    I kid you not, when Geoff said that "all of CZcams is waiving at you", I was mid text and as I looked up from my phone, he points to the camera and says "wave at them", as if addressing me, which really freaked me out, so I waved for fear of him showing up at my house and making me wave to them in apology.

    The scenery is incredible. So beautiful. I remember taking my first holiday on my own as an adult nearly thirty years ago. I took the train from London to Edinburgh. The same type of scenery. I was looking out the window and saw a small, red fox running through a field. One of the happiest moments of my life.

    I love the Borders Line! Having grown up in Tweedbank and moved away it's great for travelling down to visit family. I feel it's also opened up parts of the Borders from a rural area with a couple of bigger towns to Edinburgh (and beyond) taking out the awful hour and a half bus journey. All be it there are a few downfalls but just short of 2 years on it's unbelievable that the service has only existed that long and the wee village of my childhood has a railway connection, still gets me every time!

    The line near me that would REALLY bring in tourism is the line that ran from Penrith - Keswick (right in the middle of the Lake District) and then finishing at Whitehaven. All the bridges & platforms still remain. Its currently a cycle path, but is never busy.

    • @Bob_Burton
      @Bob_Burton Před 7 lety +3

      I used the line from Penrith as far as Braithwaite and back several times back in the 1960s getting to and from the school camp site and always enjoyed it. I looked forward to using it again a few years ago only to find it closed.
      Such a shame.

    • @jonathancook4022
      @jonathancook4022 Před 7 lety +1

      @ naijitom - it was planned (back in the 1800's) to extend the current Oxenholme-Winderemere line to Grasmere, possibly even up to Keswick with the aid of rack-pinion rails, but obviously this was at a cost that was too great. Now, with all the houses in and around winderemere and amble-side, such a scheme would be impossible. The only way would be to cross lake winderemere (a huge feat) and go up the west side. This is a real shame because the lakes is super-busy this time of year and the new status will only make things worse on the roads. Only last week I spent an entire hour in one massive, slow moving traffic jam from Amble side to Winder mere. Thats a distance of around 5 miles or less!

    Lines being re-opened is always great to see. This needs to happen in Lincolnshire, aswell as more frequent services. In most parts of the county, you either have no train line at all, or you have a station that has infrequent services.

    Hi. I am loving the vlogs so much guys. My favs so far are the Cumbrian Coast, The Cambrian Coast, Porthmadog to Conwy via steam to Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Conwy Valley Line. I visited Conwy castle as a child and I had a marvellous Owain Glyndwr t-shirt from the castle gift shop. But the castle was so epically awesome as I recall when was 8 now 30. Personally Caernarfon is my favourite, which as you know can be reached by taking the Welsh Highland railway also from Porthmadog. Also North Berwick and the Boarders too which I would love to do and see some if the famous boarder Abbey like Melrose and Dryburgh. I once visited North Berwick and went to the National Seabird Centre on a birthday trip with my Dad. Seeing the Eider ducks diving into the water of the harbour for food was really lovely.
    Prepare yourself for the majesty of the great ol' Highlands. Vast skies, epic mountains and some of the most stunning coastal railway sections in the world let alone the country. I did the West Highland line to Mallaig one way and then Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness with my Mum a wee while back. Even bought a souvenir Kyle Line t-shirt. My favourite station might have to be Corrour, gosh is it remote. Brings a whole new meaning to the word. And the coast around Lochailort to Morar and Kyle of Lochalsh to Duirinish maybe Duncraig is mind blowing. Good wishes on completing your adventures.

    The random North Berwick train times are a consequence of the busy East Coast Mainline. It's very tight to fit all the express trains, freight and local stopping services in. Ultimately, it's the stoppers that give and run to an erratic timetable.
    Scotrail's generally pretty good at running a regular service in the Central Belt otherwise.

    Watching this particular video made me think of the closed line near me that I'm convinced would be just as popular as the one at Tweedbank. Its the old line between Scarborough and Whitby which is now called the Cinder Track. Nearly all of the track bed is still there even a viaduct at the Whitby end.Its now used extensively by walkers and cyclists and very scenic running along the coast. The main problem is at the Scarborough end where the line ends in a Sainsbury car park, so maybe a new station could be built there! Who knows, it would certainly be a money spinner.

      Scottish notes don't have the same value as English notes, in the UK, in reality. They are not legal tender in England. Here in Blackpool, it's actually quite hard getting rid of Scottish notes. There is no obligation for UK shops to accept Scottish or NI notes, and most don't. UK banks will exchange them for English notes, in the limit, if you can't pass them on to some poor unsuspecting dupe, who doesn't know better, but they are a right royal pain in the backside...

    I actually went up to Edinburgh on 6th September 2015, the first day of public operation of the Borders Railway, met up with some friends, and rode the first train out of Edinburgh Waverley that morning. There was an earlier departure from the Tweedbank end, so I can't claim to have ridden the VERY first train on the reopened line, and there were some private runs for invited guests the previous day, but it's nice to have played a small part as a passenger in the opening of the line. (Services as far as Craig R....sorry I mean Newcraighall had already stated some years earlier, about 2003 I think). I hope they extend it further in the near future, it'd be great to see it reopened right through to Carlisle in my lifetime!! I'd also like to see Uckfield-Lewes reopened, which is only about 6 miles.

    You know what's it called when trains always leave at the same minute past the hour? That's an integrated clock-face or cyclic timetable and it's what makes e.g. the Swiss railway such a success.

    • @SimonS44
      @SimonS44 Před 7 lety

      I feel so lucky now that I also live in place with an integrated timetable, although ours does not include buses, for the regional trains it's pretty good. I'm from NRW in Germany.

    So the original route was from Edinburgh Waverly to Carlisle Citadel. They definitely should reopen the line. First, it would connect more lovely castles to the railway. More tourism. And a lot of town would get connected again. Also it is a shortcut from the Eastside to the West. Approx 156 to 204 km (97 to 127 miles).

    I guess you never crossed the Forth bridge? The stations at either end were "visited", but I guess you took the long way around to visit the intervening stations which you would have missed by crossing the bridge.

    According to realtimetrains there's a couple of services each day which are class 158 diesels instead of the class 380 electrics, so they leave about 5 minutes earlier to get into Waverley at the same time.

      That's because ScotRail often likes to combine two routes into one train (e.g. Ayr-Glasgow-Edinburgh at peak times). It's a good idea in theory, but when you combine an electric route with a diesel route, it creates a timetabling mess like this 😕

    • @mboothy
      @mboothy Před 7 lety

      Well the two I saw were at around 12 and 3pm so not peak, But I assume once all the 385s are in services there will be no diesels on the line.

    Last one for today - I've just had a look at the North Berwick departures Mon - Fri, and yes it's clockface at 27 past each hour 09:27 - 13:27 EXCEPT the 12:20, then it's 14:29, 15:22 and 16:25 !!. It must be some operational constraint feeding onto the main line between fast trains surely, as you say it's far more desirable to have a set departure time each hour for an hourly service.
    Still at least it happened on that line, and not in the Highlands, where you've got only 4 or 5 trains a day on some lines, that would'be catastrophic to your plans if you miss one of those!

    I'm only just now to your adventures and I'm loving the videos. 1 wee question though, you didn't seem to document any of the stations between Waverley and Tweedbank. Why was that? I live in one of the villages the Borders line serves and this area is full of history, and a couple of castles (although you did film Borthwick). I know you like all the local history stuff so I was a bit surprised not to see any mention other than Borthwick.
    Love the videos though, can't believe I'm so late to the party.

    Agree there Geoff with the mins past issue with off-peak services. As you'll found out that daftness that is on Monday to Friday and Saturday with a min here and there for 'pathing/padding' is daft when a standard pattern timetable can run largely for the majority of the day Monday to Saturday - but planners are the god and they know best

    The castle at 9:35 is Borthwick Castle. I can hear someone in the background on the train telling some of its history but not clearly enough. Mary Queen of Scots was besieged there twice and escaped the second time by disguising herself as a page. It's now a hotel and conference center and I stayed there way back in 1981 and recognized the place immediately. Come on, if you're going to do All the Castles, do All the Castles. Vicki needs to make Geoff stop the train to get in some history. He must think this is a documentary about railroads.😉
