Consider the characters shiftier than a six-speed gearbox we still can't believe betrayed you and BEWARE SPOILERS from Life is Strange, Metro Last Light, Game of Thrones, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Dark Souls and (the original) Tomb Raider.

    7 Totally Trustworthy Characters Who Definitely Won't Betray Us
    • 7 Totally Trustworthy ...
    It's our own fault for trusting people such as Mass Effect's "Illusive Man", who advertised his deceptive nature in his very name. The way he wears freaky cyber contact lenses and leads a paramilitary group named after a three-headed hellhound were also red flags, in retrospect.
    On the other hand, when you meet a character with a name like "Trusty Patches", you would expect to not be tricked into falling down a huge hole, at a minimum. Trust no-one, eh, Dark Souls.

    A bit of context on the last one.
    Pavel Morozov's name is a HUGE warning sign in itself actually.
    This is a name of a boy who (in the early days of Soviet) turned his own dad to the officials. ((To be fair - his dad was a criminal and the boy got killed by his dad's friends afterwards...))
    So at first this was "advertised" as an example for good honest citizen behaviour.
    Later - when mass shotings and Gulags were considered a bad thing - perception of this character changed and he became an example of treachery and nothing being sacred...
    So in Metro this character is quite well done for his name.

      IIRC the "crime" that his father commited was secretely (and illegally according to fucked up Soviet law) stashing food so that his family woldn't starve. Or that could've been someone else, there were several cases like that.

    • @pavelZhd
      @pavelZhd Před 8 lety +42

      Krzysztof Bartczak Nope. His crime was stealing fabric and selling is for profit from beneath the shelf.
      His family had no problems with food or anithing.
      But nice try on pulling a well known strawman on USSR.

    • @krzysztofbartczak3834
      @krzysztofbartczak3834 Před 8 lety +7

      Павел Жданов
      well, the other story i've read was that his father was selling forged documents. It was a giant propaganda war between the East and West and i would not be surprised at all if there wasn't even ever a boy named Morozov (well, there probably are some people with that surname in Russia, but you get my point).

    • @pavelZhd
      @pavelZhd Před 8 lety +28

      Krzysztof Bartczak true. USSR propaganda had a tendency to misrepresent some facts to make them look more heroic.
      For example the story of 28 Panfilov's men.
      Long story short: (according to propaganda) during the defence of Moscow in late 1941 a large gropu of german tanks were halted, stalled and eventually repelled by a group of 28 soldiers who didn't give any ground to enemy with no regard to losses.
      Sound pretty heroic, right.
      But some later investigations showed that the story was a bit different.
      For starters, Panfilov was in command of a whole regiment of about 2000 men. And while his regiment did stall germans for long enough for reserves to assemble, and mount a counterattac, the fighting had multiple tactical retreats.
      And the only connection to figure 28 that was made was a stoty of one detachment that did make a stan without retreating and held germans for about 6 hours taking 28 casualties (which is almost entire detachment personel).
      As you might guess Pavlik Morozovs story was put to such scrutiny as well... and it turned out pretty much true. But with some interesting additions.
      For example the fact that Pavlik was killed by his uncle within a week after his father was imprisoned, was not advertised by USSR...

He his part of a side quest is which, he offers you entrance to genoharadan, a secret assassin's guild, if you kill a few certain people, who turn out to be the other overseers of genoharadan. After you find out, you can challenge him to a one one duel on tatooine, but he turns up with an army. But, you kill him, and the quest ends. +outsidexbox You guys should now do a list of characters that you all "knew" would stab you in the back but in the end turned out to be good guys. Then again that one is a little more difficult since video game designers love stabbing you in the back, front, sides and even in the case of some games stabbing you in the spleen from inside your own body using a knife that wasnt there a minute ago.

      I honestly don't think it's that obvious, Rapture really seems like a place where you'd have to discard any moral code you might've had to survive. Just look at the state most people are in, it's horrifying. The game largely relies on Atlas not being found out, or not entirely, until the big twist.

I also spared him and managed to get the good ending where only the red line soldiers were ultimately slaughtered by the dark ones. I loved watching the absolutely surprised look on the Spymaster/General One-Eye Dick Bag.

    Mad Moxxi from the Borderlands Series. Yeah, Jack's the primary antagonist of 2, but the events of the Pre-Sequel (in which he's the protagonist and her betrayal drives the nail into his DEEPLY SEEDED PARANOIA) just. Just. It's good shit.

    I don't think the illusive man actually betrayed you unless you count when he sent you to get ambushed on the collector ship. After Mass Effect 2 you just went your separate ways. His ways just happened to include the creation of husks, the attack on Mars, and the attack on the Citadel to mention a few. You weren't friends at the time, so it wasn't really a betrayal.

      +Nicholas Kennedy And if you play paragon Shepard, you are a massive arse to him as well, through the whole of ME2. He brought you back to life, spent billions building you a new ship, and really was doing all the stuff the Alliance should have been doing but weren't for political reasons, and Shepard is really bitchy to him in thanks.
      I actually really liked him, in ME2 he was the definition of an anti-hero, having good intentions but bad methods. It's in ME3 when he goes from ensuring survival to ensuring supremacy that he becomes a bad guy. Still kinda liked him though. He was a charismatic son of a bitch.
      I really wished there was a way to get him back on-side, and team up with him against the Reapers. I wrote a fanfic where he was able to overcome the indoctrination for short periods of time, and used those times to clandestinely help Shepard before, when they meet on the Citadel, revealing he had those fields that blocked the indoctrination signal installed on all his ships, activates them, then orders his now not indoctrinated fleet to attack the Reapers with the Alliance, and they win without using the stupid Catalyst thing.
      I just wish that there was some way to get him back on your team in-game. Like, if you chose all the paragon options in dialogue with him in 2 and 3, you would be able to convince him he couldn't control the Reapers' power and he'd fight with you.

      +James Bennett I liked Illusive Man until he didn't want the Collector Base blown up. I don't think a Paragon Shepard disagreeing with him matter much because if you were a nice guy in the first game, he should know what you're like.

    • @nicholaskennedy6256
      @nicholaskennedy6256 Před 8 lety

      I don't think whether you blow up the collector base should be based on whether your paragon or renegade. The illusive man makes a good point about using the collector base. It is their best hope for beating the reapers. As a paragon character it's the choice I'm going to make. Destroying it doesn't really do anything. For that matter I dislike a lot of the paragon options. Like on Jack's mission you could either ask to negotiate, tell him the warden to go to hell, or call him out as a lying criminal. The paragon option is the worst of those.

      Nicholas Kennedy I don't think you can fully trust the Illusive Man's intentions, even if you like him. Especially after the weird stuff you find in Cerberus labs in the first game.

      Jack always tried to be the good guy and do what's best for mankind and his "distrust" for other species is justified (First Contact War, remember?).
      There is even some evidence pointing towards that he was somewhat aware that he was slowly losing control of his thoughts.
      And that's one of the reasons he did everything he could to resurrect Shepard. A loophole. A wildcard.

    They didn't even talk about why it should have been obvious Mr. Jefferson from Life is Strange was gonna be evil. He even rubs it in your face that at the beginning of the game, part of his lecture was "I could frame any of you in a dark room, capture you in a moment of desperation". Which is exactly what he did! It was genius on the writers' part because at that point in the game, most gamers are too busy trying to get their bearings on the controls to notice the blaringly obvious hint that he's evil. But, when it comes back around, you realize how obvious the betrayal should've been if you'd been paying attention.
