He emerged in Otello in 1964 and his voice as it sounds here, was still thrilling and large, but of course not as huge as it once was. I still believe he was a vocal Phenom and a great tenor.
Non trovo altri interpreti, che, dopo circa 30 anni di carriera, hanno la voce intatta, ferma come a 25 anni !!! nemmeno quando cantava Un amore così grande ,che era il 1976,aveva la voce tremolante...un fenomeno vocale e sopratutto una persona di cultura...
Una voce senza tramonto. Peccato che fu colpito da questo malore che lo porto' via in eta' non troppo avanzata. Avrebbe cantato fino a oltre 80 anni come Lauri Volpi. Un grandissimo artista!!!

E anche quando da giovane ne aveva in quantità eccedente, spesso non la dominava e pareva quasi stonare...non voglio certo offuscare la memoria di un artista onorato nel mondo. Ma dal punto di vista del timbro e dell'espressività non c'è partita con del Monaco e non solo con lui. Ma Volpi aveva un grande opinione di sé medesimo. Il Lauri se lo aggiunse per incoronarsi vieppiù e in uno dei suoi libri, criticava aspramente le voci dopo di lui che definiva Epigoni ma in senso decadente. Insomma aveva un caratterino, tanto per rispondere a coloro che chiamano Mario vanaglorioso...non lo era affatto. Ma anche Volpi è una nostra gloria.

Senza voler difendere alcuno, osservo che c'è da considerare la mutata (e degenerata) situazione sociale attuale. Infatti, è inutile prendersela con i cantanti quando: 1) la gioventù cresce diseducata, immersa in modelli acustici americanoidi, volgari, squallidi e sempre più imbarbariti (prima sapientemente rigettati), nel disordine sociale indotto dalla stessa musica degenerata (chiamata da tutti impunemente arte); 2) i musicanti di tale compagine fanno carriera immeritata (e milioni a palate) con canzonette, pubblicità, massmedia e quant'altro... mentre i musicisti veri sono ridotti alla fame, solitamente scientemente ignorati nell'ipocrita e livoroso silenzio collettivo dei "conterranei"; 3) gli insegnanti di musica e le pseudo-scuole stesse, dato l'andazzo, si sono da tempo adeguati a "fare al ribasso" (da bravi mercenari corrotti), inducono a odiare il teatro e/o puntano tutto sulle prassi degenerate, sperimentali o folkloristiche; 4) gli pseudo-docenti degli ex-conservatori italiani, ideologizzati fino al midollo, cantanti e non, non insegnano alcuna tecnica "alla Del Monaco", né la consigliano o riconoscono artisti di tale calibro come i modelli più validi da imitare. Ma anzi, dall'alto della loro frustrata imperizia, li criticano come "esagerati" e, se possono, li passano sotto silenzio. E qualsiasi allievo che provi a mettere in pratica qualcosa da se (o con aiuti esterni) viene sistematicamente ostacolato da un ginepraio di rocambolesche situazioni frenanti ordite a fin di male; 5) le istituzioni scoraggiano ed emarginano i più preparati ma incoraggiano e sostengono ingiustamente la mediocritas, specialmente tastieristica... cioè la fetta maggioritaria degli aspiranti musicisti, sufficiente "popolari", funzionali alla lobby che detiene il controllo politico-amministrativo, comandabili a bacchetta e pronti a sostenere pubblicamente tesi e pseudo-tecniche sbagliate e false... E il tutto in nome di un pernicioso è falso luogo comune: l'idea romantica di musicista, fatto coincidere impropriamente con il pianista. 6) in una società che non ha il culto o il rispetto per lo spirito di sacrificio, ma persegue l'utile e il nuovo fine a se stessi, la moda (non a caso si parla di epoca mod-erna...) e che sdogana l'ingiustizia, la già grande fatica per il solista, specialmente se cantante, risulta più che triplicata; 7) il musicista deve diventare anche manager di sé stesso, deve ordinariamente smantellare quanto gli viene fornito di errato a "scuola di musica", deve vivere in una sterile dissonanza cognitiva, deve costruire tutto da zero e da sé, deve persino stare alle public relations ecc... Per cui le ore di studio diminuiscono; 8) senza educazione religiosa e comprensione metafisica della realtà (e dunque della priorità del sacro) non esiste Arte. Solo prassi che imbastardisce ed omologa tutto e tutti. Ripeto, non è mia intenzione difendere i cantanti attuali. Ma date le premesse circostanziali della società del bengodi industrializzato e senza Dio (per cui in assenza di sicuri è sani valori morali), certe insufficienze, c'è da aspettarsele... Confidiamo in un futuro migliore. LJC

He IS better than Corelli, vocally speaking. Corelli is slightly better than him, artistically speaking. I'll still place Del Monaco above Corelli, though. Voice comes first.

Please listen to the Tenors before them, for example the great " Pertile" those Tenors had more sound not only support the voice with power and the high notes are better, open taken from the middle voice so the sound stays impressive!!!!! I was and am still, a great admirer of Corelli and Monaco!!!!!!!!

Most interesting, since after the arrival of Corelli in the US we stopped thinking much about him. Too much of their repertoire overlapped for them to coexist in NY I imagine, although I read they were by no means enemies.
Yes, Corelli took over in the 1960s as MDM, past his prime, left the Met and the car accident was a big blow to his health. But, up until then he was truly phenomenal.

I believe he was truly a phenomenon even after his accident, but less so, only compared to himself.MDM left the Met in 1959. Corelli arrived at the Met in 1961 and officially retired in 1976 after a fine 25 year career. Corelli Zucker here on YT, where Corelli stated that the overlap of repertoire was never a concern. Tucker successfully shared the verismo roles with MDM and Corelli throughout a 30 year period at the Met. Tucker sang over 740 performances at the Met alone with only 2 cancellations.

I saw him in 1959 singing Otello, sensational dramatic voice at the time I saw him and far greater then his studio London label recording's in those days, with him you needed to see him live, and to some extent also with Tucker, who I saw at least 20 times, it seems bigger voices are better heard live, smaller ones can have an advantage with a studio microphone.

He did dedicate his life to the art form and stated at one time that'' nothing has forgiven me'', making the sacrifices of celibacy, protecting his vocal chords that were always sore after a performance, sleeping many hours before and after a performance, not speaking in full voice on or before the day of a performance, constantly being a student of technique, experimenting with the Del Monaco cocktail for his vocal chords and going to the sea shore and engaging in throat widening exercises. The voice I heard in 1962 was very clear sounding with a masculine tone and the ability to call on his voice for whatever was needed. He had to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Many people think that the option of turning the volume up on an amplifier to their liking is the same as heaing a tenor live. It's not
@@sugarbist thank you for some info here about him I didn't know about, such as the throat widening and the MDM cocktail which has never that I've seen been discussed, is it it in his book? True, these people flaming him in truth probably never saw him in house as I did in the late 1950's, and you did a couple of years later, there he did sound less steely then the London label recordings and of course larger then you'd expect, some singers, especially more Lyric ones do record better and have that advantage especially on studio records. Bjoerling, Bergonzi and Barry Morell come to mind, saw them all in house myself and the impression on their studio records also was very good, especially with Bjoerling and Pavarotti. Tucker was more in the direction of MDM, he had a Spinto voice with powerful high notes and he sang and sounded better live then on most of his studio recital records, Bjoerling live was warmer then in studio and though the voice was not large, it was adequate in his roles, no matter studio or live, he sang with perfection with great technique and especially in Lyric roles was at his best .

RONALD GOFF he was able to sing soft and he did...I wish people would stop spreading this myth. Just because often more dramatic instruments still sound relatively loud when they sing soft doesn’t mean they lack the ability to alter their registration. All voices work on the same principles. You can find many examples where Del Monaco sings lyrically. It just doesn’t sound the same as a lighter voice.

Great singing but it is noticeable in almost all of his (private) videos that he is staging his performances. Here he has somebody in a chair placed next to him who obviously should serve as a supporter with affirmative gestures and gazes full of awe. Other videos show him, oftentimes lip-synching, in a living room emulating the big stage presence equipped with gold chains/rings. Must have been quite a vain person.
Bit of a silly comment,del monaco was a superb tenor, these type of tv clips were very common back then,and the lip sync were often done as we have little footage of him singing as a younger man when his voice was at its best,so though not ideal,it is nice to see the man himself even if he is miming

Even at an old age he did it sitting in his living room while being filmed....he was a great tenor but that was way over the top and a clear hint to the great scope of vanity he must have had....

Ot takes a certain vanity to get up and walk the tightrope that of a dramatic tenor, the likes of MDM. The man in the chair is the same as the ‘Amen corner’ for African American expressive preachers who infuse the Word with dramatic intonation. Del Monaco had his amen corner, and if it helped him focus and give his best, so be it. It was marvelous and thrilling.

I fanatici di Del Monaco spesso stanno dimenticando che nel mondo della lirica esistevano dei Tenori con voci Meravigliose e come Artisti erano anni luce migliori dei tenori odierni .
Del Monaco era un Grandissimo Artista e basta .

mi chiedo una cosa, sono ormai anni che seguo CZcams e grazie a questo ho potuto vedere "come" canta mario del monaco, nel senso che vederlo dal vivo non ho mai avuto questo privilegio, solo mio padre…...mi rifaccio solo ai suoi racconti….entusiasmanti.

Most interesting, since after the arrival of Corelli in the US we stopped thinking much about him. Too much of their repertoire overlapped for them to coexist in NY I imagine, although I read they were by no means enemies.
Yes, Corelli took over in the 1960s as MDM, past his prime, left the Met and the car accident was a big blow to his health. But, up until then he was truly phenomenal.
@@rondargenio5457 The almost fatal car accident happened in Dec. 1963, where MDM's pelvis was broken, along with all his ribs, and his kidneys were damaged as well. As a consequence he remained on Kidney Dialysis until he passed. He officially retired in 1975 after a remarkable 35 year career. I believe he was truly a phenomenon even after his accident, but less so, only compared to himself.MDM left the Met in 1959. Corelli arrived at the Met in 1961 and officially retired in 1976 after a fine 25 year career. Corelli Zucker here on YT, where Corelli stated that the overlap of repertoire was never a concern. Tucker successfully shared the verismo roles with MDM and Corelli throughout a 30 year period at the Met. Tucker sang over 740 performances at the Met alone with only 2 cancellations.

I saw him in 1959 singing Otello, sensational dramatic voice at the time I saw him and far greater then his studio London label recording's in those days, with him you needed to see him live, and to some extent also with Tucker, who I saw at least 20 times, it seems bigger voices are better heard live, smaller ones can have an advantage with a studio microphone.

He did dedicate his life to the art form and stated at one time that'' nothing has forgiven me'', making the sacrifices of celibacy, protecting his vocal chords that were always sore after a performance, sleeping many hours before and after a performance, not speaking in full voice on or before the day of a performance, constantly being a student of technique, experimenting with the Del Monaco cocktail for his vocal chords and going to the sea shore and engaging in throat widening exercises. The voice I heard in 1962 was very clear sounding with a masculine tone and the ability to call on his voice for whatever was needed. He had to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Many people think that the option of turning the volume up on an amplifier to their liking is the same as heaing a tenor live. It's not
@@sugarbist thank you for some info here about him I didn't know about, such as the throat widening and the MDM cocktail which has never that I've seen been discussed, is it it in his book? True, these people flaming him in truth probably never saw him in house as I did in the late 1950's, and you did a couple of years later, there he did sound less steely then the London label recordings and of course larger then you'd expect, some singers, especially more Lyric ones do record better and have that advantage especially on studio records. Bjoerling, Bergonzi and Barry Morell come to mind, saw them all in house myself and the impression on their studio records also was very good, especially with Bjoerling and Pavarotti. Tucker was more in the direction of MDM, he had a Spinto voice with powerful high notes and he sang and sounded better live then on most of his studio recital records, Bjoerling live was warmer then in studio and though the voice was not large, it was adequate in his roles, no matter studio or live, he sang with perfection with great technique and especially in Lyric roles was at his best .

RONALD GOFF he was able to sing soft and he did...I wish people would stop spreading this myth. Just because often more dramatic instruments still sound relatively loud when they sing soft doesn’t mean they lack the ability to alter their registration. All voices work on the same principles. You can find many examples where Del Monaco sings lyrically. It just doesn’t sound the same as a lighter voice.

Great singing but it is noticeable in almost all of his (private) videos that he is staging his performances. Here he has somebody in a chair placed next to him who obviously should serve as a supporter with affirmative gestures and gazes full of awe. Other videos show him, oftentimes lip-synching, in a living room emulating the big stage presence equipped with gold chains/rings. Must have been quite a vain person.
Bit of a silly comment,del monaco was a superb tenor, these type of tv clips were very common back then,and the lip sync were often done as we have little footage of him singing as a younger man when his voice was at its best,so though not ideal,it is nice to see the man himself even if he is miming
@@amantedellopera1681 The comment is not silly but a true observation.Neither were these Tv clips common nor will you find other tenors of that time exceedingly lipsynching like he did. Even at an old age he did it sitting in his living room while being filmed....he was a great tenor but that was way over the top and a clear hint to the great scope of vanity he must have had....

These are correct observations and do not touch his standing towards colleagues who, according to your books, may have seen him the way you described. A well respected person can be vain or even very vain, can't they? The one does not exclude the other....
Ot takes a certain vanity to get up and walk the tightrope that of a dramatic tenor, the likes of MDM. The man in the chair is the same as the ‘Amen corner’ for African American expressive preachers who infuse the Word with dramatic intonation. Del Monaco had his amen corner, and if it helped him focus and give his best, so be it. It was marvelous and thrilling.

@@radames5855 una certa critica,ha sempre considerato Del Monaco un cantante d'opera normale,per sminuirlo...Celletti,Giudici,Celli,lo consideravano addirittura un urlatore,pur riconoscendogli grande voce e temperamento...di controparte,Abbiati,Mila,Confalonieri,Montale,Dal Fabbro ecc un tenore di prim'ordine che faceva stare a sedere ascoltandolo senza timore alcuno,e riconoscendogli una personalità scenica e vocale UNICA...Chi ha ragione???
