TL;DR: If you believe your cause to be so worthy of joining, don't be so dismissive of people who have opposing views. Especially if they're young, the quickest way to get someone to be against you is by mocking them. Educate them. We usually live our whole lives being taught opposing views. Why would someone who lived their life being rich want to support something that negatively affects them when they've neither been educated nor treated with kindness.
I do find the 'you're born into a wealthy so you're privileged so you have no say argument' I could agree with them and they'd still get upset with me because of who I was born to.
My mom works extremely hard. She often went days, and in rare cases weeks without being home representing clients. They don't seem to understand the sacrifices some rich people have to make. This is why it saddens and discourages me when I experience people attacking and attempting to invalidate my experience because of reasons I literally cannot control.
My mom took all 5 of her kids to live in Indonesia, me included. We experienced things that made being homeless in America seem like a big upgrade. My family farm which had gotten big enough to supply most of our village's food had restrictions placed on us by the government. The farm nearly went under.
I also experienced the posh lifestyle. Being chauffeured around, having multiple homes, going out to eat and having chefs, etc. But depending on the status of the rich kid, they may also be forced to network at an early age. In my family, we are taught how to interact with clients and potential partners at *7*. Imagine having to network at 7. By 10, my Oma took me on business trips to help interact with her clients' kids. I was fluent in 3 different languages at this point. There are a lot of nuances when it comes to these things.

“Facebook has a lot of courses.”
I actually laughed at this. I’m sorry but very few employers are going to hire someone with a Facebook course as their main qualification when other candidates have degrees from prestigious colleges. People who aren’t in a good financial position mightn’t be able to go to college either because they can’t afford it or because they don’t have time due to having to work really hard to make ends meet. To say that people can make up for that with a FACEBOOK COURSE is the most OUT OF TOUCH thing I’ve heard in a while.

Online courses are too risky sometimes to spend even a little money and precious time on when it could become useless anyway. The system/society is just not built for people to work hard to succeed. Briefly worked in a shelter. Third largest in my state. They didn’t allow the guests the stay during the day, and they weren’t allowed to stay the night if they were using alcohol or any substances. The only reprimand I ever received was for letting a regular in to use the restroom.
Guests who were allowed to stay the night (it was a women’s shelter) were women with children, but they had to follow an extra set of rules. I saw a family kicked out for keeping snacks in their room. Religious services were mandatory, and if you missed you were refused shelter or resources.

Here is a simple thought exercise that helps demonstrate just how obscenely large a billion dollars is and how there is no way to ethically earn your way to a billion dollars, you can only exploit your way there, is this, using simple arithmetic.
For most people, a $5,000 a month salary would be a dream. Now, let's say that in a hypothetical scenario, you were consistently paid a salary $5,000 every day. Because it's a salary, the hours worked don't really matter as much, so a workday could be anywhere from 3-8 hours long but you still get paid $5,000 at the end of the day. And let's say that you get paid $5,000 every day for 7 days a week, 366 days in a year. After all, there's always leap years so let's factor in every year as a leap year, just to be generous. And let's just completely ignore taxes in this fantasy utopian scenario. About how many years would it take for you to then reach $1 billion?
      Answer?
      Not in your freaking lifetime.
Even if you were paid $5,000 a day for 366 days in a year, for 90 years, you still wouldn't even hit $165 million dollars.
Alright, how about the years from when Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492 up to 10 years in the future, at 2032? From 1492 to 2032, that would be 540 years. So if you were paid $5,000 every day for 366 days in a year, for 540 years, would you reach $1 billion?
      Answer?
      Nope!
You'd be a few hundred million short. So yeah, not even being paid $5,000 every day, 366 days in a year, for 540 years, will get you to crack $1 billion. And we have billionaires today who have 100-200 times that in terms of net worth. There is no ethical way to earn yourself to $1 billion, only exploit your way to there. And this is provable with simple arithmetic.

Or have their employer screw up their paperwork/taxes for years without resolution. A person like this would say "Well that's Illegal! If it's happening, how would they ever get away with it?" Completely missing the point that you have to have money to sue. Employers know how much you make. They know you can't do anything even if you wanted to and they won't be retaliated against for wage theft or wrongful termination so they jut do it. All the time. They can't fill the position anymore, and they raise wages as an incentive to fill the position? Couldn't they just retain employees by paying a live-able wage? Everyone deserves a live-able wage and you shouldn't be running a business if you won't provide that for your employees. This makes me think of the Terry Pratchett quote explaining how it’s expensive to be poor:
“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

That was the reason that union commandeered a coal train a couple years ago.

As someone who has been homeless in multiple States I can guarantee you that that is the fact for every shelter. You don't live at a shelter, you get to stay there at night and there are extremely strict rules to be able to do so for every single one of them. For every shelter you have to be there between 7:00 p.m. if you're lucky and usually 9:00 p.m. and if you aren't at the door to the shelter by that exact time then you lose the bed for the night and you have to depending on the shelter either wake up at 7:00 and be out the door by 8:00 at a lenient shelter or at the vast majority of shelters you have a 5 to 6:00 a.m. wake up and then you have to be out the door at 7:00 a.m. and you can't store anything whatsoever so when you get to the shelter it's with everything that you own and when you leave in the morning it's with everything that you own and if you don't get out of the door by the exact time that they specify you won't be able to come back that night.

If rich people paid more taxes, we could devote more money to space research. And then the research would be used for the public good instead of being held in private hands.
But taking the job creation thing more broadly, it's complete BS. They always describe companies creating jobs like it's a favor. Like it's charity they're doing out of the kindness of their heart. No! They create jobs because they need work to be done so they can make a profit. And it's especially bad with companies like Amazon because they kill jobs!
Listening to some people defend Amazon you'd think that no one ever shopped before Amazon came along. Stores existed before Amazon did. Those stores employed more people, paid them higher wages, and more of that money stayed within that particular community. Whenever Amazon kills one of those smaller stores, there's a net loss in the number of jobs, the salaries paid, and instead of staying in the community, the profits are funneled into Jeff Bezos' pocket.

I grew up very poor. I was homeless as a kid with my teenage mom at some points, living in shelters or staying at a family members house. People always say " get a job" or " you're just lazy" it's just not that simple. Try getting a job when no one wants to hire you because you don't have a phone, or a reliable mode of transportation, or your teeth are yellow because you didn't have hygiene products or even a bathroom to brush your teeth. I consider myself to still be very lucky though, because although I've never had a lot of money or materialistic items, my mother worked harder than any human being I've ever met. She put in blood sweat and tears as a young single mom of 2 with no outside help, and still does daily. If I ever hear someone say that being poor is a choice or that poor people are lazy I just get so flustered, life isn't fair to most and is never fair to the ones in the most need. But if you can learn to live without receiving then you will find inner piece. Find what makes you happy and try not to worry about the future. Love anyone who took the time to read this.❤️ Hope you have a wonderful day friends and always remember that you are loved.

i'm so glad you covered this and showed real emotion with it. because it's so tiring and painful to see people that self proclaim they have money doing everything they can to act like poor people don't deserve humanity.
my family has always been on the lower income range to straight up poor. my father left before i was born and my family was my mom, my grandma and me, a single child. my mother and grandmother ran their own window tinting and car cleaning business. they had no employees, and some years we didn't know if we'd have enough money to get by for the winter. my mother and grandma would work secondary cleaning jobs to keep us afloat. eventually, my alcoholic stepfather drained all our money and we lost the business. much of my early life was my family struggling. and what hurts so much is hearing how they talk about poor people, and i just see my mother. how she would work in 90 degree florida heat, tinting car windows, waxing cars, taking more jobs than she could really handle. knowing that if she didn't push herself, we might not have enough money for food. and she'd still smile at me, still find ways to let me feel like a kid when i was little. doing everything she could to make me happy and not realize just how bad things were. she worked hard labor her whole life, and eventually after we lost the business, she finally got a job working for call support. literally, it was the first time in 40 years she wasn't constantly hurting her back and tearing muscles.
in 2019 she passed away suddenly from a blood clot. she was fine one day and gone the next. my grandma lost her job shortly after (yes my grandma was still working in her 80's) i'm now the only person looking after my grandma. my uncle, i guess you could say is a 'rich' person. however, he doesn't live in the same state, he doesn't provide for us. hell. he hasn't even offered to help with my mom's funeral. its been 3 years and i still haven't been able to set anything up for my mom, my best friend. and currently i'm trying to get my name on the deed for the house i've lived in my entire life. a house my mom and i redid, a house i pay the bills on. because my uncle things when my grandma passes away that i'm "better off not in a house by yourself" all i can really do is plea and try to get something signed in my name. because i don't have the money to fight. and perspectives like what this video show are the type that are exactly why my uncle things i'm better off not having an actual home anymore.
right now i have a stable job, it drains me, it's not my passion, but i don't get a choice to look around for something else. i am my family's only income, if i make a bad decision it will be my fault and i'll have to live with it. i can't pursue career goals that require me to take even part time schooling because where am i going to get the time when i work 8 hours shifts 5 days out of the week. i can't tell what would be a good decision, and if something happens suddenly to my grandma, i have no one else. my uncle may be my godfather, but there is no assurance he wont use the power he has over my house to just sell it out from under me and leave me alone. he barely knows me. i have to constantly keep the worst possibilities in the back of my head. i don't get to start a business or make a risky move. my car breaking down, or my grandma taking ill could take all the money i've saved up in an instant.
when you're poor, you have to fight tooth and nail for everything you have. and even when things are starting to get better, something devastating can happen and all of what you've done is reversed in an instant. and i know how even through the worst, we kept ourselves smiling. when we'd evacuate for a hurricane, my mom would treat it like a road trip. we always kept joy in each other. and by god, you have no idea how much i wish i could have done more for her before she died. she was 54 years old and i was 24 when it it happened. she had so many plans for when things started to get better, i wish i could have been able to give her a better life. she tried everything she could to make mine better.
people out there struggling, they deserve so much better. these are people that do everything they can to make their lives and their family's lives as good as they can, and at every instant they're shoved back to the ground and belittled. by people that have never had to comfort their mother as she cries and tells you that she doesn't know what to do anymore. it hurts to see people with not an ounce of empathy cause even more hurt to people, never giving a second thought to what struggles they might actually face.

The reason I didn't go into a homeless shelter and how my family used all our money to afford a tent and hotel is because of the chances of being raped. Even if it's an all women / all men area, there's a large chance. I have a female body (sadly HELP) and my mom and stuff, and my dad would most likely never be there as he needs to work. On the flip side I *also* have ADHD that makes online school extremely difficult. We were counting on this homeschool situation/program to help us get a quality education, but we cant afford it. I have to now, take dash three classes and only get my GED. No college or uni. We have no other money makers in the house, and our government says that I am not allowed to help. We are in debt because we had to take my deadbeat (and mentally unstable and unsafe to be around) father to court. We are in debt because my ex abusive stepdad (who was once rich as fuck) put a lot of debt from *his company* onto my moms personal bank account. We can't take him to court because 1) we dont have the money to do so 2) he has threatened to ruin our lives even further 3) he has proven time and time again that he is capable and *willing* to physically harm us. My mom grew up even poorer than we are now. We live in a 720sqft house, which is pretty good considering everything. We aren't the poorest we have been, we also arent the poorest we can be, but there are times where we are told we cant buy groceries. There are times where mom doesnt get home until like 7 or 8 at night because shes working so much. I am fairly privileged, but I still wonder sometimes when the next time we'll be drained of money and have to stick to eating ramen packs. I wonder when the next grocery trip we skip out on. I wonder when the next time i can buy myself clothes that fit me. We are in debt because of a system that disadvantaged us from the start.

Using the shelters as an example of "people choose to be poor" it's ridiculous. Shelters don't allow animals nor drugs. Homeless people who have addictions are obviously NOT leaving their addiction out of the blue even if it's for a better life, that's not how it works. If it was, addiction wouldnt be such a hard topic to go around and find ways out. And second, a lot of homeless people are very lonely and only have PETS as company and usually they are their only family. And these are two things that you can find in a 5 min research, imagine how much more you can find about it in more than 5. So I repeat once more, using shelters as an example in this topic is extremely low and ridiculous.

This! Rich people, especially billionaires, aren’t just rich because they work hard. They’re rich because they exploit others and aren’t morally against doing so.

I don’t even get the argument… billionaires are just providing so much value by letting the peasants work a third of their life to provide the entire source of said billionaires income? Like, saying “I will let 1000 people work 40 hours a week to produce a product that I will then keep the majority of the profits from selling”.

33:21 “if you don’t like your job, get a better paying one”
Last July I found myself jobless after a year and some months of working my first job.
I had the resource to go stay with my parents, RENT FREE, to get back to a new job, where they pay me more and I am much happier.
So many people don’t have parents or a free place they can stay while they figure things out.
If my mom hadn’t been there, I’d probably have been working at McDonalds until I could afford to even try finding other work.
However, that being said… if you DO have the resources to not accept a shitty wage, please try finding work where you’re valued. I currently make a LOT more money than I did at my first job and all it took was me finding my place. And actually, despite COVID, MORE places have been hiring. Because less of us are willing to accept a shit wage for shit work with shit customers.
If you’re struggling and looking for something not too hard, not boring, I recommend going into the car wash industry. It is BOOMING and you can make tips plus commission depending on the company you work for!

One of my ex’s friends worked at a Amazon shipping center in our area during the 3rd shift to get as much money as possible. He told us it was the worst job he’s ever had. He said his supervisor was like a drill sergeant and The turnover rate was like 4 weeks minimum. If you took a break and were a min late coming back they would dock an entire hour so that’s why most people would just pee in bottles or wear diapers so to not even risk getting docked their time. He eventually would just leave Bc if he’s not on the clock for that hour, he’s not going to stay. I think he lasted like 3 months there. He would hang out with us after work a couple times just completely shattered.

Being a former homeless person for a few years when I was younger. I don't feel anyone who is well off should talk about what they assume it means to be homeless unless they are discussing ways to fix the issue. And yes, homeless people prefer to live on the streets free and open to do as they please than feeling like you are being regulated the government that put you in that situation in the first place. Kindness, some hot food, and helping them find feasible jobs goes a long way for the homeless. Trust me, it helped me! It has also worked well for many people I too have helped out along the way because of being in that situation before. Solving homelessness on a large scale really is more complicated. I don't understand why people assume there is an easy button to solve it. That just shows the lack of understanding and experience from many people with a lot of money.

I grew up really poor due to a divorced household, and throughout my entire childhood I was told I would need to work really hard to have a better life. I’m now a senior in college and I have the worst anxiety surrounding money. I only spend money on rent, and I have anxiety attacks and major guilt when I spend money on anything for myself (no matter how small). The worst thing about my experience is the fact that so many people have it way worse than me. So yeah, I think billionaires are kinda unnecessary and should have a cap on how much money they can acquire, and we should have some policy that helps distribute wealth (even if it just helps fund school lunches/supplies or even daycare so parents can work)

  • @elenaspeaks8817
    @elenaspeaks8817 Před 2 lety +2

I've lived my entire life paycheck to paycheck, from childhood to today living on my own, by my own resources. And even if I see a negative bank balance almost every month the week before my next paycheck, I still never considered myself truly poor. I always had a place to live, never had to live without food for more than a couple days, never found myself homeless (except for once, but that's only because the housing market really sucked when I was apartment hunting). I have pets, I have utilities, a car, and a stable job. That being said, I wish more than anything that I could afford to build a savings, so I could buy a house and not have to worry about the price tags when I go out to eat. This society isn't really set up well to help people who are struggling to ever get comfortable.
Also, studies have shown that the lower-middle and poverty-stricken social-economic classes experience more stress, anxiety, depression, work injury risks, and suicidal tendencies than middle and higher classes, simply because they are so worried about putting food on the table and keeping the lights on. Every day, ALL THE TIME. They are stuck in jobs that they hate because they pay the bills, and they don't have the money to get a suit to interview somewhere higher, or to go back to school, or to start up their own businesses.
People have told me "it's simple- invest!" First of all, I don't understand investments and could lose what little savings I have, and secondly, INVEST WITH WHAT MONEY?! No savings, remember???
This has been an essay on the plights of the lower classes, and how capitalism harms US citizens more than it helps. Read my book (I don't have a book)
