Todd Said Something Rather Concerning - This Is Why I Taught Todd To Talk!

  • I just returned home from a 7-day business trip and one of the first things Todd tells me is Glamour’s back is not happy. I looked her over and her back does seem a little sensitive. She is not in distress but seems sore. I will get a vet appointment and get it checked out. Glamour is 15 years old and it may just be the effects of getting older. No matter what it is we will see what we can do so she is comfortable.
Todd is a 7-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 53 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

There have actually been official studies done on various species(birds are the first that come to mind) that show altruism with birds who had access to food making sure those who could not reach it stayed fed. They do better than people! Also teaching and communication is very common in the animal world. For example they now know that dolphins speak different dialects based on their pod and home location. Sometimes they even have get togethers with multiple pods all speaking different dialects, but still seem to understand each other and communicate just fine.

@@soltantio On top of what the other commenter said, there are certain things that don't need verbal communication. For example, we as humans know how a healthy, able-bodied human walks. If we see someone limping, we can know that they are either injured or disabled in some way even without exchanging a word or even making eye contact. Cats can see among other cats if they aren't putting as much weight on a certain limb, over- or under-grooming a certain area, or if they aren't moving normally, which typically indicates an injury.

@@lilythebassetpuppy Agree with you, though it's being said that about cats it's harder to see. Since I have had both cats and dogs, it may be easier with dogs, but when paying attention to a cat, one does learn to understand their individual quirks and see if sth is not ok. What exactly is not ok, may be hidden from us, but cats too are definitely not themselves if in pain etc. Stupid thing that the vet didn't believe me when I thought our senior had possible cancer or kidney issues, and then 2 months later she had to be put down for cancer. 😢 And yes, she was playful etc until her very last days, but other things told me long before that she is not ok. Then again, I don't think that she would have wanted treatment and it might not have prolonged her life so much - and her life quality should be most important, more than the longevity...I do hope and think that her life was mostly happy, but wonder what she would have told me if I would have had such buttons for her...she was such a clever girl, and very much a nurse cat to the whole family. Miss her.

@@lilythebassetpuppyI've had both dogs and cats, sick and healthy. They're different. Vets say it's harder to tell when a cat is sick or in pain because their instincts tell them to hide their pain and discomfort for as long as they can. That limit is going to be different for each cat, of course, so some will show it sooner than others. It's not just a matter of staying off your phone and monitoring your cat. Sometimes, you can pay attention to your cat all the time and not even own your phone, but the symptoms your cat shows are so few or non-existent, you don't know the problem. Sometimes, even vets miss what's wrong with the cat.

I feel like this could be kind of a historical event. It's just so amazing. It shows that not only can Todd communicate, but also that he's capable of talking about the needs of another cat, and about something that is really important and should be addressed. I just feel like that this whole interaction requires a pretty high level of brain development. I know other things have been noticed, like he plans his day ahead of time, likes to make appointments for certain events, can tell what time of day it is, and invents new toys. And he has shown empathy for Glamour and Paulie before. And I know that cats are very empathetic. But it still seems so amazing because Glamour really was hurt, and he alerted you about that immediately.

    1) Glamour bit him in the back-and he is not taking revenge by not telling, but tells dad about her discomfort. +100 for character.
    2) How does he know? He must watch her and determine from her behavior the discomfort. +100 for observation, +1000 for having a model of another cats inner state.

You raise an important point. It seems to me that when trying to increase communication with our companion animals by teaching them to use *our* language, we also need to be observant of and open to *their* natural means of communication. Our pets are communicating with us all the time and often we probably aren't catching the full context of what they are trying to tell us, although anyone who loves a pet knows that after awhile you both get to understand each other pretty well. Thus, if Todd's sentence using the buttons is important, so are the other cues he would naturally use to get his meaning across. It's tempting to want him to use buttons to confirm his Dad got it right, but maybe he doesn't think that's necessary if his affectionate caress was his reply. Not trying to lay down absolutes here, just speculating about the "mixed media" cats (and dogs) might choose to use to communicate.

    What a sweet brother!
My 15 year old has severe arthritis. He's doing very well with a monthly Solensia injection and daily steroids! It has made a HUGE improvement. He went from not being able to walk right to running and playing again.
I got my cats buttons. They have two so far. Their brother was able to answer yes and no questions before we got the buttons. Sadly, he got an aggressive and terminal cancer. He was able to plan his end of life care and make the important decisions that were right for him. He told us when he was ready and that he wanted it to be done at home, not the vet's office. That experience made me feel very motivated to give all of my babies the same level of autonomy. My goal is to add enough buttons for them to communicate basic needs, pain, yes, and no. So far, all three of my kitties will use their buttons!
