So I've taken down my other two Fry Screaming tutorials and combined them into one brand new fresh lesson! In this lesson I show you two methods to get into the fry scream. I also explain what a fry scream is and isn't and what we should or shouldn't be doing with our voice when we try to make this sound.
As always, try this at your own risk. Do not continue to make any sound that causes pain, strain, hoarseness or aching. See a physician if vocal issues persist and discontinue screaming or attempting to scream.

I had to log into my account just to thank you for explaining the transition between vocal fry and a vocal scream, I tried in the past to "blend" it together without success, once you taught me it's a transition with your first method, it was very comfortable, I could hear a little tiny raspy break in my exhale, once I got the hang of what the feeling was I just pushed out more and more air from my diaphragm like I was really fed up. It's literally only been 3 hours and I can scream like my idol Mitch Lucker (R.I.P) and what's great is that my throat doesn't hurt at all!!

@@voicehacks found this going down a Pat Benatar rabbit hole. Growing up in the 80s the various metal " voices " are near & dear to me & seeing a woman doing a video on it peaked my interest. I am not a singer except for my own joy or pain. However, even I noticed an improvement in my ability....with any song. You explain in a way that feels intuitive ♡
Yes, I know Pat Benatar does not fry, nor sing metal. However she opened so many doors. She blew away the radio charts with her operatically trained voice turned rock. If any of you have never watched her sing or never heard this song check out this link.....it's a bit slow at 1st, wait for when she " lets loose " towards the end. She's still not even trying! Over 2 decades of singing that song every show (still touring this summer) & her vocal cords show no signs of objecting! I assume this is a great example of the power of warming up & proper use of your breath.
Anyway...thank you for sharing I knew l had learned something when one morning my wife called my name & repeated it as I was walking back down the hall to respond. Now I wake up grumpy...I mean foggy, grumpy, leave me alone ...I kinda yelled "What!?" .....except it came out like a demon voice đŸ˜ČđŸ€€ I had to go apologize 🙄

I tried a lot of things. This was the first video that actually taught me simple steps to hold the right vocal form. Now I can explore my voice up and down my range to find points that enhance that tone. Too many tutorials are like "make this sound", which isnt right because "that sound" is unique to your voice. You said "here's how to slowly get into the form that makes MY voice sound like this" and it totally worked. I added breath support and instead of wheezing out it was like the static disappeared for a split second then a jet engine geared up. Trying to "yell" that loud would totally hurt. I'm amazed. Thank you!

The first time I watched this video(about 6 months ago) I knew it was important, but I did not really get it. The main thing I got out of it was, you can hurt yourself. So I took it slow, worked with it, and now watching it the second time, it makes way more sense. I have definitely improved, but I have a way to go. Thank you Mary Z. You rock!

I have false cord down, my lows are great now, but fry scream has been elusive for me. I love your explanations as well as the exercises you demonstrate to replicate it, and I am definitely going to try this on the way home in the car!
I came from classical head voice training so over the years learning to belt (still working on that) has been a journey. Always wanted to learn distortions and screams.

I've seen many tutorials and I think this is the best one. I was practicing a year with the diaphragm trying to sound like Dracula about to bite (that's the idea someone said in a tutorial) and my fry scream still didn't sound that good. With this technique it sounds better. Thanks so much!

Love your channel! Although I’m not a singer or musician, I like learning about the vocalists in the music I enjoy! I enjoy listening to Infected Rain, and noticed that it sounds like Lena does two different screams/growls you speak of as well as clean vocals. I’d love to hear you talk about her different vocals in a video. A great example would be “Mold” from their album “86.” Thanks!

Try tightening or pushing your diaphragm (the muscle that contracts when you hiccup). Google the anatomy of the torso to find where this is. You can feel where it is a few ways but I describe it as creating a backwards hiccup. There's plenty of videos that explain how to use the diaphragm to project.

This was really refreshing to have a different approach to fry screaming (I’ve honestly watched every English speaking tutorial on CZcams on it). It would be super cool though if you went over a bit more of how it may sound when we’re trying to do each technique and what may happen and what it would generally (or possibly) indicate in a future video if possible :)

I've realized that it's really difficult to use these tutorials (any on CZcams) to actually get the fundamental technique down. You just really have to try out many different methods in many different ways until you stumble across the correct technique. I've been trying to get it for over 10 years (on and off), and I finally... FINALLY managed to get it down. Now I appreciate your tutorial so much more. The problem with trying to copy the sound is that you can make this sound in many different ways (by forcing it) which can put you down incorrect paths.
