  • SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT is a documentary from Toïne Haverkamp that explores what backpacking is, during a nine-month search through well and lesser-known backpack spots in Asia.
👍Like and subscribe, and leave your favourite backpack spot in the comments!👍
The documentary gives a glimpse into the backpack scene. Shown from the perspective of a traveller who has never been outside his own continent.
During the trip the viewer is taken by other backpackers who will show all aspects of what backpacking has to offer.
You will see stories and images that we often see on Instagram, but more importantly, all the stories behind those enviable moments that we never hear.
For backpackers it will evoke a sense of recognition, and for the stay-at-homers an unique glimpse into the backpack scene.
The documentary is strongly music driven by the specially created soundtrack by the young producers Nikos & Nick (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and To.ne (Utrecht, the Netherlands).

    ✍️Directors note✍️:
Years ago more and more people in my environment decided to start backpacking. Besides the fact that I saw nice pictures on social media and heard all the fun stories, I hardly had an idea what backpacking was.
I became more and more curious why people like to leave everything behind and travel around the world, while sleeping in dorms, and trying to spend as little money as they possibly can. I couldn’t find much about this topic on the internet, besides travel guides or documentaries about personal quests. So I decided to go on research myself and go for nine months to Asia, to discover what makes backpacking so interesting for people that it becomes a way of life.
When I started years ago on my backpack documentary project "SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT", I had one goal. My goal was to inspire as much people as possible to step outside their comfort zone and start discovering. With more than 250 people coming to the premiere last year this was the first step. One year later I hope to reach and inspire more people with this public release.
Thank you for watching, your support and keep exploring!

Why more travellers don't understand that the locals are the key to unlocking a place, not a lonely planet book is beyond me... other travellers are cool, but when most activities are based around drinking, it doesn't feel like an adventure until you venture out by yourself. It's an amazing video thanks

Still come here to watch this whenever I feel like I’m stuck in a routine life and this doco put me at ease to just grab my backpack and go somewhere or anywhere in the world. I will never forget about our mate Nate and the time he was with us. He helped me and boosted my confidence to ride on my new purchased motorbike ( back then).
What an adventure it was! He was such a good and caring human being. My last memory of him was us sitting on those little chairs in a road side restaurant drinking Bia Hoi in Sapa. He was so happy and full of life. I asked him if he would like to join us for our next adventure but we spilt ways as he had plans to go to Thailand and us going to Nepal/India.
Backpacking was the best time of my life and I'm glad I did it when I could. It was always nice to cross path with you Toine and we will meet again.

I'm 50 and I backpack travelled when I was 30. This 6 month trip still brings back so many memories. I have never had any regrets of my backpack travels. It has changed my life forever. Ever since, I travel on and off to Thailand for my business and I met my lovely wife in Thailand. I cannot let the south-east asian life behind and hope to retire as soon as I can in Thailand. There is nothing more inspiring but travelling on your own and explore the world, not knowing where you will go, what you will see, what will happen and where you will sleep. The adventure brings you closer to local people, to life and to yourself. It brings you closer to the asian cultures, the food, the athmosphere and real life.

Jeez, that ending fucked me up... It's really, really dark that Nate died in a motorcycle accident considering he emailed his dad about wanting to sell his bike because he didn't really know how to use it, and the dad encouraging him not to. Very tragic, I hope he doesn't blame himself since he clearly meant well but he is probably dealing with a lot of guilt...
I don't know the exact circumstances of the accident and who was at fault, but either way his death should serve as a reminder to not push yourself when it comes to certain activities, like driving a motorcycle, especially in South East Asia where the roads are a free-for-all and bikers die in freak accidents on the daily. He seemed like a great guy and your doc is a great way of honoring his memory, RIP.

Absolute goosebumps! One of the most beautiful films I've seen on CZcams. It really reminded me of the many amazing experiences waiting out there for us.
I had the most incredible adventure myself backpacking through Colombia and Ecuador for 4 1/2 months, getting to know the language, places and people I couldn't have dreamt of. It totally changed my perspective on the world.
Sadly though for the last few years the pandemic made me feel just so numb and disconnected from the world that I kinda don't know any more where life's going for me.
Your film reminded me of the vastness of the earth and its different people. So thank you for sprinkling some colour into these gray days!

Hey cool work.. i think you cover the backpack perspective very well. I left NZ at 22 as felt a bit lost/disconnected from a bigger world. as a kid i use to hide in adventure books when things at home were a bit sh1t (which was often). In 1990 I moved to UK and shortly after hit the road for what turned out to be 2.5 years - so many amazing special adventures. I feel so lucky that i did this pre internet. I then slid back into career mode but was super lucky i got to travel a lot with work so the adventure never really stopped. I retired at 42 and spend typically 4-5 months / year travelling. I am now 53 and i still backpack. I either cycle or motorcycle or public transport. I either camp / hostel or sometimes just sleep a little rough. I only ever really street food it and i always take 3rd class transport. I typically travel solo but am never lonely. These days I have more than enough money to stay in nice hotels / restaurants etc but i never do - i simply find no joy or adventure in that.. I never returned to NZ to live (nor ever will). Asia is my home for past 22 years as that is where i feel most connected to . On the road is also where i feel at home (but not so much in so called developed countries). these days it takes a lot more to wow me 'tourist site wise" but my biggest buzz has always been wildlife experiences or simply sitting on the sidewalk chatting with the locals and acting up simply to make the kids and parents and grandparents laugh with (or at) me. . My travel experiences contribute to keeping me very humble and i appreciate my nice simple and super adventurous contented life. So thanks a lot for promoting such a positive perspective to life on the road...

This was so amazing. Every second, I loved it. You definitely have a gift for making documentaries!!
I was able to make such a connection with you and your friends. I was smiling in the end hearing what everyone went home to do and was so happy but so heartbroken for Nate. He died doing what he enjoyed. Wow this was amazing. Thank you for sharing your travels so well!

Hands down one of the very best documentaries on youtube, the pace, the mood, the interviews, the music.... Wonderful... When something has the ability to stir your emotions then it has to special. I stumbled upon this while searching for backpacking tips and was mesmerized. I really hope you make something now and then, I have recommended this to a lot of people. 😁
