What's the difference between the compact and full size brush heads? I get that the size is probably different. But is one softer/harder bristles? Is the compact meant for people with small mouths? etc

I am not aware of any difference in the bristle firmness. Small ones are better suited to smaller mouths or some just prefer the smaller head to reach certain parts of the mouth.
