed transmission. The driving experience is just hands down the best! I am so happy I bought this Truck and I also love modifying this truck…. Just fun on every aspect.

Why would you want to buy one at this point. They say 2024 are not jncluded😅, until they sell all of them, then recall notice. It is on you if you do. What a nightmare. Oh the repair waiting list is going to be stupid due to shortage, I see that coming.

I paid $34k for my TRD OR manual back in 2017. The same spec in 2024 is $43.4k.
These numbers actually perfectly match inflation (28% since 2017).
I'm not sure people complaining about the prices realize how much inflation happened during Covid. If anything, the last model years of the 3rd generations were underpriced.
As a longtime Toyota fan, I wouldn't touch the new Tundra or Tacoma even if I could afford one. I'll stick with my 2006 Tundra 4.7L AC 4wd Limited and my 1993 Land Cruiser.

these new turbo charged motors would be problematic I'll keep the 2021's for a long time and let Toyota sort out this mess. I real think Gen 2 Tundras will go up in value due to there

ive been waiting to buy a taco since the start of covid. I guess I have to start looking at used ones as I will not buy a 4 banger charged mid size for 50k+ onscene, especially if you're not getting quality like before. Keep up the videos, they inform a lot of people now.
What bothers me is what Untamed touched on. I’ve lived off buying second hand reliable Toyotas with 80-100k miles. I would consider myself middle class. I would be scared to death to buy a newer model Tundra or Tacoma in a few years with 100k miles knowing I’m gonna take the brunt of maintenance costs or a major repair Everything disposable now days and it ultimately hurts the middle and lower class who can’t afford new cars.

I was a huge Toyota fan. Absolutely loved my 2007 Tacoma with 4WD, V6, and 6-speed manual. First clutch went 200,000 miles. Now I’ve gone to the big 3 and drive a Ram 1500. No regrets. I didn’t even consider the new Tundra due to lack of V8. Now I’m very glad I didn’t consider it.
I don’t understand why they ditched the N/A 4 cylinder option. It’s not my first choice, but I’d take that over the turbo nonsense.
The problem with Toyota is the turbo it’s always going to be an issue and that a guarantee even the ones made in Japan

Personally I don’t even care about the power train cause as a mechanic I know turbocharged engines can be fairly reliable. Seen turbocharged bmws with over 230k miles on them so the price is my major issue
How are turbo engines over the lifespan of the vehicle? Do they need more maintenance/TLC?

@@davefs9441As the owner of several turbo charged vehicles. Mostly VW. Change oil at 4k miles. Turbo cars need more warm up time before you can rev them high vs NA. Do not shut off your turbo car immediately after driving. Wait atleast 30sec to cool down before shutting it off.
( I don’t mean if you run to the grocery store or something to sit and wait in the car lol. Just when you get home and are turning the car off for the day don’t shut off immediately when parked)
Give cool down time, especially after driving hard. Avoid spiking the turbo. (Cruising and then randomly flooring it). Experience: 2015 Golf GTI with 175k miles and 2020 Audi A5 with 60k miles
I'm not a truck guy, but seeing this makes me concerned about Toyota. I hope they will address the problem as soon as possible. If I want a truck, I want a Tacoma with a V6 or a "4 Cylinder Naturally Aspirated" engine.
I currently own a 2000 Toyota 4Runner 4WD. 4Runner has 298k miles and engine/transmission run like a top. I would not think twice taking it on long road trip. The thing is built like a tank. However, my only complaint is fuel mileage and power. Getting less than 17 mpg high. I have considered the 5th gen 4Runner, but have the same gripe regarding fuel mileage at16/19. Though the Toyota V6 has been a reliable work horse, it lack of fuel efficiency and power has been it Achilles heel. Personally, I’m excited to see what the 2025 Toyota 4Runner I Force Max can offer in term of performance and fuel efficiency. And for those concerned about build quality, the 2025 4Runner will still be built in Japan.
Toyota has become just another manufacturer. They used to stand for reliability but now they are just ordinary quality at a premium price.
A little small turbo engine in a truck would actually work for my usage, but I don't want to pay a premium for a problem vehicle.
Their older naturally aspirated ones are still re sale kings
I've been leasing a 2021 Tundra for the last almost 3 years, lease is up in October and I'm starting to get calls from the dealership they want to buy out my lease and "upgrade" me to the latest 2024 Tundra. I went to see what this was about. Long story short, the equivalent to my SR5 Tundra is over 10K more than the one I lease making my payments $300 more per month. The guy was then trying to get me into a smaller vehicle to lower my monthly payments so they can have my 2021 Tundra with only 18,000 miles so they can sell as a used vehicle and possibly make more money. The guy finally admitted they're having trouble selling the new Tundras and as you mentioned in another video, they are overstocked on them because no one wants them, also getting calls from people looking for used 2021 or prior Tundras. If I end up leasing another vehicle I may just go to another dealership.
I own a 22 tundra SR5 premium and have been towing and camping with it for the last 2 years…. Zero issues so far and 25k on the engine.
I’m nervous because I keep hearing people report issues and I’ve had zero.

After 50 years of owning Toyotas, I’m finished. They have shown us who they really are. “Another one bites the dust”.
Even my built in Japan 23 4runner came with a bad front needle bearing, bad headlight and they cheaped out on the sound deadening tape with the windshield cowl. The stealership claimed the front diff rumble was normal, it got so bad I took it to another stealership and they had to replace the entire front differential. The headlight was hard for the first to ignore as it was full of water after a car wash and that cowl rattle/nails on a chalk board I had to fix myself by adding foam tape. I can't even imagine all the issues the 24/25s will come with.

I’m a Toyota 4x4 fan and I’m waiting to see what they do for the next generation Hilux so I can get one here in Central America. I hate when people say “inflation” and blame politicians for the pricing. Even with inflation these trucks are grossly overpriced. The fact that over in Asia you can get a 10k USD Toyota bare bones mini body on frame truck after reducing the price from 15-20k shows you those guy’s profit margin. They can’t get away with it in poor countries because they won’t sell. I guarantee you they are not taking a loss. I wanted to import a Tacoma so bad until I saw what you get for the price. Not built in Japan is one thing but not build in USA either? Nahhh. I see auto bloggers interviewing Toyota execs and pushing excuses in their mouths when talking to them. You can tell the execs kind of brush off and move on from the reality very fast with no comment and all smiles.

@@M85Iroc The old 1985 to 95 trucks that had those 4 cylinder turbos but weighed less than 2900 lbs. Fast forward to today and It is still a 2.4 cylinder but weighs a whopping 4,265 lbs. Just crazy how much stress will be on that motor. Just imagine it with 3 passengers and something in the bed going up a hill in the California heat.
I'm still driving my Japan built 2006 4Runner V8 Sport Edition. Nothing like a bullet proof V8 Toyota engine! My sympathy to all those that buy the new Toyota 4 Bangers.

3:05 I remember how outraged Taco guys were when the 2017 TRD Pro debuted for $42k MSRP. Now many of them desperately defend Toyota jacking up the price of a TRD Sport to $10k more than a 2017 TRD Pro.
4:05 They designed the truck to have those diagonal lines at the back of the rear quarter panels to hide bumper misalignment issues, which was a struggle during the 3rd gen. I guess they forgot about the tailgate lol
The only naturally aspirated V6 I would accept is the 4.0L. They got rid of the 1GR and everything went to hell at Toyota.
I think the hammering of "made in Mexico" is annoying I'm Mexican so maybe that's why but I think it's annoying that he keeps on saying it over and over when you buy iPhones that are made in China and india but they have quality controls in place so they can take advantage of the cheap labor but still have a quality product it speaks more on the company itself more than where the product is made and by who I've had Toyotas and they have always have felt overpriced for what they are but if that's what you like more power to you, everything is overpriced nowadays and it's unsustainable hopefully soon everything will come back to normal.
Not to beat a dead horse, but I install alarm systems, and when our main alarm panel maker went from Canada to Mexico, it has killed this industry. Nothing works right, piss poor quality, service problems even the manufacture can't figure out, and customers screaming about all the problems as my business has to eat the cost of all this to keep them happy. Glad I'm at the age I can retire. IMO, the crap we get from Mexico is a mess.
@@louclawges9069I think it still applies in the sense of quality controls not put in place properly for cost savings because like he says on the video they are saving a lot of money on labor yet the trucks got more expensive so I think Toyota like many companies that have a reputation of being good quality just don't care anymore because no matter what, people would just buy their stuff and everything is disposable because they want you to keep on buying crap
It's totally up to the company (read: their management) to determine the ultimate quality of whatever product they are selling. It has nothing to do with where the product is made. There are great companies that can make great things anywhere on earth. Poorly managed companies who don't truly care about quality make crappy things literally anywhere. (Japan is certainly no exception when it comes to this either. There have been "quality escapes" from Japanese manufacturers who manufacture products in Japan over the years as well). In my eyes, if Toyota's quality is suffering, you can exclusively blame it on Toyota and not the people or countries who assemble their vehicles.

Traded my Tacoma for a 22 frontier for all of the reasons you listed. My pro4x was cheaper than an sr5. Looks better. V6 engine. It's just an all around better truck.
