  • Cleaning lens elements In Leica Summilux 1:1.4 / 50 (some fungus NOT good).
There was much more Fungus on the lens elements than I expected, and I could only remove some of the Fungus. And there was some Fungus between 2 cemented lenses..
But I could remove most of the dust and dirt, so it looks much better than it was, at least it can now being used...
I use Hydrogen Peroxide 3%, and do the final cleaning with Lighter Fluid.
I also try with vinegar to cleaning the Fungus away, but it did not help at all.
I also try to cleaning with "Eclipse" sensor cleaning fluid, but it did not at all work against Fungus, but can be used to cleaning away the dust, BUT take REALLY GOOD CARE when use it close to the black paint on the side of the lens elements! because it will take away the black paint!
I know some Leica lenses have some problems with serious Fungus between cemented lens elements in different lens groups. Maybe other people have some good ideas, if the case is just like this lens.

Fascinating as always. How would you go if it was necessary to get to the focusing group? These are unusual as there's no countersunk screws on the bayonet ring to begin with..

i once had a problem with a lens element in an Tokina 80-200 2.8 ATX. There was a cemented Element with clouding between the elements. It wasnt fungus but rather the kit itself got cloudy. I removed the lens elements and send them to a person with the proper tooling. They took it apart and removed the old kit and kittet the lens elements again. Two Weeks later i got it back and reassembled the lens. I had to pay 50 Euros for the service. In case of the 80-200 atx maybe not really a good deal, but if you have something as expensive as the Summilux here... its a very good idea.

These old fungus marks like the once on the font and on the one back element are very sad to see. Very frustrating. This Haze effect around them is the Problem. I think they are from fungus, that attacks the coating. If you clean it yes the fungus will be away but the "haziness" will stay, maybe it will be a bit less after cleaning. But i you want to get it very very good again the Lens needs to get polished. The Glass itself is not damaged. Only the coating. So the old coating needs to be removed and a new one need to be applied. Sadly this process is not the cheapest in the world. But the small place here in Germany were i send my lens element of my Tokina ATX to, are able do the re coating. But it is a difficult topic... with a new coating the character of the lens mied change a bit. Well well... but if the Lens is very hard to get or very important to you, i think its a good thing! And if you just send the Lens elements to them, and not a full Lens, the Costs will of coarse be a lot less. So ... Safe the Lenses everyone!

It might kill it and keep it from growing but it doesn't remove it.
