  • It's Tuesday 20th June, and on another hot day in England, we catch up on the Bicester VIllage branch, and then get the one-a-day "Finstock Flyer", take a walk through the countryside to get to Combe station, and then head west to Great Malvern and Hereford, except that things once again did not run smoothly ...
    Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.c... (other stores are available....)
    Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations....
    ROUTE: London Paddington - Hayes & Harlington - Oxford - Bicester Village - Oxford - (Combe) - Worcester Shrub Hill - Worcester Foregate Street - Malvern Link - Hereford
    NOTE: We are using standard class All Line Rover tickets for our journey, but GWR kindly upgraded us to first class for this train -
    thank you!

      That's Worcester's one-way system for you. The coach could not continue westerly down Lowesmoor as that route is restricted so had to turn south, at Aldi, towards St. Martins Gate, passing Asda, before reaching the City Walls Road and turning north again. Given the state of the city's traffic it is often quicker to walk, especially in 'rush hour'. The route does not pass the Cathedral.

    I found your videos by chance and I'm hooked. They're brilliant, beautifully presented by you both and wonderfully produced.
    I'm originally from Sussex and moved over to Ireland in 2008. Now, possibly 'too much information' here but I watch these regularly, on a Tablet, whilst soaking in a late night bath in County Tipperary: bliss!
    As a kid growing up in Hastings - 60's and 70's - I would often go down to St.Leonards Warrior Square station just to 'be' there and enjoy the feel of the railway. It's hard to put into words - my wife is very understanding - but you'll know what I mean of course. Used to wait for the unique Thumper diesel multiple units to enter the tunnels, one at each end of the platform. Specific narrow stock for the narrow tunnels; that's another story.
    The rail network is small here and mostly single track. However, there's still a real branch line way of thinking. Our local trip from Birdhill to Limerick for example. Two trains a day and if you're running a little late you can often ring Birdhill, speak to the Station Master come Ticket Collector come Signalman, and he'll (theres just him) hold the train for you as long as it's just a few minutes.
    A bit different to my old commute of Horsham to Gatwick :-)
    Love these videos, love your Underground ones too.
    Thanks for making them!
    Now, where's my plastic duck?

  • @johnhaines4163
    @johnhaines4163 Před 7 lety +1

    Don't know what the trouble with the points would have been but continuous welded rail, although providing a much smoother ride, makes the tracks much more vulnerable to buckling than the old fish plate jointed short sections of rail. The tendency to sideways buckling is combated by heaping the ballast at the ends of the sleepers to provide resistance to sideways movement. If that heaping up is reduced, possibly because of old ballast spreading or work adjacent to the track, the resistance is reduced. This often leads to the imposition of speed limits in hot weather (so a derailment is less serious). At worst, major track buckling can occur and stop trains entirely.

    • @cephalopod7300
      @cephalopod7300 Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the info. Do the rails 'unbuckle' straight again when the whether cools, and the sleepers get dragged back into place by thermal contraction of the rails, or does this have to be sorted out manually when it happens?
      And the range of temperatures in the UK is well short of what some parts of the world experience especially in the interior of continents. Do these places not use continuous welded rail or is some different solution used? I would guess high speed lines especially need continuous rails, but how do they avoid buckling in the heat? Just from better piling up of ballast?

    • @johnhaines4163
      @johnhaines4163 Před 2 lety +1

      @@cephalopod7300 Even if the rails straighten out a bit when it cools, there is no guarantee that this would be adequate. Also, the fact that they buckled means that the ballast needed to be topped up so re-alignment and more ballast is required. These days this is all handled by large machines operating overnight.
      As for other countries; you're right in identifying temperature range as the issue, not just high (or low) extremes. I don't have experience of what's done. I have seen rails painted white but I doubt that has much effect.
      I have travelled on the suburban railway in Yangon. Rails were all over the place, the trains travel slowly.

    I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia, and it's not uncommon to have 35-40 degree days during summer, but more uncommon are days from 40-45 degrees, and to top all that we did have a 4 day streak in 2009 where temperatures reached 45-47 degrees. Yes, Victorians do get these heat issues and our trains do have problems in this heat also.

    The Railway Magazine reported on the opening of the Bicester Chord saying that it was the first brand new route between London and another UK major city since 1899 when the Great Central opened. The following month they actually had an entry in the 'Corrections and Clarifications' section about the article, because apparently they'd incorrectly said that Oxford would be unique in having trains to London departing in both directions, when Edinburgh also does, as do quite a few places in Kent

    Bicester Village used to be called Bicester Town, a one platform station that marked the end of the line for passenger services that used to be serviced by a two car Turbo with First Great Western. The trip used to take about 25 minutes and only stopped at Islip.

      @Tevildo Před 7 lety

      Ahh, I remember when it was NSE Class 121s, before Islip was reopened, and it was a long walk from the station to any non-residential properties. I see from the video that the double-tracking has been restored - how far towards Calvert have they taken the double-tracking?

    • @Bullmannumber4
      @Bullmannumber4 Před 7 lety

      As far as I'm aware it's still single track between Bicester and Calvert.

    12:10 The Soviet Union could build a set of points that could work in extreme temperatures: parts of Russia can get as cold as -40 degrees C in winter and has hot as +40 degrees C in summer (I'm going by where my wife's from, so other places will have bigger differences), and their points still work.

    • @cephalopod7300
      @cephalopod7300 Před 2 lety

      These things are all a question of budget and normal operating range aren't they? It's certainly possible to build the railways for very hot or very cold temperatures, but if it works most of the time and would add significantly to the cost to cover the extremes in any particular place that is less likely to happen. Although just like the way a lot of the UK grinds to a halt in response to small amounts of snow, it is frustrating when it happens.

They laid a special bus on for us to Cheltenham Spa where we got a train back to Bristol. (we used a bus to get from Evesham to Stratford as of course the line was closed in the 60's)
