- On May 19, 2018, three friends set out from the Mexican border on a 2,650 mile journey to hike to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). This is their story. Unscripted, raw … a look into the wild, strange, beautiful lifestyle of a 5-month thru-hike across America.

Traversing some of the most stunning, remote wilderness and landscapes of California, Oregon and Washington, sharing beauty with the John Muir Trail in the Sierras, and climbing amongst the jagged Cascade Range in the PNW, the 2,650-mile PCT is truly unique in its diversity and majesty. Backpacking and exploring the trail is a privilege we often take for granted, and wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of the Pacific Crest Trail Association (www.pcta.org), which has been developing, protecting and advocating for the PCT since 1977. They are the glue that binds the trail together, and are responsible for thousands of hiker's dreams coming true. If you feel led, please head to this link (www.pcta.org/donate/#donate) and think about supporting them in one way or another so they can continue to make the trail accessible for everyone, and protect the natural wonder it takes us through.
Happy trails, wherever they take you!
I can’t believe you included me in your fabulous ( my favorite) PCT documentary. You are more than generous. I still treasure the framed pictures you gave me. I love you both and hope our paths cross again some time. I will love you both forever . Love, Mama Bear 🐻
MAMA BEAR. I was hoping you would see this at some point! Thank you for the role you played in this journey, and for helping us get over one of our lowest points on trail. You are such a light of joy, much love from Rad and Bugs!
I'M thankful for you, TOO, for being his Mama Bear when I could not!
Well done Maman Bear
Good of you...
People like you are going to heaven. Thanks for what you do. I thought of you and hoped you would be rewarded for your kindness to this incredible voyage.
True angel ♡
This comment section warms my soul in a way I've never felt before. I'm 31, and I long to find even a portion of the love shown in these comments!
I've watched every Pct documentary I can find and lived vicariously through everyone who has completed this extraordinary journey. Nothing has touched me quite like your film and the way you've so elegantly captured the essence of a thru hike and the significance of the people who helped make your journey. Simply amazing and a privilege to have watched.
Nick I appreciate the encouragement man, thanks for sharing. Stoked you resonated with it so deeply!
I'm a current senior at the school you went to and just watched this as a Dorm (Mbega). This left us speechless yet so much questions and thoughts. Impressed by your motivation and the desire to carry out your childhood dream is just so inspiring and a great example for us. And it once again reminded me how infinitely majestic God and His creation is and His faithfulness to us. He is the God who provides and the God who lead. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible journey!
Hey Jimin, love that! Stoked you guys played it at Mbega and the message of God's majesty came through. Appreciate the kind words.
You're so kind, Jimin! I love the connections I'm finding on here!
As a photographer and someone who dreams of hiking the PCT, this doc was an incredibly inspirational journey. Truly film festival material. Thanks for helping keep the spark of my own dreams alive!
Thanks Adam super kind of you!
You are do right.
One of the best pct documentary i've watched.
🙏
The best
Yes. This is the best thru hike movie I have ever watched. So well done. Great music soundtrack used and probably cost a bundle to use. The key to why it was so good was the focus on the stories of the individual people on the journey. I got a huge surprise to see Ali (Road runner) feature as a main character in this story as she is an acquaintance of mine in Australia and I knew she had hiked the pct in 2018. So great to see part of her journey. It was worth the 1-2 years to edit this to get this sort of quality engagement. That is what it takes to produce this level of professional content. Well done Chris. Blue Boy
@@BlueBoyBackpacking thanks man, and that's awesome you know Road Runner, what a small world!
@@chriscartermedia Small world indeed. After watching some footage of her, I now know why she has the trail name road runner - she runs down the hills like the road runner cartoon bird.... Classic.
I don't know why, but when you were crying on the last mile I was crying with you. The images, colors and emotions you captured really were superb and incredibly inspiring - thank you for sharing!
Me too. I walked on my treadmill while watching this 😂. It’s amazing and beautiful
Same.
I was too, and I agree that his coverage of his journey was beautiful, poetic and compelling. I am more than impressed and moved by his persistence and strength! Doing a video blog of the experience for months in addition to the hiking, cooking, setting up camp and dealing with injuries, adds so much more work, effort and focus. THANK you for sharing this loveliness with us.
I really enjoyed this. He should be a mini series or a movie. You have a wonderful 👍 voice. May the peace 🕊️ of Christ surround you and all who watch this.
Perfect documentary! I've recently fallen in love with the PCT through films like this one. I've never thru hiked but I know now that I have to one day I don't know how or when but I simply have to it stirs something in my soul watching content like this
What a humbling travel.
Turning teens into philosophers.
I would sit in my room as a 14 yr old boy with BackPacking Magazine and stare at the pictures of the Sierra Wilderness dreaming one day I would find myself there looking out of my tent at the beauty all around. I’m 59 yrs old now. Thank you for your marvelous documentary. You rekindled the flame of a life long dream.
Wow Mark thank you for sharing that. I'm glad you resonated with it, and that it inspired you! I hope you get the chance to fulfill that childhood dream one day. Those mountains changed my life.
Just go Mark
I ‘m 68 years old and to young to die.
@@BikerHarryNL love it.
Fifteen minutes in and I'm spellbound. I've already in my head quit the 9-to-5, will be leaving for the Mexico border ASAP.
Did you take the leap?
@@RubGeeBoi In my head, yes! I did an awesome interview with Chris. It's one of our most popular episodes ever: www.buzzsprout.com/268133/7420984 I'll be filming with him when he comes through my town during his AT hike, interview, drone shots and the like.
@@EverestMystery great listen, keep it up!
@@RubGeeBoi truly honored, thank you!
An unforgettable experience that's worth more than anyrhing you can own Great adventure.
Underrated video
A truly outstanding video. Your writing, narration, filmography, editing are truly superb. I've seen many PCT videos, yours stands out giving the essence of the trials, tribulations and the truly amazing scenery. I'd nominate this for a film award if possible.
ditto! all of the above. incredibly beautiful. thank you for taking the time and sharing your gift.
So Well done! I'm a 58 year old Canadian male (yup part of the endangered species) Thank you so much for posting this. The humanity, and uplifting effect , during the sad covid shutdown at Christmas is literally a much needed gift. I have watched quite a few of these in the last couple of years and this was easily one of the best. Thank you again!
Thanks Gary, I'm stoked you liked it! The Covid shutdown has definitely made me miss this lifestyle and the open trail.
This is Mosey, I was about 5 days ahead of you at Tuolumine Meadows. Since you were doing much bigger days than I, we probably crossed paths somewhere around Tahoe. EMT, pronounced "Empty" and I took a zero in South Lake Tahoe. I was solo when I got to the Hat Creek Rim and had hiked through smoke since leaving the half way point. That night I stayed at the Burney Guest Ranch and the next morning it was so smoky that I decided to flip to Washington, that was August 9th. Knowing that there were still trail closures in and around the northern terminus I started SOBO from Stevens Pass on August 26 and hiked to the Columbia where I finally left the trail for the season. I tried again in 2019 but injured my back near San Jacento and left the trial after trying to get well off the trail for 5 days. I August 2019 I went back to Burney and sectioned the rest of California and then on to Willamette Pass where once again I left the trail and went home. We all know how 2020 went, no hiking. This year, 2021, I'm planning to go back to Willamette Pass and go to the northern terminus. I have such a longing for the trail and your film reenforced my love of through hiking. Hope to finish the trail this year but I still long to go back to Campo, once again, and complete the journey in one season. Wishing everyone, Happy Trails. "Mosey"
I've watched countless PCT thru-hike documentaries and this by far will go down as one of my top 5 videos. Very well-done, thought-out production. Also, very inspirational journey with many highs, lows and heart-felts short stories mixed within. Very much enjoyed watching it and sharing the journey you'al went on.
" *The joy of the adventure lies more in the community than the landscapes that you travel through and that a journey is measured more in friends than it is in miles* "
- Chris “Rad” Carter
I'm 30 years old with kids. I did small hikes between 5 and 50 miles as a teenager. before I watched this video last month I had not hiked for over 10 years. This video just came up in my suggested videos and now I am planning the john muir trail and others! Well done video! I am so happy I am back into hiking. I hike 5 to 10 miles every day in Tucson AZ.
'Epic' doesn't express what you captured, Chris. This experience is now officially on my bucket list when I retire from the military in a few years thanks to how you captured this. To the 17 'thumbs down'-get your heads checked. From just the editing/cinematography of this to capturing the emotions during the experience, no other way to put it than 'well done!'
Haha thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! Best of luck to you, I hope you get to pursue that dream some day, and thank you for your service!
j k I began in the Fall of 2018. My military experience (USMC infantry) made some of the life much more easy for me than for many hikers half my age, BUT there were things I still had to learn.
Kit weight and logistics required a serious adjustment. You are on your own (some exceptions obviously), and that is a different dynamic than the team effort of military operations. Also, military gear tends to be ruggedized/heavy duty which = too heavy for daily long miles. Compromises have to be made. I still do not like flimsey gear, but the load has to be manageable. I don't go with the flimsey popular hiker footwear, and I carry "camp shoes", a good survival kit, etc. (Extra weight), but I minimize on my shelter by using a small tarp and/or a bivy top (I cut out the bottom, zipper and snaps). I have minimized my first aid, and I have worked toward more dual-purpose gear/clothing options such as a lightwight raincoat that doubles as a windbreaker (not ideal for either, but it works).
My biggest recommendations for long hikers (long in days out no less than long in distance covered) is nothing new, but I still see far too many hikers who miss the point (which is ok as a personal choice, but still sad imo).
I simply recommend to not forget:
It's about the journey, not the destination
Cold Kills,
Nature is Neutral, and
Mountains Don't Care
I learned that last part a few years back from an old Eagle Scout/Scout Master.
@@treebeardtheent2200 I look forward to carrying lighter, more functional equipment! I'm USMC infantry as well, and while some of our gear has improved in function over the decades, the weight surely has not-or we simply carry too much for short missions out of irrational fear of the 'worst'! Tracking on having to sort out log support and travelling light to better chances of finishing something like this or any multi-day hike. Hear you on footwear; I've never used any minimalist shoe and surely won't w/ my feet now! I've latched onto a saying I've heard from civ hikers-'you carry what you fear'-and for me, that's something 'comfortable' to sleep on and chow!!-so I'm figuring out how to to shave some ounces/lbs for a sleeping mat that will hold up (or rely on a hammock), and not eat all my PB and nutella the day after a re-supply! S/F
Incredible capture of the true spirit of long distance hiking, felt like I was there (again).
The narration is like a poem praising how wonderful the nature is
I'm in agreement with lots of people who think this needs a bigger audience. Having hiked a bunch of the pictures, it was like seeing an old friend..... The bridge over the Columbia, the Oregon/Washington marker ....the rain, the rain...and the.... anyway lol. Great movie, the snow we hit near Stevens pass nearly stopped us, it was cool to see you guys push through everything... Hiking is a mind game, you guys kick@$$!! Thanks. :)
Appreciate the kind words Vinny!
To Measure A Mile; To Measure A Life. Thank you for reminding us how important the natural & wide world is to all of us!
Every pct video I watch makes me insanely emotional. I cried when you started crying at the last mile and I have never done a through hike, I can only imagine the feelings you described. Truly bitter sweet. I hope to do this one day.
Thank you for making this. Cried at the end. Never be ashamed to cry when you feel things this important.
You have the wisdom of an older person while being able to speak to younger people.
Can't believe a gem of a content like this is available for free on CZcams.
This video is just phenomenal.
The photography in this video, & quality of editing... just magnificent. Tugging at my heart... Thanks & Bless you. Keep walkin!
Chris, EPIC video. One of THE BEST I have seen in my 9 years of following hikers on the PCT... it brought back many memories... I attempted this hike in 2012 (heart issue kicked me off) and in 2017 (micro fractures and then giardiasis kicked me off). You story telling is amazing... your video pro level... this is an amazing documentary... Thank you for sharing your experience, journey and thoughts.... Cheers man...
Man Steve I really appreciate the kind words! I'm stoked that it resonated with you and brought back some good memories. I'm sorry to hear that injuries prevented you from finishing before, but any time spent in those mountains is life-changing!
Hey Chris, congratulations on finishing the PCT and on producing such a wonderful documentary. (My favorite) Also, thank you for every time you stopped to pull out your camera when every part of your body and mind didn’t want to!
Thanks Tim I appreciate the kind words. And thanks for recognizing that haha, it’s a struggle at times but also capturing the world around you helps take your mind off the monotony, and focus on the artistic side of creation.
WOW... not sure if exist a word/s to describe such a master piece! mind blowing and just perfect! thanks!! greetings from an Argentinian in USA!
The kindness of that woman at 10-12 minutes is beyond generous
This documentary made me laugh, smile, cry, and experience every other emotion, that I can’t describe with words. Movie is absolutely brilliant in terms of filmography, but what made me hooked from the very beginning is that you captured life in a way that it actually is. Sometimes simple, sometimes tough, and mostly unpredictable.
Thank you for inspiring, I can’t wait to measure my own miles!
Thanks for the kind words Anastasia.
This is an ABSOLUTELY fantastic documentary! Honestly the footage you captured is stunningly incredible - and your description of everything is just so so so so good!!! I loved everything about this! I’ve been obsessed with learning about thru hiking - and so have watched a ton of videos….and this by far is the best!! Thank you so much. I’m EVEN more inspired now!!
Have never done a thru-hike and honestly not much hiking. Was introduced to the PCT by Dixie/ homemade Wanderlust and have watched several other documentaries on it, but this is by far the best one I've ever seen! Thanks for the inspiration.
Simply put, I can't believe how good this doc was. Bravo, and thank you!
And the Oscar goes to...Chris Carter!
Thanks man for this awesome film and the incredible storytelling. On of the best videos I've ever watched on CZcams.
No FKT's, no records...just a story about the true spirit.
Thank you very much!
All the best...stay safe!

From time to time I find something that reminds me of the simple beauty of walking. I too am a thru-hiker. The indelible mark it leaves draws a new line as to what I can do and what I want to do. Thank you for sharing your story.
"The joy of the adventure lies more in the community than the landscapes you travel through and that a journey is measured more in friends you make than the miles you travel" Well done Chris.
Michael I appreciate it man, and I'm stoked you resonated with it!
The pct is not the end to a book. It’s the conclusion to a grand chapter!
Beautiful account of their trip. I would pay to watch this in a movie theatre.
🙏🙏
I’m actually in awe. I am a Life Scout, I hike/camp/backpack all over Yosemite, Kennedy Meadows, etc. I have loved the outdoors from a young age, and you have captured the emotion experienced on the trail, the friends, and everything. Great job, keep it up!!
I'm now 18 and I've always wanted to hike the pct. I've watch thousands of videos on people's journey and yours has to one of the most spectacular I've seen.
Keep that dream alive.
That WAS amazing ! Definitely gonna have to watch again !
One of the most captivating things I've ever watched. A real inspiring documentary that makes you want to get up and make it happen. Much Respect from South Africa
I agree with Chip Carters comment, absolutely the best trail movie. I just finished watching and I am bummed its over. I have got to say I felt all your emotion at the end. From the desert, to rock climbing, to the winter challenges up in the Cascades. What a journey!
I really appreciate it man, I'm stoked you resonated with it!
Man this was seriously so good. What an accomplishment, both the hike and the film
What an incredible journey. Thanks for sharing 👣
Man, that was awesome! Thank you for the inspiration.
This is amazing, loved every second!
Beautiful! I'm a hiking video junkie and have watched everything I can on the PCT and CDT. This is among the best. Thoughtfully narrated, shot and edited, you captured both the physical beauty of this adventure and the emotional challenge of the accomplishment. Well done and congratulations on your feat.
Thanks Nicholas I appreciate the kind words man! Stoked you resonated with it.
Amazing. Thank you for taking us with you!!!
What fun to stumble onto this gem of a film. Thanks!
I have watched your documentary several times ...And I always cry along with you at the end of your journey.
Absolutely fantastic, I will definitely be back to watch again and again...
Thank you for filming such a beautiful piece. It was great watching you accomplish such a huge bucket list.
Absolutely the BEST Pacific Crest Trail movie! You inspired me! It made me feel like I was there! It made me want to BE THERE! Wow! Thank you so much for whatever it took to create this! It was wonderful!
You're the best!!
Thank you for making this film.
This is one of a coolest things I have ever seen on internet.
this trail almost killed me twice, in 2003 and in 2020, what I like about this is that this video shows the upside and the down sides of the trail, this video was inspirational! You guys are rad!
Enjoyed this doccie very much. I find these days that making the time to create such wonderful experiemces and memories is becomming much harder. Being stuck in the rat race I crave being in nature. What a way to do it. Thanks for sharing your experience. (South Africa)
One of the best PCT documentaries EVER!
This is absolutely epic!!! What a fantastic piece of cinematography and what a journey! True inspiration!
Incredible job on this documentary! Beautiful cinematography, excellent narration, and great music. I hope to see more films from you!
That was awesome! Congratulations on finishing that goal and may the memories of it make you happy and content each time you revisit your journey!
Wow! I absolutely loved this!! Thank you so much for sharing!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Incredible film - felt like I was right there! Thank you for sharing your journey, absolutely beautiful scenic video.
Hiking the pct soon. Ive watched a ton. This documentary is perfect to show friends and family. Thank you cc for sharing.
Amazing just damn amazing journey. Great work completing the hike and on a well made inspirational documentary, Chris.
Incredible! :) The people who helped you along the way as well, a huge boost for you guys!
What a fantastic film. I enjoyed every minute of this.
Few things...
1) This film was insightful, thought provoking, and elicited emotion that I didn't think it would going in.
2) I love the rawness of this. Everyone brags about FKTs, gear weight, etc. This film broke away from that and focused on just what the experience really is, not planning and gear, but struggle, triumph, and friendship (with both humans and Nature herself)
3) This Spotify playlist is now one of my go-to listens for a feel-good pick me up. Stellar musical choices!
4) F*#king KUDOS!!! You rocked this trail!!!!!!
Maybe we'll see ya 'out there'
Much gratitude,
Molly Lou
Appreciate the kind words Molly 🙏🙏
Thank you for a great story and journey!! Can't wait for my time!
Loved every minute!! Happy Trails!!
That's really beautiful, man. Wonderfully written, and the footage was nothing short of breathtaking. Thank you for documenting your journey, and as hopefully a future PCT alumnus, many thanks for the inspiration and best of luck with your adventures through life.

When you love hiking, a doco like this is so vicariously mesmerising, felt myself getting teary at missing out. Loved it and thanks so much for making the film.
Watching this documentary was one of the most surreal experiences I've had. As an ardent hiker myself, this is my ultimate bucket list. I'm from India, miles away...I don't know how but someday I'm gonna do this ! Cheers to fellow hikers !!
