    Racing lines: Follow the guys that work at the track when you can, and otherwise take standard lines, the difference between a regular and late apex in karting is less than you think so don't try to get fancy. Smoothness: Easy on the accelerator and brake, if you're sliding you're losing. Controlling brakes in karts with your left foot is the hardest thing to learn coming from a road car, and they are biased to the rear usually so you'll make a mess of the corner. Better to brake early than to lock up, so brake lightly. Balls: Go flat out during practice, full throttle from the get-go. Scare yourself. You need to know where you can get away with full throttle during a lap, otherwise you'll be lifting where you shouldn't when it counts. You want everyone else on track to be more nervous than you in high speed sections during qualifying and race. Finally, the most important skill is concentration. Every lap you need to know where you lost the most time, and be ready to improve it next time around. Your timing sheet should always show a consistent slope down and this takes discipline.

      I think I got more out of this comment than the video. I just finished and it was a very humbling experience coming from a racing background. I didn’t think I’d be super fast but I also didn’t think I’d do as bad as I did.
      If your sliding your loosing. (SO TRUE😆) I did a lot of that. How do you prevent it?

    • @-BuddyGuy
      @-BuddyGuy Před 2 lety +9

      @@lifeisgr82me I mentioned easy throttle and brake inputs but steering inputs also need to be smooth. Sliding can occur for a number of reasons. On corner entry braking can cause it. The way to resolve this is brake in a straight line and get off the brakes before you start steering. Then sliding can occur mid corner if you are carrying too much speed for the curve you're trying to take. So you have to slow down enough during this braking phase. Smoothly rotate the wheel to whatever position you can hold constant through the apex, and straighten up the steering gradually too. Then when you're getting back on the throttle don't smash it, ease into it as you exit the corner. Ultimately you can trail brake and get on the power early, using all the available track, but there isn't much point trying these techniques until you get the smoothness down. When you're smooth and the line is right you can then work on keeping the tires at the limit of grip with later braking and earlier accelerating. Then you'll be fast.

    I went karting (for real) for my first time in my life a few days ago. I do a lot of sim racing, but racing for real was just absolutely awesome! I can't think about anything else since then. I learned a lot, and even though my lap times weren't the best, I was really happy with my consistency and my racecraft. I constantly felt that my braking was awful, but I couldn't quite learn them fast enough, and the very short races weren't helping. Still, incredible fun!

    Protip: lean away from each corner, outside wheel sticks to the ground from your weight on it and you can gain grip and corner faster. Most karts are pretty hard to tip so not to worry usually
    UPDATE: I still reckon it works! but I’d like to add that the following may be considerations:
    1- if you lean too far and don’t have the mobility or strength you may injure your spine due to g forces involved.
    2- if instructors notice they might not condone the activity
    3- the hard plastic seats might bruise your back or sides a bit, consider asking for foam on the seat. Haven’t tried that though as I’d be too tall probably.
    -
    Basically don’t lean too far, test out varying leaning levels for your own limits, and maybe only do it a bit on your best laps for that extra second.

    Also, Jack is so very right....you learn to hate that tyre squeal sound with a passion.

  • @michaelfortier7726
    @michaelfortier7726 Před 2 lety +23

    For the most import trick, mentioned at the end, I believe the racing line is too obvious. The part where Jack talks about the engine, however, is interesting. Most people fail to realize that the acceleration of these karts is not linear. When rpms are too low, these karts make so little power that they barely accelerate. Some tracks with tricky hairpins make people lose so much time because they try to carry way too much speed into it. In some corners, you are better to sacrifice some entry speed for a better exit line where you can hammer the throttle earlier. I've found 2-3 tenths on a single corner at my local track by changing my approach and considering the engine in the kart.

    Tip no.0: lean your back on the seat on the opposite side in respect of the turn.
    Sort of explanation: karts don't have differencial, so you help by increasing the grip of the outer wheels with your weight.
    You can see in this video, they did it.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen Před 2 lety +4

    For the rental cars that I've driven, any sliding has always been the worst for lap times. I find I often can get a bit better lap times if push the seat a bit more forwards to avoid some understeering (more weight on the front wheels) which really destroys acceleration for low powered rentals. However, that makes the driving position a bit uncomfortable and if you push the weight too much forward your rear will be sliding too much. Also, if you need to brake, kick the brakes and release the pressure after that to avoid locking. The last thing you want is too careful initial breaking while you're still going straight because that's where you want the fastest deceleration.

    What you said about the engine is really true. I've raced gx160s, 200s, 240s, and 270s and there are real subtle differences between the engines. For example the 200s are pretty pokey at low revs but the 270s you want to conserve as much momentum as possible because when they bog down it takes ages to get up to speed again

    Weight definitely matter. Friend of mine weighs over 50 lbs more than me. I can out accelerate him out of every corner.
    Also, it's a myth that more weight gives you more "mid corner grip". Yes, you get more friction from the more weight, but you also need more force to maintain the same amount of acceleration. Mass gets canceled out in the equation.

    If it's your first time going karting I would recommend going to an indoor track because if you get in the rain its bad but it's even worse if the track is dry but had wet spots. I learnt the hard way, not on my first time but I bit a wet patch locked up and went on to the grass which was wet went into the wall and was chucked out of the kart. Thankfully i only got a sprained ankle

    well done and nicely explained!..
    just want to add..
    For beginners it is hard to "silde" into the corner without losing to much speed or slip totaly..instead slow down the kart enough that you can get of the breaks before steering and let the Kart Roll while steering...and try to accelerate smoothly form the Apex(middle of the corner) ....gas is not Digital so you can push the pedal slowly down! (it ís easyier to accelerate than to break !) Don´t push the gas and the breaks at the same time since you can´t control the gas smoothly (and you may dmg the clutch)
    in any case try to lean your self to the outside of the corner not the inside. A Kart is not a Motorbike!!

    add: Through corners your instinct let´s your body lean in the same direction. WRONG! Put as much wheight as possible on the outside wheel of the corner by leaning your body on the outside!! Got this and many other tips from a semi-pro who was driving Porsche-Cup and started with karting when he was young. I really thought before i met him there could be nothing done with my personal lap record which was about 52.30 Secs at our local indoor kart hall... After giving me advices and driving in front of me for 2 laps my record dropped to 50.40 Secs!! I was really amazed, really, it felt much slower to be honest, but it was very round and controlled. Even got the best lap of the month there one time. I´m really thankful for his pro tips. Yeah, sry... Who´s interested in this anyway so:

    When I kart im pretty competitive but I have the same main issue. All my fast turns are very dramatic and slidy. I cant seem to figure out how to get that smooth line Jack has. Generally Ill approach corners as fast as I can and brake hard, should I be lifting and braking less? Or just not coming at corners as fast and possible? For one of my local small tracks I average in the high 22-second range and the track leader gets a mid 20-second lap. I cant seem to break 21-seconds and i know its because of this
