@@alexanderbaumann7902 I was planning to write a substantive answer, but I think your answer is better.
Consider:
Furnaces are 5 stone, 2 wide, and 200 hp
Walls are 5 brick, made from 10 stone and needing to be smelted, 1 wide, and 350 hp
For 10 stone per every two blocks of your perimeter, you can double up on furnaces, having a 4-thick wall with 400 hp
Alternatively, for 10 brick for every two blocks of your perimeter, you get walls with 350 hp.
Early on, when small biters can slip thru 1-block gaps, furnaces are the superior wall.
Later, when biters are too big and need two spaces, those two walls now count for the total 700 hp, or you can use the checkerboard/tank trap layout for reduced cost, or use furnaces for the cheaper production.

@@Brigtzen Higher tier furnaces aren't worth using for this purpose, as they're more expensive than walls and need more infrastructure to build.

Walls have armour. Also furnaces have gaps. Furnaces defence is mostly like early or deathworld run defence.

Remember, if your furnace wall is not sufficient enough for late game, always upgrade to electric furnaces for better protection.
But care about exposed wires, you don't want the poor aliens to get zapped! Oh wait...

I remember watching that deathworld video. I picked up the use of furnaces from there. It saved me in my deathworld for sure until I could get walls up.
You can also put fish bait into your furnaces to start smelting aliens
wooden chests filled with mark 3 productivity modules is the most resource efficient wall. Tried it many times :)

meh, you need iron for that. Its better to use iron for diplomatic measures.

I'm more of a pipe wall player. It also looks more like an actuall wall.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to boilers, or use pipes
if youre at the point where you can mass produce boilers or pipes, you may as well use a wall. pipe and bioler is taking away valuable iron, wall is useless stone same as furnase. furnase you can automate the second you get automation, set it up and forget about it forever, just add coal every fewminutes

If this game got patched the way Rimworld does, the next update would have "biters now do 1000% damage to furnaces" regardless of how that affects legitimate use, lol.
(Afaik they don't really. It's usually fixing odd, sometimes mod related bugs. Good stuff so far)
