Vicki's announcement sounded so much like the official automated system I'm now thinking she moonlights as the announcements lady for Network Rail!
there are several different automated announcement voices on the network. The most common I believe is called "Anne", who does the announcements at stations like Kings Cross and sounds really posh. Theres also the South West Trains automated announcement lady who's even more posh.
South West Trains automated announcements are done by Celia Drummond, who also does the Northern Line.
Tina Onions - was a Marshall once. I was surprised too when I heard her in my student days when I regularly used Leeds station to get to and from University. I think it's mainly the stations directly managed by Network Rail that use her voice.
DarthJedi2005remixes I believe that every station in France uses the same voice.
TRiG (Ireland) In France, they also have a pre-announcement "jingle" which has changed a few times over the years, the current one someone made into a proper song and tried to release it as a single!! I don't know how successful it was...???
Probably my favourite episode to date. Loved it when Vicki said "thank you awfully" in the movie segment. And she was very good at the announcement. And finally... Vicki is always chirpie.
That was just hilarious! Geoff's ridiculous gurning for the camera had me in stitches. Noel Coward would be so proud!
Possibly the best episode yet. Vicki: great announcing, skipping in Skipton and the freeze frame Eric and Ernie moment. The Brief Encounter remake was also superb.
Brief Encounter was a brilliant film, particularly the ending where Richard Dreyfuss goes into the mothership.
The Canal under Leeds is actually the River Aire however if you followed the river about 100 yards down stream you'd come across the end of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
Vicki's Received Pronounciation was absolutely spiffing. :-)
That brief encounter sketch IS the most charming, romantic, nostalgic bit of video on CZcams. Love it! Your a true gent Geoff! :D
Though some will tell you RP stands for 'Received Pronunciation', we know it really stands for 'Reet Proper', Keith Lee told me that
as far as quaint goes, the Isle of Man railways are off the charts
Well done Vicki for the station announcement; it sounded appropriately professional.
We spent a week on the Isle of Man; It's got lots of railways and everso nearly did All The IoM stations - managed the Steam Railway, Electric Tram, Mountain Railway, Horse Tram, Laxey Mines Railway & Groudle Glen Railway. Sadly we couldn't get to the Crogga Valley or the Curraghs Wildlife Park, both minature. You'll have to go.
Gosh the Dark Arches in Leeds has gone up in the world a bit! When I was a lad, those tunnels under the station, with the River Aire running underneath, were not the place you'd want to venture even during the day, let alone at night. When I was last there, last year, they didn't have the multi-coloured lighting, and the south entrance hadn't quite opened.
the episode where Vicki shows just how awesome she is
Enjoyed the "Brief Encounter" tribute!! Those Pendolinos rushing around in the black and white footage made me really laugh as well!!
I've been to the Isle of Man a few times, most recently last year. Well worth a visit, especially if you haven't been before. Yes, they have their own money, but UK English and Scottish notes and coins are also accepted everywhere on the island. Just don't bring any island notes or coinage back with you (other than as a souvenir) as you won't be able to spend them here!!
You're quite right. I live in Leeds and I had no idea that entrance was there.
I love these two, always seem to encounter nice people wherever they go. If there’s at least one nice person on or near each of the 2,563 stations, think I may tag along!!
All so terribly, terribly touching dear boy - Mad dogs and Englishmen and all that sort of rot, wot! I see a great future for Ms Celia Pipe on that new-fangled Interweb film service thingy (we've seen the acting and dancing - can she sing?), but not sure about the Chap - bit wooden, perhaps? Tootle-Pip! ;-)
It was actually a better Celia Johnson than most cos Vicki didn't do the "terribly, terribly bright" thing. To be honest though I thought Geoff was less Trevor Howard and more Frankie. Good show though.
Wonderful platform announcement Vicki! Is there no end to your talents? And the Skipton skip too! Plus Brief Encounter - definitely one of the best videos so far.
I have been to the Isle Of Man from Liverpool on the catamaran, way faster, but expensive (and been on the fab railways/tramways). As far as reasons, Big Clive lives there, that is reason enough!
You have to go to the Isle of Man. Get the Manx Electric Railway up to Snaefell mountain and to Dhoon Glen. Probably the quaintest walk in Europe
Love this series of videos, but this one is a particular gem. I don't think I've heard a satire of Brief Encounter before! Wonderful stuff.
Kudos to Will in his editing for not just switching to black and white for the Brief Encounter segment, but also switching to 4:3 aspect ratio. Nice!
The new entrance is locally known as 'Dark Arches' and both canal (Leed/Liverpool) and River Aire. Was concepted back in the station rebuild of 1999 but kicked into long grass it finally only came to fruition in recent years opening in 2015.
And ohhh Vickey did the 'tourist' mistake with Keighley saying 'Keeley' instead of 'Keith-ley' - there's a lot more of them abound in this West Yorkshire when you return
Fact about the Heysham service from Leeds - it's only since 2004 that Leeds gained a direct service to Heysham, when Northern did a network retime and resource combination. Previous a separate Heysham service followed the service from Leeds into Morecambe etc and the rest is history..Mind It took a while to get Heysham in to the auto announce!
The Isle of Man is gorgeous! The trains the are awesome.
Carnforth isn't quite the same now the West Coast Mainline trains go through without stopping and their platforms have been largely removed. My favorite fact about the film: It was supposedly set in London, but someone forgot to change the destination boards in the background of the shots, so the next train was leaving for Barrow-In-Furness; not likely from London!
There used to be direct trains from London to Barrow in Furness as I used to regularly travel on them as a young child in the early to mid 1980s.
There's now refurbished pacers on the keighley worth valley railway 😊
Thank you Geoff and Vicki for starting this video in Leeds it's where I was originally born and raised I now reside in another beautiful part of Yorkshire York, a shame Vicki couldn't explore Leeds as there is much to see and another football stadium to see is The Old Peacock Ground, Elland Road the home of Leeds United
Watched A Brief Encounter with my wife Michelle after your suggestion and we both enjoyed it. Thank you for that, Rob
Vicki, if you ever do an "All the Castles", Skipton Castle is well worth a visit. They give visitors an A3 sheet of paper with diagrams of each room and the exit by which you should leave to get to the next room. This is to enforce a sort of one-way system. And there's an ancient yew tree with very gnarled bark in the centre of the courtyard where you can pretend to be Anneka Rice searching for the final clue on Treasure Hunt, which IIRC was hidden in that tree. And Geoff gets to play Graham the Cameraman, following you and getting sneaky shots of your bottom :-)
Brillant! A lovely mix of humour, fact and good old Yorkshire weather 🌧🌤🌦
Good Morning all the stations from a Freight railroader in Canada!
Imagine if all the points at Clapham Junction were manually operated
They have taken the points out at Clapham Junction, I am surprised they did not show it in this post. As the train to Heysham does stop there.
i meant the big Clapham Junction in London. Don't know which one you're talking about Puy
I was being pedantic, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingleton_branch_line, there also use to be a line from Wennington to Lancaster. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halton_railway_station,_Lancashire .
H010 newsflash:
16 trains derail, killing 7,098 people as a guard takes his eye off of the tracks for 5 seconds
Would certainly give all those guards SWR are trying to take off trains new jobs!
Lancashire vs Yorkshire comes from the War of the Roses, or at least that’s what we’re told!
A mancunian by birth but❤️Yorkshire .....lovely folk there😀👍brief encounter😂😜loving it!
"I just realised, it's 2 hours on a Pacer" #fail 😂
2 hours on a pacer? That's heaven for Vicki
Great modern adaptation of the film scene, very funny
You two are quite silly...and I like you all the more for it!
Lovely, best video so far; Brief Encounter with Vicki the star, very funny
Outstanding well done you two cheerful ,funny and a delight to watch thank you 💕
Wow, does Vicky have the near perfect announcement voice! Impressive and extremely pleasant to listen to.
Fab video! One of the best, I'd say top 3! Could almost pip "Some might say"....almost!
Looking forward to the 12th August trip out now to the station(s) ive never visited before... Lancaster AND Morecambe. Great episode. Get the kick starter going for "All the heritage lines" - would be a great series and welcome promotion for all the fantastic heritage lines around the country.
All the Pronunciations!
Vicki is adorable.
Brief Encounter what a great film. Yes ALL the stations LOL
love your take on brief encounter and a Virgin Pendolino train goes rushing through Carnforth station when you think back to the time of the film that type of train didn't exist neither was it in the pipeline to be built but it was a great take on the film
Your right about Leeds it is very functional but not very glamorous, could never understand why they use a pacer to Morecambe, they use a 2 or 3 carriage train to Carlisle, they used to use, what I call a compartment train, 6 seats to a compartment, its such a shame that these trains are no longer running,
As always guys another great video
Ps Ian (also my name 😁) is a legend
Vickie, that was a fantastic station announcement! Very well done.
Bravo (!!) Very Witty beyond Clever (!!) I’m seeing really good Improve- your timing and play-off masterful
You guys don't understand how much I am enjoying this series! You've inspired me to do my own soon so I thank you so much (Geoff and Vicki) for your inspiration
The Manx Pound isn't Sterling, but is tied to Sterling on a 1:1 basis. So £1 Manx =£1 Sterling. That's slightly different to Scottish and NI notes, which are in fact Sterling.
A hard bit of Manx currency to find is the Manx 50 pence Note, yes they had/have a fifty pence note, somewhere is one of my books I have one being used as a book mark. I've also got one of their plastic pound notes.
My dad once took my family to Carnforth in search of Steam World. We were told we were twelve years late! He had a really old flyer. He then attempted to entertain me and my brother with the Brief Encounter waiting room, we were about 7 and had no idea what he was talking about. And Heysham is quite nice. Just don't swim in the sea. It's all nuclear! You didn't give Heysham village a chance, it is the most quaint village ever see. But it is nuclear!
It was called Steamtown, was well worth a visit when it was going, once had a footplate ride on the Sir Nigel Gresley after collecting tokens in the North West Evening Mail
Its still there, however it is no longer open to the public. It is currently owned and operated by WCRC
Vicki you are fast becoming a utube legend!
Selfies. That is brilliant!
An excellent episode. I liked the Brief Encounter ending. It just gets better and better.
So loved this... At the same time funny, warm, moving and romantic.
👍
Heysham port possibilities:
To the trains
To the boats
To the lorries
To the buses
To the isle of man
To the motorbikes
To hell (pacers)
You should go to the isle of man it's a really nice place.. they have a transport museum too
You had me quite in stitches with the encounter. Brilliant!
I used to go to Leeds station a lot when I was a teenager because I went to college on the train. Definitely checking out that South Entrance
I never expected to see Geoff Marshall starring as Myrtle Bagot in his own remake of 'Brief Encounter'!
Superb episode - They are all good - but this is one of the best. Love the Brief Encounter Encounter. Keep them coming..
I like how it stays in black and white to the end after the Brief Encounter sketch
I've had about 8 family holidays in the I.O.M it's awesome! The national rail system is steam hauled in the south and electric tramway in the north. There's also a mountain tram and a horse tram!
Welcome to all the boats
Absolutely brilliant!
I quite enjoyed this episode. Very well done.
So so good! What a wonderful episode!
Magnificent! You just keep raising the bar (or the baa when you were in Wales). The Brief Encounter bit was tremendous entertainment.
The best "Celia Johnson" voice that I've ever heard. Chars!
Well done avoiding photographing what must have been a very photogenic nuclear power station. Keep up the great work guys :)
What a beautiful movie. We should start a kick starter for your acting career!
Hellifield station looks lovely now, but a few years ago it looked a right dump!! They've done a superb restoration job!!
keighley is pronounced Keith-ley
pyrofizzy yeah I suppose it is if you take off the accent. I used to live there btw
pyrofizzy Oh. That's a bit higher up in the world tho, very classy place
2 hours on a pacer !! Good luck 😂
Splendid video old chap.
Brilliant video
Having referenced Morecambe and Wise in Skipton, I'm surprised you didn't mention them again when you were actually in Morecambe. Eric Morecambe was born John Eric Bartholomew and chose the state surname Morecambe from his family's childhood holidays in said town.
Vicki's a genius at heel clicking. Just as good as Moe Howard who was brilliant.
the canal is actually a river(I think it's the river aire) that was completely open but when the Leeds station was built the river was in the way so they put the station above the river.
"Faux-friendly rivalry"? I think you mean "battle to the death"!
After all, Lancashire had to import its textile raw material (cotton) from distant places like India and the USA, whereas Yorkshire grew its raw material (wool) on the backs of sheep in the neighbourhood. Not many people know that different towns in the West Riding produced different types of woollen cloth: Huddersfield has the carpets, many towns have woollen mills, Leeds has the worsted mills, spinning the fine yarn and weaving it into cloth for suits. And Batley, Morley, Dewsbury and Ossett have the shoddy and mungo mills, ripping up old cloth and making new wool from the fibres; my grandparents' house in Ossett backed onto a shoddy mill and I can remember when I used to stay there was a distant moaning noise from the machinery, all night long.
Sadly about the only place to see the machinery in action nowadays is in the Armley Mills (Leeds) and the Bradford industrial museums.
Mortimer50145 Thumbs up to you for the regular inclusion of excellent and interesting facts in your comments. Are you SURE you aren't a historian?!?! 👍🤓
It may be a "battle to the death", but it is a siblingly rivalry that gets all but forgotten when someone from London disses either county!
Still a good number of working mills across Yorkshire actually. Nothing like the industry at its height but the textile industry isn't by no means dead in West Yorkshire.
Well done with the Morecambe & Wise skip Vicky👍🏻😃💜
I forgot to mention that you can get a return ticket from anywhere in the country to Douglas, IoM, using a scheme call Sail-Rail. It includes the ferry trip obs, and you get perfectly normal looking train tickets with your station and Douglas printed on them. That's cool!
Lovely Carnforth moment. Brief. Great RP, though.
I felt I was in the room with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson!
I love that Brief Encounter parody, I'm a doctor (thumbs up with a smile) also I like to say thanks for the heads up about that nuclear power station at Heysham because i'm planning there next month to do the ride from Lancaster to Heysham via Morcombe and when I get off I get a few quick videos and a few photos of the train at the platform stabled while on the platform, not planning to film any part of that power station but at least I know not to film it :)
That was very funny today well done on a great series.
Leeds Station's interiors looks like Hamburg Hbf's! And yeah most German railway stations will look like these, especially the newer ones. VERY functional.
I never knew that exits exists. I'm gonna explore it on Wednesday.
Loved the black and white All the stations end slate haha
You should do an entire episode in B&W. That "Brief Encounter" parody segment was brilliant!
When you come back up North and travel through Lancaster, as you have to of course, please take a moment to look at Lancaster Castle frontage. It is only two minutes from the station.
Well I must say that this episode might be hard to top. I have high hopes for more unique vignettes. Good job !
Slight correction Keighley is pronounced Keeth Lee and i found out the hard way.
I'm surprised at Vicki for not knowing that! Actually Keith Lee is the RP version and locals used to (probably not so much now) call it Keet-lah.
Love the Brief Encounter bit.
Vicki is really good at 1940s-style RP.
