2 plus years later.... never met anyone with a flash. Skeletool still going strong!
SOG use to make pretty good stuff in the 90’s early 2000’s. Then they over branded and used cheap materials. Similar to what Gerber went through. I know Gerber makes some good stuff now and has rebounded a bit… it still hard for me to pay good money for a tool that has the Gerber name on it… centerdrive and fastball to name a couple.
Having to open the pliers wider is an inherent issue of having a larger mechanical advantage. I guess it comes down to wether you need high force or easy one handed use on large parts
SOG always does well in the visual appeal of there designs. That’s how they get you, the window shopping version of looking for a tool. Great vid as always.
I have had a Leatherman Skeletool CX for one and a half year now and it is an amazing EDC. Great video.

So far the ONLY multi-tool I’ve found that can stand alongside my Leatherman tools at all are the Victorinox SAKs, their Swiss Tool and Spirit Tools. Especially their Spirit Tool-X.

My Skeletool suits my personal needs best. The only multifunctional knives/tools I trust are Leatherman and Victorinox.

Love Leatherman Skeletool, but Sog Flash MT cost only 25 USD in China, but Leatherman is 78 USD, so the price is really a deal breaker
I love my Skeletool. I've had it for years now & take it Saltwater fishing with me in 2023. No rust, just works for me.
I bought Leatherman Skeletool 3 years ago and since that date I don't put on me my trousers without it. I have other multitools but this is by far the most EDC thing that exists on earth. It is lightweight, beautiful designed, very strong and durable, well-thought, and it has the most important things on it with which you help you to solve many things throughout the day. Highly recommend.
And a bottle opener. Don't leave home without it.

By far, most of the Phillips screws encountered in the wild are #2 Phillips. Nearly every screw on a desktop PC is a #2, for example. Even screws that are overall very small commonly have a full size #2 head. That SOG Phillips looked like a #0. As you said, useful for working on your wristwatch, but that’s about it. Should come with a jeweler’s loupe.
SOG has been slowly sliding down hill for over a decade now. It's really starting to show in the product line. Cut corners and jack the price.
I feel they were garbage about five years ago, then two years ago they really started to turn themselves around in most areas particularly in pocket knives and fixed blades. We’ll see what happens now that they have been bought out by GSM.

Got my skeletool CX (154CM version) based on your review on 2016 (?) or so.. Hasn't disappointed me so far. Even after 6 years of EDC, the bits stay snugly in their place when i use them. It's an excellent lightweight mutlitool and i cannot see it being replaced by anything in the market anytime soon.
Leatherman truly hit it out of the park with the Skeletool. Multi-tool functionality in a pocket knife form factor.

I own the power pint and the flash mt. The opening ratios of the pliers were completely different so i agree on that part. Which is why I do not use the flash mt.
The SOG PowerPint opens a bit wider, but it’s lacking a single-hand blade and deep carry clip. But it’s a good option, if you want to add decent pliers to your favorite edc blade (I keep it in the bottom of my pocket, along with a victorinox compact for the nice scissors.)
I have been carrying a powerpint for a while now and it's my favorite multitool. Thought it was junk the first time I held it, mainly due to the sharp machine edges and rough finish. After breaking it in, it's become a gem.
Love my skeletons. I see now need to change it. Have if for years.
Is the overall build quality better on the skeletool than the sog?
Just ordered a flash Mt. I want something that is comfortable to carry in my pocket vs the Gerber Center drive that I just got (and it seems a bit bulky for pocket carry..) I like the simplicity of the SOG Flash MT. Good pliers and flat head/Philips head screw driver plus a really nice blade.
I was about to purchase this tool. Im glad for this review before I dropped the $.

Good review 👍 I was leaning towards the Sog but you confirmed what I thought about the Phillips being too small. I have the Sog Powerpint and it is almost perfect bar the Phillips head being too small.
One note on the design of the compound leverage. If you need to grab something bigger, just reverse the grip. You show the configuration I am talking about at 2:33 in the video.
SOG now has garbage warranty ever since selling to GSM Outdoors. I would take the Leatherman.
Never had an issue with my SOG Power Access but its the only Sog multitool I've ever gotten. Not a fan of how wide I have to open it to get some nuts.

Had the MT for about a week now. Rides in the pocket like a folding knife with a lot more functionality when you need it. Sub 2.5 blade let's you take it more places. Plays it's role well and doesn't need to be clipped next your phone on your braided leather belt.

As an update, I just carried and used it today so still all good. Assisted open is a bit rigid like everyone says though.

I love my flat mt! I would say if your more focused on the knife with the added bonus of pliers and screwdriver I'd go with the sog🤷🏽♂️ but skeletool is a superior plier imo🤙🏽
Their knives are AMAZING compared to 4 years ago, multi-tools still have a way to go in the realm of QC, but i like the design and materials of this. 2/3 of the way there.
Recommendation on something similar to the skeletool, but with a good pocket clip? I like it for work but I find it falls out of doesn't stay in place.

@@gideonstactical Solves the strict countries/travel/gov building/nanny state or cruise issue to boot - just remove the blade (easy) while still having a strap and cord cutter/pry/package opener hook* and all the other tools.
Havlon Evolve is good for same - think "bladeless skeletool" - pop of blade and the fretful chillax and you stay multipowered with emergency cutting ability!
SOG has a couple of OK products. A lot of their multi-tools are poorly designed to the point of being potentially dangerous for the user.
It’s more about production rather than design. The design is really great compared to a skeletool (talking as an industrial designer myself), but how they produced it it’s extremely garbage. Same goes for Gerber. They have a great design team, but bad production. Leatherman goes the other way around. Plain, trash design (you can say that the surge is great but has so many flaws in its design), but decent production.
Something they should all aspire to is victorinox I think. It’s the only decent brand we have as far as multitools goes. They have just the problem of OHO which they didn’t fix with the latest release from my point of view, but as far as everything else goes, they are the major league, SOG, Gerber and Leatherman are Childs play for now. We will see in the next decade what will happen, maybe China will take over the market as they already did with the knife one.
I wouldn’t be surprised. They have great design team and production team.
@@clintwestwood3539 I've seen some of their multitools where the knife blade locking mechanism is very difficult to manage and it appears by design and not a QC issue. It was a design issue on their tomahawks to secure the head to the handle with a screw and I had one break on me at an indoor ax throwing place once.

This could've been a real skeletool competitor and even "destroyer", however it looks like SOG, Gerber and Leatherman, since 2003, are working for the "just good enough" and not for the best they can obtain, both design and production.
It's really a pity. I hope they get their heads out of their asses when China starts releasing some competitors. They already have better micarta (QSP)/blades (Ganzo/CIVIVI/WEknives) for the price, it won't be long before we see them releasing top tier MT too. That's the harsh truth.

thats a bummer, this thing looked like it had potential. I'm still pretty tempted to get a PowerPint...the one thing holding me back is the small phillips on that as well. 90% of screws in the us (totally made up percentage by me) are #2 phillips, why would they make something with a #1?

Gerber makes some nice multi tools. I would like to see you take some Gerber multi tools and some Leatherman tools and compare them side to side since obviously sog sucks I have some nice Gerber ones that I absolutely love.

The small screwdriver is actually a plus for using this in a bike tool kit. Set screws on derailleurs have tiny heads. I have to carry a biketool multitool in addition that has larger screwdriver heads on it. Really what I need is a knife, wirecutter, and a pliers. The one thing I hate about the skeletool is the carabiner. It makes it too long for my tool kit bag and I have 0 use for it. If I ever buy another one, I am going to grind off the carabiner and then it will also weigh less than 5 oz :) Someone stole one off my bikepacking rig last week, so I bought the Flash MT to replace it.
A dedicated bike tool is usually better for use on a bike. I have an old crank brothers one that has always been excellent

I love your videos and I absolutely agree with your review. I have owned Gerber, Leatherman and SOG multitools. SOG are total garbage. Gerber are a little better, but I would put my Leatherman Rebar up against any Gerber or SOG and would win everytime.
As much as I want the multi tool world to keep getting better one or two tools aren’t going to change the world. Plus you need a whole line up small mem size and large

I recommend it. I love mine mostly for its multiple carry options - in a pocket, in a sheath, clipped to a belt loop or to a backpack and the list goes on!
Most of SOG tools are made in China which is why Leatherman will always have a huge advantage over them from my perspective.

I've only owned one SOG and in my opinion, the wobblily tools made it dangerous and I had occasions when the knife and screwdrivers moved whilst in use, causing me to slip. I never injured myself but I don't trust them. No point in having a tool you don't trust. Over the years I've had a range of different brand multitools and I always end up back at Leatherman. In my opinion they can't be beat for the price, tool sets, warranty and construction. My favourite multitool is the Victorinox Swiss Tool BS but I acknowledge the cost is expensive compared to similar styles and it is heavy.
I actually had a One SOG multi tools until some shit bag broke into my car and stole my entire bag. It was pretty nice, got the Job done. But Ever since then I’ve been rebuying & building my kit and it’s all Leatherman. I think if SOG was named Daisy’s knives or similar no one would give a damn…Were all just suckers for the SOG warriors from the 70s and it’s just great branding in my humble opinion. I just recently bought a Skeletool & a Wave + Sorry SOG. - great review as always bro.

I had me a SOG power lock throughout my time in the Navy and I loved it. It served me well. However, I gave it to my dad when I got my hands on the leatherman signal.
Now I carry the surge and I don’t think I’ll ever swap that bad boy out.
i cant comment to the quality, but as far as the rest it easily beats Leatherman to me, better quality steel, more durable blade design, center driver instead of awkward Leatherman one, takes generic bit instead of flat ones, you say its too small but i can replace it with a better bit, the pliers dont need to open that much, im hardly going to use them for something big, better to have strong grip on small stuff... real shame you say it has blade wobble tho, that kills it for me

When I first got into knives and such I was a big fan of SOG. Not so much anymore.
I don’t buy SOG because their customer service blows and I quit buying Leatherman because they became a clone company. Not an issue though because my Victorinox Swiss Tool smokes them both in quality

As I get older I enjoy non assisted blade deployment. Less complicated.
The riveted in knife detent spring snapped on mine within months making this tool INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS TO HANDLE. It required me to disassemble and remove the flash deploy spring and ALWAYS use the blade lock switch to avoid stabbing my palm. Fuck SOG, the tool is nice but not worth the cost of an ER visit

SOG makes visually appealing gear (for the most part) but the quality and such is just not there. Not to mention they’ve strayed a bit from what the brand is supposed to represent.
Sad, ever since 2020 SOG has turned around and has been knocking it out of the park with their take on axis lock knives but everyone stumbles eventually.

What is sooo annoying is that the PowerPint has perfect gear ratio...no idea why others don't have it. I think yours has something wrong with the blade for sure.

I don't understand the love of the leatherman. I had one for over a year and carried it every day. In theory it is the perfect tool. The exact tool selection I need, and the size. But every bit of it is mediocre. The blade action is stiff and not quick deployable with budget steel. You can't get leverage with the pliers and if you slip off the bolt you pinch the shit out of your palm. So anything over a 10mm bolt that has any kind of torque on it? forget about it. And the screw driver is incredibly awkward to use and makes it very difficult to apply force while turning without it either collapsing or getting a solid grip when it's fully extended.
I guess they have done this design the best and it's a needed/wanted feature set. But, that doesn't make it good. I was hoping this was the answer but I guess not. it would have been if they has used 1/4" bits. What a waste.
I like the pliers better on the SOG than the skeletool.
I wish more companies made multi tools that had assisted openings. I think the SOG was a better tool in theory, but executed poorly. The small bit driver is a waste.
Leatherman Skeletool is WAY over priced in Australia - that said Leatherman set the standard for multitool's, I have heard good things about the Victorinox Spirit but can't afford one, have a juice kf4, sidekick, wave and surge in Leatherman and a Victorinox Tinker which is a great tool.
So it's a prettier Reactor where they didn't fix any of the issues.

Sog reactor rc1001 it better SOG Flash MT in almost same price it only $40 in Thailand and $50 for sog reactor rc1001 Damascus steel but leatherman skeletool damascus is just a color leatherman it the legend but Sog just the rookie on multitool market.

There is no scenario in which SOG puts anyone under. I can’t speak for their current material because I don’t buy that brand, but their stuff was garbage for many years. They will never be able to build their reputation enough to really compete with the big boys. I class them about the same as MTech. No way will I ever buy from them again.
SOG was bad 5 years ago but no fucking way are they the same level as Mtech. They’re better than Schrade, Non-US Gerber, and a lot of Kershaw and CRKT.

@@jonathancupp3686 are you completely unaware of their new line-up since 2019? Their base material is D2, they have several higher-end models in S35VN and CTS-XHP. They’re starting to offer American manufactured knives. Their new automatic series has an ingenious integrated safety that doesn’t add an extra step to deploying the blade. They’re coming out with a Bugout competitor that looks very promising.
Pre-2018 SOG was just a step above gas-station quality, sure.
But educate yourself before saying they’re still in that realm in the present day. They’ve done a ton of work to improve.

While the description says "tool only" it does come with one each of a bi-metal czcams.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI and HCS blade plus an adaptor plate for non-DeWalt blades. Wish I had known that before I bought the blade kit, but oh well. Since I already have a DeWalt drill, charger and batteries there was no need to buy more of those so this was a great deal.There is one other consideration. DeWalt does't sell the depth guide separately so you need to buy the three parts which make it up -- the N275350 block assy, the N275341 metal rod and the N278801 knob. Amazon does sell all three.
i do own the powepint and it's definitely solid as a EDC....but would be lovely if Leatherman would make something similar at a similar price....but I always wonder why Leatherman, Gerber or SOG doesn't put a Saw on their smaller multi tools?
