Jaime rips a phone book in half

- Jaime Sommers gets her kids respect by showing them what she could do to them if they dont cooperate! it works!!
If you are wondering how this was done, the phone book was baked in a oven untill it was brittle enough for Lindsay Wagner to tear it apart.
I'm 54 years old and I still remember this episode like it was yesterday. And I was absolutely crazy about Lindsay Wagner
I'm 54 as well and I remember this and a whole host of other shows in the mid to late 70's.
@@raymondkizer1216 Most TV shows back then were good, not like nowadays where you've only got maybe 4-5 shows that are good. Reality bullcrap television has taken over, what a shame.
I'm 47 and loved this show, plus here in Sydney we usually got your shows a bit later than you guys made them and then they'd re-run for a while. But as a kid in the 70s I looved this show and looved Bionic woman.
@@charlesparr3296 yes!
I'm 56, so I saw her first!
Of course, kids nowadays would ask, "What's a phone book?"
Yes, I was thinking that, today, she would have to rip someone's smartphone in half.
David Lafleche she would blow up their cell phones with her mind.
Kids nowadays would ask, "What's respect?"
@@stevenwatchorn9816 Lol!!!!
Also they will say "What's a CD?" since they download their music these days. I have nothing against it but it just takes too damned long to get the tunes I want
Jamie : "now, any questions?"
Student: " can I use the bathroom immediately?"
Looks like you already did
We need this kind of teacher nowadays
No we don't. We don't need teachers who demonstrate brute strength and implied threats to young children.
I do remember this episode, and even back then I realized 1 thing:
If you have just one bionic super arm and the other in normal it will not be able to keep the grasp of the book while the bionic one pulls it the other way.
Yes, well, the video clearly shows otherwise.
@@sgtkabukiman9411 that's because fiction doesn't care about details like this
I was about the same age as the children depicted in that classroom scene when I saw this episode the first time it aired. Today, over 40 years later, I can recall that scene in minute detail because of how shocking it was to me and my elementary school-aged brain. God bless Lindsay Wagner and her unforgettable performance as Jaime Sommers!!
And to think the children in this episode are pushing 50. Seems like yesterday.
Since I was about their age when this was on, and I am 56, I'd say they are more likely pushing 60!
I did watch the 6 Million Dollar Man, as well as, The Bionic Woman. The beginning of every episode of the 6 Million Dollar Man they show a plane crash (which looks like it's a military plane). This was supposed to be the Plane Crash which eventually created The 6 Million Dollar Man. There's a real Pilot in that footage & much to My amazement, this Pilot survived that horrific Crash. He was a Guest Speaker at My School in the 6th Grade. The point is that I was a huge FAN of BOTH Shows. I'm going 2 be 57 yrs old this year. So that comment about how old the students are in the video 2day are over 50 & closer to 60 yrs old. Lindsay Wagner is 70+ yrs old.
@@amyray63 I think it was one of those test models they used to experiment with back in the late 60s and early 70s. I'm 57 in 2021, but the 70s sometimes seem like only yesterday.
@@thefurrybastard1964 It may have been a test Model but it was a live Pilot testing it. Like I mentioned this real human Pilot was severely injured but mostly broken bones. No head or Major Organ damage. I thought that nobody could’ve survived that crash. It had to be before 08/1974. I moved from New York to Florida that year. The 6 Million Dollar Man (TV Series) was in its first or second Season at this point. But I remember that so many Elementary & Junior High School Kids (& Adults) were huge Fans. I, naturally hated Florida, so I remember this particular School Event quite well. I swear that I truly did NOT believe regular people didn’t actually live in Florida. I just thought that people who worked for The Kennedy Space Center or Disney World had to live there (I was only 13). When I got here I had never been out of New York so when we got to Central Florida and realized that the neighbors to the left were from Huntsville, Alabama & to the right, Lexington, Kentucky. We did NOT speak the same language.
I swear we didn’t understand each other in the slightest. “Y’ALL” just made no sense. We said, “YOUSE” (How Youse doin’?)..
When the Mother from Alabama told me to put something “UP”. I genuinely asked,”Up where?” She thought I was being disrespectful and called my Mom and she asked the same thing. So when the REAL PILOT FROM THE OPENING OF THE 6 Million Dollar Man came to our school standing tall and alive, I was impressed. I’m 57 years old now and I still don’t know what a Black Eyed Pea is; or Chicken Fried Steak! I’m not a fan of GRITS Either! But I’m still a Fan of Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner. She didn’t do much but I loved her in the Bionic Woman.
Now I’m waiting for the next Matrix movie to come out 2001..lol.
However, I have to say that Kate Beckinsale from The Underworld Movies fit and moved in in the Leather Suit much better than Trinity from the Matrix.
*raises hand
'Uh, Miss Sommers? May I be excused to the bathroom, please?
I didnt know she won an Emmy for her role but i agree she earned it! This scene stuck in my head all these years lol
I loved The Bionic Woman when I was a kid and still do. It says at the top of the page, if you are wondering how it was done, well I wasn't wondering how it was done, that just spoils the magic of the show.
I remember this episode! So glad I grew up in that era, when television was truly worth watching! Classic!
This is the one scene I have never forgotten!
Which season and which episode was this??
Much better then so called reality TV
@@YoYo_Ma me too my favorite scene sticks in my head forever
1st season, 1st episode
Jaime summers aka Lyndsey Wagner. My boyhood crush.
Mary Ann from Gilligan's island!
Barbara Eden from I dream of Jeannie.
Lynda Carter Wonder Women
Girlhood crush, too.
Man Of Beard I only wish that class could have been joined in by Lynda Carter and Erin Gray
I was 10 when this came out, and her point definitely stuck with me!
Thanks for the clip it is one of the best of the entire series.
As well as the Incredible Hulk and Charlies Angels, I loved watching the bionic woman and man when I was a kid. So glad there's videos up. I wished there were a lot more uploaded.
if making crossovers would have be a trend like know we would have had a crossover between Bionic people and the incredible Hulk
Damn that's a very beautiful woman
We need more teachers like this! Respect is no longer a part of the classroom, and needs to be re-instituted!!!
I love the sound of the phone book being torn apart! haha!
A spiritual sound? lol
Lindsay's incredible beauty rips your heart in two with the same force that Jaime tears that phone book.
I remember this episode! I was 9 years old! Loved this show as well as the Six Million Dollar Man!
Jaime's only bionic arm is her right, therefore, her left arm would not have the strength to hold on to the phone book while the right tears it in half. Regardless, she's a super babe. 😘🌹💜
Bionics machine can work but connected to flesh bad idea. Look at 6 million dollar man, in a cave during the quake, Steve stopped a huge bigger than himself. He would have been squished.
None of the bionic biomechanics make sense. Flesh and bone would be shattered and torn apart by the forces generated.
But hey, fond memories anyway, we all just said hell with it 👍🏼
that makes absolutely no sense. She would totally have the ability to rip the book with ease.
It's a fictional story , superman can't fly either
@@stuartboyd6340 well he can. You meant to say the comic character superman is not real. Agreed.
70s-80s were the best when it came to film and television.
Getting old sir?
best nickname ever
Sure - Back when a bionic woman would spend those millions of dollars on cleaning the house - wholesome womanly fun!
@@simonfrederiksen104 And keeping her yap shut when the men folk were talkin!

I remember watching that when I was young. She is a beautiful woman and a talented artist. I miss those times.
Jaime Sommers was the Buffy Summers of the 1970s. Lindsay Wagner was a real beauty in her day and one of my heroines as a young girl. Loved this show!
Gotta say, she doesn't exactly look like chopped liver these days - At the age of 69
I grew up watching this back in d 70's.. Cnt believe i still could feel the excitement i got back then nw..
"Electronically-enhanced ear"...IMHO, this series at least postulated the cochlear implant.
Zahim Islam I wonder how many people would say that this series partly inspired them to go into medicine and/or engineering
I though she was great actress and I loved her show.
Don't worry we have the technology to rebuild her but she will only run in slow motion
Good for you.
Imagine. All the information in all of the books in that room and on the campus could be found in a smart phone today.
Yes but this smart little gadget in our hands has made society so much lazier as a whole. If the entire infrastructure went down, hardly anyone would know how to open up a phone book and find basic information.
@@stacythomas7162 Amen sister!
I can't.
I still remember this episode... Love this
For weeks I kept asking my mom how did she do this? When your 4 seeing a thick phone book ripped in high by your hero is a big deal
❤ the 70's were cool !
My favorite scene from the entire series
I didn't see this scene, but it looks impressive.
I like this episode when Jaimie shows how she can rip up a phone book in front of her pupils
She has my upmost respect! ✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻
Idiot
My absolute favorite show as a child
Wow great sound effects. I loved tv in the 70s
Shanil... If u grew up back in those days.. U ll luv d feeling... No mobile, gadgets or any hi-tech stuff.. Just plain creativity n imaginations....
Bring back the 80's for the love of pete!!
Zahim Islam I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s - beautiful times
Zahim Islam , yes ! that is true , i grew up watching the edison twins , mc gyver , the six million dollar man , we never need those gadgets before and it increases our creativity and imagination !
...and lots of reading actual books, writing (no iPads) mailing letters, and lest we forget... The Pony Express!!
I'm just glad you're not over thinking it
Again proving you have to have even just a smidgen of fear to gain respect.. A delicate balance.
I was waiting for her to say: imagine if this is your head.
Jaime: You're gonna learn a little bit about respect.
Kids: Kuhl, destruction of school property.
Now, that is THE way to get the class's attention, rip an 800 page book in half in front of them.
Everybody remembers this scene. It never fades.
I remember the scene!! I was like yes!!! she's so strong ❤️
I woulda ran my ass tf out of that classroom!
t.co/8c7Wz7a4RD 26k range,
ole boi aint runnin no damn where in them church shoes ha!
Anyone remember in between the white pages and the yellow pages there was a chart with numerous calendars and you could calculate what day you were born on?
My fave episodes are Kill Oscar, Fembots In Vegas, Doomsday is Tomorrow and Deadly Ringer. There were so many. I liked when she was a cop, a flight attendant and Beauty Pageant Contestant. Nutty but I'd pretend to be bionic when I was a kid. My biggest wish was to be able to JUMP! LOL...
Actually, it isn't as far off as you might think: all her *left* arm has to do is brace the book down (as she does, against her legs) and have her *right* arm be the active force ripping the phonebook *upwards*, as it does in the demonstration. That is, if *both* arms were doing the ripping, the ripping-bias wouldn't go upward, bias right, as it does, but would split in half as a mid-point of *both* arms acting. A subtle distinction, but actually demonstrated correctly in the video above. ;)
Loved watching the bionic woman grow up.
That really got the students' attention
when you ain't gettin' your toes curled, but you try to take it out on the class....
The sound effects guy first job ever ?
bcherbs Echo canyon mean anything to you?
bcherbs lol
I think so... his next job was the sound of a paraplegic being pushed down a mine shaft...
She's having that " Not so fresh feeling time of the month moment" right now !😂
So many teenage boys at the time actually got excited by this scene.
Im 15 and i love classics and i bet there are others like me out there too.
Well, I never had a teacher rip a phone book in half. But I I remember in the 2nd grade I did once have a substitute teacher who started the class by slamming a huge dictionary down on his desk. It got everybody's attention, and I guess it established the fact that he wasn't there just to babysit.
Respect. So you can fear me.
I was in love with her when I was in elementary school. This brings it all back. What a total fox.
Beautiful !
The phone book was a paid actor.
now they got a super bionic ear implant that comeing out very soon this real bionic age is on it way
get 'em Jamie :) Loved her!
I WOULD'VE HAD NO PROBLEM RESPECTING MS. SOMMERS AT ALL.SHE WOULDN'T NEED TO TEAR THE PHONEBOOK IF I WAS TAKING HER CLASS.I WOULD RESPECT HER 100%.
I have always loved her voice
She'll tear a living child in half if she has to.
.... and of course her real arm was able to cope with the strength of her bionic arm! You have to wonder how Steve Austen was able to lift cars and jump 50 feet with bursting all his spinal discs.
Wow I used to have nightmares about this very scene, there is something so strange, uncomfortable and threatening. When I got sick I would have fever dreams about phone books being ripped. After all these years to see it again really kinda freaked me out. Thanks
Kids nowadays would say she threatened them, then touched their danger zone.
This was my favorite scene :-)
The boys cringing holding there nuts
That is exactly what is needed in real life.
she uses both hands when one hand is bionic
It's a little wrong that Jaime has to gain respect by showing physical strength and surely foolhardy for her to demonstrate her ability to a classroom full of kids. However, this scene is so iconic it's worth the inconsistency
"throwing a diva shade in a hard way"
Today she would tear google in halves. Need more teachers like her. She can learn me a thing or two. LOL!
This reminds me of the scene in *"Forbidden Planet"* where Capt. Adam's, and the 'Doc', are trying to get past, *"Robbie the Robot"* after said robot has, *rendered their "simple blasters", USELESS!*
'Doc', says to Captain Adam's, *"Isn't there a rule that prevents him from wringing our little necks for us?"*
Works a helluva lot better than Common Core.
I've always loved this scene.
She's a stunner
That's taught me a a lesson.
Billy Babu The story teller
@MsTexas73 You can. The trick is to bake the phone book in the oven at low temp so it dries out but doesn't burn. Then the phone book can be torn by a normal person. It's an old sideshow trick.
Huh, I hope she's as cool in Death Stranding
Does ripping a phone book in half with bare hands really sound like that.
We need teachers like this now
I WISH I could do rip a phonebook like that in front of my classes. Cuz I have some bad ass kids this year. The WORST group I've EVER had in my almost 15 years of teaching...and I've had some ROTTEN kids over the years...but not to this caliber. So something like this would certianly come in handy.
On a lighter note, I CAN write on the board fast (not as fast as Jaime of course), which always "amazes" the kids. *shrugs* When you've been doing it for so long, you don't think about it.
Anyone can rip a phone book in half using the good method, without bionic arms.
Given the implosion of land line phones, anyone can tear a phone book in half now.
Who needs guns in the classroom when you have the Bionic Woman?
Fascinating to me that of the entire Bionic Woman series, this is the one scene I remember the most.
Do the kids hear the ripping steel to? and echo.. or is it just us
I was able to rip apart a phone book years ago after I discovered what the trick was in doing it. It did not involve baking it. A guy with average strength can do it very easily.
True! Anyone feeding a 4 color offset press from a pallet will undoubtedly do it by mistake.
Yeah, I did it myself a couple of times, but then they changed the way they bound UK phone books, and they wouldn't "break" like the old ones.
I hope that got recycled! Lol
Nobody recycled anything in the '70s.
one of THE most classic scenes in the series! 71 YO
It's amazing how people gain interest in something right after its referenced in a game or movie :)
Has it been referenced? Because I notice this clip has been getting a lot of comments lately.
Brandon Michelle Yes, Lindsay Wagner is going to be in a game called Death Stranding.
picky ricky Hmm...interesting
Fine, Jamie, but that phone book is coming out of your paycheck.
As a little girl in the 70's I admired both Farrah and Lindsey for beauty, poise, and strength. I had a huge crush on Lee Majors. Awe, the good old days
Today you would have to tear an iphone in half.
@shwmehvn no you're wrong, thats a different episode, in season 2. the strenght in both arms is just a continutity error. Lisa Galloway didnt appear until the end of season 1.

An encyclopedia would have been more fitting for a classroom. It was revealed in the novels and the reunion movies that both Jaime and Steve also had their ribs and spines reinforced by bionics. This enabled them to lift heavy objects off the ground and withstand the shock of landing from a high distance.
If you were to ask me today if I remembered any scene at all from this series, it would be this one. I can't remember a single other scene.
