  • In this video, i teardown a 5 speed RWD caddy transmission called a 5L40E.This trans had no movement hot. There are special tools that are required to install the molded pistons, we will take a look at that next week. some weak points that should be addressed when working on these units are the pressure regulator valve and the Actuator feed limit (AFL) valve. I use Transgo Drop in Reg valve and oversized AFL Valve. Next week we will overhaul the valvebody and address the AFL valve, i Vacuum test it first then ream it for the oversized valve. Thanks for watching, Please Like, subscribe, thumbs up. Thanks all. Happy Easter

    Man this video just explained so much. Haven’t drove my Pontiac g8 in 3 months because it stops accelerating after warming up, I’ll come to a stop and nothing. Turn the car off, let it cool down, and good to drive for another 5 minutes. No codes came up either. I’m afraid I’ll need a trans rebuild after watching this

    Thanks a lot for sharing a detailed teardown of this transmission. I am currently in the process of tearing down one from a BMW X3, and wonder if there are internal differences in the 5l04e transmission between the different makes and models (Like Cadillac, BMW X3, X5 etc ?) My reason for asking is that i have a X5 transmission in good condition and have (unsuccessfully) tried to find some information online if this would work as a replacement or not.

    Have the same year make and model but had a trans cooler line blow and bypassed radiator for external cooler. After flushing trans and filling back up it shifts hard and slips until the car is warmed up. What could possibly be the issue there? I thought gear wear from the fluid leaking but don't understand why it would shift fine when warmed up. any insight would he appreciated thanks

    My personal truck is 05 caddy srx 3.6, awd with borg warner 4476 t case, and 5l40e auto box. I found a bulletin, regarding trans output shaft \ tcase input shaft flanges, stripping out their splines due to corrosion. Any comment on that would be appreciated.
    My truck makes a really scary driveline pop, when loading up on the throttle, from a stop. Im thinking tcase chain, those input \output flanges, front prop shaft, or maybe even hub n bearing n cv axle engagement.
    I gotta get it on an alignment rack, and try duplicating the problem. Jackstanding the truck, i failed to duplicate.
    Bulletin showed rust dust build up, once getting the tcase off. Supposedly new shafts are redesigned to accept an oring to keep water intrusion out! 😅

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  Před 3 měsíci +1

      sounds like the chain is popping, if you pull the T-case off, you can clean up where it meets the trans and put some high temp grease, that will help

    • @sidewayzmike
      @sidewayzmike Před 3 měsíci

      @@GaryFerraro I'm sure it is, as well. I added a chain replacement, when I sent the 5l40e off for a bench rebuild, about 60k ago. Sent the transfer case with the 5l40e. Valve body bought the farm, and I said additional complaint was driveline pop on hard load.
      When I had on jack stands (about a week ago) I decided to do a drain and refill, and while the tcase was empty, I stuck a screwdriver inside the drain hole of tcase, to assess the chain slack, didn't seem sloppy....but who knows it could be the sprocket teeth starting to roll over for all I know.
      The trans shop put gl5 (thick gear oil) in the tcase when they did a new chain (that's what came out last week). I decided to put dex 3 in it, to hopefully clean any junk inside, and I'm gonna try and drain that in next 1000 miles...figured the atf detergents might help lol. I just hate knowing that I found that gm tsb about the trans output shaft\ tcase input shafts stripping....
      Maybe I am looking too much into it, without pulling it apart. That means, I need to literally cripple the truck for that diagnosis! 😁🤷

    Hi, does anyone knows is there any (especially major) differences between these gearbox in: E39, E46, E38, E53? or are they the same and can be successfully swapped 1:1 independently of car's model and engine? I'm asking, because I need to replace malfunctioned box in my E39 530d and I was wondering if I can swaps it to box from E46 320d? I have read somewhere, that there's no differences at all - besides shaft connection (which can be simply use from old gearbox). But what about Hydrokinetic clutch? Does it the same type for all 5L40E, or depends the car's engine? Many thanks for any answer :-)
