One of the best reasons why Trivium is my favorite band is because of a mix of good melodic singing and screaming that isn't too overwhelming and still clear with the heavy music.

I have hard time find metal musicians as well even though there is quite a few where I live. They're always on their own thing.

Matt and other singers have hurt their throats before. Taking care of you throat is one of the primary lessons vocal teachers teach you

He had to cut tours short a few times because he blew out his voice. Then there was that time they intentionally cut his mic during LLTTF his voice was so shot.
Long story short, there can be multiple variations of the improper technique. They do share sons common features, but in general everyone's problems are individual and have different impact on the vocal chords. Also, some people have more durable chords and it takes longer to thrash them.
There is some ways to not blow your vocals out but yeah 15 years that's along time.

@@jerryknuckles736 Yeah, but fr it would be fun to have guys to play with. All my friends from high school- don't/didn't listen to metal or rock of any kind. I got one of my friends to go to a Rammstein concert because....you know.. it's much easier to get someone into listening to that type of "metal" rather than some full blown thrash etc. or smt "too old school". It's easier for someone that doesn't listen to "guitar music", because it has keyboards and such so much, but it's a good balance for me to listen to aswell since it's still is pretty heavy.

Maybe lyrics and guttural cries will make their way but im having way too much fun just playing and putting together whatever comes to mind

I just recently got into a bit of Trivium, this guy seems like a real chill dude. That's pretty much all I wanted to say.

I learned how to scream and growl at 14 years old, I had to learn just by myself, sure ill probably never be a Rockstar, but being able to scream along at concerts and screaming while you drive is fantastic, I first used asking alexandria as a reference to start, no im screaming along to heaven shall burn and trivium. Btw your vocals are definitely a difficult technique to mimic
great video, especially for people that are learning to scream, my old singer in my old band really hurt his voice back in the early 2000s, this is a great preventative measure to direct viewers in the rite direction in to prevent damage and be on the right track on what to do from a reputable screamer, thank you for this video, i wish this type of video was around many many years ago - kevin

I started just messing around as a kid and regularly hurt my voice by doing things wrong so i totally get the story of how he had to break everything down and redo it all over again from scratch.

Man, I remember the first time I saw Trivium opened at the Venture Theatre in CA. I never really followed them. He is right. I watched a lot of videos on how to scream and technique is curial.
Matt you can sing dude. You have a amazing voice. Your screaming makes trivium first of all. I even got my mother to listen to you guys. And she also says you have a amazing voice singing or screaming. Love all the hard work you put in your music. From south africa

I remember trying to even remotely mimick what Chester Bennington did on THAT scream on Given Up in my very early teens. After that, I could taste the blood in my throat, but turns out after that I eventually eased into my current technique, which can go from deathcore lows all the way to highs

If you guys have watched him stream live on Twitch, he does an absolutely fantastic job for a non studio recording or stage environment and without even warming up most of the time. An absolute legend and it'd be great having him do music for Metal Heads one day and perhaps even some 3-2-1-GO count-downs etc just for fun :)
1:10 - Same, In Flames was the first metal band I ever heard growing up, and Anders was the first vocalist I ever heard scream or yell.
I nearly came when I got the chance to see in flames play year. Been listening to them since my cousin showed me clayman back when it came out in 2000/2001 ish. One of the best concerts I've been to, with breaking Benjamin and chevelle (when wonder whats next released) taking the cake. Chevelle is one of my absolute favorite bands, a d was really my introduction to much lower-tuned songs. The early 2000s really opened my world musically, considering most of the music I listened to previously had been either classical or classic rock (Beatles, Elvis, moody blues etc.)

How i learned to scream was just like randy from lamb of god. I started messing and screaming. Then i kept on doing it. My friends say i sound good like a cross from chris motionless and randy blythe
That's mad, I started with imitating David Draiman from disturbed. More of a rocknroll, vocal distortion like Axl Rose and Brian Johnson. After about a month I started to realise how I was doing it wrong, projecting from my throat and not my gut. Really started trying when Slipknots WANYK came out, and tried the lower tones on various Meshuggah albums. Started messing around with Suicide Silence's recent album. Can confidently say I can scream well now, after about a year of being self taught and a couple more years being taught how to sing.

man I grew up listening to the same bands he did but I didn't vibe with them then when I got into middle school I started listening to heavier new stuff like SOAD 3 Days Grace (only Riot) Rammstein, and so on but it wasn't til 8-9th grade that I got introduced to Bullet For My Valentine, and Trivium I played them on repeat, then one day my friend introduced me to As Blood Runs Black and Job For A Cowboy, he was so excited when he bust in my class room saying "dude you gota hear this, the double bass petal sounds like a freakin hum" when I heard that my heart actually fluttered, it was just like a movie and I knew I was a metal head

What’s crazy is Matt’s story’s is almost exactly like mine band wise. I actually started doing death metal vocals first, covering cannibal corpse, deicide, death and a few others. I shifted over to the more traditional metal vocals at the age of 17. Big influences were Slipknot, trivium, killswitch engage and fear factory. I wanted to be Corey and Burton so damn bad lol. But drugs got ahold of me at a young age and I quit music at 18. Still got it in me though!
Fear Factory & Slipknot aren't exactly "traditional metal" bands.

I saw these guys on accident one weekend just taking my cousin to random shows I would go to every weekend in Dallas. They were touring pull harder on the strings of your martyr , great time to be a teenager.

What a cool dude !
So I had issues with my vocals as a kid. I was self-taught and took huge influence from Trivium, however after a session in studio I blew my voice out and then I continued to practice, never warmed up, did shows and then went back to studio and blew my voice out horrendously. I only learned last year, 10 years after damaging myself, that I have perfect vocal folds and no damage present - it turns out I have another issue entirely. Now I use my voice for my work and although I want nothing more than to learn how to do metal vocals again it's a massive risk to my health and work. My point is that what Matt says here about studio vs "safe" vocals should be taken with a pinch of salt for those learning how to do vocals. Do not ever seek to blow your voice out or push yourself too far for the sake of it - don't take the risks that others do when you do not share their biology. After 10 years of issues, I can safely say that although I was very good for my age at the time, taking stupid risks and missing out on the educational aspects of modern metal vocals has been to my detriment.

Nice! I'd tried for a while, on my own and then heard a commercial on Fuse, or maybe MTV. The guy doing the commercial ( I think it was Devin Townsend ) was announcing that Ozzy would be hosting a certain music awards ceremony and went on to say, " and now, I present you ( switches to scream ) THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS ". I repeated it, immediately and it just clicked. It blew my mind at how much easier it was than I'd been thinking.

I used to have a fierce scream with a lot of range until I blew out my vocal chords (days before a show no less). Days later I got sick and had to make a trip to the hospital. Ever since I get this lump in my throat once in a while that no amount of throat clearing will dislodge. I've had a scope, meds, lessons and tried everything to get rid of it but to no avail. Even one of the American Idol coaches couldn't help. I can still scream but only for a few minutes if I'm lucky but then I start to choke a little or get like hiccups that make me feel like barfing. It sucks because screaming used to and still is one of my favorite things. It just feels so f****** good, (when it works). Oh well, Matt you are a f****** GOD!!
