Hey Gordon! Thank you for the nice review! I have a minor request, can you please publish the actual digital files on your written review/website? The color, contrast and detail differences between the devices are quite prominent. It would be really helpful to see original file and the prints, to compare and see what to expect from each printer with the ground truth. Many thanks 😊
@@Gobekadam that's a good idea, I already have made some of the images available as part of some other tests, but I could include some in the CP-1300 review. I'll look into it.
@@cameralabs Thank you Gordon! It is much appreciated!
Nice good review on canon QX10 Vs INSTAX SP-3
To me I'll say and choose canon QX10 over the INSTAX SP-3 because if you put water onto the canon QX10 paper the image does not come out it stay the same
As I have the Canon SELPHY CP1300 Compact Photo Printer as it print out its
instantly dry and also water resistant so they will also look great for many years
But one thing I wish or hop canon or any other portable printer camera should have in them is a Bluetooth not WiFi... reason that is you still can use your phone internet and can also print things out of your phone internet
And also any other cameras can connect to the portable printer each other by Bluetooth just like how FUJIFILM camera connect ed to there cameras to print out
Oh keep up the great work on your CZcams channel 😉👍
instablaster.
I would have liked to see what the original photos looked like, to know how close to life each camera printed as well as the comparison to each other.
I've always wondered how these small print devices behave and your review was so useful to clear up some of the many questions I had about them. Another great review of yours. Thank you, Gordon, and keep it up 👍
Thanks and you're very welcome!
Spot on review as always. Now there is an update on Canon software. It recognises folders on your phone. I've got the Canon due to its image quality. For scrapbookers, the adhesive won't hold on on paper. That's why I returned it.
Thanks. I dont know if it was already pointed out but at 5:26, you can change the photo. You just tap the photo and it brings up more options, one of which allows you to reposition the photo. I need to get one of these as Ive put my Instax gear on the shelf for now. Really enjoying the Canon and Kodak instant film cameras and dye sub printers, way cheaper to shoot than Instax too.
Great review. I owned the original Kodak version (suspiciously similar to the Canon but not interchangeable) and when Kodak end of life the product, I bought the Selphy CP910. No need for the battery-operated one here. These prints are very expensive compared to local shops but as the photo biz continues to slow down not sure how the photo printing will be priced. Thank you for your excellent review.
just ordered my sp-3 actually lol thank you for the review!!
I figure someone would be happy with either printer but I found overall I liked the results from the Selphy more. Mainly I didn't like how reflective the Instax images were. Kind of feels like you'd have to dance around the image to see it properly, whereas the Selphy would be easier to see. But the Instax app is definitely the more appealing of the two.
As is typical with such things, I feel the "best" option would be a merging of the two!
It's a bit hard to predict the look of the photos from Instax SP-3. Sometimes the photos turn out too dark when they look bright enough on your phone.
Thanks for the great review. Would you rather recommend the CP1300 or the QX10? Both are in a similar price range.
This is the best review I have ever seen
Thought i wanted the Canon, turns out I prefer the Fuji.
Both are just too dang expensive
Best detailed review of this Canon printer on youtube. Thank you for that!
You're welcome, also check out my Cp1500 review!
Thanks for the review. I was originally interested in the Zink paper printers (like Hp Sprocket), but saw that the Canon Selphy makes the claim of being “100 year pictures”, by which I guess they will last 100 years, whereas the zink photo printers don’t.
I don’t want to take photos and then find them blank a few years later when I go to look for them!! I like both printers. Interestingly, the Fujifilm Instax camera which I’ve got, takes photos that look nothing like the real thing.. a huge amount of contrasts etc. But here the Fujifilm prints look a lot more like real life than I’d expect!
I have a zinc photo printer, canon qx10 and instax printers. My zinc print outs turned yellow after 5 yrs. I dont have print outs for the other two that are 5 yrs or more so i cant tell yet. But i love my canon qx10 a bit more bcos print outs are true to colour. And im also hoping they last a long time, as canon claimed. I dont like the glossy paper on instax film and the colours are cooler compared to the canon.
Thanks for a great comparison review.
I prefer the detail retention of shadows and highlights in the Canon images, but the speed of print, the fun factor of seeing the images slowly appear, and battery life, has sold me on the Fujifilm.
For a portable printer that I can do street photography with and hand off images to people I ask for portraits, the Fujifilm is the winner by far.
For more detailed prints I’ll just send them off to a printer. Oh, and I am shooting with the Fujifilm X-T2, so being able to print directly from the camera is a wonderful bonus. 😊
Yes, if you're a Fujifilm camera owner, it's hard to not go for the INSTAX!
i wish all reviews were like this
You brought up some very good points. Thanks for sharing
I heard you mention that the printer works over WiFi. Does it also connect via Bluetooth? I like to scrapbook when we are camping and typically do t have WiFi
Thank you for this review! This is exactly the kind of review I was looking for :)
Up next on Camera Labs we review a new time travel process that allows us to test the longevity of portable printer prints. :-) Thanks for the great review.
You're welcome!
I've decided I'll go with the Canon QX10. The quality looks promising! Also looking for the adhesive backpaper. Thanks for the review!!
If you bought it and used it
How is it and does it still work??
@@intoxinator It's been a year and I still use this gadget a lot :) ink cartridge jammed once and ruined a print, I claimed my guarantee card and now the print works fine again. As far as I'm concerned, the color doesn't fade. Hope this helps!
@@93feilicia70 thank you a lot! Especially for your fast answer :)
And yes, it helped me, I'm thinking about to buy it with the next money I have so again, thank you a lot!!!
Do you need to buy extra cartridges for this selphy? Thank you in advance :)
I like the Canon better in this case. The Fuji is punchier with more contrast, but you can simply add more contrast to the picture before you print it with the Canon, and you won't be left guessing if your highlights will clip.
That's true to some extent, but even with additional contrast applied, the INSTAX process has a punchier look just as part of the process. But if you want to avoid clipping at either end, the Canon is definitely more accurate, plus the colours on the dog and the coffee images were much more authentic on the Canon.
all selphies pictures i know come out to dark and with a yellow/green shift.
and its not just about mine, a lot of friends own one as its pretty cheap an paper os cheap
Seriously well done and very informative. Comprehensive shall I say.
Thanks!
I'm liking the square format more and more.....makes you think about composition more....plus I always think the square online photo books you can have made look far better....being consistent crops.
I like the square too...
You're the best reviewer out there!
Thanks!
really informative and thorough. thanks.
You're welcome!
Still hoping for an SP-4 Instax wide printer.
Aren't we all!
@@cameralabs agreed 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes indeed!
Fuji gods, please listen to your people!! 😂
It’s here now!
a very useful comparison, thank you for your work :)
You're welcome!
I may have missed this mention, but its worth pointing out that you can print directly to the Instax from a Fuji compatible camera (i.e. X100f, etc) without need for the app.
01:50
hi Gordon, txs for the comparison... Do you think you will be able to check also the new Polaroid Lab?
It will be fantastic to have your thought on it! :)
Take care!
I placed my order for the Instax sp-3. I love the idea of fully having the freedom to shoot something in RAW on my phone and then edit it nicely before getting the fiscal print. I'm just a photography hobbyist but I'm excited to be able to take the printer on trips and be able to create permanent keepsakes while I'm at it. The Canon printer looks nice but the idea of having to replace the ink sounds like a hassle. With the Instax you get that nice matte border around the printed photo which truly gives it that original Polaroid feel which in turn makes it look and feel more expensive. Also, the Instax printer shares the same film as the Original Square Instax cameras meaning the based on supply and demand that technology isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I look forward to saving up for a nice Fujifilm camera down the road and being able to pair it directly with the printer.
I'd like to ask, how has the Instax SP-3 been since you got it? Does it still function as it should? I've been very reluctant to buying one due to the immense amount of complaints and reviews pointing out that the app is terribly managed and cannot connect most phones to the printer. This makes the printer completely redundant for a lot of people.
@@KITRONIX111 hey! I received mine in November. I've used it a few times and it still works perfectly. The package recommends that if you go a long time with out using the printer you can take the batery out and store it in a safe place till you need it again. I haven't needed to charge it again after the first time I charged it. I use a Samsung phone and haven't had any issues with the app. Of course it's not the fanciest app out there but it gets the job done. It connects over Wi-Fi and it usually just takes a second for it to find my printer. Honestly no complaints in that regard. I got ths black one with little rose gold details on it. You can always fully edit your photo on lightroom or snapseed to get the best contrast and saturation on your image prior to printing. The Square film is a little tougher to find in store as it's not as common as the mini but you can always find it through Amazon.
@@MA-gk7pg Oh that's good to hear! I was planning on getting it as a gift for someone but was unsure since I don't know what phone they use. Luckily, we have stores in Ireland that sell the square film easily which is super convenient. Fingers crossed the printer won't give any trouble for them. Thank you for the helpful reply 😊!
@@KITRONIX111 best of luck! I'm happy with mine so far.
I think I prefer the outcomes of the instax printer. Maybe I just like the instant print quality. Plus it has more options. Thank you for doing a comparison. I love these videos.
You're welcome!
I've used the SP-3 for some time, now and I think I'll stick to it. I just like how convenient it is and that matters a lot for what I do with it. I typically use it at gigs in cafes, to immediately give something to the musicians. While I can see why the Canon might be better in some ways, it definitely wouldn't be better for my specific use case. Thanks for the very useful review!
You're welcome! yes, in a more ad-hoc environment, the SP-3 is definitely more convenient.
Hi, just wondering if your SP-3 still works properly in relation to connecting via the share app?
Hesitant to get the printer since I've seen a lot of people having problems connecting to the printer lately.
@@KITRONIX111 It's always worked perfectly, yes. Maybe I haven't used it enough for it to fail? I have printed many tens (over a hundred but I'm not sure how much more) but maybe that's not a lot? And I obviously can't use it much these days... Hopefully I'll start shooting live gigs again later this year.
@@ThomasParis that's reassuring to hear! Could I also ask, do you take the photos on a camera or are you using a smartphone? If it's a smartphone, what model?
@@KITRONIX111 I make lots of photos with my smartphone, including some I send as high quality prints to my fans. But the ones I print with the sp3, I usually make with a "real" camera, then send to my phone via wifi, then to the printer with the app. Not as easy as I wish it was but not a big deal either. Funny I would use better files with the sp3 than I do with the high quality prints 😜 But I use the printer mostly at live gigs and for those I want a better camera then I have in my phone.
Is the instax film fingerprint proof ?
Can you tell me why the Fuji color need tike to show up, what's the science behind it? Is it use cmyk inks too?
Is it possible to print directly from a DSLR to the printer?
I personally like Canon’s muted color.
does the machine have to be connected to wifi? I am looking for something that will work outdoors.
the detail looks better on the Canon. blacks are crushed and highlights blown out on the Instax. I was wondering if you could queue up print jobs on the Canon. This was useful on the Canon Ivy Cliq+. Though I forgot how many you could print in a row before the camera needed cooling down.
That's a good question and unfortunately I didn't test that aspect - I only had a few spare prints, so I generally used them slowly!
thank god i found this review. i am planning to buy my insta photoprint
Though the Fuji one seems to have better quality photos, I like that the Canon one uses sticker paper, very ideal for journaling! Aside from photos, you could probably use it to design stickers as well (even if it’s not the most cost effective, it’s at least convenient).
Yes, the sticky back prints are a big plus!
can u use canon one and use usb bank to charge it so can get more than 20 prints and if so what charge time to full as well?
For someone that shoots Fujifilm, the instant print function of the Instax SP-3 is a big selling point. You can print right off the camera including cropping without first transferring them to your phone.
I agree, I do that all the time, although it's annoying they removed the feature from the latest Bluetooth model.
Gordon Laing I can’t figure out why they won’t include this function. As all the current Fujifilm camera models have Bluetooth now so the Mini Link, a Bluetooth only printer, should be able to print off the camera, just like how WiFi equipped Fujifilm cameras have been doing for years.
@@IvanLai I've suggested that to them previously, but it may not be that simple. Maybe the cameras lack the required profile? i hope they can work it out.
@@cameralabs What feature was removed? You cannot print directly from recent Fujifilm cameras any more?
I have the Canon SELPHY 1200 and I was able to print directly from my EOS R, when I had it. Canon has quite decent direct printing feature? Doesn't it work any more with this QX10? That would be a shame on Canon.
It’s been a few years since you posted this thorough review. I’m curious to know how the prints have held up over the years.
They've faded more than instax
What about longevity of the photos? Do Zinc base photos usually fade quicker? Have no idea.
I don't know either and mentioned that towards the end of the video.
While there is a differenc? in initial cost one has to purchase paper and ink from Canon and paper from FujiFilm. What ultimately be the deal maker/breaker for most is the TCO for printing 1 photograph. Is there any analysis that you've seen which provides users with a cost per photo? Also, how many prints can you get out of the printer ink cartridge?
Don't I quote the cost per print at the start and say how many sheets are in each pack?!
With both the Canon and Fujifilm systems, you get everything with the package. So you just divide the cost of the package by the number of sheets. It's not like an inkjet printer where it's an estimate. But both work out to roughly 75 cents per print.
Excellent review. Thanks very much.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this review Gordon! So it sounds like the Fuji uses gelatin based film but the Canon might not? Can you confirm no animal products in the Canon? That would make it for me. Many thanks
That's a good question, I will try and find out.
@@cameralabs Did you ever find out the answer to this question as also interested to know?
@@amandahassall6259 sorry, it's hard to find answers to anything right now!
8:55 WOW, that's a bit of a difference.
Canon is better, more detailed
I thought that too, one is green the other blue, I'd like to know what the original photo was.
didnt he apply a filter to the canon one? Just guessing..
Great review Gordon, for Fuji its core business and thus lots of additional value for Canon its just another product thus just enough is good enough. Fuji by a country mile 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thats why Fujifilm dominates the instant film/camera market imho. As you say.... Its one of their core businesses, and they focus on it a lot. Seems like more of an afterthought to Canon.
My friend has this canon one and the photos look much better than my fuji one.
@@xxviciousbeautyxx -Hi, very interesting. Canon colours are great. 😎😎😎
I’ve always been slightly annoyed with the crushed blacks and blown highlights/ super contrast with the Fuji instax. If the Canon is more true to color and tones I think I might go in that direction. I already own the Fuji Instax printer.
You've just described all the things that INSTAX fans like about INSTAX! So if you don't like that style, then yes, the Canon could work out for you better
Gordon Laing funny 😄
Are you sure the QX10 battery is only good for 20 prints ? therefore you have to charge ti again for 120mintus for just 20 prints more?
My Instax sp3 ended up getting issues with the rollers, luckily within warranty. Did not replace it. Use the cp1300 now, I just read you can buy a square paper holder for it, I guess that turns it into a qx10
The print quality from the CP1300 / CP1500 is way better than the QX10!
@@cameralabs there's an additional tray PCC-CP400, only like €20, for credit card sized formas. It fits the square KC-18IS (5cmx5cm), stickers only unfortunately.
As soon as you mentioned the amount of prints per charge, the canon was a non starter for me at only 20 compared to 160 with the fuji 😮 what a huge under sight by canon.
I think it's fine for personal use, but obviously very limited for events.,
Gordon Laing you could be right. But, with 3 daughters who all like taking selfies with friends and printing them out To put on their cork boards, This wouldn’t last 5 minutes 😂
@@Shot_Geek I'd call that an event! But equally a battery limit could be seen as a feature to stop them wasting too many prints!
I still can’t choose. Both looks nice
Great review. Thank you. Just what i needed to help make a decision. I think ill ask for the Instax as a Chrissy present.
Hope you get one! Look out for discounts over the next 2 weeks
Thank you so much for this review!!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the review! Have been thinking about picking up an instant printer to supplement regular printing. I know I can print from my Canon 6d mark 2 to my main printer wirelessly, do you know if this is possible with the QX10?
Sadly not, it has to go via your phone.
@@cameralabs thank you for letting me know, a shame but probably still worth it 👍🏻
@@neildaintree you might be able to print wirelessly to the older SELPHY CP-1300 for 6x4in photos, but otherwise you'll need to copy your photos to your phone and print from that if you're using the two models reviewed here.
Do you have good deal for qx10 paper and ink ? The kit is quite expensive in France. Thx
Have you tried Amazon UK?
Gordon, which of the two is more accurate in color reproduction?
Crumbs, neither could be described as accurate.
Can the Canon QX10 print from pictures taken by Sony's QX10? 😉
Though I'm a Canon user for camera's, for printers I'd go for Fujifilm's SP-3 simply for logistics. QX10 requires to be on a flat surface with the sheet going in and out multiple times. Have to deal with multiple parts, battery life... I find that unacceptable in a chaotic environment like an event. I like durability and versatility so the SP-3 is more my speed.
Yes for events, go for the SP-3
Sir for canon qx10 need internet connection to print using mobile phone or open wifi only?
It connects straight to your phone, no internet or home / office wifi required.
Given multiple disadvantages over the Instax, it would have to be significantly cheaper. But it's not. The Instax is more useable in it's given context and waaaaaay more exciting as gifts for people. Literally no one cares how long it takes for the print to be ready after it's out of the printer and stable. It's a serious feature of the Instax, not a bug. I'll look at the Canon if they're forced to drop the price (per print - the machine cost is going to be a ridiculously small proportion over its lifetime) to compete.
The selphy is a replacement for drugstore photo printing. Slightly higher price, slightly lower quality, but it's very easy to use and you can print at home, no need to wait in a store.
@@mipmipmipmipmip if that were the case, it wouldn't be made this small and battery-powered. It's clearly designed for printing photographs on the scene - even if it can be used at home as a replacement for a drugstore print.
I have a photo of that little dog in Rome too. It’s quite the poser. 😁
Ha ha, really?! It certainly is a poser!
@@cameralabs Ha Yeah. Soon as I saw it I knew as I have nearly the same photo.
Hi where can I buy the paper and cartiage for this plz thxs
Target
So with the canon the paper is sold cheaper than Fuji-films offering. In addition to the paper I'd also have to purchase propriety ink cartridges. I'll stick to Fuji especially with its fantastic monochrome paper. I also prefer Fuji's colours.
you think i can laminate the photos to make it last longer?
You can certainly laminate them, but I don't know how it would affect fading, whether that's a UV issue, or simply ageing. If you have access to a store which sells the machine, see if you can get a print sample to take home to experiment with.
Choose fuji instax if you like your photos printed with blown highlights and crushed shadows.
Is it possible to use the Canon printer without internet connection?
Yes, the wifi is only used between the phone and the printer - it's not actually on the internet at the time.
I have the QX10 and I forgot the password I used now I can’t get in. Any ideas?
There should be a hard reset on the printer - check the manual.
Great review
Which photo can last longer? My instax mini's photo color gradually fade out after 2 year...become pale looking
The INSTAX will last longer than the QX10 prints in my experience. Were yours in sunlight?
When I comparis the photo's of the dog with a door behind the animal, then I see 2 different kind of color doors??? What happened? What was the original color of the door?
That's what happens with colour reproduction - some devices or processes do it differently and aren't always accurate.
@cameralabs which means instax printer turned green to black. It's a colorblind printer 😂
You, I have noticed, don't have a lot to say about printers. Is this something you could rectify?
I am looking for something that does a decent job, is ok for a handful of prints per month. Consts less than an Epson P600 and its alternatives, better than these.Able to produce calibrated prints. I can visit my local purveyor of phones, tablets, PCs, and printers, but I have no idea about how well they will do the job.
If you aren't in a position to do this, can you recommend someone (via "recommended channels") who caters for this?
I'd like to review more peripherals, but the sheer number of cameras occupies most of my time, and after that I generally cover a few lenses. That said, my handful of printer reviews have been some of my more popular videos, so I should try and do more in the future. Sorry, I don't personally know anyone doing printer tests.
did you try the Canon Pixma Pro-100? it's similar to the Epson, but I think it's superior. and it never clogs even if you rarely print. I've had expensive Epson printers get ruined because I didn't print often enough.
@@onlysublime None of the comparisons I see compare critical stuff like ease/cost of replacing heads, the consequences of not using the printer, or even whether the printer can be calibrated. I have discovered the Selphies cannot be calibrated, but the cost of running is determined by the cost of a pack of paper, and they're cheap enough to not worry much about replacing heads. The small pint size isn't a problem for some things I want to do, but I do care about the colours, and blacks not blocking up compared with what I see on screen.
There's a used 100S for a budget price from a local dealer, I might go for that.
Does the ink dry up like the bigger printer. I'm assuming you would need to replace the cartridges for this mini printer also?
No, it is not an inkjet printer, so there's nothing to dry up. The packs include paper and enough ink ribbon to print on them - there's no spare.
Gordon Laing cheers mate
Contemplating on getting this but think I'll stick to my mini link for now. I still like the glossy finish of the fujifilm prints. Thanks for your reviews. Hope it's not too late over there for that cuppa :)
@@ttdn8095 never too late!
Oh, never heard of canon square printer .., I have instax SP-3
It's brand new
Thank you
Not surprised the two systems might interpret some tones differently such as skin tone but WOW, the green-vs blue difference in the dog image @ 8:52 is astonishing.
That being said, I tend to choose "accuracy" (whatever that means) and deal with the headaches later ... but that laundry list of demerits for the Canon is serious.
Yes, I was surprised by that difference - the Canon was much more accurate on that one and the coffee cup. The originals are on my Instagram account @cameralabs
Sublimation is the way to go
The cost for the paper is now matching or more than the instax square prints for 20. Why the cp1300 postcard prints for 100 cheaper?
It's a different technology and different volumes.
Why are companies still using micro usb. Usb c has been out for ages.
20 PRINTS per charge? Wow that is hot garbage
Thank you.
What’s the ink cassette called and the right size
Just look up the Canon media for it
The use of auto white balance for this video was quite distracting.
Yes, i agree, sorry about that. I film under natural light and the Sun was in and out the whole time.
Please review on hiti P525l
Canon Selphy CP1300 is cheaper per print, allows bigger prints, with or without auto optimisations (better results without) and even to print bigger square formats (10x10cm) with appropriate layer software (ex : a custom layer in Lightroom print section). So it was my choice :)
I got also an Mint RF70 camera for Instax Wide pleasures.
Canon prints are of better technical quality but I’m looking for others renderings with an Instant photo camera, so different usages. But for me Instant photography means an analog camera, not an analog printer of possible digital files.
The CP-1300 is certainly good value. Are you finding any quality issues over time with it, like dust? I hear complaints from some people.
I have one (cp1300) and am very happy with it. No issues with dust, but I put it away when I'm not using it.
I am a CP1200 owner and happy user, too. I have Polaroid ZINK sticker and Instax Mini. I love mobile printers. In my opinion the image quality of the CP1200 is (far) the best. This is the reason I am interested in the QX10, but only when it can be used directly from my Canon cameras. I am planning to buy a Canon camera just for the QX10 for direct printing if it's supported by Canon. If it is not supported, I'll go for a Fujifilm camera to print directly from the camera.
@@cameralabs Just curious, is there any quality difference between the QX10 and CP1300?? Thank you.
@@yachenwu6907 Yes, completely different print technology. CP is much better

Instax print has crushed shadows and blown highlights.
Hey man, I’m just wondering is this printer able to print via AirPrint? Please
I mean the canon one.
I will prefer fuji as it is more convenient
Steve Huff! 🤗
You're the first to notice!
Is there any mor cost efficent printer then qx10? The paper is 1 pound / each wich is not that good. But i need the portability/size. Anyone? :)
Canon CP1500
Am I the only one hating the top bezel in Instax prints being bigger than side one?
It’s preventing me from buying, it’s really horrible.
Is that really micro USB on the Canon? It looks like non-standard, defunct MINI USB.
Nope, it's definitely Micro USB
Not looking forward to scrolling until I get to picture 3002 or higher.
Groovy.
