A lot of Americans haven't been outside the country bc we don't get much time off work, it's very expensive to live here so money isn't spent on plane tickets to go overseas when you could visit another state.

Something to keep in mind when it comes to traveling abroad for Americans, The absolute minimum distance of airline travel from America to Europe is 7-13 hours depending on where you live. Not to mention the cost that comes with that.

Yep. People are busy trying to survive with all the high healthcare and childcare costs, and people on the other side of the world are shaming them for not traveling enough and being “self obsessed”. Not only do most Americans not have the money to travel, they don’t even get the time off like Europeans do.

The flight availability has improved but not all US airports are international airports. I had to take a flight to a larger airport to take a flight to London. I was beyond exhausted when I arrived. And my boss at the time would not give me more than two weeks off at a time. But the time spent coming and going can eat into that.

@@anndeecosita3586 You're lucky if you can get more than two weeks off. Depends where you work. As for the travel, it also depends which coast of the US and if you're going to Europe or Asia (the common destinations). What I have noticed while living in USA. Is that people canÂŽt stand silence or just hanging out and not saying anything. It makes them unconfortable. And in my country, Finland, that is very normal. And we hate small talk. And I know that sometimes it is thought as shyness or just being rude. But we just dont want to act what we are not.

I get that feeling in Estonia too. I have wanted to visit Finland while seeing family in Estonia, but didn’t have enough time. I’m okay with quiet. I love my quiet time.. my personality changes a tiny bit when I’m overly excited about traveling somewhere though haha. So I could see myself being a little annoying to family.. but still it’s easy to understand a situation where I shouldn’t force conversation.

    Great video.
"American food" stereotypes are a huge pet peeve of mine... i always tell people.... all the American food stereotypes are 100% true... and also 100% false. hamburgers and pizza as well as trash food is everywhere but if you scratch past that thin veneer of ultra-capitalism supported franchises that focus entirely on food that speaks only to the lowest common denominator you find wild variation and things many folks from across the world had no idea existed.
Some examples, prickly pear cactus (yes the cactus, bbq'ed or stewed) and fruit, Native American frybread taco's, Hawaiian, Samoan, and Chamorro food, (think folks from elsewhere, or really even Americans, appreciate the incredible influence native peoples had on American food). African culinary mashups brought together by disparate parts of the terrible slave trade being mashed together with early American food and European influences. Ridiculously wild fusion's of food that exist no where else... I had a Nepalese burrito from a local place recently that mashed up Mexican and Nepalese flavors... We steal everything and mash it up with everything else using locally available ingredients to make something very different from the original.
There is such incredible diversity in food by region, ethnic group, cultural heritage and local availability there is no such thing as "American food" it's a crazy tornado of influences with no rules and no agreement. I have been to bbq's where folks got into heated arguments or even threw a punch or two over which regional BBQ style was the best, or what qualified as cornbread, or chili. not a joke.
People talk about pizza like it is one thing... It is not one thing.
It may have come from Italy but the pizza Americans make is often unrelated to the original inspiration. no one in the US agrees what pizza even is except in the most general sense. If "pizza" is one of the most popular foods it's only because every region and person makes it what they like from the 1000 options available. This is another mantra of American food. Customization and personal preference reigns. "american food is bland!" true, but if you ask every resturant has various hot sauces, condiments and toppings often times for no additional charge.
Google American regional foods and check out that CRAZY long Wikipedia page if you are looking to be confused, amazed and horrified. it's quite a journey.
all these stereotypes are true, but also not true. Simple answers shall not be found here.

There seems to be a pleasure in America bashing that is unfortunate. America deserves the critique about a measure of self-centeredness. However, the pervasiveness of American Culture lies in part with the consumers as well as the producers. You watch American TV and then criticize us for it. While criticizing Americans for being Americans the expectation is that America's nuclear umbrella will protect from the harm of other nuclear powers, that American money will provide assistance when in danger or need, that American help will be forthcoming if there is an emergency. That part needs to be appreciated along with the criticism. There is fast food and there is food from every culture. Morning showers, deodorant use, daily toothbrushing were American habits popularized WW2 and Post WW2. I present the example of Ukraine and offer all of Europe's contribution and The U.S. contribution. America desperately needs allies, it has many world concerns. Europe needs America, it also has many world concerns. Demonstrations, disagreements, confrontations, and criminal violence occur in Europe. Restricting immigration, diluting civil liberties, fencing borders, establishing trade barriers or tariffs also occur in Europe. How many European Schools teach the history of the Western Hemisphere (any of the Western Hemisphere)? Does any European know the history of the American Revolution (or the French and Spanish involvement in it) or the War of 1812? Don't throw stones from a glass house.

European history, Asian history, and World history are more important to be taught in the US than American history being taught in Europe or Asia. What benefit will Europeans and Asians get when studying American history when everything in American history books keeps saying America is great and they're destined to be one? Totally a supremacist BS with that Manifest Destiny shit.
Most American historical events within the US like the American Civil War are not even as important to be taught internationally whereas European and Asian history has defined the world for thousands of years since civilizations began and continue to shape world history today. American history is only important among Americans but it's like a footnote in world history. Europe and Asia are centers of civilizations and it's just right that Americans like you need to study our great history because it affected your nation and the reason why your country exists today. Not the other way around.

I’m American and neither a Republican nor a Democrat. We aren’t required to register with a political party. And some politicians do run and win as independents. Although we have what is called a two party system because that’s mostly who wins but we have smaller political parties like Reform, Green. I have actually attended their conventions before as a journalist. Also there have been parties that have come and gone through history like the Federalist Party, the Whig Party. Contrary to what Emily said I don’t interpret the terms conservative and liberal as synonymous with Republican and Democratic. For one thing conservative and liberal apply to issues/topics. Like you can be a fiscal conservative and at the same time liberal on social issues. But Republicans and Democrats are the people who belong to those parties. There are people who are considered conservatives and liberals in many countries’ governments.

Few Americans iv talked to, When I ask them to compare uk political parties & USA political parties, one described republicans as almost far right & democrats as right wing compared to uk political parties. One of called Biden a weak Tory. Uk has smaller political parties but main three labour time it got in government was centre politics last time & it will be again in next election, whilst labour when not in power are usually a centre left party. Whilst Lib Dem’s are usually the centre right party & Tories known as conservatives party are right wing usually. UKIP would match republicans party in USA as the both seem as far right. Whilst democrats are more right wing than uk conservatives which would mean conservatives in uk but in USA would be classed as liberal even tho they aren’t. We also have three nationalist parties that are centre left & one that is centre right. There is no current far left political parties in uk but we do have a party that no really pays attention to unless we head there names, that party is monster raven looney party, thru do get some votes usually around 100 or less. We also have Scottish green & Green Party of England & Wales,N.I have a few parties that aren’t affiliated to any English,Welsh or Scottish people.

@@NicholasJH96 Thanks for the explanation on UK parties.
Whenever someone is giving you information you should keep in mind the messenger and whether they have an agenda. . Within the Republican and Democratic parties there are people who are considered and referred to as moderates. Examples would be Sen. Mitt Romney and the late Sen. John McCain who are called colloquially as Moderate Republicans. Both are former presidential candidates. A lot of times the parties like to run moderates because they believe the people who either aren’t affiliated with a party or aren’t die hard to their party might vote for them. Really only certain people in the parties are considered Far Right or Far Left. I thing politicians and political pundits use certain terms “trigger words” not necessarily that they are always being correctly applied. Also whether a position is considered liberal or is considered conservative isn’t set in stone. There was a time when Women’s Suffrage was considered “liberal” and not all of our states voted in favor of ratification of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. Just because a party has a platform doesn’t mean individuals support every part of it. That would be like assuming everyone who is a member of the Roman Catholic Church is against birth control and I know for a fact that’s not true. 😂

Stereotypes, like rumors are always problematic, because they ignore the individual, human nature of people, regardless of where they are born. One curse of social media is that it can just express the opinions of the people who took the time to make the videos. And as Americans, we are judged by the world for our media, which is mostly just representative of the views of the few people making or paying for that media. And when the media producer's motivations are purely profit or politically based, it represents the majority of us Americans poorly. Thanks for this video though, because it showed some American counterpoints to the popular stereotypes. As a follow up to this video, it would be great to hear from people of different countries who met Americans abroad (like in college or work), asking if their opinions of those people matched the stereotypes that they had heard about Americans prior to meeting them in person.

In my own experience, we do learn about the history of other countries but it’s CERTAIN other countries. The USA education system is very white centered but I have heard people in other former European colonies complain about the same thing. IMO a lot of non-Americans have this idea that we are all white people. The way the numbers are going we may not be a white majority in the future. I have had experiences abroad where people acted like they were skeptical I was American because I didn’t look “American”. Actually most of us who are black have roots that stretch back farther than most white people here. And seems like there is a lack of awareness that we have subcultures and one of the participants mentioned Soul Food. And furthermore not all dishes are commonly eaten in every part of the country. I have made a sweet potato pie, green bean casserole and a 7up pound cake so far this holiday season. I’m currently in the Midwest but I have Southern roots. The food here is very different. A lot is more German influenced. Not as much flavor as I’m used to. I don’t like most of it.

Turkey or ham, green beans, Mac and cheese, dirty rice, stuffing or dressing (depending on the culture), sweet potatoes/yams,

I in my POV equate non-friendly to equal rudeness. Could have been a big city thing but I was also in Rome and Madrid and got a friendlier vibe and it was easier to talk to people on the street. I ran across some British people recently when I had some friends visiting me from out of town. One was wearing an interesting t-shirt and I commented on it. Anyway it led to a discussion that must have gone on a good 20 minutes. They were really nice. We asked them if we were talking too much, and they said not at all. Perhaps this question was really meant to address (but perhaps not outright say aloud) the obvious thing most Americans don't have - a bidet or toilet spray - rather than an insult to our overall cleanliness? I suppose that's a true enough observation (although that's been changing since the pandemic and the nation's discovery of add-on bidets) if you're coming from a culture that uses water after every visit to the toilet.

I think in many American tv-shows it seems that Americans wear shoes at home perhaps because their houses/apartments are not clean enough to be barefoot or to wear just socks. I mean it's easier to keep your house or apartment clean when you take off your shoes and leave them in the hallway. You don't want to carry all the sand, snow and other dirt to your good clean carpets and floor. If you wear white socks at home, it's a good test to see how clean your apartment actually is. That's the Finnish way.

In the U.S., most of us would make NO connection between wearing shoes indoors and cleanliness. We CERTAINLY wouldn't be so rude as to take our shoes off and wear white socks around a friend's house to test their cleanliness. What the heck?? SO rude. Very few Americans take their shoes off outside of the front door because its simply not our culture. Also- who wants their shoes sitting outside in bad weather(if no porch) & where spiders or other bugs might climb in?đŸ€Ł Many of us do take shoes off inside the door though. A lot of us have rubber trays inside by the door to put our shoes in. Here it would be most common for it to be considered annoying to make guests take their shoes off at your door. As if you're telling them they're too dirty to come into your home. Or, what if they have smelly feet that day? Or one sock has a hole? LOL Why would we embarrass them by making them take their shoes off? We'd rather they do what is comfortable to them. We have door mats outside the door AND door rugs inside the door to wipe your feet before you come in and after you enter. It is considered polite to do that. If the conditions are muddy or snowy outside, you WOULD take your shoes off at the door though. Most of us would NOT walk all over someone's house with wet or muddy shoes. Also most of us would respect the cultures of other people. When I go to my Indian friends' homes, I remove my shoes outside the door. I DON'T require them to do that at my house, but they usually choose to. Also- Americans take their shoes off at home ALL the time. Just not always the second we walk in the door. We may have to leave again or go into the yard or something. For most of us, when we take our shoes off, it means we're home for a long time or for the night. Many of us have slippers we like to wear in the house, or go around the house barefoot or in socks. There's nothing better than taking your shoes off after a long day. It says- "Aaah. I'm done for the day". What you're seeing in American TV shows is Hollywood b.s. It rarely captures reality.

Actually a lot of my relatives don’t/didn’t have carpet. Also a lot of people have pets they allow to come in and out, maybe even a doggy door. About the history. Yes every country teaches their own history. But it it all set in a general world history framework and world events that explains the own history.
Nowadays in Argentina education went downhill fast, but 20 years ago when I was in highschool I learned history linked to history of the universe earth, quick evolution, hominids, first civilizations, all historical eras and ages, history of Europe, old empires, quick history of Asia and African states, then the Middle ages, the Renaissance, the discovery of America, the colonization, colonial empires, the US history itself, french revolution, Napoleonic wars, how it started the revolution in Argentina and just then our history. All of this in stages in 5 years. And even after our own history we kept having to learn about the whole history of the world and it's major events linked to our history in each decade. World Wars, 29 crack, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the USSR, dictatorships, the guerrillas en central America and Africa.
For what I see in US depictions and internet their history starts and end in the US, and nothing else. I’m American and I don’t think your perception is entirely accurate. For one thing a lot of outsiders can’t seem to grasp that we don’t have a national education system. Education curriculum are primarily determined by states. So depending on what state you live in factors into what you focus on even within learning US history. Every state I lived in required me to take a state history class which would be in part about indigenous people and their live pre Europeans. But that meant the tribes and later the European colonies discussed were different. In the USA many people identify primarily by state and that sentiment is carried in our name is literally United STATES of America. There are different facets to studying history. The courses I took weren’t called “history”. They were more specific. A lot depends on what types of history classes a school district offers and which of those are required courses.
Also when I was in Mexico at the anthropological museum I heard a lecture from an indigenous scholar who said most of the Spanish version of what happened when the conquistadors arrived is a lie crafted to make Spain look better. He said “history books are written by the victors”. My point is a lot of studying history is reading someone’s perception of what happened. I take with a grain of salt.

There is a national education board with people from all over the country specialized on each topic that makes a national curriculum. But here we also have the education in hands of the provincial states. So you have better or worse outcomes depending which one. The national curriculum is a minimum, then each province makes their own system and we have freedom of class, so teachers and professors make their classes on the topics and ways they want. They just have to give results that at minimum comply with the national education guidelines.
About the Mexican, there is a lot of victimism and revenge revisionism, specially from left leaning people. They can't talk much, Mexico was home to one of the most evilmand barbaric empires to ever roam the planet, dozens of thousands of children and men were killed in human sacrifices per year. The reason barely 100 Spanish could took a 13 million empire was because every single city under their subjugation joined, without a thought, the Spanish forming a 100,000 army lead by the Spanish. Then the Spaniards married local nobility to place themselves as rightful leaders. There is a lot of black legend regarding Spain, and viewing history with modern morals. Spain ended human sacrifices, made many wrongs indeed, but also edicted laws protecting natives, officialized them as fully citizens and not subhumans and vermin to be exterminated like other Europeans, mixed with them, gave them writing advanced agriculture leading to a population explosion, universities, roads, ports. Is not all that black as the English propaganda popularized.

For example, I happen to know when it comes to the American Civil War that depending on what state you go to school in you will likely either study extensively and perhaps have it presented to you in a way that’s sympathetic to the South or you might gloss over it. Also public schools offer the same class at different levels of difficulty ranging from extremely demanding to the teachers telling you what the test questions will be ahead of time. So there were people who went to my same high school at the same time I was there but we received different educations. I took a lot of what’s called AP classes and we even were required to do reading assignments over the summer. Stuff like Crime and Punishment and Ibsen’s The Wild Duck. But I was a middle class preppy kid whose family doesn’t present that going to college was optional. Other kids who are in poverty, dealing with bad family situations often don’t take more challenging courses nor are they often encouraged to.

This makes it appear like the people from the USA are very selfish. But we are also known for being extremely generous to people in need, not only locally, but abroad. This needs to be pointed out as well. Another thing to mention is that if you live in the Northeast, people tend to not talk with strangers and have conversations when they are out and about especially in public transportation or on the streets of big cities. In the south and in the Midwest, people tend to be a little bit more friendly. But you can find friendly people anywhere you go in the USA. There are all kinds of people in the USA. I was like “how do you think the interviewer knows the name of the state and the city you live?!”. Of course there are many Americans who answer their country but as long as I know, Americans are the only ones who have possibility to answer with their city names or state names.
They definitely think they are at the center of the universe

If Americans don't occupy the center of the universe, why are all these other countries so obsessed with Americans? I'll agree that Americans seem to be, on the surface, to be more self-righteous than those from other nations, but they are much worse at home. Europeans are more subtle about it, but they have a much greater collective superiority complex than Americans do.
As far as dirty goes, I am not sure where that stereotype comes from. It is standard practice in the US to shower daily, use deodorant, and change your clothes (or at least your shirt) daily. Show me a European nation where that is standard practice. Perhaps, that Americans don't typically remove their shoes in the house, but much of western Europe follows the same practice. All of the New World -maybe Canada is an exception- and most English speaking countries keep their shoes on inside.
And then there is loudness. Have you ever been around Italian or French tour groups? You can hear them before you see them. Americans, when alone, seem to be pretty self-conscious about their behavior when abroad. If you get a few together, the can get more boisterous, but they are nothing compared to the British and Australians. Brits in Spain and Portugal are the absolute worst.

@@utha2665 In Poland, we sometimes say "dzieƄ dobry" (good day) and "do widzenia" (goodbye) to strangers in a lift, but that's all. We don't bother strangers unless we really have serious questions. If we have a question, we usually start a discussion by apologizing for disturbing someone using formal language "przepraszam Pana/Panią, ...?" (Excuse me Sir/Madame, ...?), and then we ask the question. There is no something like small talk in Polish culture. The default behavior is not to bother other people.
That's why questions like "how are you?" sound suspicious and strange to us. If you ask such a question to a Polish person you should expect a truly serious answer because we usually don't talk about private life with strangers. It's sus.
Also, asking such questions and not expecting an answer seems like forced politeness. It sounds fake.

I find the countries that find small talk rude to be mainly limited to Europe. Outside of Europe (SE Asia, Africa, Latin America), small talk is common in many countries there.
Ironically...When I visit family in Latin America, it's the Europeans that seem overjoyed to have friendly people approach them and they act like they never want to leave lol. Same when I visited SE Asia and E Asia. Yet many people I've met claim to hate small talk but really love the community benefits that it brings (warm people, friendly neighbors, helping hands, etc.). I think that by experiencing another culture, it's easier to understand why they do certain things. And for many, small talk isn't selfish, it's shoeing care and connection.

The last one is VERY true!
One of the most annoying examples is how they think their accent (if they don't have a broad east coast/southern, etc one) is the default English accent of the world, so claim they don't have one and it's just everyone else other than them that has one. EVERYONE has an accent, you're no different. They seem to conflate the mere word "accent" with "different/broad/foreign accent" but no, that's not necessarily the case. No matter how mild you perceive your own as, you still have one because there's no such thing as being accentless.
