  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a vast, mineral rich country the size of Western Europe.
Alastair Leithead takes an epic journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of the Congo river to explore how history has shaped the Congo of today and uncover the lesser told stories of this beautiful, if troubled country.
In the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon he comes face to face with its gorillas and hunts with pygmies, he travels into the heart of the Ebola outbreak with United Nations peacekeepers, and explores the cobalt mines which will drive our electric cars of the future.

Watching this with tears in my eyes, why us? why does it have to be Africa the only continent in the world which consumes that which it does not produce and produces that which it does not consume? I weep for this great continent but in the words of Patrice Lumumba, the day will come when history will speak..Africa will write its own history, it will be a story of glory and dignity. To all my brothers and sisters, Alluta Continua.

A major problem, not only in Congo, but throughout Africa, is the politicians who are corrupted to the core. Most of the development aid the West sends to Africa goes into the pockets of these politicians. As a result, the infrastructure will not develop, there will be no foreign investments etc. It's sad that the ordinary people are suffering from this problem. And getting rid of corruption is very challenging which, unfortunately, doesn't look good for Congo and some other countries in Africa. I hope so much I'm wrong, but I'm afraid I'm not.

No matter what we've been through as a people, whether self inflicted or as a result of external pressure, it's clear that we are strong and capable of surviving and persevering under seemingly insurmountable odds. They key is to transition from survival to thriving without repeating historical errors and mirroring the atrocities of our oppressors. The latter is important because I'm convinced that some of us if given the power would do the same or worse to others per HUMAN nature. AFRICA UNITE

The first step is to get rid of corruption, or rather politicians who are corrupt to the core. This would be a good start.

@Truth is my sword 🗡️ YT How come it's 'wrong' if I say 'get rid of corruption & politicians who are corrupted to the core'? I got your point, but it's not just that simple. I was born and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela. So trust me when I say it's incredibly hard to change people's mindset when it comes to corruption. I'd love to hear your suggestions on how to make a change for this issue.

By the way, by saying all the problems are the fault of whites, you just prove that you are just another damn racist. Besides, I'm a South - American so skip the bullsht with me with the whites. Oh, how many Nobel Prizes have blacks received?
