  • Hello CZcamsrs
Are you a wedding or portrait photographer? Or do you want to become one? In this video I would like to share with you my opinion about the Sony lens line-up and especially about an affordable lens setup for wedding or portrait photography using Sony e mount full frame cameras. Many times people complained in the past ( including myself) about the price of Sony FE lenses and even the lenses made for the APS-C e mount lenses that they are overpriced and they simply do not worth their price. Is this the same issue over some years??? I don`t think so. It looks like Sony e mount users are lucky because Sigma and Tamron step in and they will design and produce some affordable but excellent quality zooms and primes . So let`s see a few examples and my choice for an effective and good quality lens setup for wedding photography or any event photography basically.

I switched from Canon to Sony about a year and a half ago... We (my wife and I ) currently shoot Weddings, events, and Portraits. we use an a7ii and a a7iii with a backup a7ii. (I plan on getting one more a7iii) for lenses I use Sony 85 f1.8 the Tamaron 28-75mm f2.8 (never had a moments trouble with focus) 35mm f2.8 Sony 55 f1.8 and the Sony 70-200 f4 (it is spectacular) I am going to order the Sony 16-35 f4 to round out my lenses......I love shooting with Sony gear smaller and lighter, eye autofocus plus the new tech they keep releasing .... Canon wanted me to pay through the nose for similar tech and I said enough. still have the 5d mkiii and think it is sold this week.

I think such a set up as described would be fine for weddings and portraits. My only additional need would be to have a lens ( prime or zoom ) wider than the Tamrons 28mm shortest focal length. It's going to be more difficult doing the superwide shots of all the guests collected together at the Wedding. The problem is that both the 16 - 35 f2.8 and cheaper 12 -24 f4 are hardly budget lenses. People have moaned about Sony's lack of telephoto primes and superzoom lenses but at the opposite end of the spectrum they are hardly awash with wide options either. The 24mm f2.8 from Samyang is very cheap but it's not giving much additional width over the 28mm of the Tamron. The next option would be again a Samyang but the 14mm f2.8, sadly this is manual focus only ( not that that is a serious issue in such a wide lens). Use focus peaking and it should be eaay to use. 😊

dunnymonster yes you are correct. I did a wedding with 3 primes though with Sony full frame a7R (28mm f2, 55mm f1. 8, and 90mm f2. 8 macro) and I have to admit that although I was a bit concerned about the wide angle, surprisingly I didn't even think about it. I could do all the wide shots with the 28mm. I don't say that this will work 100 out of 100, it might happen that you are in a situation that you really need a wider lens, but even than with a little bit of pain in the a.. s it can be done. Thanks for the constructive comment though. It is absolutely helpful.

Samyang / Rokinon have the AE AF 14mm f2.8. It has autofocus, around 600.00 and the have 35mm f2.8 AF for around 300.00. I got both of them when they first came out. Both have a nice finish/look, are light, relatively inexpensive, and pretty sharp. But they both struggle in some low light situations, and have no AF/MF switch, stil worth the price.

Vegan Marine thanks man for sharing this with us. I never had the possibility to try those lenses, but I will now. You made me curious.

Well both Tamron and especially Sigma do have AF issues on Sony cameras. With Sigma is kind of known story hit or miss while Tamron is more intermittent.

eagleeye photo I never experienced anything with Tamron, and with Sigma I think that the zoom lenses are not as accurate. The primes are good in my experience. But it is obvious that it won't be as consistent as the Sony ones. But hey if you know about the risk, you can work around no problems.

Blue Sky Photography Saw Tamron aknowledge the issue with AF 28-70 ,and some reports about Sigma Art prime AF issues. Can be fixed with firmware now day's.

Pavlo Iatsiuk Yep, I did not expect anything else.Tamron has a good customer service , at least that is my experiance.

Looks like Sony FF becomes cheaper that Fuji APS-C. For example Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 costs 1200. Fuji 56mm 1.2 - 1000

First Sony A7 should become popular as a cheap entry to the system

Pavlo Iatsiuk slowly slowly it's getting there. The higher quality line (GM) is still the most expensive, but at least now you can choose between the third party and the cheaper lineup.
Sony is growing to be a big part in our photography industry. 😉😉😉

BTW, Don't you know why Olympus is so expensive? For example Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 costs 1000$, 45mm f/1.2 - 1200$. How they going to survive when Sony FF becomes so affordable?

Pavlo Iatsiuk that is a brilliant question??? I don't know honestly. They will have to reduce the prices or talk to Tamron and Sigma 😂😂😂😂
