    I too just lost my Swiss Army Executive knife under my house while crawling through the mud to find a leaking pipe. I bought that knife in 1979 or 80 after destroying my old 14 year old executive knife trying to fix a neighbors car battery. Now I find that this knife is no longer manufactured and there is no reasonable similar model made. It’s small enough that I don’t feel like I have my 45 in my front pocket. Seems I will be heading back into that dark damp abbess under my house called a crawl space. My house is 40 feet wide and 80 feet long and I am 88 years old and I don’t crawl as well as I used to but I want my 40 plus years old Victorinox Executive knife back. Y’all stay safe.

    Thanks for highlighting the SAK Executive. I’ve carried this knife for many years and continued after I retired, 20 years ago. The last few years I also carried the Walker, which gives me additional cutting, combo tool and saw capability. I can get most tasks done when carrying both knives. Thanks again for producing this video.

    Thank you, thank you, also my favourite model. And you are the first CZcams channel (I've seen) that points out the flat head screwdriver driver on the peeler and the Phillip on the nail file. Always hate the videos where they say "if it had screwdrivers it would be great". So thank you for actually knowing what the all the tools do and sharing that. 🙏

    I found a like new Executive about 30 years ago, when I was mowing, it has been on my keychain ever since then. I haven't used it alot, but it has still come in handy many times. I didn't even know what it was called until about a month ago, when I "rediscovered" SAK's. I gave it a full cleaning a week or so ago, and I cleaned up the scales. The only thing missing on the knife, is that the SA shield is gone, nothing new scales wouldn't cure. I don't believe I have even ever sharpened it, LOL...Great little knife, now securely in a drawer, replaced by an Alox Pioneer X....Nice Review, Thank you...

    I love my 1950's water buffalo Executive but it was before the toothpick and tweezer edition and it's the exposed rivet old style. I use my fingernail clipper knife more than anything and it has the Wenger style scissors in it that I love with the serrated edges. Love my Alox 74 mm cigar punch that they discontinued almost 10 years ago that was an Ambassador with a cigar punch in it. It seems the Alox money clip is the last of the 74mm size knives.

The 74mm executive has been my edc literally for few years now and got one extra nib... Just in case 🤷🏻‍♂️ imo it's the perfect sak... Good enough to get through the day just with it and even better as a complimentary tool for main edc knife...

  • @martintanz9098
    @martintanz9098 Před 2 lety +12

    The 74 mm is the largest knife you can reasonably carry on a keychain. The advantages of it over the 58 mm knife are considerable, but the drawback is, the main blade on the Executive is still pretty small compared to an 84 mm Vic. You can use it for cutting through some tape, or maybe opening a package, but you can't even use it to cut up an apple. The main blade on my Compact or Cadet is much more useful.
    I carried one of those for awhile as my keychain knife before going back to a 58 mm. I keep an 84 mm Cadet Alox in my car, and I have a whole bunch of 91 mm models on my desk, or in the kitchen drawer.

    • @swissarmydan9354
      @swissarmydan9354  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree that the 91 mm and 84 mm better for fruits and vegetables but the 74mm can handle some bigger jobs and has a better purchase than the 58mm.
      Thanks for watching, cheers!!!

    • @Luuk_M
      @Luuk_M Před 6 měsíci

      Don't fully agree, and here's why: the “big” knive of the Executive has the big advantage that it is not that “high” as the Cadet's, which is why it works very well in cutting away the core in a quarter apple. It can make the sharp turns much better than the Cadet's blade. And the Executive's blade is much larger&sturdier and therefor more useful than that of the Classic/Manager. Same goes for the scissors. I carry the magnificent Manager on my keyring and always a slightly larger knive in the fifth pocket. Sometimes a Sportsman, sometimes an Executive. Love them both, but the Executive is the best partner to the Manager for me. Happy to have obtained one before its discontinuation, together with 2 sets of spare scales. I'm covered for the rest of my life😊

    Victorinox, like any manufacturing firm, has to do what is profitable. If the 74mm models aren't selling well, then I understand why they might be discontinued. However, they do have many fans. I can dig the 74mm it's a great key ring size but in the UK 74mm knives are expensive, I mean you can get a deluxe tinker for the same price as an executive and as there isn't much of a used market in the UK (partly because Ebay UK have banned the sale of knives), so 74mm knives don't make much sense cost wise.
    My ideal round the house knife would be an 84mm with scissors and a nail file as I love that blade size but even if it once existed, I assume it can't happen happen now because of the scissors machine issue. As a result I either carry a Tinker Small or a Compact. We always want what we can't have right.

    It's always a shame when any model is discontinued, if it were up to me they'd still make every model which had ever existed! Although I can understand that this isn't practical, Vic is really a smallish family company, it's CEO is still an Elsener. Anyway I think this means that the only 74mm model with scissors is now the Money Clip, which is really nice as it's alox and the clip can be used as a pocket clip, but it's more minimal on it's tool selection. Both are equally priced here in the UK at £36 which is equivalent to $45, but as I can get a Pioneer X for a couple of pounds less that will probably be my next addition to my rotation. I say rotation as I am not really a collector (am I? I only own 6 SAKs lol) and use them all either as EDC or outdoor / camping knives.
    If I were looking for a slender model for wearing with dress clothes I'd probably go for the Bantam alox or Exec, but I have to say it's a shame they don't make variants of these 2 models with scissors added, Bantam with scissors would be fantastic, like a compact Compact.

That's not to say that they aren't discontinued though and that once they sell existing stock of those models they won't be able to restock them. @@swissarmydan9354 Another product which I think is now discontinued which is a real shame, is the Farmer X by the looks of things. I say this as I got a notification from Heinnie Haynes here in the UK that these will not - ever - be back in stock with them; I'd requested a notification when they were back in stock a few weeks back. I am pretty sure that if they were still available HH would 100% restock as they are probably the best knife company here in the UK, and would likely have no trouble selling a new batch. The only place selling the Farmer X in the UK now is Victorinox themselves. In a way I'm relieved because if I did buy one of these, I fear that it would make my Farmer, Hiker and Climber redundant and they wouldn't get any pocket time! As it is I carry the Farmer and Hiker either together with a Classic SD for the scissors, or even a small multitool like the Leatherman Squirt, although the Vic scissors are far better than the LM. I will probably get the Pioneer X next month though. I can still get the Farmer X but at £53 as opposed to a Farmer which still costs about £23 it's hard to justify £30 just for the addition of scissors! Pioneer X is £34 so for £4 extra I get a Pioneer in a manner of speaking!

    Discontinued?!? I better grab a couple more while I can. I literally use this knife daily for everything from slicing fruit and veg to replacing a doorknob. :(

      It’s possible that I am mistaken, especially considering others comments. But, the executive is no longer showing up on the Victorinox website nor can I find it on any other US retailers website. Thank you for watching. Cheers!

    74 mm's were always the white collar knives and given white collar names and a shame the money clip is the only one left

    Some other guy said that Vx denied that claim. I sure hope he's right.

      If they just have to discontinue a range I'd rather see the 58's go and 74's brought up to date. But then the people who collect all the 58 fancy scales models would have a fit. And I'm sure it's more profitable for Vx to sale coated scales at a premium price. I think a bunch of all business bean counters took over Vx. Ugh.

    They will stop the 74 mm production?..so bad. And Victorinox isn't very innovative.

    Not sure why you care about a small knife for "around the house". A Swiss Champ would be fine. You dont need to carry it in your pocket.
