Are all e-bikes going to look like a Specialized? Loads already do!

- Have you noticed how so many new 'lightweight' e-bikes look really similar? From the Whyte E-Lyte to the Specialized Turbo Levo SL, Cube Stereo AMS Hybrid One44, Cannondale Moterra SL, Canyon Neuron:ONfly, and Orbea Rise, seemingly every diet e-bike is sharing a very similar silhouette with the shock positioned under the top tube. And the reason for this is simple; to get both the battery, and the inevitable range extender, as low and central as possible. In this video Danny and Alan talk about why this is so important, and how it's narrowing the scope of designs. We also talk about the brands with suspension layouts that fall outside this box, and whether we may see them abandon their signature designs to optimise weight distribution and handling.

Super vid,you capture the great feeling of reading the MBR mag.
Very good video 📹 👍 👌 👏!!
Interesting observations, designing bikes not that trivial! 👍
Hello , Are you sure that the power more can be installed on the Cube ONE55 ? I was told that Bosch do not accept to deliver the firmware modification on all the stereo hybrid ebikes equiped with the piggy back shock .
Hmm, not sure to be honest. It’s the first we’ve heard of this but will look into it. 👍
That last part about not needing a range extender that where's we're headed I think. Also what about a battery pack/ quick charger to quickly rechange the main battery in a way that doesn't degrade the battery more than the normal charge rate?
It's the need for a decent length dropper and a water bottle.
Range extender in place of water, for longer rides.... Got it makes total sense 😂
Yep, I've been saying to my riding buddies for a few years, that our bikes all look similar 🤪
As an engineer and motocross/emtb enthusiasts. I've been sitting on this thought for 3+ years now. The fsr platform with a top tube mounted shock with an extension really is the most efficient packaging on an emtb. As I've told people for years. If you want to build a proper emtb. Copy specialized... 😅 I believe that like motocross bikes. Emtb will settle on what works and refine the design.
Ha! If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Specialized must be permanently blushing!
@@MBRmagazine definitely, thanks for the content 🙏
You mean like a Commencal and other bike manufacturers that have been doing this for years?
This theory may pass as battery technology improves look at the New Orbea Rise with an option of a 630Wh battery for the majority of riders that purchase that bike that will be more than enough surely 🤷♂️ without getting the available range extender.
Yes, perhaps it will become less relevant with the next generation of batteries. Certainly, if they get close to 400wh/kg that will allow much more flexibility.
Hopefully you have had that lump on your neck checked by a doctor?
I had a lump like that....thank god I went straight to the doctors.....turned out I had second stage squamous cell carcinoma......6 weeks of radio and chemo, still here 12 years later , I had that at 36 years old.
So I guess we all have to go back and look at some of the first bikes like the Turbo Levo and SpectralON. 6 years later others are catching up 😊
If Fox has to be advertised so much it makes me think that the better shock and fork manufacturers get by with word of mouth and don't need to be pushed so hard. SR Suntour on Isted's bike is one example, Ohlins is another.
Are you at you go ride fox and then go ride rock shocks. I guarantee you’ll go right back to Fox.
@@EMTB17 I tried Mc Donalds then Burger King. Both employ saturation advertising. Now I go local with a more discerning pallet. I ride Sr Suntour I don't feel the need to change.
funny I thought the new Specialized looked like any other now
Pretty much all new e-bikes look like a specialized! LOL
E mountain bikes , yep. Sensible ebikes don't need slack head angles.
Are all ebikes more expensive than motorbikes 🙄
This is nothing new, I have said this for years, take the stickers off the vast majority of bikes and you wouldn't know which brand it was.
Cuz they are the same scammy bikes...
Well, then, I will definitely stop mountain biking because I would never buy a bike where the shock is hit to the top two. I’ve remember before, and the feedback that you get through the bike because of the position of the shock is absolutely horrid. Plus most single pivot or linkage driven single pivot should I say definitely done that way and those are not
