What does the Quran really say about a Muslim woman's hijab? | Samina Ali | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • In recent times, the resurgence of the hijab along with various countries’ enforcement of it has led many to believe that Muslim women are required by their faith to wear the hijab. In this informative talk, novelist Samina Ali takes us on a journey back to Prophet Muhammad's time to reveal what the term “hijab” really means -- and it's not the Muslim woman's veil! So what does “hijab” actually mean, if not the veil, and how have fundamentalists conflated the term to deny women their rights? This surprising and unprecedented idea will not only challenge your assumptions about hijab but will change the way you see Muslim women.
    Samina Ali is an award-winning author, activist and cultural commentator. Her debut novel, Madras on Rainy Days, won France’s prestigious Prix Premier Roman Etranger Award and was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award in Fiction. Ali’s work is driven by her belief in personal narrative as a force for achieving women’s individual and political freedom and in harnessing the power of media for social transformation. She is the curator of the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed virtual exhibition, Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art & Voices.

    Edit : the whole point of my comment is that in Islam, a guy averting his gaze is just as important as a lady covering up.
    Averting the gaze away from the tempting things have been mentioned many times in Qur'an. Whether it was for men , or women.
    So, when people blame harassment on women (which happens in all countries, but now I want to focus on the Muslim ones) it is not because of religion, but rather because of society.

      Rosalind’s comment is very true. I wish more folks would read the Q’uran, if only to understand what it actually says vs. what has been interpreted incorrectly by people with an agenda. As Rosalind’s quote demonstrates, men have responsibilities, too. And that equality of responsibility is important to acknowledge, but the fact that the burden of punishment has been placed for many generations much more on women than on men is important to address so that we begin to actually fix it.

    My personal experience is when I choose not to wear a hijab around the people who do. They judge me as being wrong, not modest and less than them which I don't agree with. What you wear is a part of the many wisdom. But meanwhile, it is a big lifestyle change, especially for people living in a non-Islamic country. Overly imposing this rule before all the other verses is forming a barrier for women like me to get closer to Quran. Hence, voices trying to investigate and elaborate more on this context are essential.

So they misunderstood and you are the one with the correct interpretation of that verse. Yes, Allah did not detail in the verse how the cloths should be worn exactly but the Hadiths did (i.e for a Muslim woman she should be cover completely except for face and hand). Of course, the logical follow-up to this observation is that this extremist mindset is followed only by a small percentage of the Islamic faith. Accordingly, whenever you see a veiled woman or a man wearing a thobe in public, one should not think, "Muslim, therefore terrorist" and give them a fifty-foot berth. That, in turn, is stereotyping at best, prejudiced bigotry at worst, and dead wrong no matter how you slice it.
    Modern Islam is filled with a plethora of ideals that modern Enlightenment thinking finds wrong, offensive. Most of these concern women and female children, as was addressed in this video. I do not know what the Q'ran states about these individuals and their expectations, but I feel that there are two points that most people can agree on: first, that Islamic women are not treated with the respect that they are owed as human beings, and secondly, that women are more than the possessions and trophies that they are sometimes regarded as. Take this as you will, but I personally feel that women deserve much more than modern Islam gives to them.
    When I see what the typical view of Islam has become, I feel grieved. From taking AP World History last year, I know well how Islam has shaped the world-for better or for worse. It has a beautiful, illustrious history, and the reputation it has now does not do it credit. Like Ms. Ali states here, Islam is so much more-should be known for so much more-than it is right now. Accordingly, I'd like to challenge people to look beyond the obvious flaws it has on the surface and to look at its heart, which is beautiful.

      Hi Rachel, I read your comment and you said that you felt like islam doesn't Gove women the respect they deserve. Much of what this woman said was false, especially what she said about the hijab. She made the hijab seem like something that is oppressive, but it's the opposite actually. The hijab is not solely meant to hide the body from men so they don't get "aroused". Since women are so sexualized in society and treated like toys, the hijab is supposed to be a tool to guard a woman's beauty so people's first impressions of her will not be of her looks, but rather on her intellect and her personality. It helps to give women the respect that they deserve. And also, when she said that islam wants women to stay at home and be useless and uneducated was untrue. The Prophet Muhammad said "The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 74. Knowledge is valued and seemed in Islam, and it is not meant only for the men. Feel free to message me if you would like to know anything else. 😊

    • @sarahsendian8156
      @sarahsendian8156 Před 7 lety +21

      I honestly don't know where you're getting any of your information from. I said a woman covers so she can show the world her intellect before her looks. Everyone judges people based on their looks. There are even stereotypes that blonde women are dumb, and brunette women are strict and boring. The hijab is meant to break those stereotypes and allow a woman to be valued for her mind rather than her body. Women nowadays are often taken advantage of for their bodies and are underestimated because of their looks. The hijab gives women the respect they deserve and forces people to put aside those stereotypes and actually get to know the woman behind the hijab instead. Islam is a religion of peace and it puts women on a pedestal by saying the paradise is at the feet of mothers and another hadith that says mothers deserve the most respect and loyalty, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim).

      @Bjørn Wikan And I have nothing to say against that, but people shouldn't afraid to put it on either. Fear can also be a type of oppression. So I guess my point is it's different from person to person. Nobody should tell you what or what not to do. You're happy with your religion please continue with it, if your not happy with then do anything other than changing it and tell everybody to change as well. Sometimes it's the culture's fault, it is oppressing woman and not the religion itself, because as she said in the Quran the hijab is only mentioned 3 times.

    • @Angel-mh8qb
      @Angel-mh8qb Před 5 lety +16

      @Bjørn Wikan depends on where you live and what that hat means to that culture. This is where I said it's a culture's fault and not a religion's fault. Their is nowhere in the coran that said "a woman is to be killed if she does not wear a hijab" nowhere. Religion is a set of rules, that is all. Per example, take a constitution. A constitution is a set of law and rules. If a politician misuses it by twisting the meaning of it's words, is it the constitution's fault or the politician's?

Instead of telling women to cover up he attacks the men for their lustful thoughts! Having watched this video now, it seems as though Islam has a similar approach, which I never thought before. Although the women were told to wear the garment to stop themselves being harassed, it was aimed at the men who were to blame, and the women were merely being protected, not blamed for dressing immodestly.

      Bär Honigfeld In all honesty and to my knowledge of course, the licking puss part was represents another meaning, it means "A husband who carries out his responsibility to Allah, his wife, his children and his family from both parts of the families is more noble than a faithful wife is(To Allah, her husband and her families from both parties). A man's role in Islam is heavy, very damn heavy which is why the Prophet took such a horrifying example to explain how noble a faithful Husband is. He aint telling us women to lick our husband's pus, he is just making us realize how much we must appreciate our husbands if he is a faithful one. Hence the "IF". So, I guess she missed that mark. If I understood her speech well, she missed a few marks. But overall, it is satisfactory kinda worried that she may be a shia because of the marks missed.

      Bär Honigfeld the thing is, we as Muslims are not ashamed of Islam we are proud and therefore we want the whole world to see Islam as it is, a way of life. So with this video for instance, the speaker is not saying anything positive, her information is inaccurate and topped up with no references whatsoever. So it is solemnly based on her personal understanding and opinion; which in turn sends out incorrect information and confuses the [hell] out of everyone. People, please, if you want to learn about Islam or maybe you just want a clear answer to your curiosity, refer to reliable resources which are the Islamic Sunni resources. Allah(God) says in the noble Quran: " Verily Allah guides those who want to be guided".

      We do tell men to respect women. Men and women should both lower their gaze and not engage in physical contact to respect each other's boundaries and proprietary.
      As for only women wearing hijab, it's meant as protection and empowerment for us. Imagine a woman going to the gym in yoga pants and a sports bra. Although the ideal situation would be for men not to gaze lustfully upon that woman, the realistic scenario would be that more likely than not, that woman would have unwanted onlookers gazing at her disrespectfully. By wearing the hijab, we are taking away men's ability to sexualize our bodies as a commodity or in other words objectify us. You can't really sexualize something that you can't see.
      Another benefit of the hijab for women is that by hiding our beauty, we would be certain that a potential spouse isn't marrying us for our looks, but who we are as a person. After all, looks don't last forever, and when you get married to someone you want that relationship to last till death; not until your beauty fades or you get older.
      In addition to that, I also want to add that men are also required to wear a hijab in a certain sense. Everything from their bellybutton (i.e. navel) to their knees has to be covered.

      Hello! :) I find that there is some misinformation in this video and as a muslim feel compelled to point it out. Quran explicitly states in surah nur that women should bring their khimar (headscarf) forward to cover their bosoms as well. It does not say take off the khimar. And for the wives of the prophets an additional covering was ordered: the hijab. A literal screen between them and non mahrams. Hence a headscarf covering your bosom is obligatory and it does not take away from any muslim woman’s rights. It actually prevents them from being sexualised and hence makes them feel more confident in their bodies without being gazed at in odd ways. I found this true for myself when i started hijab as well! No more body dysmorphia! :) I hope I was able to clear some misconceptions, and pray that I am not the cause of misinformation either. Afterall, Allah knows best. :) Have a great day friend xx

    Hi everyone, i'm going to clear up a little on a huge misconception you may get from this video. Make sure you read the whole thing to not misunderstand.
    In the Arabic language (not in the Islamic context) the words that are used have way deeper meaning than what it is literally translated as, so in Arabic the word hijab is not the word for head cover it means barrier for example a curtain can be hijab, and the word hijab was just coined to be used as head cover and its not the word to describe head cover in Arabic nor did the Arabs in general ever used it that way. There are many words for head cover in Arabic and as i said hijab is not one of them, but the word that does mean head cover in Arabic is khimar which means head cover and it also means the length of that head cover or scarf (which is usually a length long enough to cover the chest) and this is just what the word means in Arabic language its not in an Islamic context or anything. So, in those days the women use to have a khimar that they would tie with their pony tails and throw it behind their shoulders even the men use to have a khimar which was a turban they would wear that goes down to a certain length over their shoulder so the Quran tells the women to take their khimar and throw it in front of them covering their chest. Some may argue though that the word khimar just means shawl and nothing else well whats interesting in Arabic is that one word contains a whole meaning and what i mean by that is that it consists of a set of meanings so the word khimar means scarf and with that scarf it covers the head and that scarf is a certain length mostly understood as the length that it would cover the chest. In conclusion, the speaker (Samina Ali) was looking for the wrong word she was correct that nowhere in the quran does it say to wear the hijab thats because hijab doesn't mean head cover khimar does and so thats what the quran uses. She also mention that if god wanted us to cover he would say it clearly not using an indirect word like hijab and he did by using the word khimar which is understood the same as how we understand hijab nowadays. Also I totally respect sister samina and im not insulting her i respect her message all i wanted to do is clarify the misconception.
    The ayah that talks about covering is in al noor 24 : 31
    for reference: Check out the bayyinah institute channel nouman ali khan to cover or not?
    Thank you for reading and i hope this clears up the confusion!

    • @KhasTanien
      @KhasTanien Před 4 lety +105

      I've watched Samina Ali's talk a few times more now and she actually doesn't confuse the words hijab and khimar? She describes what a khimar is at 5:37 and at 7:17 she defines what hijab used to mean in the literal sense (that is, the word hijab and not the aquired meaning it gained over time).
      She also didn't say that there was NO mention of women being asked by god to cover themselves - she just said that in the original scripture, without the insertion added later by some clerics, there is only the mention of said khimar (or any other type of veil/scarf, IF it is custom in that culture). Which means that, if you go by the original scripture without added commentary, god did not give a whole checklist of body parts that a muslim woman should cover - only to maybe cover the head if it is customary in that area and to dress modestly.
      And there's a big difference between "dress modestly" and what women are supposed to wear according to fundamentalists and some insertions added after the original text was written (to completely cover the head, neck and face except a net in front of the eyes - wear gloves - wear wide robes with long sleeves that reach down to the ankles - etc.)

    The Quran emphasizes modesty and protection for women in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59), instructing them to draw their cloaks over their bodies to avoid harassment. This directive is not limited to Prophet Muhammad's relatives but extends to all believing women globally.
    Similarly, Surah An-Nur (24:31) underscores the importance of veiling, the Arabic version of the verse uses the term "khimar" which refers to a head covering, commonly known as hijab, and advises covering the chest as well.

      Exactly. Many strict islam + islam adjacent religions, & cultures (*in conjunction*) are used to indoctrinate people, & encourage the oppression & control of women. Sometimes cultivating a tradition of "honour" beliefs: so performing FGM, forced child marriage, & honor killings is encouraged OR turned a blind eye to... Women make up ~50% of the entire world population. Women & their supporters need to band together *with* our Asian, Middle Eastern, African, & world sisters - everyone must please DO something to stop religion based + culture based female abuse!!!

      Mohsin Khan: O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful.

      @@riyadm1660 first and most important of all, my point is, and always has been, that her voice and the manner of speech is calming, which I like. Second of all, that composure does NOT mean that her talk is NOT reasonable and accurate EITHER. And thirdly, why you feel the need to yuck other people's yum ? Not cool dude.
