- First of all, can we just take a moment to appreciate the incredible energy and infectious rhythm of this song? From the moment that intro starts, you can't help but start moving my feet and bobbing your head! And then that iconic opening line "Poor old Johnny Ray..." just draws you right in and sets the stage for an unforgettable musical journey.
But the way this song builds and builds, layering in different instruments and vocals until you feel like you're right in the middle of this massive party! And when the chorus hits...wow. It's like every single person in the room just can't resist shouting out "Come on Eileen!" at the top of their lungs. It's just such a joyous, celebratory moment that never fails to put a smile on my face.
They're a English pop rock band from Birmingham with Irish roots. Kevin Rowland (lead singer) had an eye for fashion with a disdain for everything fashionable.
Irish influences, not roots
These guys were quite successful in the UK for a number of years. In the States, this was their only hit, but damn, they hit it out of the park! Btw, "Dexy" is short for Dexedrine - a popular amphetamine during the Norther Soul movement that gave users the energy to dance all night. PS I love your analysis in the video description.
Every British wedding this comes on and the room erupts.
I've just seen them live and Kevin still sounds the same now at 70.
In 1995 in my local pub in London, uk, (I was 20) This song made the whole pub stomp their feet and singing like mad. Even at my third youngest cousins wedding a month ago ( he's born 1994) , he and all his friends was stomping the floor to this (I reuqested the song on the playlist btw😉).
Still one of my favorite feel good songs, forever a bop, it aged like fine wine 😊
I remember when this went to number one in England summer of 82. English disco nightclub. Played it at midnight.
Just discovered you guys..love reactions because they bring back memories. 64 years young and I love all music. Thanks.
Johnny Ray who is mentioned at the beginning was a real singer and loved by people of my mom’s generation, class of ‘51.
He had a very unique sound, and a great singing voice too.
One of my all time favourite songs. Was when it came out, is now
Always loved this one hit wonder
Dexys had loads of hits in uk and Ireland
@jackthelad5366 yes Geno went to no 1 aswell
In the UK Dexy's had two #1 singles, four top ten singles, and nine top 40 singles. They also had four top ten albums. They're the real deal
Another great song and reaction!
A fire solo hit is "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes in 1993. It's a great video as well!
Great song!!
Really enjoyed your reactions to this great song.
First, love you guys. This is definitely one of my favorites, it’s still being played at weddings and parties, great to dance to. They had more hits in Europe like “Geno” and “Jacky Wilson said”. Every song on their albums is a gem.
Im kinda glad the bib overall with a belt thing never cought on! 😂
Great catchy song though.
One hit wonders is a great idea! What about na- na- na 19? 😂 "Paul Hardcastle - 19 Nineteen" 🚁That is a 💣 one hit wonder from the 80s that I don't ever recall seeing a reaction done to it.
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve requested “19” by Paul Hardcastle, the long version, with many reactors; no one has done it yet, and it’s a shame. Such a powerful message and a true club hit as well. I used to feel a bit “bad” dancing to it because it’s so tragic, but it is impossible not to. I’m glad there’s someone else out there in the reaction fan community that recognizes the genius of that song. Dad was a Vietnam Vet but he was smart; he was 18, knew he was likely going to get drafted, so instead he joined the Air Force. Ended up being an air traffic controller in Thailand.
This was great. Made my day
When I used to DJ 80's night this song always packed the dancefloor!
I always had a crush on the banjo player. This mixes Irish and English music.
That's Billy Adams real name Kevin Adams
"Black Betty" by Ram Jam is a fire one hit wonder.
Yesssss I Approve this message!!!! Lolol My Jam!!!! 👍🏿
OMG they would flip over that one.
Huge hit in the verry early 1980s well done I love thease guys reaction videos keep up good music guys will from the uk 😊
A classic 80s theme.. another band known for one song is T'Pau's with "Heart & Soul". Hope you check it out soon.
"Turning Japanese" - The Vapors. Great one hit Wonder!
Good track but they had better. Trains is a banger...
I love you Corey Roy love your dancing. Great song
One Hit Wonder - New Radicals "YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE".
A hidden gem.
You guys are reacting to the foundations of my whole life and being over and over again in the last couple of months. Insanity!
I'm so happy and thank you :D
should remind of being in caprine greens in chicago
Dearly beloved... I present to you "Let's Go Crazy" by the royal highness Prince. Hit #1 in '84.
At 12 I was bumping this y’all I still have my 45
giggling at the visuals and moving to the beat , I dont blame you, I would, listen to the lyrics and think again ...
I tots love this song❤
My Sharona by The Knack.
There was a band in the 80's from England called "Madness" in a way like Dexi's but more polished, check out their song "It Must Be Love" very cool.
He dances like the police just cuffed him lol
You guys are doing great.
Subbed up, love the format!
The reference to Johnny Ray he did a song called the little Cloud that cried that's what the beginning verses about
This is the British National Anthem
Noooooo!!!!! Never liked this song then or now 😂😂😂 and I listen to many many genres and eras, but can’t with this one. Don’t blame you for reacting to though; it was a hit and I’m sure people requested it 😂
Memories of my High School Years!
Dexys [slang] were drugs that kept u up all night to dance in the northern soul clubs in uk
Went to a club and the Dj said to do the Twist, then he said to Limbo and later on he said Come on Eileen. I needed bail money for that one.
It's actually called "Come on, Eileen" the comma is VERY important or it's a very different kind of song.
Eileen is a real person, she was his first " girlfriend " ,the photos at the start of the vid are really them
No Eileen is a composite character. Kevin Rowland has explained in interviews.
Nice one 👍 Try Radar love by Golden Earring. It's a winner
Brook Rd and Hayles St London
Sub-titles for the younger fella please.
And they had more than one hit by the way.
The 80's were the best
My thoughts I confess....
If ever a girl looked Irish, it’s Eileen in this song.
She is Irish. Máire Fahey. Her sister is Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama and Shakespeare’s Sister.
Suspenders in fashion back then?
Fun fact too ra loo Ra is Irish it means good bye I'll be seeing you
1 hit wonder Kajagoogoo’s song “Too Shy”
RIP to the lead singer 😢
He’s alive.
By the way they are from Birmingham England- can I suggest you watch the closing concert of theCommon Wealth games 2022 to know Birmingham bandsthat sound like they come from different parts of the world but were born in that city.
Mickey, by Toni Basil.
They had a hit with a song called Geno, which was just as good, maybe better.
Safety dance, one hit wonder
In the same month you reviewed Dexys Midnight Runners and UB40- groups from Birmingham England 80s, what's next Duran Duran, Black Sabath?
please play wyonnas big brown beaver
A good 1 hit wonder is Drivers Seat by Sniff ‘N The Tears.
MTV jam!
More than one runner lol
Back in the day ..hated this song..lol
me too. And i pity anyone who was named Eileen. Kids can play with words in the worst way.
Fenom202 has heard everything. You should work on stumping him.
Great song and they were not a one hit wonder! DMR were a successful British band who had a lot of good singles.
They from Scotland
Not a one hit wonder, Gino.. Jack Willson said.. among others
They ain't no one hit wonder!
Dexy's were NOT one hit wonders. I know you folks over the pond aren't up to date with the better music scene in the UK 😂
They're an English band, not Irish.
I absolutely detest this song and have since the 80's. 😂🤷🏼♀️ I always turn the radio when this somes on.
This group is the Chicago of the UK. Not a one hit wonder at all.
Probably their worst song. Not indicative of their true original path. Get into Searching for the Young Soul Rebels. One of The best albums ever. Listen to There There My Dear.
So not a one hit wonder
