We have a special upload Thursday! I watch Evil Dead (1981) so stay tuned tomorrow! Enjoy the day!
YES! So glad you watched this! One of my favorite movies of the last 20 years. When I first this, coming out of the theater, I felt the same way I did after I saw Blade Runner when it came out in 1982, I felt changed or altered by it. This movie is a masterpiece, it felt like a modern Kubrick film to me in a way. Loved that you chose to show the bit where she is looking at the piece of cake on her fork. That's so much of the movie in a nutshell, where we are seeing the world from her alien and alienated POV and something familiar and mundane like a piece of cake can suddenly look strange and alien to us as well. Just an incredible film.
So glad you really got into everything this movie was doing. I first saw this in an empty theater after smokin and it was transcendent. Never felt anything like it. Completely blown away.
Under The Skin is like if Stanley Kubrick directed Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers. I liked it.
Bro, the movie is boring as f**k. One of the worst movies ever.
@@mikimike That's cool, man. This is not a movie looking to make friends. At least you felt something. 🙂
I'm from Glasgow where most of this was filmed. It was quite funny at the time because stories were circulating around about people seeing Johansen wandering the streets and getting in and out of vans and nobody really believed them. The crew was apparently so small they were hard to spot even in the city centre scenes.
Interesting, thanks for sharing it.
Lmao imagine seeing Scarlet Johanson on the streets and no one believing you
I imagine if someone who lives in Glasgow said they saw Scarlett Johansson wandering down the street they'd be accused of having too much smack.
do you guys need subtitles to understand each other? cheers!
Before: “SciFi movie that features a fully naked Scarlett Johansson? Sweet!”
After: “WTF did I just watch?”
😂😂😂
One thing I love about Scarlett Johansson is that, even though she has made millions upon millions making high-budget movies, she's still taking up small interesting projects like this one.
The scene where she "unveils" her true self is one of my favourite scenes in movie history. There's just something in it that connects with me, as if you could step out of your body and look at yourself the way the world does, while the real you is just a distant, separate entity that masks itself to fit in. And yet as you look at it you can't recognise it. It's a "What am I, really? What if everyone is just like this?" moment. It makes me think of how age, gender and the husk you live in have very little to do with who you truly are.
Yeah it was gloriously haunting!
that last point is beaituful, i wish more people understood it
I think this could be what it’s like when you die, and shed the skin suit 🤷🏼♀️💯
The scene with the baby left alone on the beach haunts me to this day
Me too, in fact, I've always found it odd that I'm very rarely moved by misfortune befalling children in films, but for some reason, this one hit like a brick.
i feel like that part of the movie was what helped the main alien start to understand human pain and suffering and loss, and empathize with it.
Yes that was so disturbing.
I love this movie and its soundtrack, and the only thing keeping me from watching this movie again is this scene with the baby. I probably will watch this movie again at some point, but I'll need to be in just the right state of mind first.
Especially because its due to a stupid dog
This was one of my first A24 films and it completely blew my mind the first time I watched it. It's easily one of the best films of this decade.
A24 has been absolutely killing it!
The baby left on the beach is just too disturbing for me
12:15 that's the most yo "yo" i've ever heard lmao. shit had him bamboozled
also real love for the MF DOOM spot I didn't even notice that when I first saw this
Hahaha bruh I was STUMPED! Much love to the MF DOOM, respect!
Pretty sure I was at that gig.
I love how alien this film feels. There are some amazing visual scenes that stick with you, and the soundtrack stalks all the way through the film. If you havn't seen Annihilation by Alex Garland, its well worth a watch. Slow unfolding surreal horror with Natalie Portman :)
This film reminded me of Annihilation. Love that movie!
Under The Skin is the closest thing to 2001: A Space Oddesy that has ever been seen. It’s a strange, metaphorical look into the human psychique that is very interpretive.
My favorite part about this movie is that score. It’s haunting, and creepy while being beautiful at the same time. It is one of the most underrated scores because it has such an effect on you when watching the film.
Speaking of Scarlett johansson, she is really really great in Marriage Story.
Yeah, but that movie normalizes women being allowed to do whatever evil acts they want. Her character is so bad in the movie. They agreed to not get lawyers and ... ??? She did anyway? For no reason? With no explanation? Literally just: her friend suggested it. So she's a sheep at best. Him sleeping with someone else when she didn't fuck him for a year is no where near as bad as fuckin with her kids life or his life. She's (the character) factually a bad person and the film trying to make them appear equally bad just makes it a joke.
She's good in it, but it's a bad movie with a bad message.
@@RevJ7 jesus dude who hurt you? you completely missed the point of the movie, it seems like you're projecting your perspective or experience on it. the movie never claims that their acts are equal because it's not the point, the point is people make mistakes for various reasons and sometimes it doesn't matter who's to blame, cause blame doesn't help anyone (especially the kid )
Scarlett is underrated in terms of acting. Plus, I love her willingness to do weird and lesser known movies like this.
That film is incredible
@@RevJ7 * sniff sniff * That smell. That smelly smell. Smells like... Incels.
If you liked this you should check out "Annihilation"
awsome movie choice! sais alot of our society
The Color out of space is better! :D
@@jestemlegendom Color Out of Space is fantastic! I loved that movie.
That movie was so weird and very good correlation to this film. It was good and uncomfortable.
The director really captured an "alien" vibe. This is a great film.
I love how this movie is filmed. Like the way she stalks her prey and these weird and surreal scenes when she devours those men, it's almost nightmarish. And that soundtrack tho! Easily my favorite work of Mica Levi.
Wild movie.
The camera movement in this film was so damn good!
She doesn't devour the men....she lures them to the thing that devours them.
Under The Skin is one of the most difficult movies i've ever sat through, it's drawn out with long scenes, and some of the acting is rough around the edges...but it definitely holds up. The second time i watched it, it maintained it's unique atmosphere and tension.
Fun fact: i live in Glasgow, Scotland. Some of the scenes in the movie were filmed pretty close to where i live. I have no problem understanding the thick Glaswegian accent, as i know some people have to watch this film with subtitles to fully understand what's being said.
Under The Skin is well deserving of it's cult status, and the Special Effects are top tier.
I can guarantee you this : The Holy Mountain by Jodorowsky is the most off the wall fucking crazy film you will ever watch if you do watch it
Also "El Topo" from the same director is a masterpiece!
Have you ever seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I didn't really have respect for Jim Carrey as an actor until I watched that movie. It opens up all kind of philosophical questions as to the nature of regret, the struggle with knowledge vs pain, the helpless patterns we repeat, the idea of identity as a construct. Plus it's just an all-around engaging movie. I remember after watching it in college I just walked into the living room where my roommates were and just plopped down on the couch and stared at the wall.
I don't think I've ever clicked on a video so fast. I'm so happy to see you react to this, man. This movie left me in a weird daze for an entire week after I watched it. I feel like there are very few films (to my knowledge) that showcase humanity from an outsider's perspective, and this film did it so beautifully.
Happy to hear your excitement matched mine!
mica levi's score is fantastic.
jonathan glazer's short film released last year, 'The Fall' (7 minutes), is definitely worth checking out.
Oh word!!
His new short filmed during lockdown is great too
@@JamesVSCinema If you want to check out older Glazer, Birth (2004) is a misunderstood Kubrickian masterpiece.
Sexy Beast is Brit gangster fun in the sun.
I love how she begins as a dispassionate observer just consuming then gradually begins to absorb the subtlety of life around her. The compassion from a few strangers begins to sink in and disrupt her worldview. On my first viewing I wasn’t satisfied by the ending but the more I digest (no pun intended) this film, the more depth I find.
Fun fact: Some of the interactions with random people were real. They had a hidden camera to film reactions.
Edit:
(Nvmd you pointed it put lol)
😂😂🙏🏽
One of my favorite movies of the past decade. The use of music and sound is so effective. This movie felt truly ALIEN and was deeply disturbing in parts, but also hypnotic.
A little off topic but if you liked the stylized vision of Mandy. You should watch The Love Witch. The writer/director did everything. She did the costumes, sets, just everything. Highly impressive.
I love the Love Witch! No one ever mentions it and it definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Such a quirky, highly stylized, highly original, little gem of a film.❤
I agree, The Love Witch is a real treasure.
Colin Stetson composed the music for Hereditary too, if I’m not mistaken. Another very effective soundtrack that will send chills up your spine and make you feel sick.
"I love how that was done. But my goodness. That was terrifying."
There's this interesting contrast between how you view it just to view it and how you analyze it as if you're the one who made it.
You need to do a video on, "John carpenters, "The thing".
Oh I’ve seen that but would love to revisit!!
I would love for you to do a reaction to Charlie Kaufman's "I'm Thinkinng of Ending Things" on Netflix. It's one of those films that are really off putting and uncomfortable at times, but super unique!
The visual around 12:07 remains to this day the absolute most spine-grippingly disturbing and terrifying thing I have ever seen committed to film.
the sequences in this movie that take place in "the void" are absolutely nightmarish.
seriously channeling some bad-dream type of energy. brilliantly shot though.
When the body deflates in the void and makes a loud pop!!
Scared Me
This is my go to recommendation for anyone asking for Loveraftian horror. It captures that vibe of getting a glimpse at the monsters that hunt us at the edge of reality.
The filming definitely has an almost a snuff film vibe. Like you're watching something you're not supposed to. And that you're about to see something disturbing.
They were not lying!
This movie is an art house indie horror film disguised as an erotic slow-burn thriller. She's basically an alien succubus who lures men to her lair in order to do...whatever it is she does with them. All your observations from the beginning were spot-on, which I guess means the movie does a great job at setting itself up. I believe the cake sequence suggests that she's not accustomed to human food. I forgot just how GOOD this film is. For some reason, my mind always lumps this one together in the "same space" as Ex Machina. Another good one to watch if you haven't seen it already.
The movies you choose to react to are always amazing ones lol
Hahaha gotta thank the community!
"I don't know what he's saying, but I just understand that he's trying to spit game"
Ha, let me pause the video to subscribe right quick...
Lmaoooo ay you know what’s up. Much love
Watched this recently and it was a true spectacle, never seen anything like it. The visual of the guy’s skin floating in the blackness was fucking stunning
I just rewatched this the other day and here you are with a reaction to it, couldn't have been better timed!
Out here reading minds!
I'm so glad you liked this. It's one of the braver choices for a reaction. Nice one man! It's as though they took the direct approach by giving you realism to root inexplicable, alien experiences, and space to let your mind tick over. Gave me a dark, shadowy fringe feeling of The Man Who Fell To Earth.
love this film. the scene on the beach, espeically with the baby crying, is one of the most disturbing things i've seen in a film though.
mesmerising indeed, all the way through! That practical skin peel scene is amazing!
Yea, and that MF DOOM poster too!
MF DOOM!! Ayyy you know what’s up!
You bet!
The producer had a hidden camera, and Scarlett Johannson (SP ?) actually picked up men in the van, it was not until she dropped them off, they were told that they were being filmed for a movie, and if they would like to continue with the filming, for the follow up scenes where she "Consumes" them.
Can you imagine how disappointed you would be to realise you're not going to be hooking up with SJ
The final scenes were filmed where I grew up as a kid. Also I love this movie. Some of the most subtlety ever. It conveys a wholes story and character arc through almost no dialogue or exposition. All visuals and interpretations. Terrific.
The scene where the father can't reach his son in the surf hit me like a train. Idk why exactly, but it freaked the hell outta me
he was trying to save his wife... the dog went in too far, the wife tried to save the dog, the husband tried to save his wife, the surfer tried to save the husband and the baby was left alone on the beach
@@billymuellerTikTok gotcha. Haven’t seen it in 10 years
@@MothsInALampshade it freaked the hell out of me too
I was so thrilled my recommendation got picked! No one really talks about this film or has reacted to is so this was awesome to see! The score was so creepy, but it just really clicked with me. Thanks for all you do, James!
Aw anytime!! Thank you for showing so much love!
You’re a great reader of film. Thanks for conversing with us. Keep it up! For the love of movies! ✌️
Always Drew! You guys rock 🙏🏽
When the guys Body "Pops" in the void I jumped out of my chair!!
I was one of the people who recommended this one around the time you were watching Shutter Island. I was a bit disappointed when you replied that you had already seen it. So yeah happily surprised to see this reaction come by. Your first thoughts were very on point.
i love this film and enjoyed every bit of your review! Thank you so much for your work
The excitement is real with this one. One of the most magnificent soundtracks ever. And the story? Boy... Amazing
The novel this film is based on is so good. It's very literal and you're aware of what's happening, who's who, etc.
This movie is more of the director riffing on the book's themes more than anything.
I do hope we get a more faithful adaptation of the novel down the road.
Loving your reactions as always
Keep it up with the good work man!
Appreciate your comments!! Thank you!
Filmed in my locality. Theres a scene when she falls in the street and peopl step in to help. She also drove around Glasgow picking up random guys in that van who didnt know they were being fillmed, at least one is in the movie 6:10 . Theres also a scene she stumbles in the street and locals step in to help, again unaware of being filmed.
One of my all time favorites! Excited you’re checking it out!
Great pick! Love Jonathan Glazer's work, especially Birth. Each film is so unique and memorable. Mica Levi's score is perfection. Oscar worthy stuff.
I’m happy this landed in my recommendations as well Lara!
Birth is incredible, such an underrated film
@@thegentleassassin I adore that film. That long close-up shot, Desplat's score, the use of color, it's heaven.
I watched this 2 days ago. I googled movies about aliens and this was the 3rd recommended movie so I gave it a chance and what a experience. I did not know what was going on until like 3/4 of the movie then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Incredible movie 🍿
Haha that was me commenting on Donnie Darko that some people were not actors. Here's another fun fact. The man with the physical deformity is not wearing prosthetics. He has rare genetic disease. He has a twin brother who does not have the same physical effects but suffers memory loss.
My favorite scene is the beach scene. From her perspective, she sees a human being put their life in danger for an other species (a dog in this case), then we see another human being put their life in danger trying to save him (this time its the father), finally, a complete stranger puts his life in danger to save one of them. You have to constantly ask yourself, "what is she thinking when she has these experiences". This is true Sci-Fi...and it asks the question "What is it to be human?".
I love a lot of aspects of this movie, but the soundtrack is one of a kind. I immediately became a fan of Mica Levi. I was so happy when she was nominated for her soundtrack on Jackie. Even with this "normal" picture she was able to convey so much personality.
Great reaction James always love your content
I am glad that you noticed the camera perspective shifted from her to us as she gained humanity. We are now watching her experience what we experience and her eventual role reversal from hunter to being the hunted.
james, i always enjoy your videos and will for the forseeable future! Keep the good vibes up! I will send you some energy from Germany in order for you to survive the next weeks. Have A GREAT day my brother!
Thank you so much for the love brother, much love as always fam!!
I consider this film a sci-fi masterpiece! Especially on my second viewing. Amazing.
I fucking wish I could watch this film for the first time again
The final shot of the camera facing the sky, snow falling on the lens and breaking the fourth wall just struck me as confronting us, WE are under the skin. Under the films skin, living within it as an invasive entity until it concludes.
Here we go! Only watched this ones and very happy to enjoyed it. Probably never going to watch it again tough.
Hahaha sweet!!
That guy getting drained in the pool at 12:10 is so crazy. I remember it all these years later. Even the sound.
Thanks for your impressions James. I really loved Under the Skin - I put it up there alongside 2001. Both are brilliant science fiction movies because there's so much about them that is curious and unknowable. The ideas are truly deep. Also love the style of cold detachment that both Glazer and Kubrick employ. So skilful and visionary. And Mica Levi's score. Genius! James, if you liked the music in this I would highly recommend seeing Monos.
Such an underrated gem. Glad you liked it.
aaaa this movie has been in my watchlist for the longest time, i love the soundtrack. i need to stop being lazy and just watch it 😹 anyways, great video as always James, you're awesome
Hahaha thank you so much Vic! It was a crazy experience I’ll you that 😂
did you watch it yet? its truly one of the best films to be ever made 😌
This movie absolutely challenged the way I think and view on society and that’s always a good movie, regardless or how unnerving or uncomfortable it may be. It was an A+ for me.
Nice editing, you showed the story really well. I saw this film on TV a few years back and fell in love with it, though I really didn't expect too. Have you seen 'Annihilation' on Netflix? That's another good cosmic horror.
Such an intriguing and unique film. Glad to see you enjoyed it too
Now it seems like you are just reacting to all of my favorite movies lmao. Another one of my favorites! One of the many home runs from A24.
One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard also.
Hahaha A24 has just been on a roll!
Beautifully made movie. One of my favorite scores ever. Mica Levi is so talented
Another masterpiece of a film. The soundtrack is especially haunting. You should definitely react to Manchester by the Sea, one of the best films I've ever seen.
@@plk5520 It deserves so much more man!!
Mica Levi wrote the score. She’s one of the most interesting younger musicians working today. You might be interested in checking out a few of her other scores. Her most recent one was for a Columbian film called “Monos”. It’s really good. She also did the score for “Jackie” and I believe she was nominated for an Oscar for that one.
She also fronts a band called Micachu and the Shapes (then called Micachu, and now I believe they are called Good Sad Happy Bad, they keep changing their name).
Another great video, love the films you’ve been checking. Fucking love this film!
This movie is so damn different. Loved it.
The vibe reminded me of The Thing.
The music and sound make this film.
The black ant at the beginning is a symbol for what she is and what the motorcycle men are, they are aliens hunting humans for food.
The director said "if you're going to make an alien film, then keep it alien" basically keep it strange as if you were the alien trying to figure things out.
Some of it filmed in my hometown of Arbroath, Scotland
Looks beautiful there to be fair
So happy to see you reacted to this. This is probably one of my Top 5 movies, I really love it a lot. So eerie, Scarlett Johansson's performance is fantastic and I really dig the score. Also love Colin Stetson!
Colin is a legend!
We are in Lockdown again here in Israel. I've been looking forward to your videos! It helps that your English is spoken with thoughtful deliberation. I really enjoy your thoughts and finding out about movies I haven't seen. Thank you!
That’s really good to hear!! Thank you my friend! Be safe brother!
Great video , great film. BTW the cake is called black forest gateaux . Very nice
I haven't watched the whole reaction yet but alot of this movie was shot in a different country and with like handheld cameras like the parts when she's driving around and talking to men. Those random men on the street that she talks to aren't actors it's just her improvising and having real conversation with them. They didn't know who like scarlett Johansson was at all. Its interesting to read about how alot of it was filmed.
I saw this scene 12:09 high as fuck in the theatre alone when it came out, and when this happened, it shocked me in a way no movie has ever done. It was genuinely the scariest thing I’d ever seen and have seen since
I ADORE this movie. This is for sure only for people who can really appreciate artistic films. Definitely not for your casual moviegoer.
Seeing you process some of the disturbing scenes honestly helped me do the same.
Mica Levi, one of the most exciting musical artists alive right now I think. Should also watch Monos
I absolutely love this movie, I have the poster in my room and I have the soundtrack, I remember when I saw it in the theater it was just my sister and I in the audience in a tiny indie movie theater
Yeah the artwork by the way for this film is stellar!
When I saw the thumbnail I thought, "Oh THIS will be a good one!"... but then I realized I have to rewatch it along with you hah. This film messed/stuck with me for a few weeks.
Lmao funniest video yet, keep up the good work
Hahaha thanks Derek!
From the way it was shot to the amazing and eerie soundtrack this film was amazing. I remember watching it and the scene where the skin crumpled scared tf outta me. Awesome reaction. Love when reactors have an open mind about strange movies. Also...shit if scarlett Johansson asked me if I wanted to get in her van....I would😂😂...well not anymore because of this movie!
Knowing me...I’d still go into the van! 😂
@@JamesVSCinema 😂😂😂
That blue sequence with the man "deflating" is probably one of the most unsettling horror sequences I've seen. It's not even a full jump scare, it just like triggers the part in your brain that goes "this is unnatural, I don't like it. I really don't like it".
Your insight and reaction to films is interesting and all but you're reaction at 12:11 has to be one of the best things on the channel. Haha, I seen a mans brain pop in realtime
Lmfaooo! I just was NOT READY
PS. Speaking of MARVELous actors who took the lead role in ominous interesting indie films (right after they played in Avengers1) check out Tom Hiddleston as the romantic vampire in Jarmisch's Only Lovers Left Alive (2013).
Having read the book, it made sense - changes were made of course adapting it, but still was faithful to the source material. In the film she has no name, in the book she's named Isserley.
It's one of those with sometimes extreme reactions. I liked it, some of it looked like a Pink Floyd cover.
Scarlett is amazing, excellent performance.
Junji Ito rules man!
And Evil Dead will be an inspiration for sure. That whole trilogy is creative as fuck.
Have a great day man!
Appreciate you always brotha!! Happy to see you! Hope you’re well homie!
not sure if someone explained or maybe you guessed by now lol, but that silent void scene, he got harvested from the inside with only an empty husk of his flesh left behind, the following shots are definitely a “meat factory” haha, where their meat is being processed
I really dig this film. Been meaning to rewatch this. Another A24 gem. Glad you reacted to this. I do agree with you on the long takes. Next A24 film has to be Waves, man.
Fun Fact/ Trivia
The men lured into the van by Scarlett Johansson's character were not actors. Jonathan Glazer had hidden cameras installed in the van and only informed the men afterwards that they were in a movie.
