The woman in the beginning wasn’t a human victim, she was an alien hunter that’d failed their mission by letting human emotion in. Also, I don’t think she was dead, more so paralyzed by sadness after letting emotion in (hence the tear). Scarlet is then set to replace her but ultimately ends up meeting the same fate by becoming overcome with emotion. The biker is her handler, he regularly inspects her to check for this emotion.
Yes. Its almost as if they know that it will eventually happen. The alien/women are there to harvest men for meat, but they are also being treated as nothing more than disposable/livestock themselves.

I have a feeling that Jordan Peele got the idea for " the sunken place" from this movie i could be wrong but seems right on point
Oh, that's really an interesting thought, and not to take anything away from Peele, either. I thought Get Out was one of the best horror films of recent years.
The way that people were digested by the alien in Peele's Nope is also similar to the "processing" of her victims in the dark liquid in this movie
I'm a new father of a child not much older than the one left on that beach in this film, I gotta admit, that sequence really shook me and it stayed with me for days, and even troubled my sleep for the first night. I don't know that it would have impacted me the same way had I not been a father, it made me come face to face with a fear I didn't know I had. To me it was the most horrifying moment of the film.

It might be the most disturbing scene I can think of. I had a toddler at the time and felt physically ill. At the same time, the intensity was raw, stripped of sentimentality. It might be my favorite film.
I've never had children, but that is still the creepiest, most disturbing scene I have seen in any movie! The matter of fact way it was portrayed was chilling.
It was tough to watch
The first "dead woman" as you call her is not human. Is the previous alien Laura is replacing. Apparently, she also failed by develipong empathy (simbolozed by her tear).

Only the truly introspective, intellectual individuals appreciate movies like this. This was an awesome movie, and was grossly unappreciated.
Classic less is more. Finally watched it on Blu-ray today... and for the 1st time I got something very quickly; IF you have the subtitles on, you wont get the beginning, were she learn "proper English". On the bus, the driver speaks with such an accent that Scarlett doesnt understand anything. It's an interesting choice, if I had removed the subtitles, I would feel just as alien as she is. It's a brilliant movie, where the director have no intention to explain everything. She is made as a siren, and the movie can be a symbol for the male nature. Or not. Who knows? I really love it never explain what happens to the men, and the ending is crystal clear, if you follow what happens when Scarlett arrives. Who was the biker? Her boss? Ah, who cares. Probably Scarletts best performance, just body language
Great video! I think you missed a step in the rescue scene. The wetsuit guy was saving the husband/father who was saving the wife/mother who was saving the family dog. All family drown leaving their baby on the beach. Wetsuit guy gets taken by alien.

Thank you this was literally the most confusing part of the movie for me I didn’t realize who the baby was I guess I missed the dog and the mother. Should probably rewatch .
The fact they shot much of it around Glasgow, Scotland (Depressing looking place and a hell hole) just ads to its unerving atmosphere.

I thought the darkness in the scenes where the victims were encaptured also embodied how the victims went blind for any dangers or red flags in their pursuit of physical affection.

I read in some places the woman who’s clothes are taken off in the beginning was a previous alien automaton(I personally have a theory that the motorcycle dudes are actual aliens and scarjo’s character was manufactured but still alien to humans) that failed. That she experienced humanity the same way before being shut down or whatever. And the reason the motorcycle dude keeps looking into scarjo’s eyes is to check her “experience through perception” because the last one failed.
Yes the motorcyclist is her alien overseer. In the book the female alien has to report to him. Although the book is very different and its set on a farm with him being disguised as a farmer.
Good Review!! The scene where the guy gets his soul sucked out of him suddenly in the void made me jump out of my seat!

Ive watched several reviews on this movie and yours is the only one that re-examines who the woman at the beginning is and why she's there to begin with. Is she an abductee? Is she one of them? If so, is she being replaced? Is she crying and why is that important? Good job, man!
Pretty sure she's just the previous clone/alien and has succumbed to developing human emotions and tried to escape and was killed. Scarlett is her replacement which is why he examines her at several points checking for any signs of her developing empathy.

The sound design is especially important. If you note even at the beginning, the unfastenin of the belt buckle while taking the clothes of the woman on the ground, to the muffled and stifled sounds within the van. The van is her UFO she abducts men into, and siren-calls them into utter doom. I can’t and won’t explain it as well as another old review of this movie did, not my own thoughts, but it makes so much more sense.
It does it much more justice watching these videos after a fresh watch of a film.

For some reason this movie reminded me of Melancholy by Lars von Trier. I agree 100% about emotional pressure on women and high beauty standards. And this women's greatest fear of aging and not being able to meet these high standards... 😢
This was one of the freakiest movies I’ve seen especially since Scarlets Johansson seemed so surreal in this role! Watched it for the third time last night, bought the blueray. Starts off not happy, and then gets less happier.
I think you over analysed it at the end, its not about how women are objectfied/treated based on beauty, more just how life is brutal and eventually you can't escape that. In the book it says that these alien women are part of a lower class on a planet where there is a huge gap between rich and poor, and they volunteer to come to earth believing its a way to escape their situation. As its sold as being a good opportunity or alternative to a life of working low paid menial/manual tasks.
but its not the book. its the movie which is clearly about women.

The woman in the begining could be an alien hunter that has either gone rogue, as Johansson's character OR been attacked (as was Johansson). I offer the second idea since her body is found by the side of the road off an embankment. Maybe she ran off (as Johansson when abandoning her van), or she was tossed out of a car, attacked, and left to die. Does it matter? In the end, not really. She still arrives to the same realization of feeling (tears) as Johansson's character.

Dang it! I watched this Friday night and was so confused I hated it. After watching your video analysis, I now think it is a brilliant movie and will watch it again. I do think it is amazing that I could see this young lady naked and not see it as purely gratuitous movie sexuality like so many other series or movies. I had no idea this is the same actress that plays a super hero in Marvel movies. Thank you for this work! Great job!

I just watch the entire movie but did not really enjoy it but finished it to give it a chance to persuade me otherwise. The disturbing scene with the couple at the beach, pissed me off and sadden me, it was quite disturbing, because they had an infant there and they both die and so does the baby because the mother tried to save the dog. The newscast lets you know that the tide ended up taking the baby also because it was missing, and they only found was the dad's body. That baby was dependent on it parents for it care in an isolated area and safety and to make good decisions. Mom should not have tried to save dog and dad (it sad to say) should not have gone into water to save mom the water was too rough.
Saw some in the comment read the book and that the only way someone could make hide and tail of this movie. At first, I thought she was getting them for their skin but when she was still taking the disfigure guy, I was like are they going to use him for parts, since she focused on his hands. Thanks for reading the Google explanation it wraps it up really well that she just processing meat for consumption. but in the comments, I did find some interesting information. It did not change my mind about not liking it.
One thing was curious for me why did the aliens really care if the person did not live with someone or have family, wouldn't they just be missing? And the guy that took her in did not look for her nor inquire why she did not have a vagina, he just hit a wall?
I would love to claim my time back that it took to watch the movie.

Loved the movie, totally F'd up...
She is Saturn and motorcyclist is Jupiter.
Those who love this film are quick to say, as if saying this means it is inconsequential... but of course we are not told what is going on.... so great that we must use our imaginatuin to fill in all the blanks ect. ect. Seinfeld had touted his show was... About nothing...and Under The Skin mimics that Seinfeld credo. Two hours about nothing, Except for all those using their imagination to come up with...you guessed it...everything. A surefire example of the "you just didn't understand it" crowd.
No one ever mentions the baby seated in her back seat after she leaves the beach.

I don’t think your take on “societal pressure and female beauty” has anything to do with the overarching meaning of the film. And that is what it means to be human, not just the female sex of humanity.
A good analysis. On unintellectual level I'm in complete accord with it. But the film left me cold. I really disliked it. Its vision was just too bleak for me.
Strange movie but scarlett is a knockout and scotland is a depressing country.
