Former Tundra owner here. Those Tundra MSRP prices are approaching new 3/4 diesel 4wd territory. Towed Tundra once to its full towing capacity. traded for 4wd diesel.

Caution buying a '24 Tundra with an imminent recall on the way. They've recalled the '22 and '23. The only reason they haven't recalled the '24 is because it would result in a stop sale. They are buying time. The problem with the 22 and 23 is present in the 24. The hybrids aren't being recalled because they don't lose power steering when the engine seizes so it isn't considered a safety concern. Thats the only reason they aren't recalling hybrids. Same engine, do the math. They will eventually be recalled too. Again, buying time. They cant handle opening the floodgates for all of these at once. Its bleak.

Toyota is buying time on the Tundras to figure out policy for complete buy backs, new engines, dealer costs, all the legal stuff at corporate level that will happen. Interesting that GM has extended warranty to 100,000 miles or five years on Silverados and Sierras with their Turbomax engine.
Toyota is also claiming the problem is engine debris instead of design flaw which is ultimately what is causing the engine debris.
By calling it an engine debris, they can handle warranty claims as problems occur. However, if they diagnose the issue as a design flaw, then they’d have to buy back all the trucks from consumers that they’ve sold since 2022. Let that sink-in. It’s a design flaw folks……
@livingadreamlife1428 agree. Debris in engines made in the USA AND Japan, not likely at all. It's happening to lexus as well as toyota, so there you go. Design flaw. They'll probably start sneaking 10W40 oil in engines as they come in for inspection and keep using it until they get caught. Aside from a design change I don't know what else they can do to delay the inevitable, maybe a higher flow oil pump. I don't think the oil pressure is sufficient at 1700 rpm to handle the torque. These engines make so much torque at low rpm, and they are using 0W20 with less bearing surface than prior designs. All adds up to failure.

Nope, my brother in law just bought a 2024 tundra sr5 with the 6cy turbo and it’s been in the shop 5 times, give me the 2021 v8 5.7 it’s been around for years.
Toyota would sell much more Tundras if they included a spare motor.

Toyota will likely replace any of those motors that blow. It was recalled, and they stand behind their recalls. They repainted my 4runner 10 years after I bought it because the paint was part of a recall.

I worked in automotive advertising for a few years for one of Toyota's ad agencies and I still have a client who owns a high volume Toyota dealership. It will take a lot more than one recall that most people will forget about next week, to tarnish Toyota's reputation. If this mattered that much, the Eco Boost would have killed Ford years ago.
As a die hard Toyota for almost 4+decade, I've seen the ups and downs and it didn't phase me.

The average transaction price for all vehicles in the US was $48,510 for April 2024. $2500 over the average for a full-sized truck doesn't seem out of line. Of course the average itself is skewed quite a bit upwards, but people who think they should be able to buy a new truck for $25K are seriously deluded.

It would be reasonable to get a skewed scale from that but, they only had maybe 6-8 months of good sales in the past 5 years because of the doom spending after covid lock downs. In 2022 I paid a out 50k out the door on a red off-road. I knew at the time that I was paying too much, but I needed a vehicle.

Like all the other truck manufacturers, they can't. Federal fuel economy and emissions mandates are kicking in hard now. By 2030 you'll be looking at a triple turbo 1.0L three cylinder.
Thankful I don’t need a vehicle right now. Dealers are still not willing to deal. Test drove a new Bronco a couple weeks ago and the dealer had zero interest in trying to make a deal. They had 8 of them yet the salesman said they sell them easily which i find hard to believe these days. No incentives on price or financing. They can keep them.
As long as dealers hang on to these fantasy prices, things will only get from bad to worse for them.

Purchased a 2024 Tundra about two months ago. Had all this news broke then, I wouldn't have bought it. Hoping for the best and that Toyota gets their house in order.
Your truck will be fine. Toyota sold more vehicles in the US last year than any other auto manufacturer and didn't even make the top 10 list for "Recalls by Manufacturer". Everything will be fine

I'm curious to see how many Tundra owners keep their trucks past the manufacturers warranty period, the recall of 100,000 Tundras for bad engines does not inspire confidence for long term dependability.
Our kia optima 2.4 engine got replaced at 110k miles for free from the debris in engine problem. It's not inspiring but they did us good at the dealership. I don't think I'd be buying a new tundra unless they warranty it for 100-120k miles like Kia did. You never know when the machining debris will come loose and ruin the engine.
Some people are already panic selling to beat the warranty expiration.

I still own a 2006 4Runner V8 Sport Edition, with no problems! I was considering purchasing a Tundra as a second truck. I can't wrap my head around owning a 4 Banger turbo. Not to mention the insane pricing and manufacturing issues!

We have a '23 Tundra here in the household, not my driver and as a matter of fact I kind of avoid driving it as it is very unimpressive. No issues yet knock on wood but I have serioilus concerns about its longevity and reliability, I will be shocked if it makes to 100k miles without any major issues. I like the previous Tundra much, much better and if I needed a truck myself I would spring for a used one in the previous generation.
Overall being a long time Toyota brand loyal family I am very unimpressed with their entire lineup these last few years and if I need a vehicle in the future I will be looking elsewhere.

I recently purchased (December) a Chevy Colorado Z71, pretty loaded up, less the sunroof. Paid just over $48k. Crazy I know. But turned in my Silverado RST lease. No way I could afford a full size truck anymore!

@@JOSH-ge4oc Debt in and of itself, is not a measure of financial health. 2 year Toyota bonds are yielding 5.4% with the US Treasury bond yielding 4.7% so 70 basis points above the risk-free rate. S&P Global Ratings rates Toyota's bonds at A+, so I don't think that TM is in any trouble. Yahoo Finance has their total assets to total debt at 2.55. So I don't see why you would think that they are in financial trouble. If they really got into trouble, then their government would bail them out, similar to the United States and GM in the past.

What’s gonna put Toyota in a tough spot is the Tundra having so many engine problems. I have heard it could cost Toyota several Billion dollars to replace all the Tundra engines that are blowing up, catching fire, or just simply locking up. Get rid of that V-6 and bring back the reliability of the V-8.
All auto makers charge these prices for thier line up. I have a 23 tundra and has more power and torque than my previous gen Tundra. My neighbor bought a 6 cylinder turbo F 150 tremor, 73k. No thanks, ill keep my SR5 TRD offroad for 10 k less. Just my 2 cents.

I'm in Canada. Summer 2023 I was looking at a new Silverado and F150. Prices were insane. My wife said we should look at the Tundra. We bought an SR5 Crewmax 4x4. A bunch of extra options were also installed. We got it for $15k less than Chev or Ford.

I dumped my 2023 Tundra Platinum last Friday. It had 7,000 miles on it. I shopped for 2 weeks for the best trade value. I ended up losing $12k in just 10 months. I noped out of the Tacoma almost instantly when I saw the prices. Ended up going with a new Chevy for a lot less money.

Just replaced the transmission on my 15 Gmc slt Sierra 4x4. Only $4k. Chump change. $40k for a Toyota replacement eng out of warranty would bankrupt most people. Pure insanity. Even the replacements blow up.
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…it was the year 2019, I was looking at nicely optioned 5 year old-ish used Toyota Tundras V8 with 4WD, I could have sworn the prices were $30k +/- $5k.

It must be a regional thing because the Tacoma TRD off-road is almost nonexistent around Green Bay. At least in the color and options I want.
Going used versus new now is insane. I literally just bought my wife a 24 4Runner. We needed something that could take the kids if needed and provided off road capability too. I went with the 24 because of the fear of what the 25s are going to be. Gone is is the V6 and in comes the turbo 4 cylinder and a full redesign. We got a TRD off road premium for under 50k which I thought was pretty good considering a year or two old with 40k miles was running mid 40's. Car market prices are not sustainable, and I honestly don't know how people can afford to shell out the amount of money that some of these vehicles are costing
Here is an example of some past Toyota prices. I bought these two Toyota car and truck back in 1979 and 1984.
1) 1979 Toyota FJ-40 Land Cruiser 4WD jeep, hardtop, dark green, had the 6 cyl engine and a 4 speed, with the waterproof kit on the engine, the pinstripe option, and the A/C option. Brand new in 1979 it cost me $8.999.
2) 1984 Toyota Celica GTS Sport Coupe 2 door. It was white with blue pinstripes, and it was a really nice car. It had the high output dual cam 4 cyl engine and it was like driving a cheap Porsche. It had every option in the book, including the optional 6 speaker stereo system with the equalizer. The drivers seat had the knobs you turn to grip you in the seat, on the bottom and the sides, and the 3 air bag lumbar support, with the bulb you pump up with your hand, that had the 3 buttons on the side to remove air from each of the 3 air bags.
Brand new it cost me $13,000 in 1984.

The tundras are a huge disappointment. Ive had over 15 toyotas, 3 of which were 3rd generation that were amazing. I won't even consider a 22+ model.

My dealership is pushing 10% Apr so even an "affordable" pickup becomes a 7 to 800 dollar payment

I have a 2014 Ram 1500 Express 5.7 Hemi 4x4 Quad Cab with 96K miles that still looks good and rides like brand new. It pulls my boat and ATV trailers like they aren't even there. I see people selling trucks exactly like mine with 250-300K+ miles on Autotrader. I'd love to have a new truck with some of the new features and I can afford basically any truck I want cash purchase. However, I just hate all these overly complex smaller turbo engine trucks they are selling for stupid money. So I've found that it's sorta fun just to see how many miles I can put on the truck I have.
