Which pencil sharpener caught your eye? Let us know in the comments and give us a like to see more overengineered office supplies!
I like them all. The first one. But my overall favorite is the brass sharpener with the leather case. It is a beauty and gets the job done.
Do these work on charcoal and glass pencils too ?
I live in Germany and I own a Kum, although not The Masterpiece. Love that little thing. This video made me look at it with even greater appreciation.
I think the dial sharpener and the Meisterwork masterpiece caught my attention the most. The Meisterwork seems useful for figure drawings as often you want a lot of the graphite to be exposed.
I refuse to believe that the last sharpener wasn't added because of all the comments I keep making about woodworkers needing high quality pencils.
JOKES ON YOU I USE OVERENGINEERED MECHANICAL PENCILS
edit: woah ty for almost 5k??? :D

I use PhD Ultra.
@@ANieves3873 nice! im rocking an orenz nero atm
Fun fact: sure the sharpener might be the thing breaking your pencils, but more likely is that when you drop it, the actual lead breaks on the inside, so it might actually be you the one who is breaking pencils unintentionally
We learn in art class NOT to drop pencils specifically because of this, or at least just use mechanical pencils.
Its a shame more people don't get taught this. Of course, there is also the fact that some pencils (like the one shown in the intro) are just too low quality with really awful wood casings.
I didn't do that shit
If you ask me it's the first time i saw someone use a fancy sharpener like that. Most people in India use a thumb sized sharpener and it works just fine
@@electron1324 india is a third world country, they even dont have a toilet bowl on some area
I am an architect, and the first thing I learned in university is that regular paper cutters are the best sharpeners for all kinds of pencils (given you don't mind putting the shavings in a dustbin afterward). The blades are also easy to break into sections to have a sharper edge or simply to replace the entire blade if needed.
Ah yes, the old breaking blades
Weak. Get a real knife.
Paper cutters with easy to break sections? Ah, you mean boxcutters. They'll do the job, but you waste a lot more lead. I'm a graphic designer, 'classically schooled', from before computers were the default tool for everything. Even 30 years ago we used mechanical pencils. Not sure why you'd use wooden pencils any more, but to each their own. Romantic reasons maybe?
@@beeldbuijs I’ve always used wooden pencils. I couldn’t really get behind mechanical pencils. 🤷🏾♀️
I would assume an architect would use a mechanical pencil with the propper pencil lead size.
I dont undstand why they are not used more outside of technical fields.
Not even in my wildest dreams I would imagine there are sharpeners with adjustable tip size. I need one now.
alternate title : use pens
@@heresomewhere7600you have to use both, pencil is more for art but its still used very commonly for drawing diagrams and more

5:00 My cousin sister once gifted me this sharpener when i was in smaller grade but it had a piggy design instead of this yellow.. I'm telling ya, having this sharpener is really great for people who wants to sharp a lot of pencils, and is lazy to throw the shades away.. Also, when the pencil is sharpened the right way and not too over sharpened, it stops in its way.. The only con about this masterpiece is that it's big.. so it can't be fit inside your regular pencil boxes or pouches.. Overall an amazing product.. It still works now even after more than 7 years..
My grandpa gave it to me too but with a little girl on it sadly it doesn’t work anymore
my bestie gave me one several years ago, it's still on my desk! i use it all the time.

Your cousin sister?
@@fromthebackseat4865 Yes..? Is there anything wrong with what I've said...?
The KUM masterpiece is a must-have for graphite artists and painters. Classical technique tells us to hold the pencil like a lollipop, with the shaft under your palm, not over the crook of your thumb. We're taught to sharpen a long point by exposing an inch or more of the graphite by shaving with a razor blade, then sanding it to a taper. With the Masterpiece, you can expose as much graphite as you like with a simple twist, and no fear of a cut with a dirty razor blade.
I myself have made sharpeners like this by cutting off part of the blade, but this one from KUM looks so much more professional and probably cuts more consistently. Will buy!
I'm gonna KUM

KUM....????!!!!!!sus😂😂😂
These are the definition of overengineered and I am here for all of them!
I love the fact that you guys do outtakes!!! They’re so funny and add a human element to your videos
The 2 step sharpener is a beast. It's a staple in my drawing kit for years.
This is a whole new world of pencil sharpening that I didn't know existed, but now that I do, it makes TOTAL SENSE. I simply must remember this...
thats how i define the late night youtube life for me. just learning new things is a therapeutic experience for me.
I've had a T'Gaal for years and it's the best thing to happen to my colored pencils. Since I need a point often, the size control really lets me waste less and keep my soft core colored pencils in one piece. It's honestly amazing and a game changer.
Thanks, Jet Pens. I have an older Blackwing sharpener that looks just like the two Kums you modeled here. I missed or had forgotten that there are two spare blades included in the same "pocket" as the Kum so I learned something valuable today! Mine is black so the gray blades aren't as obvious while hiding in that pocket. It's a great sharpener too.
I too bought the Blackwing. I used it maybe 5 times and 2 blades fell out. I thought the thing was unscrewing itself. Thanks, Randy.
@@jthunder57 Kind of a nice surprise (to learn there are spare blades included), isn't it! I don't imagine I'll need the spares very soon, but ... yea!
Blackwing just licensed it from kum. If I didn’t get mine from a blackwing sample pack I would go with kum saves lots of money that way. Also prisma used to do this too a few years ago.
Mhm, I have an older version, too.
Warning you ahead of time: I have 2 plastic based KUM two-step automatic pencil sharpeners fail on me from blick (ONE FROM BLACK WING AS WELL). The issue is with the plastic mold tha holds the blades. Due to Germany's energy crisis KUM uses plastic that melts at low temperatures. Thus with medium usage, the plastic the will begin to mold with the pencils preventing the blades from shaving the wood.
Mine seems to be different. It has a metal block insert molded into the plastic, and the blades attach to that with screws. The only issue is that the plastic casing isn't all that great at containing the shavings as it's too small. Also the flex joint for the clear lid will break at some point over the years. Taping it back on works, but it's kind of meh. The two step sharpening does work great (worth the price in that regard - if not marked up), it's just the enclosure has more style than substance to it's design. Even if it's visually unique and fits the hand well, it has to be emptied after sharpening only one or two pencils which makes it impractical. The bare metal block version (also shown in the video) makes much more sense as it omits the nearly useless outer case.
Also not saying you're wrong about the design of the plastic case one. It could be they've gotten cheaper over the years and quality crapped out, as mine was purchased some years ago.
Kum
@@pauljs75 Ditto exactly this.
So it's all made of plastic? I guess that makes it so the company can have more buyer 😅😅 I mean if it long lasting like years then it won't be good for company sustainable.
I fell in love with the brass adjustable sharpener when I saw it in the art store and since it was my birthday, I bought it. I love it so much!
I have a 1950s or 60s version of the desktop sharpener. It was my grandfathers. It’s the best pencil sharpener I ever used.
you know this content is good when i say to myself "id like one of those, i might get one," then i remember that i dont use pencils
The bloopers at the end absolutely got me. So unexpected and hilarious
Two step Kum sharpener in blue. Like the side sharpeners for mechanical pencil leds plus the two reg pencil sharpeners. Awesome!
4:34 I had one of these as a kid, but shaped like a train. It's ridiculously good. Was impossible to break the lead accidentally, and it would automatically stop sharpening when it was sharp enough.
I love the T'gaal!
Hard to resist buying more!
Just got my new t’gaal sharpener and it’s amazing. Exactly as advertised. Loving all the different settings. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers.
the shapa desk sharpener is also good too because you can change the setting to sharp/blunt and it stops sharpening when it's finished and it its super easy to crank.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the price of the Ratchetta with notification!! I'm on the waiting list! Gonna snatch one of those up asap! I don't even care what color, I just neeeeeed one!
When I was a fresh young lad in my freshmen year in Architecture, sharpeners were forbidden in our drafting classes, we had to learn and master how to manually sharpen our pencils with a cutter.
seems stupid
They're not gonna like how I deal with the shavings then...
I've been using the KUM two-step sharpener for over a decade at this point. I love it.
I never knew such simple items like pencil sharpeners could be so technologically advanced.
The Tgaal is my absolute favorite because I prefer a more stubby tip and I can't think of any pencil sharpeners that offer variable tip angle.
I use the Høvel brass sharpening plane. It’s totally worth the price, small, convenient, practical, - black wing obviously think so too 😊
There’s so many cheaper options to achieve the same effect. I’m by no means a cheapskate, but it doesn’t seem worth it to me.
my fav pencil sharpner - box cutter. Works just like the plane sharpner. cheap, easily available and easy to use
The Kum two step sharpener is my favourite out of the one you showed, but I also have a few of the T'gaal multisharpeners. However my favouriite sharpener is the M + R three holed one.
I have the T’GAAL… yes, I got it because Jetpens told me to 😅 I don’t even use that many pencils but I still got it for those rare times. I love it.
3:31 the what automatic brake pencil sharpener?
LMAO😂😂😂
I dont even use pencils that much but never thought a pencil sharpener video would be this interesting
I started using a card scraper to sharpen my pencils. Works great.
I have a classic hand cranked pencil sharpener exactly as we had in public school. It’s the best, although not exactly portable. For work on the go I simply use my Pentel Sharp Kerry mechanical pencil.
I had one at one time and it was the best. They have these roller blades in them that rotated. These other ones have a single or double blade, although the desk sharpener in this video might be the roller kind. Miss my old school sharpener.
That ratcheting sharpener looks so easy to use!
Now you don't have to release your grip for that fraction of a second xD
I have the blue KUM one and love it, but also there's another long point sharpener from Blackwing that's a hexagonal design with the opening on top and that one is so good!
I wish these kind of things existed when I was a nerdy art school student 25 years ago! I really like the adjustable options on some of these
I really like the KUM two step one. I don't use much wooden pencils these days but the 2 step mechanism is great and combined with the lead pointers, it's just so convenient. I don't understand why they have to make 2 different versions though, just make the blue one with the lead pointers, no?

ngl I've been eying the Høvel for a while, I think it would be great for pencils that cant be traditionally sharpened because they are just two soft. I feel too nervous to do it with a knife lol.
Also wow I've had a Kum 2 step for years and never realized it had replacement blades.
Love the sharpener and especially the litte outtakes at the end! 😄❤ Well done!
The outtakes are hilarious 😂 this voice actor is great!
The reason your pencil lead breaks is because when you hit it, drop it, or anything similar, the lead inside fractures. So next time you go to sharpen, it just falls out.
Can someone make a double-bladed ratcheting sharpener with notification button and maybe even a dial mechanism.
Man seeing a desk sharpener again brings back nostalgia from like 2nd grade i was begging my parents to buy me one because everyone else was using it and i thought it was cool and fin
I use a 70 year old Koh-I-Noor No. 992 sharpener. It produces a nice sharp point if needed, or a rounded tip. It does both wood and 2mm lead holder mechanical pencils.
I want a sharpener that doesn’t sharpen such long points. I think that’s one of the biggest issues with pencils, especially when sharpening cheap ones.
The t’gaal is probably the one for you. On setting 1 or 2 the tip is sharp but not long. I have used 2 of them. The downside is that the part that closes over stops working properly fairly quickly ( I just keep it in a small bag). Also, I sharpen a lot of waxy coloured pencils and after about 6 months the pencil tips start breaking. It would be great if you could pull it apart and change the blade. Hope this helps.
@@flis625 ha so true my window broke so fast. I keep mine on the desk now but I used to keep it in a travel soap dish.
Changing the tip angle really changed the game for me in terms of liking to use pencils because I also like shorter tips.
now a days tho, pencils are only used for exam papers. usually if we ever need a pencil, we just use a mechanical or those lead clutch pen. it's more eco-friendly
There are lots of people who still use pencils regardless if it's eco friendly
In student's point of view, yes, but not for artist, most coloured pencils aren't mechanical.
I love my TGAAL sharpener. Life changer!!
I never knew I would end up watching a full video of pencil sharpeners!!😅 fascinating!!
i was watching a couples of pencils sharpener last night before bedtime. it’s 6am now, and watching this video 😂 and i came across some hilarious comments 🤣
I really like the voice of this man 😍 soo clear and heart touching
I've had the KUM sharpener for years and it's the best sharpener I've ever used!
Had a T'GAAL for years, love it. Best on the market IMHO.
I have 4 out of the 7 types. I love ‘em.
I have a very good desk sharpener and I really recommend them, especially for those who work with graphite pencils and need a very sharp point.
Their most basic one was mine advanced sharpener
PLUS
That leather bag for that brass sharpener was so cute🥰
I'm an aeronautical engineer student and I always just used the desk sharpener to sharp my pencils before I was doing any work and then just used a thin blade to sharpen it as it gets dull to keep that same line width along the whole schematic
I need a T'Gaal but that Racthetta is adorable!
I bought a T'GAAL specifically to sharpen little golf pencils. I have a ton of them but you need to sharpen then at a wide angle (short tip) to avoid cutting down the length.
I'm surprised that none of them used subscription system, where if you stopped paying the monthly $3 subscription, the thing just stopped working. And no Wi-fi connection for the company to track your pencil-sharpening activities which would also connect to a phone app which gives you tips on how to perform better pencil-sharpening... which for some reason asked for permission to access your contacts, files, camera, microphone, and permission to reset your phone to factory settings.
Im more of a pen guy so idk why this video held my attention for so long lol. When i use a pencil down in my shop for marking wood or whatever I use my dads old 30 year old wall mounted crank sharpener like the ones I used in grade school. Its got a rotating bezel for different pencil sizes and has 2 rotating cutters like a rotary burr or end mill used for metal work. Thing works like a champ still after all these years. I used to have one shaped like a yellow ball with a smiley face on it like the one Walmart used to have in the 90s.
I have a Kum Long Point, both M+R long point sharpeners (brass, one step, I think they're called Pollux and Castor), recently got an Afmat manual desk sharpener, and have an iPoint electric one being delivered as we speak. Nothing beats the Afmat for long points which is why I ordered the iPoint for my more regular tips. The Afmat makes them so long they're uncomfortable for writing.
I don't even use wooden pencils but anytime I see anything about over engineered stationary I MUST WATCH
I loooooove the T'Gall one! I've had it for a while and it's fantastic. ...but I feel a little stupid because I didn't realize I could actually close it until watching this video. I usually keep it on my desk but that's handy if you keep it in a pencil case!
One of my favorite channels !
Really ingenious !
Wow! I'd like to try them all 😃
The blue KUM with a sharpener for leads. Looks good.
i have the KUM sharpeners and they work great! but will definitely try the other ones
Small size knife sharpening block. The ones used for camping. Strike your pencil at desired angle, try to be consistent, like a match. Do it over a trash can. Works for every kind of pencil and your EDC knife.
I need a version of these for makeup pencils
whaa... such precisions 👍🏻
Its pretty common for woodworkers to use planes to sharpen pencils, however they generally don't move the plane relative to the pencil, but keep the plane still, which is much easier and is similar to a real planing technique for shaping really small parts. Which i think would be a better design for this pencil sharpener and perhaps how its intended to be used. Generally in woodworking you keep either the workpiece or the plane still, its really hard to plane when neither are stationary. If you were to use this sharpener i would recommend holding the pencil firm with your nondominant hand at the edge of the table at like a 30º angle and sharpen from there. This is similar to the technique that Japanese woodworkers use when sawing wood with the grain without a vise.
The Plane sharpener bares a striking resemblance to a real type of hand plane used by Luthiers (People who make Guitars and Violins). Luthiers use these small planes more as carving tools than jointery and flattening tools like most planes. Luthier planes can be held in your palm like this sharpener, while almost all other planes are held with two hands.
its really cute but i cant see myself using it over just a mini pocket knife
This video has been showing up in my recommended feed for literal weeks, so I hope you're happy that I finally clicked on it. Anyway, the best pencil sharpener I've ever used was a Panasonic Auto-Stop KP-310 electric sharpener. Those things were workhorses.
I want someone to invent a sharpener with all the best features - made of metal, ratchets, has adjustable point angles, ergonomic shape, a leather or metal case for storing the sharpener + extra blades + small screwdriver (for changing blades), and uses razor blades (so no need to keep special blades on hand just for a pencil sharpener). It would last generations!
Yes please!
Amazing video as usual. Keep up the good work. Hope that one day you guy make a video for woodworking.
I just bought a new pencil sharpener a few weeks ago and when I saw this title I thought "let me see why that was a waste of money". Lucky for me I bought the first one you showed. =)
4:35 I use a sharpener just like that, except it looks like an old-fashioned camera. It's so fun to use and sharpens perfectly every time.
I use the muji pencil sharpener, it's white and has little ears. So cute.
3:55 wait... What?!? Replacement blades? How did I never notice these! 🤦♀️ Thx JetPens.
Most desk sharpeners are a lot smaller than the one you showed.
What makes them special is their worm blade that lasts a lot longer than regular blades.
I'm pretty happy with my Swordfish helical sharpener.
i have a pencil sharpener from 1970 and unlike many if not most of these things wont break AND gets the job done
The plane sharpener was certainly interesting, but I'm wondering how much advantage it actually gives over just using a knife. When I was in college (as an art student) I almost exclusively just used my pocket knife to sharpen my pencils.
Imagine pulling the desk sharpener out of your bag in the middle of class just to sharpen a fckin pencil
I was in the market for a new pencil sharpener... jetpens got me covered
Right, now someone should use one of these for pencil sharpening speedruns
the brass one and the plane sharpener had the nicest build quality if you asked me cause the others were plastic. But they all were very nice. I liked the 2 step sharpener. To be honest I use mechanical pencils, but I still find myself drawn to this video.
Honestly I was skeptical when I bought my t’gaal 3y ago because it was plastic, but it’s the best sharpener I’ve ever had.
There is a second step with a thing called a pencil grinder to get that point extra fine. Used to be used by draftsmen.
This is beautiful and a perfect video because I am looking for a pencil sharpener
imo the desk sharpener is the best kind to have at home, office, or as a teacher for the kids to use. it almost never breaks the leads and sharpens neatly no matter how shitty the pencil wood is. it aslo tells u when the pencil has been sharpened when there is no longer any resistance when operating it.
Pencil sharpener with leather case is cool👍
I use a sharp folding pocket knife made by Michael May in Sheffield. Not sure if it's overengineered, but it is just right.
The KUM two step is my favorite sharpener ever...I can't go back to regular ones.
i've had such a difficult time sharpening an eyebrow pencil which should have a flat tip-- wonder if the blackwing can sharpen till an extended flat finish!
Kum Masterpiece is expensive, but I've been using mine for years and it's still performing perfectly.
I prefer my old school "Boston" wall mount pencil sharpener. It does the job.
That red sharpening indicator button took my breath away ✏️ ❤
These are insane!
