  • I review EA Sports WRC and let you know if it's worth getting and what's good and what's bad about this title. If you are fed up with the flood of anodyne, non-critical tripe surrounding this game, then you will probably enjoy this video that I tailor-made for intellectually high-class tea drinkers and people able to look at video games in a somewhat critical manor.

Aside from the performance and stuttering, the biggest problem for me is there is just too much tyre grip. In hairpins and tight turns the gravel feels like slightly slippy tarmac. You can break the rear end grip but it very aggressively regains grip again, there isn’t enough progression in the loss and re-acquisition of grip.

    • @socks2441
      @socks2441 Před 7 měsíci +15

exactly. ironically its the equal but opposite problem dirt rally 2.0 had. i feel like the physics for that were designed for gravel then adapted for tarmac, and for this game they were designed for tarmac then adapted for gravel.
since the most exciting and differentiating thing about rally is sliding around on gravel, i will take the former over the latter anyday.

To add to that, the handbrake behavior is very strange. No pendulum effect, just like DR2 but even worst cuz of high grip levels.

Hmmm... maybe learn to drive then??? Or maybe learn to tune a rally car to be aggressive and to oversteer and powerslide it??? You know... maybe in a realistic rally game you should drive realistically like a rally car should be driven???
Just saying... cause unlike every dumbass in this comment sections I do know how to drive a rally car and I do powerslide my car any time I want and it doesn't regain grip until I want it to... hmmm... maybe I'm special??? Oh wait... I know how to tune and fucking DRIVE the car to do all those things...
do the words THROTTLE MANAGEMENT and WHEEL MANAGEMENT in a hairpin turn mean ANYTHING to you???
people complain about everything and don't bother to think if they're doing things right or not... stupidity knows no boundaries in 2023...

@@socks2441 It's literally the same gravel physics as DR2, maybe with some slight tweaks to reduce grip in some scenarios. Go set Traxion's recommended FFB settings, and then tweak from there. The FFB is having a disproportionate impact on people's impression of the physics in WRC

Thank you. After 4 hours on a really high end system, I wondered why do many reviews portray a different (I.e. glowing) experience. Sound aside, and ignoring issues like stuttering that will get fixed, the design is dismal. I second all your observations. I would add that they picked “dusty tan” as the color of all road surfaces - tarmac or dirt or gravel, new or old road. In addition the environment feels like a 3D computer graphics model mated with a water color painting from the 1800’s. We have the haze that prevails everywhere and under almost all weather conditions and time of day. It took a while for the kinks to get worked out of WRCG, but other than for multi-player and sound, WRCG is far more immersive, fun, exciting, and detailed.

    • @TomssP642
      @TomssP642 Před 7 měsíci +3

Spot on on the colours. So many different vibrant locations around nearly all continents and in minds of CodEmAsters they all have the same water paint dulled colours, exactly... Jeez it's depressing to find out Chile, Kenya, Greece and Indonesia all have the same ground and vegetation colours 😂

Yes, even just looking at videos, the tracks have a very different feel and look to them then the ones from Kylotonn. The tracks from Kyloton felt real, diverse, alive and just more pleasing. With this game, you can easily see the repitition of the assets. And with rally games, it's all about the tracks and their environments.

Yep. Once the kinks got worked out of generations, it is fantastic, and scales equally well to full rigs (motion, gforces, wind, dashes, triples, 4K). I wondered whether EA Rally meant I would have two rally games to play. Not at this point!

    • @obomasinladen
      @obomasinladen Před 7 měsíci

.. the kinks never got worked out of generations though?? I raised hell on twitter and reddit like many others regarding:
      1. throttle bug (unresponsive and 0 throttle below 30-40% pedal/trigger actuation)
      2. clutch does not actuate unless held for 1-2 seconds on controller
      3. rain braking is BAD. rain stages look downright TERRIBLE (no transparency in rain, appears shiny/white)
      4. boost bug, nuff said
      5. disgraceful sound design ( engines/gravel effects)
      6. Button mapping/audio settings reset (controller/wheel presets reset constantly too) ps5
Many Many people have complained about these issues and you know what they did? They pulled the plug on supporting the game after like a year of bullshit updates. The gameplay was fun, but all the bugs I ran into genuinely ruined my experience. I particularly enjoy time trial leaderboards which were unreliable at best given the bugs mentioned above. Lost allllll my hope in the devs of generations. wrc 23 is muchhhhhh better so far. @@netlawman2001

I totally agree… the stages in WRC Generations are just so much more fun and not monotonous. The handling model in WRC Generations might not be what some people would say is “realistic”, but you really felt like you were making the car dance around the bends… and the single player career mode was good and engaging too.
I also feel like we’ve lost out… it would’ve been better to keep Kyloton on the WRC licence, and then had Dirt Rally 3.0 (this game) as an alternative…

The surface of the stages are worse than DR 2.0 but better than WRC Generations, it should be like real surfaces according to John Amstrong. And I am also missing the random events, I wanna see DNF cars and all other stuff from DR 2.0. I'm having fun, but at the moment it needs a lot or patches. Take Finland, it feels like someone has gone round the tracks with a steam roller and flattend them all out where as in Dirt Rally 2.0 the surface is trying to kill you with all the lumps and bumps. You are, of course, right about everything GM. The one great thing about the game is it's £40. That papers over a lot of cracks for me. BUT ...
Things that annoy me - many sections of landscapes look like they're from a 15 year old game - a hillside with trees looking like they're a placeholder rough cut and paste first attempt they forgot to go back and finish. The over exposure of the roads as seen from inside the car is staggeringly bad. Why is there no option where you could drive any stage at different times of the day instead of the time trial midday fixed option when the stark lighting shows up the shoddy graphics in places?
I don't get a real sense of place from any of the tracks, there are not enough random visual elements on stages as there would be in real life - it all seems be to a formula, like the stages were procedurally generated by a non creative AI.
I do enjoy the game somewhat, but all the time I'm thinking about the sub-par handling, the "unfinished" graphics in some stages and the poor optimisation.
Please Codemasters can you finish the game soon and patch the hell out of it, you could so easily have had the best rally game ever on your hands, you still can with a little polish, care and professionalism.

This is the first review which doesn't seem to be sponsored by EA.
Despite being an RBR modder (creating stages), I understand arcade / simcade games have their place on the market, so I am not going to hate it for how simplified it is in many ways. But as one who have some idea about what's possible with the current hw & sw, I find ridiculous how such big companies with all that budget and years of development can produce such indie-like game, with basic flaws like non movable traffic signs...
The release was either super rushed, or they simply didn't care because they knew people will buy it anyway thanks to that ridiculous amount of sponsored reviews and the fact it's gonna be the only modern rally game for some time.

Colour grading was all off especially. NZ is one of the poorer locations in EA WRC, passable... but feels rushed.
You're having a laugh otherwise though, the EA WRC stages are 100x better than Dirt Rally boring flat stages. We had so few locations at launch, then just got remasters. Mexico, Portugal, Chile, Indonesia, Kenya, Italy, Corsica... all great. Snow locations are great. There are a few underwhelming ones like NZ, Estonia, Croatia. The performance problems are really a turn off for me, especially when playing a driving game... If it was a single player RPG with a ton of cutscenes then maybe that's ok? But a driving game that really focuses on visual speed and precision should have performance at the top of the requirements. I would say even more so than with an FPS because at least you get to shoot more than once... lol

I think a lot of the performance problems with EA Sports WRC are down to the dev team moving to Unreal engine and not fully understanding how to get the best performance out of it. I can't help but feel that they would have made a better looking game with a more stable frame rate if they'd stuck to using the Ego engine.

I've been off road racing for over a decade now. I started when I was 12. We don't do rally but it's very similar in a lot of ways. We race around closed off roads through the forests and some street circuits. My current weapon of choice is a Subaru BRZ rwd but I think calling it a Subaru at this point is a stretch lmao. Before then I raced an awd dodge challenger that I unfortunately wrapped around a tree mid race.
I only bring all that up because I feel like folks in the racing community like to know your experience before giving your opinions.
With that being said the first thing I noticed about this game is how authentic the handling feels. It feels like the tires actually bite into the gravel and I'm not sliding around on ice. In real life you have significantly more grip than you think and sliding through corners is an advanced technique that takes years of practice. That snapping forward thing you're talking about is a real life thing. Cars aren't meant to slide. The aero dynamics of the car want to make it go straight. If you counter steer too hard in a slide you'll snap forward. Especially in gravel and pavement. The opposite of that is if you over steer you'll loose the rear end. You need to find the sweet spot to hold the slide and counter steer when you want to straighten out. The reason this feels weird to you is because dr1 and 2 feel like the tires do absolutely nothing and slide over the gravel like it's ice. In this game I use genuine racing techniques. In dirt rally I can just throw the car around like it means nothing.
Also the handbrake in this game feels very realistic. Whenever you full on lock your wheels your car instantly becomes un predictable. You should avoid using it at all times. Relying on it is a sign of an amateur driver. Hand brake turning is also slowing 9 times outta 10 than flowing through the corner. Drifting is for showing off, sliding is for racing.
Other than the performance of the game being shit at launch, I'd say everything else you bring up is matter of opinion. But thats just the nature of a game review.
If you wanna play a fun video game then go for dirt rally games. If you want to play an authentic off road game then play this....or beam ng 😁

    In short... I concur.
It's the first time I've pre-ordered a game, as I felt it was reasonably priced for an upgraded & modernisised Dirt Rally 2.0, with official WRC content, but wow, this EA WRC game is a major disappointmen!
The extremely poor performance & graphics are shocking in 2023. I can't see how the poor UX with navigation & input bugs got passed devs or even soulless marketeers. It's clearly been designed by committee, and not for even mildly interested rally/motorsports fans.
I can see this title being slashed to €20 in early 2024... and it maybe will be worth it then.
I never rated the "opinions" of content-creators too highly before, but the pre-release content from other mainstream youtubers for this game is another nail in the coffin for impartial commentary and credibility. I'm talking here about people I can tell were once real motorsports fans... not just the insta-ghouls or twitch-twats!

My biggest gripe is that the stages are just boring. Like, every once in a while you'll go through a small town or something, and it's like cool, but then you go back to the barren wastelands that is Codemaster stage design. The attention to detail just isn't there. There is no character to these stages and the immersion factor is low. The level of detail at @20:37 for that section of the Japan stage is how the whole game should have been. So just like the AI, the quality consistency is all over the place. I honestly had the feeling this would be state of the game pre launch when I saw the price tag. Not even a full price game tells me they didn't even have much hope in it or that theyre gonna rely on microtransactions in the future.

@@rowlandjohnvanderwesthuize2164 yeah you're exactly right... I knew something was up when each of those BS "preview" videos started with "sponsored by EA" screen that not one of those youtubers suspiciously mentioned. Some even went as far as to say the are absolutely not paid, yeah right. One party gets early access code and tons of views and publicity, other party gets heaps of hype and skewed "previews" into positive, if at all, barely mentioning ANY negatives, like glaring stuttering, and people believe no money is being moved? . I have been so puzzled by so conflicting reactions all over social media that I watched hours upon hours of gameplay and "reviews" and yeah it's dull. Dirt rally didn't have much to offer in terms of single player, nor did KT WRC, but both, while very different, managed one thing most of times at least: physics, not perfect, visuals neither, nor physics - but driving and mastering it was ultimately fun and rewarding. Here it looks so way off. Like was said here, all cars look to be driving like modern rally1...
Also codemasters getting rid of dailies, weeklies and monthlies and just leaving it all to players to create and join Clubs to create their own experience OUTSIDE of the game is so lazy I cant actually believe it.
And again, as was said here in the review, ALL gravel roads look nearly identical, what the hell is up with that... Let alone its pristine look, the gravel road from country to country does not even have a different colour. Same with sky, with foilage, with distant views, from Kenya, through Sardinia, Greece, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Chile, just everything is the same colour. Stages are lifeless. There are quite a few runs through or near towns and villages, there should be big crowds, especially since we're talking about a supposedly officially licensed WRC product - they're so out of touch with the actual modern world that they dont even care about presenting their product as popular with fans on virtual stages... From codemasters being their usual (some things great, some things questionable at least), here comes ea and fia wrc to push the game into new engine and rush it to release. I'm so glad I've grown up into being financially reponsible in gaming spending and not thown my money into this.

i totaly agree with your review. i have some other things that should have been noted up. that is bad.
    - inconistent co driver in reading phase notes, even on the earliest is not enough.
    - Phase notes are maybe about 20% or more missing. the importance of the notes when it matter the most, maybe half or more is missing. or wrong. on a 3 left in monaco, co driver says "slight left" in a high speed, where the turn is a 3. maybe even tightens.
there have also been some miss information where it can be confucing. like Left over Jump" but does not mention whats comes fast right after the jump. that happened in sweden, keep left and keep right or even keep middle, is missing alot when it matters the most.
another note for example, i dondt remember stage or country, but there were almost same as sweden over the jump, but this was a "right over crest" so i tested to stay right over crest, but about 5 meters or less after crest, there was 1 right. and that was said after passing the crest.
so thrust issues to the co driver is 0% in my end.
    - sometimes, the co-driver is hardly heard, and have to tune that sound at max, and tune down everything else of sound. to be able to catch a few notes, and due to its inconsistent reading then co driver starts "mumbling" where notes hardly with clear voice being heard. dondt know much about it.
other than that you covered up alot what i totaly agree with you.

As someone who didn't have a wheel in the DR2 days and didn't like it at all on controller, I did the 5 hour trial for this on my wheel and it's nice to see a few gripes I had too, so it's not just me.
I agree on the stage surfaces looking weirdly fresh/uniform throughout the stage, but overall I felt the stage design in terms of character through elevation/camber/bumps was a big step above DR2, where all the stages felt boring to me. Not as good as Kylotonn stages though.
I had the weird snappy oversteer thing too while driving slow RWD things like the Hillman Avenger and found it weird, but I never really experienced the thing where it wants to pull itself back much. For me it was always like half or 2/3rds of the way through a corner, with a very steady slide that only needed minor countersteer and then just suddenly was sideways, always felt kinda the same but rarely happened in the same corner. It almost felt like I had hooked a rut that I couldn't see or something. Maybe I'm just bad though, I dunno.

What you just described happens all the time to the junior racers in my league (not rally but off roading) it sounds like your front diff opened up causing you to suddenly lose power to the front of the car, or you started to over steer, or you got on the gas too hard. keep practicing and learn to slide without the hand brake!

except doing it in real life is significantly harder than in the dirt rally games. This game handles a lot more like a real car does and takes real techniques to slide thru corners. In dr 1 and 2 you can drive like the car is a toy and you're going over plastic

Great review. I ended up buying Dirt Rally 2.0 instead of WRC, because in the 5 hour trial i couldn't zoom into the game and felt it was a simple arcade game and not a drivingexperience. I played DR2 a lot on Xbox before i got a pc and now with full content and the better graphics etc. it just came to life again. DR2 is still the king for me.

I just didn’t feel connected through the FFB, didn’t feel the weight of the car. I’m full time into iRacing where the FFB is criticized a lot, but that feels so much better. Saving the car from over- or understeer in that game goes intuitively and feel right. It’s probably what are conditioned by, but playing this game will harm the my feeling for IRacing. Hopefully next iteration they will focus more on car handeling and FFB. I refunded after playing an hout of it, who knows after some updates it gets better, but until then any hour in this game is time I’m not improving in IRacing.

You need to fix the FFB... lower the self align to 80, wheel friction to 40-45, Tyre Friction to 15, up the Suspension to 120-125 and lower colision to 80 or something...
If you keep the basic FFB it's gonna suck like it sucks in every racing game... anyway, do this and you'll feel how a real rally car should feel...

  • @SimsRacingDesign

I did notice that all the footage shown in the video is from driving in time trial mode or playing another mode with very light surface degradation. Is that correct?
When you go into quick play solo (or championship or some others) and select your stage etc. there, you also have the option to chose the level of degradation you want.
If you do that and set it to maximum, it just transforms the stages and it really becomes a lot more enjoyable to drive.

@@GamerMuscleVideos Have you had a gravel stage where the surface degradation is on maximum by any chance?
Hope you don't mind me adding a bit more in regards to the handling itself.
I think the physics are in a good place generally speaking. WAIT! Continue reading please. Haha
There are two elements though I'd like them to work on more. The suspension for cars that aren't Rally3, Rally2 or Rally1 is a bit too forgiving. The other thing is what you mentioned as well where you start sliding the car but it then regains grip very quickly/aggressively. That's something which is really noticeable on tarmac (at least for me). You can work around it to a certain degree with the setup of the car such as adjusting the diffs in order to not make the rear end break out so abruptly. However, in a RWD car especially, but also FWD ones, it's not possible to have that natural throttle controlled slide. That's primarily down to the way torque based slip works in the game. I've actually discussed this in particular with Jon Armstrong, the ERC3 champion that's also a game developer for this title as you are aware of. If they can sort out the suspension in general, especially for the older cars, and the torque based slip issues on tarmac, I think the physics would be pretty spot on. Gravel to me feels really good, especially when the surface deg is set at maximum and tarmac is OK but mainly needs adjustments in the torque based slip department.

I agree. On PS5 it looks quite soft and blurry. Road surfaces and materials seem to be lacking detail, maybe it is bump mapping or an anisotropic filtering issue, but they look bland. It seems the internal rendering resolution is low. Some assets look very low poly and generally it has a lack of polish. This, combined with poor performance is bizarre. The actual handing, FFB, and driving can be quite fun, but as someone with a full rig, with dashboards, wind, and transducers, having no UDP is a big miss. Having no support for Moza wheels is utterly bizarre. The audio is excellent, but on the whole it feels like either the devs don’t have enough experience with Unreal engine to optimise it properly, or it has been rushed out. Very disappointing and in several ways it does feel like a side or downgrade from previous titles. I also really enjoyed rallycross in DR 2.0, so it is sad not to see that.

  • @Tony-1971
    @Tony-1971 Před 7 měsíci

Totally agree on the physics with regards to drifting. Its just like the last game, In the 4WD rally cars there is zero ability to throttle-oversteer once you get past 2nd gear on gravel. The throttle is limited, so its impossible to power-slide/drift on longer, faster bends. The Rally 1 cars should handle more like the RX cars did in DR2.0. You could actually hold a drift in the RX cars. The torque shouldn't drop off to almost zero after 2nd gear in a modern WRC car.
I've watched people drive on gravel in this new game and on 3rd gear bends the power drops off to almost zero, so you jab the brake to shift the weight forward again or flick the wheel to the inside, then open the throttle to try and get a bit of power oversteer going but the throttle is dead.
This is one of the reasons physics wise why RBR is still better than the Dirt Rally games. The cars have some torque in higher gears. They keep the throttle limited in these Dirt Rally games because it has to be fun for the casual gamer. Its a game that has to be fun for the widest audience possible, not the much smaller sim crowd. Its all about the dollars.
