Once again, you are my 'go to' person post seeing a film which impacts me but which I need to more fully understand. Your research is essential to a better understanding of the movie. Apart from the root of the plot, you helped me better understand why particular elements of the movie were so powerful. Example: The odd interactions of this 'perfect' family. One example (which I do not think you focused upon) was the clear/routine manner in which the couple had sexual interaction. Once the first scene of this element occurred, I recognized that all interactions between family members should be viewed from a more symbolic perspective.

Great review. I noticed that when Stephen goes to Martin’s house the film they are watching is Groundhog Day. A big part of Groundhog Day is the protagonist having a god complex.

Another thing I noticed is the camera shots would slowly creep towards the characters quite a bit and often times it was so slow, that it was almost unnoticeable. In my opinion that could symbolize not only fate slowly creeping in, but also the slow creep of the sickness. Thanks for the video. You did a good job my friend.
The movie was a bit disturbing to watch, mainly with the creepy daughter and robotic dialogue, but still it was different from other movies. Loved you analysis.
I think the mother trying to convince her husband to kill one of the kids since she can have another kid is the most DISGUSTING part of this movie. No one else seems to care, but ugh. People need to do better. Especially when they choose to have children. Children have no fucking choice.

@@kepecosI think it was to show how despite her exterior she wasn’t as loving or dedicated mother as she appeared. But then again she seemed so I’m not sure, robotic? It’s like she was always on top of things and keeping her husbands reputation and image.

@@kepecos disturbing media is good as long as there is some kind of enticing story. I was really hoping for an explanation and the best explanation I have found online is in the world they live in. You need to balance out the scales, if something gets taken then you need to give equal pay. It seems like it’s not to be taken literally but as a metaphor which I have the most trouble with
Adding to the point at 2:50; Steven tries to pay of his guilt by spending money, something he has a lot of and Martin lacks. This 'costs' Steven nearly nothing. In the end he has to pay what's most dear to him; his own ego. A classic plotline, executed really well. Great video, thanks!

Amazing analysis! I thought I'd put my two cents in and would love some discussion too!
I haven't seen this mentioned before but after Anna cleans up Martin's wounds she kisses his feet, much like how Mary Magdalene did to Jesus. I think this was a really powerful act. I also noticed favouritism amongst the children. Anna scolded one child for slouching at the dinner table but a shot of the other doing the same was shown (I forgot who was scolded and who wasn't). Kim is also very similar to her mother in the way they behave toward Martin and Steven. They both try to appease Martin (Anna kisses his feet, Kim offers to free him) they also try to appease Steven (Anna lies naked on the bed for him after their fight, Kim's offers herself up to die as Steven cleans her wounds). Another major addition to the God Complex idea that Steven has is that not only does he have a fetish for r-wording unconscious people (Anna acting as if she is under general anaesthetic, touching his own father as he is asleep) his closest friend at the hospital is an ANAESTHESIOLOGIST. Made me think he was probably enacting these fantasies on patients and not merely just operating on them while inebriated. I also thought for the beginning part of the movie that Martin was his secret son and that his mother was a patient of Steven's and he kept in contact due to his guilt. That might have just been me though idk.

That was so well explained. I think the real beauty of highly symbolic films is that everyone can resonate with different aspects and themes based on their own experiences.
For me, the notions of the patriarchy accepting its responsibilities and dealing with consequences really echoed throughout this film. None of the adult men (patriarchs) takes responsibility for their mistakes/ ineffectuality. They're concerned with their own ego and with appearing faultless. But they're failing against the younger generations who are deeply resentful towards them. If they don't pay for their mistakes, they'll loose everything,
Also, the God/ Jesus symbolism is interesting - Bob is the "son" who dies for our sins - or for his father's sins in this case. Martin of course also has Jesus-like qualities - he has powers to heal, his feet get kissed as he bleeds and suffers, he's bearing the cross of his grief. Steven to me isn't God - he's Pontius Pilate, attempting to wash his hands from the responsibility.
Kid has Godlike powers yey as shocked how people all eat spaghetti?
The spaghetti scene was SOOO powerful to me. I could go on for days about the hidden layers of just that scene. This is one of my favorite hidden gems to recommend to people when they ask for a "good" movie.
The relationship that we have with mundane routines and objects because of some sort of imaginary value that we've placed on it was on full display in this very scene. Then to have him state how meaningless in the grand sceme of things (but also VERY important individually) it all actually is, was heartbreaking. It's like stuff is only as meaningful or important as you, personally, make it.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. And Barry Keoghan is the perfect actor to sell such a scene inhabiting such a well-written character. It’s super captivating

Watched this movie and was thirsty for a discussion, and your video quenched that thirst a bit:) I also thought the spaghetti thing could be looked at in curious parallel to other two scenes: 1) when Martin sees the same watch that Steven gave him on the other doctor’s hand, realizing that it wasn’t a unique and special thing that he might have wanted to believe it was (“slighting the Gods”) and 2) when Martin visits Steven’s family and observes Steven around them, realizing that again Steven’s treatment of Martin wasn’t unique and special.

This might be a weird analogy but it always reminds me of an alligator slowly swimming towards its prey, and you can’t steer your attention away from it. That was the best breakdown. I watched this movie and was a little confused at the ending. You made it all make sense in less than 10 minutes. I subscribed. I watched an other review all they did was recap the movie
This Analysis absolutely saved this movie for me. I just finished watching this movie with my family and we all found it to be bizarre and displeasing. I have this odd condition where at awkward points in a film I often cringe to the point of literally averting my eyes cause I cannot stand the second-hand embarrassment it gives me, yet this movie was almost entirely awkward, from the dialogue to the character interactions etc..., yet I never cringed once, it was like watching a car crash I just couldn't look away. By around the last third of the movie, I had basically checked out and by the end I decided that I didn't know how to feel about the movie as I didn't seem to understand it much. I think all the symbolism and themes passed me by because I was too hung up on the weirdness of it all. I immediately went looking to youtube to find someone to rationalize it for me. After watching your video I have a new perspective on the movie and can understand that it is in fact a masterwork of film, however, that does not change my overarching opinion that the movie is unpleasant. Maybe I will rewatch it someday and keep the context of this video in mind, and maybe that will allow me to see it in a better light, for now congratulations on an incredible analysis. I also have some questions about your opinions on some other events in the movie and what their symbolism could be. Like how Kim did the same thing for Martin that Anna does for Steven, why did she do that, and why did Martin refuse. Though I think that goes back to the King vs. God argument as many who first meet and become infatuated with God want to exonerate him as a King, but in the end a God is not the same as a King. There are also a lot of incestuous themes that play certain roles, like Steven describing the figure of his mom and taking care of her and sleeping with her despite being much too old for that, as well as Steven's admission about doing that to his own dad. To be honest those two moments especially turned me off to the movie and I wanted to know what you thought of the possible symbolism of them.

Honestly I don't actually liked this movie, thought it was too strange and even though I perceived this as intentional, yet it didn't make it a better movie for me, still the strangeness didn't make the movie more tense or enjoyable in any way possible, but I loved your analysis, never thought the same thoughts you did, really liked your point of view, still not a fun watch, I understand it's a great movie, had that as fact even before your video, but remain not liking it that much, but what you said made me a bit more found of the movie, great analysis, deeper than I thought the movie was, really liked what you said.

Omg, yes! That's one of the many details about this movie that make it so uncomfortable and strange.
Assuming that is what youre supposed to garner from that moment, I think one could argue there is a very very minor theme of incest in this movie, with that story about Stephen jacking off his dad [or step dad?] while he slept

I started watching it and finished it the next day. I was freaked out with confusion like where is the voodoo scene, and when I finished the ending the next day I have a more metaphorical understanding of the movie. Unknown to me if it’s my personal interpretation or intentional. Martin to me represents Steve younger self and/or ego. That have created a seminal y prosperous life. However watching the movie taking martins as Steven’s Internal voice is a way to explain despicable behavior towards others specially his family. Completely unattached. Even one of the first scenes of the couple having intercourse as she asked what he prefers, almost what turns him on is a lifeless body that lacks intimacy. The entire movie lacks intimacy. The movie plays, and I understood characters voice as almost indicators of what their life would be in the future. This bringing up of the kids of a picture perfect life, or the judgement tone of Anna and Steven leaving the doccon (with moral superiority and judgement) would in my mind interpret as the children growing up and being emotionally useless- no being able to use their legs. Comparing watches with the other doctor, and he buying the watch on impulse for his younger self aka Martin. When alicia licks his hands is disturbing for him to accept the admiration that he craves. Bob would have committed suicide when older with this upbringing that’s why he dies and Kim just becomes a females version of Steven/Martin. This movie is brilliant is so shallow but so much depth in the themes. When Kim screams at Martin from the floor to try harder, to me symbolized her in a relationship with someone not being fulfilled because she lacks the tools of self emotional fulfillment (on the floor) yelling at her partner “try harder!”. I could watch this movie again and the meaning would change depending on my mood. Lol. Great movie.

Great analysis! You touched on some aspects of the film that were pure lightbulb moments for me, like the reason behind the family's robotic, banal interactions, beyond it being the directors "style" which I never quite bought. There are other scenes you didn't touch on, like the Mary Magdeline-esque scene when Anna kisses Martin's bloody feet, or when Martin seems to be trying to bargain with Steven to be a replacement father to him as he tries to fix Steven up with his mom. On the other hand, I sometimes think we analyze the meanings of these scenarios too deeply, and yet here I am!😂💪👍🔥

I recently watched Fargo season 5, and then this movie for the first time. This movie reminds me of the character Ole Munch (Oola Moonk) from Fargo season 5. A pound of flesh for a pound of flesh. Also, I noticed Kim was eating her french fries first in the final scene. Martin had said in an earlier scene that he always saves his fries for last because he likes them so much. I didn't see him biting his arm as him mocking justice, but better ham-fistededly explaining the concept of "an eye for an eye". Martin obviously has a very black and white view of justice considering how he chooses to punish Steven. The lack of nuance, while reflective of the story it draws inspiration from, is kind of dumb on a human, multifaceted level where many decisions are often grey. He is a petty, childish, and vengeful God that becomes irate as soon as he is no longer being given trinkets and submission.

Did anyone think the daughter was being / had been sexually abused by one of her parents? When she imitated her mother's 'pose' in bed, and the almost jealous looks her mother gives her... something didn't feel right about that.
