How to Scream like Chester Bennington EXPLANATION & FOLLOW ALONG TUTORIAL

  • (Re-upload with a longer and better false fold activation explanation)
Chester's fry scream is a combination of a thinned out chest voice (some call this chesty mix, some call this edge, some call this belting) creaking (some call this vocal fry or vocal fold distortion) with the vocal folds, compressing the larynx (pulling the false folds into the windstream) and letting the false folds vibrate and create distortion.
Try learning this scream not from the quiet vocal fry but from learning the compression and false fold distortion first. Then sing higher and higher with it, without going much louder. Choose very open vowels like EHHH while going higher. If you keep the level of compression high and just raise in pitch gradually your voice will try to break around either G4 (if you are a baritone) or C5 (if you are a tenor). Once your voice breaks up, just stay on the scream and get it to stabilize.
If your voice does not want to break up (creak, vocal fry) try going higher with the pitch into a territory that is outside of your range. If you are an experienced singer and you have trouble with this (like i have) try singing the high note, while having false fold distortion, but go quieter on it, without letting it slip into head voice.

Oh my God it’s working I love you so much right now. My old way of doing growls was very violent and flappy. More of a gutteral type of false chord thing. I’m using this method to sing some Opeth and it’s working amazingly. I’ve been trying so hard to do this forever. I even hit some really dirty pitched stuff like in this video.
Instead of doing the HUHP then pushing as hard as I can I’m doing something different from what I always do and trying to make it sound really light and crappy and no strain and it’s working way better!
Wowowowow thanks so much. I knew the whole time I was like it just seems like I’m missing one thing and then I would have it but no one could explain it properly like you did. And you made it so easy. If I had caught your video long ago I’d probably be really good by now. Thanks man!!!!!!

Brilliant!! Your teaching is great, thanks for the video. I got that sound, going from speaking in that constipated voice to singing a note to giving it a bit more volume. That sound came out and it felt completely different from all the other times I tried it. It feels so different to normal singing, like holding a note in constipated voice is harder, but then by trying it its kind of like the false folds active themselves and I didn’t have to ‘do’ as much with my throat as I thought. I think I’d been trying to keep it feeling the same with my normal voice and that’s what held me back. I recorded myself and actually found it kind of disturbing hearing those sounds coming out of my throat hahaha it sounds like a demon! If you upload any more vids in the future, I’ll be watching them!!

Thank you so much for this!!! Once you get the practice down that you said to do how do you get to the point where you can add in that vocal fry? How do you know you’re ready, and is it dangerous if done improperly? Maybe I could just search how to do a vocal fry but would that be correct? Then just start doing this and combine the vocal fry once I’ve got this down? Or will it just come naturally as you get louder, like you said your voice will naturally become that way because it wants to as you get louder?
