While I guess it's _possible_ for pencils to be overengineered, I can appreciate all the features here (even though several of them may not be things I need). But I'm *so glad* to know about the Uni Alpha Gel Switch!!! I'd liked the idea of the auto-rotating lead in a pencil, but I hadn't bought one because I thought, "There's times I LIKE having the lead stay a certain way." Being able to turn that feature on and off is amazing - I'll be getting one of those!!

I LOVE overly-engineered pencils, but I will never get a shaker. The benefit seems to be not having to move your pencil hand position to extend the lead (which honestly I kinda hate) but I usually just use my other hand to click the lead forward if I don't want to move it. Also bringing my hands together reminds me to stretch out my arms and/or hands when I've been writing awhile.

Nothing spectacular by any means, but they were cheap and worked just fine, if I lost one or wore one out, I simple grabbed another from my bag. I hated using regular wood pencils because of having to sharpen them usually after braking the lead from being in my bag being jostled around from classroom to classroom.

I found similar (and cheaper) mechanical pencil like Pilot S30 mechanical pencil if you want automatic lead advancement and not into drafting pencil, it is Faber Castell Grip Matic; and as I know, it's come only with 0,5mm lead size only. The price is very affordable for all user (under US$5) and the availability should be available everywhere (as Faber Castell is available globally). I'm from Indonesia and it's available everywhere, in a pack that come with a bonus 0,5mm lead refill & eraser.
The pencil construction is from plastic, but it's quite durable. The tip pipe had a soft spring, so a little bit push on the tip will extend the lead a little bit. Unfortunately the pipe cannot retract back so it will stay extended outside, but again, i love how the tip help the lead extending automatically.
    The cons is:
    1. it had a little bit rattling sound, and it's quite vibrate on grippy textured paper, but it's very smooth and quite nice on smooth paper.
    2. the grip is not as comfy, as it's made from hard plastic rubber. so if you a strong gripper, you should add additional grip rubber with more cushioning (I see some of those sold online).
    3. The tip pipe is help protecting the lead, but not so much. If you press down too hard or drop the pencil, the lead still had a chance breaking (usually in the between the clutch & the tip pipes), but still it is way better than Pentel Caplet (that pencil is lead breaker on my hand TwT).

I have had an S30 for over a year and a half. The wood is delicate on the top section. I also find the lead advance is not that consistent. It's an amazing device though.

These pencils are really cool…however, I would never have any use for them. I basically stopped using pencils when they stopped making us use them after 6th grade (US.) But, I can see some of the special engineering aspects of these as being great for people who use pencils as a part of their daily careers. (Actually, as a kid I could have used the one that doesn’t let you crush/break the lead as easily as I press hard when I write.)

I really enjoy using high quality wooden pencils for taking notes. I now have a variety of them; the ones I like best are Tombows. Blackwings are wonderful too but the leads in Blackwings have a tendency to break off when the pencil is put in a Kum manual sharpener. The Tombows suffer this too, but far less often. I like pencils better than pens in most cases.

I don't think it's enough. Some real mind blowing innovation through the use of micro electronics. Electric drive systems, global gps tip sensors, maybe even self writing autonomous mode. Try to get Casio G-Shock involved. I just got a pack of yellow pencils. Can you suggest a good sharpener? I like the retro look and feel of a #2.

The ottor 3 pencil has a bit of over engineering as well you flip it onto its side you see three different sizes 0.7 0.5 and also 0.3 hold the pencil vertical on that side so you can see the number then press the button for lead then there is another button to reboot the lead and choose a different one

what I find interesting here is the mogulair is listed but not the delguards? autoadvancement would be on the orenz nero, if the standard nero is too expensive the nero AT exists which is cheaper, S30 is weird since its just the "automac" in an S20 body, and I say "automac" because it lost its double knock mechanism which is the best part of the Pilot automac had they just made it on a lighter body... also the automac is never a "drafting" pencil that goes to the S15 line up or S10 if feeling stingy

The lead advancement feature sounds nice, but not for $40, so to me it's not over engineered just over priced. The rotating switch pencil IS over done though.

OK there's so much cool features I can't even decide which I like most. Is there a pen that has it all? lol of course not. However, what would you recommend as a true multi purpose pencil? I mostly use it for writing (nothing special), sketching and sometimes drawing precise stuff (mostly plans). Not sure if there is really ONE pencile that combines good writing and precise drawing while having good lead support and an ergonomic design!?
    Any recommendations?

Probably the only feature I'd _actually_ pursue is the thing dealing with sweaty hands but then again, my current *_Porsche Design_*_ Tec Flex_ Series ( Mechanical or Ballpoint ) Pens already deal with this via their woven stainless-steel mesh also providing an unmatched comfortable grip 🤔 Just not in a price sensitive way 😉
