  • In a remote region of the Amazon live the last members of the Pirahã People. They have one of the strangest languages in the world: they have no words for colours and numbers, no concern for the past nor the future - making it one of the hottest debates ever among linguists.
    In the 1970’s, Daniel Everett first met the Pirahã as a Christian missionary exploring the Amazon basin. Having converted no one, Everett was soon much less interested in Jesus than the people with whom he was now living.
    For 30 years, he attempted to understand the near indecipherable Pirahã language - once described by the New Yorker as ‘a profusion of songbirds’, ‘melodic chattering’, and ‘barely discernible as speech’ - and re-invented himself as a linguist, grabbing headlines by challenging Noam Chomsky’s theory of universal grammar.

    When a man lived, study, speaks the language of one of the indigenous…yet his study and claims were rejected…now thats absurd even the so-called-famous linguist unable to do like Dan did!! Dan lived with the Piraha…he lived there for years!! Are those linguist did the same like Dan? I think Dan’s should be recognized for his amazing dedicated work!! Anyway Salute to SLICE for making this brilliant documentary and hope this documentary known to other linguists and intellectuals around the world and interested so they could work wif Dan and recognized his work!! Slice didn't make it, they bought the rights to show it under certain circumstances. Same with all of their other shows. I saw this on tv many years ago. I forget who made it, but it is an excellent doc. And everything else you said is dead on too.
      It's an outrage that Chomsky was allowed to slander Daniel that way. He's damn lucky he didn't get his ass sued off! He deserves even more than that. He did severe damage to Daniel's life and his carreer. And he was dead wrong! His theory is pure garbage! Everett never said a bad word about Chomsky, despite the fact that he so much deserved it! He didn't even realize at first what his writing about the Piraha would do.
      I respect Chomsky's views on many things. My dad knew him back in the 50s, so he must be about 100 now. But I will never forgive him for what he did to Daniel. I also think his stupid theory is a pile of BS. It's crazy. There is no way whatsoever to justify the theory, or the damage he has done in trying to prop it up. He is nothing but a bad person. Period.

      @@cattymajiv I don't believe in this conspiracy theory. Many things ruined Dan's live starting from religion, his wife, children who didn't speak with him for years, Piraha people, who tried to kill all his family and the life itself which is mostly evil intrinsically. As of Chomsky, I don't think he has such a political power. The fact that the team of the "programmers" and a linguist or linguists, who supported Dan's idea represents the same institution a part of which Chomsky is. Did Dan publish his work? Did he make all his knowledge publicly available? What was the response of the scientific community? There are other countries in the world apart from the USA and Brazil. Did Dan try to communicate his theory and knowledge to scientists from other countries, where Chomsky's political authority does not reach? Why didn't other scientists concentrate around his such an unusual discovery?
      I don't believe Chomsky ordered Brazilian authorities to forcefully intervene into Piraha life and methodically eliminate their culture.

Dan is quite impressive. Apart from speaking the Piraha language, he is also decent in Portuguese whilst the more established Noam is limited to English and elementary Hebrew. So much so that if someone else discovered another possibility, however probable, has to be wrong. Its like saying that I am the smartest person who knows everything and there is nothing else new to learn in this world and there is nothing you can say or teach me that will change my mind. I love the philosophy of living the present, not stressing about the past that cannot be changed and worrying about the future that has not happened. This is just my opinion. So, I would like to say a few things about what Mr.everett is talking about. so I'm not entirely sure if they mentioned this in the documentary, but, he's trying to argue that the pirahã language is non-recursive. I'm going to say a few things about why I think that what he's saying is complete bullshit. pirahã would be the first declared language to be "non-recursive", all other languages in the world have never been declared to be "non-recursive". Noam chomsky is one of the (if not the) most famous linguists in the world. The most notable theory he's come up with is universal grammar. but another thought/theory he has brought up is: recursivity is the cornerstone of language. I can provide you for evidence for this but it's a widely excepted fact that what he's saying is true. recursivity can be found in the following sentence: the dog's apple's tree's twig. the dog owns the apple the apple owns the tree the tree owns the twig and all of it together is the sentence. theoretically if you continued doing that infinitely it would make a completely grammatically correct sentence. that is recursivity, being able to put an infinite amount of arguments within an argument. all languages have recursivity... except, for pirahã. the one language in the world that doesn't have that. you would have to say something like: the dog that owns the apple that owns the tree that owns the twig. but even that would include recursivity. it's impossible to have a language without recursivity, and to you, somebody who doesn't know anything about linguistics, he surves as the galileo of linguistics, defying the so called rational thought and speaking out a truth only to be scilenced. the difference between galileo and Mr.everett is that Mr.everett is making a claim that is impossible to back up no matter how much studying and statistics he does.

Early in the morning small canoes with children would appear from nowhere in the jungle selling fruits and fish. Magic moments.. Dan is remarkable in being the only example I've ever heard of as a missionary who learned more and changed more from his time with his would-be converts than they wished to do as a result of knowing him. Yet his detractors accused him of racist research. And the government that refused him further contact with his friends whose culture he greatly respected, moved in to colonize them.

Religions do have redemption and from Dan to the Pirahã, although they would have no word for redemption, he's done that for them because they expressed their validation of wanting to see him, that has to be good enough. Indigenous around the world have their own sovereignty, their own rights, and freedoms to be On Native Land. People don't need a computer for that.

    Another captivating documentary by SLICE! It's fascinating to explore different cultures, and I truly appreciate how Daniel Everett approached the tribe with respect and openness, without imposing his beliefs on them. The Pirahã people offer valuable lessons for us all. However, I do have some concerns about the potential impact of concrete, which can promote the growth of black moulds in tropical climates, as well as the noise and pollution from diesel generators. I wonder if the tribe had the opportunity to provide input and explore alternative building materials and sustainable energy sources. It's crucial to consider their perspectives and find ways to minimize any potential negative effects.

    • @cattymajiv
      @cattymajiv Před 11 měsíci +4

      Those are very reasonable concerns, and it seems they were not fully informed or consulted. The Brazilian govt has always treated the indigenous people incredibly badly, and it just gets worse every year! It's a pity that more sustainable building practises were not used. But to everyone but them, the Piraha are just expendable. Who cares about them?
      It's criminal. I used to love to see docs and read about the uncontacted people of the Amazon. But the more I learn the more it hurts my heart. I can't do it anymore. I only watched this one because I've seen it twice before.
      It's heartbreaking what all of the South American govts do to all of the indigenous people of the Amazon basin. Another group called the Yanomamo, are also in a desperately bad state now. When I first read about them, they were so close to their roots and happy! It's such a tragedy that they are never given their rights! They are always just treated as animals. I often think of making the responsible person pay for it. But who is that person? I'm sure that I would only have 1 shot at it, so to speak.
