  • Day 2 of ‘The Great Britain XVI’ railtour would see steam return on the 1 in 37.7 Lickey incline for the second consecutive week. LMS Black fives 44871 and 45407 ‘The Lancashire fusilier’ working 1Z32 from Cheltenham Spa to Lancaster.
Again getting there early was a must as steam up the Lickey in the morning is rare and the weather was forecast to be clear and sunny. There was the usual risk of a unit going down at the same time, but a 3 minute late departure from Cheltenham Spa and the late running service train that proceeded the double header, meant we would get a clear view of the train digging into the 2 mile climb. Passing Bromsgrove 3 minutes late the train took just over 3 minutes to crest the summit at Blackwell just 1 minute late. Both engines going well and sounding great even with a push from the expected push from the Class 47.

Full chat, shame about the 47, be nice to see them working the Lickey on their own. Great video, many thanks 😊

The 47 is there to provide electrical power and air conditioning to the coaches

Beautiful. With those two power packs up front I can't see the point of that diesel haemorrhoid stuck to the trains backside. Could it not be surgically removed ?
