The A10 has saved my life many times, while serving overseas. The feeling you get when they arrive on station is one you will never forget.
Never served myself, but likewise, thanks for your service. That being said i have seen A-10s doing spring manuevers and they flew over me not more than 75 feet, and let me tell you, when a plane can fly past you that low before you hear it, it makes you glad its on your side.

One of the phrases that goes around about the Warthog is that: "If you hear the gun, you weren't the target"
does that imply for snipers as well
I also have to say after serving two tours in Afghanistan the A-10 has saved my life multiple times. There was one occasion where we were almost certain that we were not going to survive an A10 showed up just as over 40 insurgence were rushing us and managed to push them back. And we managed to escape with only a few minor injuries . If that A-10 had not shown up all 12 of us would not of survived to make it back home .About 10 years later I was driving Uber to make some extra money and I happen to pick up the pilot who had saved my life and the life of all my team. He was going to take his last fight in the A-10 before he retired . I don’t think I have ever cried so much after we told both of our view points of what had happen during the battle. I will never forget the sound of an A-10 as it what gave me a Second chance at life (several times) .
The other plane you where interested in that looks like a flying triangle was the B-2 Spirit .
You two should sit down and write a book. This would be awesome to read from both views. But meeting the pilot who saved your squad must've been the most amazing feeling ever. Hope you two still talk to this day and are best friends. A bond like that should never go away.
@@DrDennis05 Yes I thought about that but when I even think about some of the things in Afghanistan that I went through I have nightmares for months. This particular set of events when I spoke to pilot over the radio I literally told him to drop the Ordnance on top of us knowing that we would not survive the conflict or his gun/bomb run but that the people attacking us would not get to use our body’s for propaganda. Pilot acknowledged and said good luck to you I’ll see you on the other side. But with his expert skill he didn’t hit any of us even though he dropped several bombs within 5 m of us and probably fired over 1000 rounds of 30 mm exploding ammunition to drive them back. It was probably one of the most scariest experiences I’ve ever lived through and I truly hope that no one ever hast to go through the same again. It’s not just the people to come back missing pieces it’s the people that come back that have seen to much and don’t know how to describe it to others . With my grandfather told me about World War II there were things that he told me that I just couldn’t understand the complexity of it. Now experiencing these things I understand what he was telling me. Even after I’ve gotten back and a lot of my unit has gotten back. Several of them committed suicide because they didn’t know how to deal with it and there was no support for them to deal with the trauma that they had endured. I wish all veterans with seek help if they need it and not be looked down on for doing so .

I never served but I have many family members that did. From the very bottom of my heart, I thank you for being willing to serve our nation. I am truly sorry for the lingering issues it has caused you. I am going to pray for you right after I write this message that God will take those disturbing memories from you and help you heal. I cannot imagine what our military members go through. From a very thankful citizen I promise you that all of us that did not serve but still are grateful for this country, we love you.

When you're a grunt and you're pinned down, outnumbered and taking heavy fire, the feeling when you hear that A-10 overhead is indescribable
Honestly, I think the best part about the A-10's development is the fact that they built the gun, and then built the plane around the gun.
Not only that but when they built the plane the engines would starve for power when that glorious brrrrt would go off and they would shut down. So instead of changing the freedom utensils inner workings, they made the death delivery system to where it would automatically restart the engines every time they spit those freedom seeds
I still love the story mentioned in the video, where the A-10 gets shot-up, pretty badly even, and the pilot just goes to manual control and brings her craft back to base. Super hope that girl got a medal. Way to fly, yo.

Welcome to the American warrior mindset.
I was in Iraq back in 91 as a member of the 101st Airborne when a battalion of T72's were approaching our position. Now as an airborne troop sometimes your hung out in the open with nothing to fight armor but your radio and that's what we faced on that day. We dug into the earth and prayed for relief which came from a squadron of Warthogs who flew in and chopped up those tanks. No one can tell me those airplanes are ugly as I never saw anything more beautiful.

I mean, I always thought rigged Hollywood was cheating, and full battle rattle was more like it; but add a Javeline and it was "A Bridge Too Far" (if you'll pardon the pun).
They can call em 'ugly' all they want, but its mechanical beauty and technical redundancy at every turn, you cant really kill these things, and trying to only seems to piss em off

Ummmm no....first DS war did not have an infantry unit be approached by a bunch of tanks. Lol 101st wasn't even sent in until after the US tanks and aircraft like the A10 went in first. Lol
@@nexpro6118 Also, 101 isn't Airborne, it's Air Assault. That's why they were sent to fight the Ebola outbreak a few years ago; because neither is airborne.
And unlike his statement, you DO got Javelins and Carl Gustav's in Airborne Infantry Platoons.

As a Army Infantry soldier in Iraq. This thing saved our butts several time. Forever grateful for this plane.
My life has been saved a few times by the pilots of these planes. As a result it's my favorite plane ever. A true angel from heaven when you're facing certain death.

As a former Army Infantryman I can say with confidence we LOVE the A-10! You feel so confident when you hear the pilot over the comms. You’ve got to hear the “brrrrrrtttt” in person, it’s amazing.
Fun Fact: The A-10 is the only plane built AROUND a gun and not the other way around 💪🏻
I was gonna mention that - good call. The cannon was developed first! They didn't build a airplane, they build a cannon, then told their subcontractors "OK, someone put wings on this thing"! The A-10 is eventually what came out.
The Phoenix long range air to air missile was developed, but needed an airplane to carry it, adding another reason to develop & build the F14 Tomcat, where they stole many of the design features from the FB-111 Aardvark. The F14 Tomcat is a superior interceptor & dogfighter to the F18 Hornet but could not carry a ground attack payload the Navy was hoping for. But the Hornet did give the Navy their first supersonic attack aircraft, replacing the A-6 Intruders and the A-7 Corsair IIs.
That's literally propaganda they told the military.
Air Force keeps saying they want to get rid of the A10 (been saying this for 30 years) next time they say this I'd love the army to say "we'll take'em"
There was a period of time when the USAF wanted to cancel the program. With lots of pressure, thankfully they came to their senses and kept it alive. Ask any ground troops what aircraft they like overhead, and they’ll all say the A-10.
As someone who was deployed a few times I loved hearing the A10 pilots come on radio saying they was in the air

The only pressure needed was the Army saying that they would take the program over. Even though the Air Force spun off from the Army after WW2 they do not want to let the Army get fully back into piloted combat aircraft. The Army should have the A-10 program.

The A10 has saved my life on many occasions. And yes when you hear that iconic sound it is a sigh of relief. On one occasion we were under heavy fire almost surrounded, we fought for what seemed like ages. When I heard that beautiful plane purr I nearly cried.

As a Marine that has served on the ground, there is no greater feeling than being in a fight and hearing the A-10 is inbound and then hearing the tell tale "Brrrttt". That black "Triangle" you saw is the B-2 stealth bomber. Other aircraft that would be worth checking out that are unique to the USA. The B-2, the Osprey, and the AC-130.
I grew up not far from one of the plants that they used to build some of the first V22 Ospreys. It was an experience having Amish buggies to pass on the shoulder of the road while a V22 Osprey flew overhead on a test flight 😂❤ #ThatsAmerica
What about the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird"? I think it's worth checking out and a very beautiful plane.
@@jclowe735 they say the first thing you notice about an SR-71 on the ground is that it leaks fuel all over. It's actually designed that way because at the altitudes it flies there is no leakage.

I hope that we always have the A-10, or an improved future version, to support our ground troops. Sadly, the Air Force has never been too happy about the close air support mission... they seem to much prefer pointy nosed, stealthy, high altitude, supersonic aircraft that really aren't much help when troops are in contact. All respect to the Warthog drivers and maintainers.
On training exercises I've been "attacked' by the A10. It's surprisingly difficult to spot from the ground. It's also very quiet as it comes in. You don't really hear it if you are vehicle mounted. Until it attacks. You only hear the scream of the engines as it climbs away. It is extremely maneuverable. Watching one go defensive as it pulls out of an attack is something to see.
Turbo fans are much quieter than straight jets
A friend of mine worked on the design and building of the A-10. She was one of the first women to graduate from the university of Michigan with an engineering degree which led her to the field of military aviation engineering. Of all the planes she worked on she said the A-10 was her favorite. Thanks for sharing the video from your family to us. For many decades the Pentagon has tried to retire the Warthog only to keep her flying because of her invaluable properties and lives saving record.
There's an old joke about this jet. "If you hear the BRRRRRRRT, then you weren't the target." It's also about 1/7th the cost per flight hours of the other jets due to the interchangeability of the parts and it's relatively low maintenance compared to other jets.
I bet you could build at least 5 or more A-10's for just the cost of one F-35.

Stealth bomber
I'm a USAF veteran and my first duty station was A 10s. Went to Desert Shield/Desert Storm with these birds and they saved countless American troops and wreaked holy havoc on the enemy. To this day still my favorite airframe.

This is one stupidly resilient aircraft, when you heard "Titanium Armor", they mostly mean the "Titanium Bathtub" which shields the bottom of the cock-pit, protecting the pilot and equipment from rifle fire, The canopy (Window), is also Ballistic rated glass, serving the same purpose of protecting the pilot. This aircraft is rumored to be able to fly missing half a wing, or with an engine out, If you think you killed it, You've only made it Angry.
Ah also if i may ask, Would you also check out the AC-130? (Also known as the Angel of Death)

Looking up Brrrrrt compilations is a good way to spend the day! These planes are devastating to opposing ground forces, and a big psychological weapon as well. The sound of that cannon is unmistakable.
The King of brrrrrrrrt. The sound of the cannon is so iconic that there's memes about it. Forgot to mention that if the person hears the cannon then that person wasn't the target. See and hear the rounds hitting then hear the cannon. I'll send a video link of the A-10 at the range.
Been working on this incredible aircraft for 17 years. Love this plane, always will. Even with its age it's an amazing jet to work on and with.

Can attest to the importance of the A-10 to infantryman on the ground when in difficult situation. The Hog, Apache, and AC-130 are angels on our shoulders. Probably saved my life a couple of times. Hearing that brrrrrrrrt is such a relief.

Was stuck in traffic going to an airshow, and an A10 pilot took to the air and started cutting loose with all sorts of aerobatics. Couldn't ask for better entertainment on the way to an event like that 😀

I would like to humbly ask that you look in to the AC-130. It’s also known as, The Angel of Death. It’s the ugliest, deadliest, most beautiful ground support platform we have. I think you guys will really enjoy hearing more about it.

My brother was AC 130 mechanic in Vietnam.
He has told stories about heavily damaged A 10s that made it back to base where there was no explanation how they were able to fly much less land.
Specifically, look up the AC-130U 'Spooky.' It's something Michael Bay uses in Transformers movies.

Not a service member but I’ve herd so many stories about the A-10 saving so many soldiers. I also find it funny the whole time the video was going the only thing said was wow😂
God bless the A10 and all who fly her. I, and countless others, are here today because of the A10. When it all hits the fan there is no greater noise than an A10 on approach followed by the distinct sound of her guns.
If you guys have any questions about the A-10 let me know. My old man was what is affectionately known as a "Hog Driver." He was the squadron commander for the 511th TFS at RAF Alconbury and took his squadron to Desert Storm/Desert Shield back in the day. One of his pilots Todd "Shanghai" Sheehy also had one of the two A-10 Air to air kills.
Had a friend over there call them battlefield angels. Said when they were pinned down the distinct sound of its engines would make grown men sob tears of joy and relief
When the A-10 was at Grissom AFB they used to use my house in the country to practice. Awesome plane. First time I about jumped out of my skin.😂 I fell in love with this jet. Followed it’s journey for years. even though I worked 40+ years on the Abrams transmission, I still marvel at the A-10!
They used to do practice runs over the Salamonie reservoir out of Grissom. that's about 35-40 miles due east. they would stay in the area for sometimes as long as 10 min. going back and forth real low doing whatever they were doing. seen them do this stuff ALOT over the years.
One of my top 5 favorite fighters. The engines are high so as to not pick up debris from unfinished airfields. The plane was literally designed around the gun and was responsible for more armored vehicles destroyed in Iraq than any other source. Remember, it fires either 2100 in "low" or 4200 in "hi" rounds per minute...or 70 rounds the size of beer cans per SECOND. I can fly with most of 1 wing shot off or most of the tail destroyed and has THREE independent flight control systems for redundancy, not to mention the titanium armored 'bathtub' around the pilot. It brings its crew home. Its a 1977 vintage aircraft so its 45 years old....and still the bad kid on the block. They have recently started upgrading them, adding even more capabilities.
I was quite impressed with the young girl, because she actually pointed out probably the most important part of the A-10, which is it's ability to carry an insane amount of support weaponry without getting shot down.

In the 70's & 80's, while I was in the US Army, I got to watch the A10 & AH1 Cobra helicopter work in tandem to decimate targets during training exercises. All I can say is I was glad that they were both on our side. I definitly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either one!
I've similar guns like that fire onboard Navy ships. Brrrr 3000 rounds gone.

People been saying we lost the Afghanistan War...no WE did not lose this war. We trained the Afghanistan military for 20 years, they have to step up the plate to DEFEND their country....the same way as Ukrainians are doing now. This is one-time we should put US boots on the ground in 🇺🇦. I really doubt that Putin would start a nuclear war...the end of Russia. Did you know Russian population is 145.20 million compares to USA is 337.550 million but they have a larger land mass.
It's crazy to me that the A-10 has been my favorite since I was around 7...... I'm 40 and the Warthog still kicks ass! It seems that "they don't make'm like they used to" has truth to it.
1) I think the main reason "they don't make'm like they used to" is the shift in leadership's thinking from designs specialized to do one job exceptionally well, to multipurpose designs.
2) That and the shift from designing it, building a prototype, testing it, and then creating a finalized design before starting production to Just-In-Time design that tries to do all of the testing in a simulated virtual environment. The idea was that this would save a lot of money and time, but it has proven to be a disaster.
3) Lastly, there is a benefit in older platforms in that they have been tested and revised over and over. Weaknesses have been fixed. Failure-prone parts have been redesigned. Also typically, a platform doesn't stick around long enough to become old if it isn't good. New platforms have to start from scratch. Of course, a new platform has to start somewhere. :)
@@Trifler500 Great reply. You brought up things I hadn't even considered. I think #3 is probably why it's still used to this day. Tweeks and fixes and updates make an already good machine viable for much longer.

I've witnessed the A-10s devastation first hand while serving in Iraq....nothing compares to hearing that BRRRRRRRTTT to give you that warm fuzzy feeling of safety. Love that plane and the pilots who fly them.

That beast saved our butt several times over there in Afghanistan. Check out the vehicle called the husky. It was a combat engineer vehicle used to find IEDs uses one driver and the cab can be removed from the chasis to another one in minutes.

When we saw these on the battlefield we knew we would be ok!! that's how much we respect them!!!
I was stationed with these at Moody AFB in GA. During the Gulf War they had no night vision sensors or capabilities at that time.What the pilot’s figured out was they could use the infrared screen on the Maverick missile targeting system as night vision to fly the aircraft and engage targets at night.
also, regarding "survivability"... the pilot sits inside what amounts to a large, thick-walled, titanium tub.
another iconic aircraft that you need to check out is the AC-130 "Angel Of Death" Gunship.

The Warthog is a beautiful airframe, and is more of a flying tank. When it is cheap, bulletproof, highly modifiable, maneuverable, has devastating fire power, and can be crammed with new upgrades. You just leave it alone.

My father was in ammunition’s for a10s. I’ve sat in one, such a cool plane! The pilots have a HUD on their eye piece that give them eye precision for targeting

There are some really good pictures of damage that the A10 has taken during operations and still managed to land... The damage they showed in that video was nothing compared to some of the worst damage its taken. It can still fly missing 3/4 of one wing or something like 1/2 overall wing span in damage, with 1 engine out and 1 vertical stabilizer missing... It has hydraulic primary control surfaces and mechanical cable based backups. They are unbelievably tough which couples with their missions perfectly... They aren't meant to stay high and way above the danger of the battlefield but to be down low just above treetops and hill sides, right in the thick of the battle where they can put munitions on their targets and protect the soldiers on the battlefield. As others pointed out the infantry has an absolute unconditional love for these being in the sky to cover their backsides
That “triangle” plane is the Stealth Bomber, or B-2 Spirit, and would be a great aircraft to learn about next.

I love the A-10, it is tied with the F-22 for my favorite military plane, the BRRRRRRRRRRRT is probably the best sound i've ever heard
I was actually lucky enough to call in CAS with an A-10 in Desert Storm. The AF pilots were super cool and laid back and basically talked me through everything. It took out a BMP and many Iraqi troops.
My brother was an army jumper and i was airforce, when he got married i gave him and all the other groomsmen the spent shells from an a10 i worked with.
Any time i was deployed and got to work getting an a10 airborne i knew it was going out to save our guys, this jet can not be replaced.
Hi NZ fam... the flares are actually burn super hot, albeit for a short time. Their main purpose is to draw any heat seeking missles that might be fired to the flares an not to the engines on the aircraft. The "black triangle" was a stealth bomber. You can find plenty of videos on CZcams about that if you are interested.
The black " Triangle " is the B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber.. We also have the F-117A Stealth Fighter .. But what I love is the F-35 Joint Strike Figher and the F-22 Raptor .. Which America will not sell to anyone .. Its ours .. lol
@@krisfahnz The F-117 was "retired" in 2008 primarily due to the fielding of the F-22 Raptor.
Despite its official retirement, a portion of the fleet has been kept in airworthy condition, and Nighthawks have been observed flying since 2009. (my bet is the CIA is flying them)

it's essentially a gatling gun with wings. and when that GAU fires, it produces almost as much backwards thrust as one of the two engines.
They basically designed the airframe around the gun didn't they?

Yep. They even had to do slight modifications to the frame and engine placement to reduce the possibility of the burned/burning propellant messing with the engine's air supply because early tests showed that the GAU fired so much, so quickly that the ejected gases could cause engine stall-outs.

There is a more detailed video documentry where the designers talk about the design of the aircraft and becouse they was designing it for CAS they first picked out the cannon and pretty mutch build a plane design around it. The A-10 isent a plane with a cannon. It´s a flying cannon.

Also mentioned that the gun fires faster than the sound of the gun. That delay fire is amazing to hear.
The big thing we had when I served in the Army back in the 70"s was the Cobra Helicopter. You might want to look up the Apache Helicopter as well.

@@jaymellenen2088 Yes when I was in we watched a firepower demo of the Cobra. They could feather the props and you wouldn't hear them until too late. They would light you up then fly over checking out the damage truly awesome.
The engines are mounted up high like that so that they don't pick up debris when taking off and landing on unimproved (dirt) runways. It also keeps the engines from inhaling all of the smoke and fumes from the cannon.
And makes it harder for an IR-guided SAM to get an "off-axis lock on" (ie not looking up the tailpipes at the exhaust plume) because the wings block the engine's IR signature from the ground on side shots.
What they didn't tell you in that, is captain Cambel also had a serious leg wound, her helmet took flack, and she was loosing blood. She still landed the thing.

Not to mention one got shot down (pilot was rescued) during the same mission and one landed with one engine blown off at a captured Iragi Air Base (so no cameras), I know because I saw it!
They had to fly lower than normal that day due to dust conditions to support the ground troops entering Baghdad...

My neighbor lady, and another guy at church, both refuel jets in flight for the U.S. Air Force (USAF). Sometimes they say, "I was in Greenland three days this week," or "I was in Alaska earlier this week." It's really amazing how they do their work.

I am an old man now, but I was in the military in the 70s. I remember seeing these come in for the first time and thinking to myself what an ugly plane! I was used to seeing f14, a6, and hueys. It did not take long to see the real beauty of these planes! Thanks for sharing!

I loved this bird before I ever joined the military. After I joined and spent time overseas, I love it even more. You are absolutely correct, the sound of that gun, or even just the engines overhead has a seriously calming effect. Best music you'll ever hear.
I am a United States Army Vet. And had the ability to call for A-10 Warthog support. And the 30mm canon on the front of the A-10 so powerful that if they did more that a 10 round burst, the plane would stall.
I'm pretty sure they're slinging more than 10 rounds at a time.
In the maximum two seconds of firing they’re letting go approximately 115 rounds. In the first second, as it takes a fraction of a second for the gun’s rotation to come up to speed, it fires approximately 50 rounds.
It is an amazing war plane. Back in the late 80's I was visiting family in western Louisiana. One morning I drove out in the woods to suface collect arrowheads. I had parked on the road going over the top of a hillThe northern slope of the hill was cleared of forest leading down to a farmhouse. I was walking along when I heard a distinct noise and looked to the north just above the tops of the trees. There were three warthogs headed directly at me. I was in their flight path to the Peason bombing rance located north of Fort Polk in Kisatchie National Forect. As they got up to me, the far left pilot rocked his wing tips to wave at me.

I live near the former England Air Force base in Louisiana where the A-10 were stationed. I do miss seeing those bad boys.

I am a Crash Rescue Firefighter and the main aircraft I work with is the A 10. I still love checking them out and watching them fly at work. Seen a bird I have worked with in the video :)
Coming from someone who’s butt was saved by an A-10 we heard the impact of the bullets, then the gun, then the plane. It was an awesome thing to witness and hear.
Thats one thing I'll never forget on my 1st tour when we callled support in and that 1st time I heard that cannon go off you could feel it in your chest.We cheerd em on with every pass it was amazing the damage they did.
When I was in the US Army back in 2009 in the 3rd Infantry Division we had a few of these on our side.. :)

When this plane was new they flew them everywhere in Germany. The thing that got me was how quiet it was. You can see it coming but you don't hear it until it's on top of you. In other words if you hear it, you're dead already. 450 miles per hour at tree top level is nearly impossible to shoot at. I've watched them dropping bombs and shooting the cannon. We always called the sound of the cannon God farts LOL
My dad served in Germany briefly during the early 80s (so, WEST Germany, technically) as a Ground Radar operator/tech (he was a Warrant Officer in charge of the unit). He told me of a time when they were having war games and his radars had been set on a hill at the edge of a forest. Across the valley in front of them, coming out of the trees on the opposite hill, they both saw and detected on their radar a group of "enemy" tanks. There were no battle groups nearby to protect them, so they frantically radioed in that there were tanks in front of them and to send help fast before the tanks spotted them. They waited nervously as the tanks rolled by along the opposite ridge, hoping they wouldn't see the radars. Dad said he heard a whistling noise but couldn't tell what it was or where it was coming from. The radars were directional, and only saw what was in front of them, which happened to be the unit of tanks. Suddenly two A-10s flew right over their radar units, JUST above the trees, and dove for the tanks. Of course, it was war games, so the A-10s didn't actually shoot at the tanks, just recorded them as kills and then flew off. He always said that he heard nothing but the whistle until they screamed by directly overhead.
Lol, I once lived 15 miles from a USAF range. You are correct on how quiet the A-10 is, except when they fire up the GAU-8......that you hear 20 miles away......

I got to sit in one at an airshow! The crew had a dummy round from the GAU-8 that was the size of my forearm! One of the coolest experiences I've had!

These got a HUGE update recently to compete against our F35s and with the upgrades, they became even more deadly. When I was serving, I had 2 times where they saved my life from overhead. I watched the one defending us as we fought take a missile that ripped one complete wing all the way off. That jet flew all the way back home and landed with ONE wing and ONE engine. Its low and slow and saved us as ground troops so many times. The A 10 is my favorite Jet along with the F 22 Raptor. They've been around since the 70s I believe, give or take some time. The jet that saved us that flew back with one wing and one engine left, was fixed and refit and flew again. I wanted to be an A 10 pilot but I wear glasses and that disqualified me so I joined in artillery. A 10s make a VERY VERY loud BRRRRRRT sound that sounds like a saw ripping or in my opinion, the cannon screaming BUUUURT!!! LOL. If you would like to hear any of those stories I have of the two times it saved my life, let me know, I'd happily share them. Or if any questions, I know a lot about them when I wanted to pilot one, I studied hard until I was d.q.ed because of my eyesight. oh, and every bullet it shoots from that nose cannon, the Avenger, is the size of a beer bottle and fires about 3500ish rounds a minute. Its cannon can penetrate and kill tanks and does so VERY well.
I saw a story that A-10 pilots participate in mock air battles against jets to learn tactics and the like and one thing the A-10 has working for it is the fact it can turn so quickly. The opposing jet has one of two choices at that point deal with the GAU-8 pointing at it or turn tail and then have a Sidewinder fired at its hot tail.
Like the "El Micky Mouse" comment very fitting; I was a ground warrior and hearing that nose gun go off after I called in air support is something that I will never forget ever.
The engine placement is to protect them from ground fire...since it is a low level attack aircraft....truly amazing plane...
Designed in the 1970’s. The engines are mounted high for 2 reasons. First reason is for protection from ground fire. The second reason is for rough field operations. Less chance of sucking in debris.
And they had to be externally mounted to fit the cannon into the fuselage

The A-10 has been around since the late 1970's... they "experts" thought them obsolete prior to the 1st Gulf War - which is where they demonstrated their true capabilities.
They are a plane designed for a single purpose - but they do that one thing at a level no one can match.
Ya the Frogfoot is not doing so hot in the Ukraine. I think Drones and man portable missile firepower has changed everything. Powered armor next?

the f 1 11 did more work and the 30mm could barely pen m48s in testing, and the a10 the has the same problem as ww2 il2s and typhoons where they hit their target but not do any actual damage

There is an air base in my region of the US. I watched them circle over a lake for an hour and just hold pattern and almost play during my wedding shower. I had more of an eye on the sky than my guests.
We have Martin State Airport here in Baltimore where well over a dozen of these A-10s stationed.
I always love driving past the airstrip and seeing those Warthogs under the canopy, next to the roadway in plain view, ready-to-go
The A-10's engines are situated to minimize their infrared (heat) signature as viewed from the ground. That's to protect them from heat seeking surface to air missiles.
It probably helps with heat seeking air to air missiles too. While the flares distract incoming missiles, the lower heat signature makes reacquiring the A-10 more difficult.
They are also shielded somewhat from ground fire by the wings and empennage. The engines are left-right interchangeable as are many of the control surfaces.
They are also spaced apart so if a missile hits one, the other should still be fine.
They are also oversized high-bypass and heavily armored. They can chew up small arms fire without reducing combat capability.
They are also placed high up so that in the event air fields are taken out they can land and take off on make-shift highways and roads set up with fuel and munitions vehicles. With high air intake there is less chance of ground debris being sucked into the turbines on takeoffs.

I've always loved the Warthog! When I was a kid we lived on top of a hill. The a-10s would come over the house just above the tree tops and we were 50 miles from their base. We'd wave at them and they'd waggle their wings. Sometimes the flew up the valley and we'd see them from above! Great reaction!
I believe the A10's first flight was in 1972. FIFTY years ago and it's still going strong.
It's been a long time since I was in the service but I still remember the relief of hearing that A-10 burp when you were jammed up. You knew right then that things were going to be, if not alright, at the least, much better.
They forgot to tell you that the A-10 is also in the Marine Corp Air Wing - as a Marine, I have seen them in action - They also did not tell you - when A-10 fires its main gun, it slows the aircraft down. When you need help, make a call and sit back and watch it go to town on the enemy. They are great friend to the Marine Grunt - Semper Fi

Brrrrrt, best one there is for ground support. None even comes close. I just love this plane. If you're in real trouble, its sound is heavenly and puts a smile on your face. Unforgettable stuff.
The A-10 has what's called a "titanium bathtub" around the cockpit that helps ensure pilot survivability. I used to work on the F-16's ejection systems, and the A-10 has the same base system.
I have the privilege of working on a base that contains multiple A-10s. Watching them scream overhead will never get old! I also hear their guns occasionally, and it as awesome as you could imagine!

When traveling to Tucson, AZ I drive by Davis-Monthan AFB and love watching these take off and land. If you are interested, the base does offer tours through the Graveyard and Base.
I love this plane. The reason is because during the test fire of it, the engine they had hooked up to it to power the weapon, the weapon fired so fast it stalled the engine. Also, they literally built the plane around the gun. It's literally a gun with wings
I'm retired Army served two tours in Iraq and the A-10 saved my buddies and my lives more than once. The sound of its main gun is music to our ears. The A-10 is a blessing to our ground troops. Love the content! Keep up the awesome work!!
The A10 is my third favorite plane. A literal flying tank. My fourth is that mysterious flying v you mentioned, which is the B-2 Spirit. Amazing tech on that plane. Favorite is the F-22 Raptor, a superiority fighter, another amazing plane to check out. Second would be the fastest jet that ever flew, the SR-71 Blackbird. It is no longer 'in service' though NASA and rumored the CIA each have one plane in operation. (edited spelling)

I remember seeing a video about A-10 training that showed an A-10 flying through a forest. Yes, you read that correctly. Most of the time it was passing between trees by flying sideways and was nailing targets with its nose gun.
If you think it sounds crazy on a video hearing it in real life is ridiculously awesome. It's unbelievable what it actually sounds like.
There was a time some 40 years ago that every young child @10-12 wanted to be an F-14 Tomcat pilot. Now I think they want to fly the fire breathing son of a gun. That A10 Warthog is by far the baddest boy on the block. One badass aircraft.
I spent a year in Afghanistan, and my unit and I all had a very affectionate nickname for the A-10 planes and their pilots.
Because they usually engaged at relatively low altitude, and saved us so many times they were like guardian angels to us, we called them the "Angels on our Shoulders."
I owe these planes and pilots my life, several times over.
I fought beside Kiwi's in Afghanistan and loved their spirit and their way of looking at things. I was given a black kiwi hat by the commander of kiwi forces, awesome guy. We talked for an hour about capabilities and how to maximize training. Then we talked about fishing for another hour.
The A-10 is a great aircraft!!! It's one of my favs!!! They were based in Bagram when I was there in Afghanistan!! The history of it is amazing!!! In addition to it being built around that monster cannon, the titanium bathtub, and its massive load out, General Pierre Sprey was the one that pushed for its existence!! In the early 1970s hard lessons were being learned in Vietnam and Gen Sprey was part of a small group of generals that were thinking outside the box!! It's a really fascinating story!!! If you look up the "Fighter Mafia" and General Boyd, they had a major influence on their time!!

I am a late 80's ground pounder. Saw this phenomenal aircraft do it's thing in Germany, during peace time. Desert Sheild and Desert Storm, I actually had these guys on radio, called for close air support. Saved my butt a few times... along with thousands of others.
