Fun fact: Ayrton Senna (I believe) promised his family that if he won the world karting title, he would quit racing and go work on the family farm. Lo and behold, he technically kept his promise and left one of the most impactful (if tragically short) careers in racing history.
At least that’s what my mum told me. If anyone wants to fact-check me, feel free to do so, but if you could provide a link, I would be grateful too.
I believe he finished second, Scott Speed won the championship and THEN he went to NASCAR.
Very nicely done. My father and I started racing karts in 1961 in Los Angeles, CA. Art Ingel's was a regular at our home track, Monza Speedway in Gardens and my father Wally Wallick drove Art's Caretta brand kart for ten years. We went to visit him at his home/shop in Echo Park, LA when I was 15. The shop was his 2 car garage. Each Caretta was made to order one at a time and had the level of quality you'd expect from a Indy car builder. Now, I am a 74 year old man living in the Thai jungle building an Experimental Kar with a full body, canopy, twin Yamaha 150cc, water cooled two stroke motorcycle engines and 6 speed gear boxes. I call it the GXP-75. That stands for Grit's Experimental Prototype @ 75 years old. Hope to have it completed by my birthday December 22, 2021. Look for it on CZcams early next year. Best wishes, Grit.
I've got 3 Carettas and can testify to the amazing build quality. Art's friend, John Hartman, picked up where Art left off after he sold Caretta jigs (became Caretta Works) and tubing in the late 60's. John carried on, updated and perfected Art's initial design. John was a Caretta factory driver in the early years and Art built many of the initial chassis' for John. Between Arts IndyCar background and Johns aviation background they developed and executed some of the best built, innovative designs of the era. You can't talk about karting in the US without Hartman's name coming up, they are widely considered the gold standard from the late 60's through the early 80's.
@@GeorgiaJunkman I remember John and his clutches. He used to come to Monza Raceway in Gardena, our home track. I remember seeing a fat stack of big bills popping out of his wallet when he opened it up to buy something. I didn't know him personally, but he was very successful both in racing and business. I believe he was the first guy at our track to run clutches. Everybody else ran direct drive.. didn't he have a son who drove?
@@ghraydon Yes, John's son was
Gary 'Jose' Hartman and he was a successful sprint & enduro driver probably best known for his 'blimp' exhaust pipes. John married Kathey Machala (a lot younger than John) and they went on a 20yr win streak. I think Kathey has 40+ national titles. I've heard tales that John would rent out Daytona Speedway for her to test and practice. She quit driving and karting after John passed. Last I heard she's big into fishing and is a nurse.
@@GeorgiaJunkman thanks for all that history. All that cash would come in handy renting out Daytona Speedway.
Louis Borelli was my neighbor in Echo Park in the 60s and 70s. My older step brother worked for him in the 1950s. His shop was a brick building on Echo Park Avenue.
this looks so smooth! great video! i always love the history of business and how it all worked out. always cool to see someone see an idea and go for it.

Using this video for a school project. Amazingly done and edited
Karting has got a lot faster. Parma, made in 1961 is .28 miles. Its modern counterpart, GoPro Motorplex, is .7 miles, or 3 times as long as Parma. The karts have gotten so much faster, that they need much bigger tracks.
I don't understand
Unfortunately the sophistication and cost of high end racing equipment pushes the average man out,
It pushes out the very people who created it, I liked it better when a father and son could afford to participate.
I drive on GoPro and it is insanely fast
Just came here from MotoMeerkat’s podcast (can’t believe you don’t like the Haas livery!)
Nice man! Very intresting!
Top notch quality video very underrated channel.
Thanks for the education!
Can you do more karting videos! Great videos!
Daytona Milton Keynes, as it is now, started out life as the James Hunt Race Center before (I believe) going bust. It was then aquired by Daytona. My son races in the Inkart series and it's a fantastic way for kids to get into karting for a reasonable cost.
Thanks for the info! :)
very well done!! I join the notification squad right away!! :D :D
Stuff like go karts have been around alot longer then most people give credit for. It's not till "California" does it that it's stated as starting.

A girl in shorts in a kart, that's nowhere in the video. Not so subtle clickbait. Noted
