  • Scale: The Search for Simplicity and Unity in the Complexity of Life, from Cells to Cities, Companies to Ecosystems, Milliseconds to Millennia
    Dr. Geoffrey West is a theoretical physicist whose primary interests have been in fundamental questions in physics, especially those concerning the elementary particles, their interactions and cosmological implications.
    His long-term fascination in general scaling phenomena evolved into a highly productive collaboration on the origin of universal scaling laws that pervade biology from the molecular genomic scale up through mitochondria and cells to whole organisms and ecosystems. His talk and his book involve the extension of these ideas to understand quantitatively the structure and dynamics of social organizations, such as cities and corporations, including the relationships between economies of scale, growth, innovation and wealth creation and their implications for long-term survivability and sustainability.

    Videographer: The speaker's slides are at least as important to see as his attractive persona. Please spend more time on the slides that he is referencing. Watch, where the eyes of his seated audience are directed most of the time and you'll see that they are usually looking at his slides as he speaks. Ideally, you could put his person in an inset and let the slides be preeminent. Thanks for an otherwise good presentation.

    Regarding the 15 percent excess rate or the 85 percent number in cities: The square root of 4/3 is 1.1547 , and sqrt(4/3) is 0.866. Coincidence?

    The Great Reset : You will own nothing and you will be happy. Too much money produces stagnation. If system takes away comfort and unnecessary extra money from people we may witness new growth.
    To relieve complacency system must be reset and then people become creative again.

    Dude, you are a systems theorist whats all this theoretical physics junk? Pick a side man. Complex adaptive systems, theoretical physics? Stop confusing people. Get a new belt while your at it. Keep biology out of your mouth.

    • @Tritdry
      @Tritdry Před 6 lety +6

      Theoretical physics junk? He was trained and practised as a theoretical physicist. Then he took that training and practice, collaborated with other people, biologists, economics etc., and what you hear is the result of this collaboration. "Keep biology out of your mouth", he has highly cited papers in biological journals, including papers in Nature and Science..

    • @osyfuture2646
      @osyfuture2646 Před 6 lety

      Tristan Dry you are right... However, physics involves linear causality and excludes the observer. Biology involves circular causality and includes the effect of making observations (no, not heisenberg). The scaling principle can, will break down at the socio-economic level simply by observing the scaling principle. See George Soros or Second Order Cybernetics.

    • @Tritdry
      @Tritdry Před 6 lety +2

      OS:y FUTURE what is the difference between linear causality and circular causality. how do physicists not make the same sort of observations that biologists do? "scaling breaks down when you observe the scaling principle"? what the hell is that supposed to mean?
