How to Scream like Chester Bennington EXPLANATION & FOLLOW ALONG TUTORIAL

- (Re-upload with a longer and better false fold activation explanation)
Chester's fry scream is a combination of a thinned out chest voice (some call this chesty mix, some call this edge, some call this belting) creaking (some call this vocal fry or vocal fold distortion) with the vocal folds, compressing the larynx (pulling the false folds into the windstream) and letting the false folds vibrate and create distortion.
Try learning this scream not from the quiet vocal fry but from learning the compression and false fold distortion first. Then sing higher and higher with it, without going much louder. Choose very open vowels like EHHH while going higher. If you keep the level of compression high and just raise in pitch gradually your voice will try to break around either G4 (if you are a baritone) or C5 (if you are a tenor). Once your voice breaks up, just stay on the scream and get it to stabilize.
If your voice does not want to break up (creak, vocal fry) try going higher with the pitch into a territory that is outside of your range. If you are an experienced singer and you have trouble with this (like i have) try singing the high note, while having false fold distortion, but go quieter on it, without letting it slip into head voice. - Hudba
I wish no one were home so I could actually practice this
*Explaining eloquently like a true Jedi Master.*
he is able to teach all the younglings
completly agreed!
this is hands down the BEST tutorial I've ever seen on screaming (and trust me I've seen a lot over the past 10 years), thank you so much for explaining it so clearly
He mixes his chest voice (full singing) along with his fry, its fucking impressive and hard to pull of like he did it
Thank you Jonathan Davis 🙏 your explanation was really helpful and clear!
LOL
Hahahahaha
😆
Lmaoo
@@SINGANDSCREAM hahaha seriously though, who are you? You're a great teacher dudee
after so many videos this is the FINALLY the first time I managed to pull off a somewhat decent false chord distortion (through some trial and error)
after not being able to do anything close to it... this just feels like a huge breakthrough for me!
thank you so so much for this! The approach, the explanation, the simple steps to follow along, just everything
Hands down the best tutorial on this technique I have found, I was waiting for the "I wanna heal, I wanna feel.. " at the end.. lol
This deserves much more views. You explained it so well and also the different levels in a way that makes perfect sense to me! Thank you so much!!!
I think this is my favourite step by step video on screaming.
I've seen a lot of tutorials but this one explains it 👌🏻
THANK YOU, this is the most helpful tutorial i've seen (and i've seen SO MANY)
The only REAL tutorial in youtube that brings you to what you want...Im just so much comfortable with your lessons...and you re the only one on youtube that helped me...thank you so so much!
Dude, thank you so much. I’ve never been able to pull off any form of vocal distortion before, and with this I was literally able to do it while watching your video. Insane man, you earned a new sub! 😁
Thank you and congratulations! Make sure you observe your vocal health closely. Always do voice checks and trust in what feels good or bad.
ive never seen a better tut. thank you so much bro
Oh my God it’s working I love you so much right now. My old way of doing growls was very violent and flappy. More of a gutteral type of false chord thing. I’m using this method to sing some Opeth and it’s working amazingly. I’ve been trying so hard to do this forever. I even hit some really dirty pitched stuff like in this video.
Instead of doing the HUHP then pushing as hard as I can I’m doing something different from what I always do and trying to make it sound really light and crappy and no strain and it’s working way better!
Wowowowow thanks so much. I knew the whole time I was like it just seems like I’m missing one thing and then I would have it but no one could explain it properly like you did. And you made it so easy. If I had caught your video long ago I’d probably be really good by now. Thanks man!!!!!!
es la mejor explicación que he visto de como hacer esa distorsión sin dañar las cuerdas vocales y hacerlo bien muchas gracias!!!
literally the best tutorial for this on the web
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Huge LP fan!
Bought their first 3 albums back in the day, and now
I can finally sing this stuff thanks to you!
CHEERS😁
I'm learning this right now and this is so helpful to have a step by step guide. Fry has always eluded me but I'm determined. Thank you so much dude
There are a couple different ways to get to very similar sounding screams, people would categorise as fry. One way might help you more than others.
Ok, no words to thank you for this explanation and tips! Game changer right here!
BEST VIDEO IVE SEEN ON THIS! Thank you!
I just bingewatched through your vids, you're just what I needed - someone who's teaching the what-nots of screaming techniques with the skill to pass this knowledge, something many other content creators seem to have forfeit for hyping their videos up more. Great content, great attitude, instant sub. Keep on doing what you do!
Thank you so much. Means a lot to me! I try not to hide any part of my knowledge and give out all the infos that are important. Production value needs to go up though haha
Straight to the point, no nonsense. Thank you so much!
I've tried to learn this for many years always made I bit progress now with this explanation it work the best and I think from this point I can focus on actually learning it
my god, best explanation and step-by-step guide at the whole internet!) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!)))
He’s not even making any new content for years now but after watching about 2 hours of tutorials this is the first one I can understand and follow
Bro I just wanna say the algorithm loves your videos, I've changed many channels and accounts and you keep popping up
My right ear really enjoyed this tutorial…haha in all seriousness you’re goated for doing this and imma try to practice this often
You're amazing bro, love your work
Thanks so much!
Surprisingly effective tutorial!
Best tutorial about Chester´s technique, Thanks.
Omg man! Thank you so muuch!! This is rly working. You are amazing! I'm try to learn fry 1 year and on CIS youtube people can't teach normaly. Just only show the scream, fry, false cord. And saying "Pay for the next lessons"
They have +100500 videos but his just showing his scream and saying repeat with me... Thank you so much man! You will have a place in heaven🥲
man i made some progress watching this! Thank you dude! will keep practicing
this worked like a charm thank you.
Best tutorial so far🙌🙌
Great! An actual tutorial! I can activate my false chords with ease. I'll try to get vocal fry next.
Thank you for sharing this technique mate! It helped a lot with what I was trying to achieve.
Your scream is amazing
now you gave us gold. Thank you, greatings from Brsil
thanks for this training! it's really helpful!
Best tutorial out there!
Brilliant!! Your teaching is great, thanks for the video. I got that sound, going from speaking in that constipated voice to singing a note to giving it a bit more volume. That sound came out and it felt completely different from all the other times I tried it. It feels so different to normal singing, like holding a note in constipated voice is harder, but then by trying it its kind of like the false folds active themselves and I didn’t have to ‘do’ as much with my throat as I thought. I think I’d been trying to keep it feeling the same with my normal voice and that’s what held me back. I recorded myself and actually found it kind of disturbing hearing those sounds coming out of my throat hahaha it sounds like a demon! If you upload any more vids in the future, I’ll be watching them!!
WOW This is very effective! Thank you. I think i fixed some details that i was doing wrong.
The best teacher. Thanks you a lot.
massively excellent. period. thanx.
I'll practice that and then I'll come back here and tell you if it worked for me. I have subscribed.
I appreciate it! Let me know how it goes
Found this. Subbed and notifications on. Goes to fav. Great tutorial.
Thank you!
Bro I was figuring out how to sing like him (I'm actually a singer but reggaeton wise music) and this has helped me a lot tysm my g
Best step-by-step tutorial I've seen so far on this

best scream course ever.
Actually one of the best teachers
aww thank you!
Bro what a badass lesson
Love your videos
Love you for watching them!
Thank'you man, I'll study and try it
Super helpful.
Very informative, good video
that was really helping man ❤️
Thank you!
THANKS MAN
Would this be similar for sam carters style of vocals? Love the tutorials btw very helpfull!
Yes but Sam Carter uses a chestier mixed voice inside, not this lighter mix i use here, and not a complete vocal fry. Just a bit for the melodic parts and more break up in the shouty parts.
Thank you
What an OJ you are, thanks a lot
Haha thanks. You're welcome!
Great video👍
Great lesson bro . Thanks a lot . . .
thank you, glad you like it!
This is basically trying to speak like and old man and then scream with the same concept, that's how I got it. Thank you man u da best
This is very helpful
Ok that's a fucking damn good explanation thanks so much man
Ohh wow tutorial🔥
Great vid dude! I'm finally starting to get more that 'mixed drive' scream.
Btw, you said examples on the timeline for Cj McCreery vocals, I ques you should check Death Portrait, or Immortal, and some of his older work for example cesspool of ignorance, anyway keep it up dude!
That sounds like a False Cord scream to be! Some extreme tongue action and nasal resonance in the lows!
@@SINGANDSCREAM Yees, the airflow is the key I ques, but he has such overtone sound to his lows like they are straight from his chest voice idk.
YOU THE REAL MVP
Haha thank you!
Love voice chester
Omg u are good at teaching!
Thank you! :)
Good job!
Thanks man:)
You're welcome! Let me know if it gets you wher you wanna be
perfection! :)
Thank you 🤘🏻
Hey Dude. First of all: One of the best Tutorials i could find.
Question though: does your Voice "Break" at some Point, when you go higher ? Because i Think that this is the only Part, which holds me back from Fry screaming right.
good job
Great job! Could you make a tutorial for light scream singing? Like on the chorus of Becoming the Memory by Royal Coda? The high screaming with light distortion is so tricky!
Yeah that is singing with some false fold activation! I will make a video about raspy vocals like these.
Thank you so much for this!!! Once you get the practice down that you said to do how do you get to the point where you can add in that vocal fry? How do you know you’re ready, and is it dangerous if done improperly? Maybe I could just search how to do a vocal fry but would that be correct? Then just start doing this and combine the vocal fry once I’ve got this down? Or will it just come naturally as you get louder, like you said your voice will naturally become that way because it wants to as you get louder?
MASTER. 🙏🏻
After Seen you, I want to learn this so bad
I just figure out that this is What i ´ve been doing for years now. When my friends comes to talk about how I do it, im unable to explain because it always have been there since the start. This vidéo mighty help me to show to my Friends how it’s done
Thank you
And there you have it
Thank you
Ausgezeichnet! A few times I had to chuckle a bit cause it reminded me of every porno I’ve ever seen with the “yea yea yea” but this is actually great vocal technique and advice. Thanks buddy 🙏🏽!! Cheers to you
arigatou sensei
Liked it in the first 2 secs
This sounds pretty simular. But its so hard to get that mix/blend between scream and voice that chester did perfect
Awesome
Thanks!
dude I just found you on singandscream and i'm already getting results you are awesome dude!!! But currently i'm trying to figure out how to false chord screams and am wondering if anything in this video is useful to get that? Thanks dude have a nice day!!
I watched the How To False Fold Scream in 30 seconds and I actually learned how to scream, this dude is god xd
Hey there! Thank you so much! For the FC there is also a section in the distortion guide part 3 but you probably already found that. What I discuss in this video here is not relevant for you (yet). You can of course use compression in a FC scream too but you should only do that once you got the basic FC down.
Haha thank you but I'm just some dude that struggled with vocals for a long time and is totally nerdy about vocals
@@SINGANDSCREAM Alright thanks for the reply dude! I'll make sure to check this out and keep up your work man, you just earned a sub! Your tutorials are the only tutorials which I actually got some results from, Thanks! -Sully
I guess this is one if the top hardest thqniques
DUDE YESSSSSSSSSS
And now I need to find a secluded place to practice these :')
