- In this video, my BMW friends bring me the front half of a 5L40E trans that keeps burning the clutches out. I go through the pump and find the pressure reg valve worn, this is a common problem. I show the wear and what i do to fix the problem and reassemble the pump. I shot this video a few months ago, and spoke to the shop owner about this car and he said all is well. Enjoy

Gary, i´ve got a Range Rover 5l40e in my workshop, with the direct/reverse frictions burned out. No drive forward or reverse. Saw this video and it helped me put the pump back together and a bonus, with the new Transgo pressure regulator valve replacement, i hope i have found why this transmission failed. Don´t what i´d do without you. You´re a genius Man!!!!! Thankyou.
Thank you
Professor Gary
I continued my training with your videos, good idea to center the pump with a collier🤗🤗🤗
abd ZFC63 yes,itis
Great tip, working on a 5l50E rebuild now, hoping the pump isn't shot - but will be checking it out prior to reassembly.
Its a very common problem, i change every valve when i work on these. Another common issue is a worn Actuator feed limit valve in the valvebody, when worn it can caue flared shifts, i ream it and put an oversized valve in. Gary
love your videos
+john CR Thanks john
hello gary i have a problem with my 5l40e i am repairing it and i am losing liquid even though i have changed the pump casing and retain it may be lost somewhere else or it will be wrongly put on the cap and changed transgokit boost valve feed limit valve and new friction discs Thank you I love you!
professeur Gary
tu as mis un collier pour centrer la pompe, génial l idée
Hello, sorry, english please(i dont see anything to translate)
Garry thanks for your videos very helpfull do you have the part number for the transo tool kit thanks from El paso Texas
Which kit, the one with the valves?
hello i need help with a transmission gm 5l40e to arm or a manual to arm
Please let me know how hard it is to replace the 3 shift solenoids, TCC and EPC on an 5L40E transmission. Thank you Professor Gary.
No, not bad, i do believe the valvebody may have to come down for the epc and lock-up solenoid(i think) but when the pan is down, you will know if you have enough room
I use the 4l60e pressure regulator valve in place of the 5l40e worn pressure regulator valve with no problem so far
Yes, i think i heard of that, do you get a new sonnax valve?
My 01 bmw 530i with the gm 5l40e slips when its cold, but its totally fine when its warm. I took it to a trans shop and they said when they went to check the fluid level, sprayed out at them. Do you know what this could be?
Maybe the trans is overfull, any codes?
Hi Gary! I have a 2003 BMW X5 with a 5L40 GM gearbox. Couple days ago when I first started my car and put in D the cor doesn`t move at all. Gently accelerate than it started to move and after couple of seconds everything is back to normal. Gears are changing very smooth no other issues. Checked it with computer and no fault codes in the transmission. Also if I put in R first thing it does move backward but not forward. Any suggestion or recommendation? Oil and filter changed every 60000 miles and it has 185000 miles in it so I drove 5000 miles since oil and filter changed. There were no metal particles or anything like that in the pan when serviced.
ok, question, does this happen when the car is hot but ok when the car is cold?
@@GaryFerraro It happens only when it's cold. When hot everything is ok. I thought about the oil pressure but than it should do it other way around...
@@atomeromu wat was the problem, please
@@aaff8706 Basically I kept driving with that fault and couple of month later when I tried to take off at the traffic light there was a "bang" noise and the jeep didn't move anymore. Got it towed to the local gearbox specialist and they've founded out the front driveshaft output broke in the transferbox which is no longer in production. While it was there I told to them to open the gearbox and find out what was wrong with it too. They told me the lock up clutch was nearly worn down to the metal and one of the valve in the valve body wasn't doing it's job properly so basically full reconditioning was required. I've got quoted €3000+Vat to do it and decided to sell it as is, because it just wasn't worth it. Sad story, the joys of BMW motoring... So bought a Toyota and no problems ever since
@@atomeromu thanks Very much
bonjour Gary

Hello out customer gearbox changes gears perfectly after 400k km on but customer said car lack of power at low rpms and while accelerating it feels like clutch slipps a bit when accelerating even on 5th gear rpms drops by +\- 300rpms while keeping accelerator at same position.
Sorry for bad English but I hope you understand. Thanks for help
Would a torque converter clutch stuck off code P0741 lead to a bad solenoid?
Well, it could be a number of things and the solenoid could be one of them.
Hi Gary, since I already had to deal around with automatic transmission problems with both GM and ZF transmissions, my mechanic reached out for my help today. But I'm stuck here - He got a 05 BMW X3 with the 5L40 that has a strange problem. You can only shift it between P and D. As soon as you shift from P to anything else, the trans is in D mode. It stays in D also when you shift it into neutral or reverse. The other thing is, the forward drive works normally and shifts smooth but suddenly the transmission goes into fail safe mode. Turn off and on again and you're good to go forward - still NO neutral nor reverse - until the next fail safe coffee break. The shifter and the cable down to the trans are both okay and work correctly.
It would be awesome if you could give me a tip what could possibly cause this weirdness. Thanks and kind regards, Alex
Does it have code P0705?
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for your reply. No, it doesn't throw any code. I meanwhile found a forum post in x-outpost of a guy who had 1:1 the same issue. Didn't have reverse nor did he have neutral, only moved forward + trans didn't throw codes. The issue in his case was a seized forward clutch. It's said to come when you do heavy trailer pulling with the car and as I've learned the lady who owns this particular X3 has a horse trailer and frequently "drives her horse around" :))
@@alexejovicmueller2978 ok, sorry i misunderstood you, i thought it was always reading drive on the scan tool. Yes, does sound like a clutch pack is locked togther and will not release
@@GaryFerraro Thanks man. My buddy will take out the trans next week and we're gonna have a look. I'll post up whatever we find out ;)
Funny, I just attached this transmission to the bmw 2.5l inline 6 on Saturday, wonder how the pump in that one is, ~175k miles. Won't matter, we are selling it quick after the power train goes back in. I do have a question though, the MAF was malfunctioning so we drove it ~15 miles and it hard shifted the entire time due to no MAF input, am I looking at a lot of worn clutch material or a little? Should I change this transmission fluid and clean the cooler before running the vehicle?
+Chance George Is the MAF Fixed, if not do that first, a poorly running engine will affect transmission operation.
Will be putting a new maf before start up, just want to make sure we have what's left of the transmission.
Install the new sensor and see how it shifts,
+Gary Ferraro will do, thanks.
Do u a complete rebuild video the 5l40e?
Not as yet, haven't had any in a while
I had my 5l40e rebuilt 6 months ago but 2weeks after the rebuild the transmission makes a slight whine when decelerating from 25mph. Other than that it's great. Any clues what it might be?
If you accelerate does the noise go away, like if you on and off the gas?
@@GaryFerraro Yes, if I accelerate it goes away. It only whines when I'm decelerating at 20 - 25 mph. Decelerating at higher speeds everything is good.
@@jbird125 Have it check, may be your diff making noise
Hello Garry what is that blu grease you are using called please .?
That is called Trans Gel, another company calls it assembly goo
I rebuilt my own 5l40e of my 04 bmw X5. I've replaced everything on it (pistons, frictions, solenoids, and all seals, including the pump kit). I have a gear check error on 3 and sometimes 4 with notable slip. 5th gears seems to shift fine with no slip. I am not driving it since I cannot renew the tags it because of having the check engine light on (CA law). I did not use the alignment clamp for the pump and I am wondering if a misaligned pump stator or shaft can cause my pressure drop on higher gears. I've checked all the electrical and everything checks out. Nothing else inside the pump as signs of wear can be found. Fluid is clean. I know I will have to align it since I can feel some vibration in the engine that was not there before (very minor), but I am just wondering if that will solve my issue. All clearances of internal clutches are within specs, so I am out of options at this point and any input that you can give me, would be greatly appreciated.
Nacho Biness Hello,
DOes sound like your loosing pressure, question, is it doing the same thing before and after overhaul?
When you say you installed a pump kit, what does this pump kit consist of? gary
there is a whistle sound like it loses pressure. I noticed after that is hasn't been the same. I took the car to AAMCO and they wanted to replace the DME ( We've tested other DME and TCM and the same result). New seals, pressure valve and springs (no play at all) and even the new pump vanes. Even in Sport manual mode it slips in gear 3 and 4. I have not changed the bushings though, but they do not look that worn out. As far as the pump, there is very little wear on the bell housing side. My initial problem was the torque converter. I've installed another valve body from a running vehicle and still no 3 and 4 (they do go in after slipping a bit, but then it goes into emergency mode). It was not doing that after the overhaul and it ran for about a month, and it hasn't been the same. All the molded pistons were replaced with the proper tools, so no damage on them. The forward sprag and the direct clutch looked burnt before and frictions were worn but nothing broken. even replaced the torque converter twice under warranty since I thought it maybe was an internal leak but nothing. We are taking it down again and aligning the pump with the clamp that I ordered but I am not sure if that will fix my issue. I do hear that whistling noise that starts when I give it gas in drive. Reverse, 1st, 2nd, and 5th shift very well and it has awesome torque from a standstill, but just the 3rd and 4th gears are my issues and haven't found anything online or on bmw tsb that duplicates my issue.
If the pressure reg valve bore is ok, one other thing that comes to mind that would cause this problem is the actuator feed limit valve, i always ream the bore and put an oversized valve in. Transgo has a kit for this. This valve is located, i believe next to the EPC solenoid(was the epc solenoid replaced?) What year is your car?
Where are you located?
I am in Orange County, California. I will order that kit. I saw it for $115 on eBay. I really hope that, along with the new bushings and pump alignment do the trick. I could actually do the valve body last since I won't have to remove the transmission for the 5th time. lol. I did try a valve body from a running vehicle with the same number and with the same result, so I am more inclined to the internals of the transmission. I will try making a video of the bushing replacement and reassembly to log the what I've done. I've done a few transmissions and by no means, I am a pro, but I have never run into something like this. I will post an update in the next two weeks. I greatly appreciate your help Gary. Thank you.
I want ask you about rainer transgo can we see How will use it thanks
+MOHAAD AHMED Sorry, i do not understand rainer transgo
I mean that trasgo kit you show Reamer how can you will used and can we see video for that .
+MOHAAD AHMED Ok, That reamer is used for the actuator feed limit valve(orAFL) this valve supplies the solenoids with oil, when the bore wears(usually when hot) it will cause flared shifts. As soon as i get one in, i will film that. Gary
I have an 330xda with I suppose 5l40. Its been rebuilt few months ago, but there is problem when it warms up. It doesnt take D. It goes for manual but choices to go for N. Cold its kind of okay, maybe slipping a bit. Where you think I should start?
Drop the pan, see if the pan is clean, does this stop moving when hot? almost sounds like the filter is clogging up
@@GaryFerraro The Gear stick IS a bit stiff when putting Gear on D and a bit in general also. I think unprofessional work is also possibility, where would they go wrong?
What you may have to do is disconnect the linkage at the trans to see if the problem is inside the transmission or not. Disconnect the cable and move the lever to see how it moves, if tight drop the pan, you should be able to see the linkage
@@GaryFerraro Im gonna Look into IT.If you van help me with diagnostics as I have better base info about IT.Im sure your Guy feeling IS a lot More precise than mine.
@@GaryFerraro Is there easily fitting gearboxes which tolerate More Power and torgue instead The original gm5l40 in 330xd E46?
No,I usually take them out of used pumps
Good deal.

My boss is very cheap and old fashioned that's why I have to come up with cheap ways to get the transmissions out the door
I guess as long as they go out the door, its all good
