    Watching the video made this an easy job. I used a 1/4" drill bit and had no problem removing the rivets. I bought a pair of 1/4"-20 x 3/4" socket cap screws and 1/4"-20 lock nuts from Home Depot to mount the new handle. Make sure you get the little hooks on the bottom of the handle in behind the door handle before you tighten the mounting screws.

    Worked for me. Thanks for the video! Note: If both the interior AND the exterior latches are broken. Use a punch and 5/16 drill bit to remove the exterior latch and then use needle nose pliers to push DOWN on the rod to open the door. Then proceed to remove the door panel, etc.

    Thank you! I would never have attempted this without your video. It went reasonably well until I tried to pop rivet the handle back on and discovered they were too small, so I spent 1/2 an hour scrounging up a couple of bolts and lock nuts, after that it went together. And it worked, YEA!

    My handle was broken on one side. I just snapped the old one off since it was being replaced anyway and it made it much easier to access the rivets.

  • @SuperKnissen
    @SuperKnissen Před 9 lety +3

    I really appreciated the video, much easier to watch something than try to use just the Chilton manuals. It's the little details that make all the difference. Anyway, I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. When it came to drilling out the rivets, I found that using a 1/4 inch drill instead of a 5/16 worked much better. I didn't need to use a chisel at all. Thought I would add my experience to the subject. Also, it is imperative that the clip on the rod be replaced in the exact same spot or you will run into a door handle that still won't open the door. No big deal, but a waste of time to have to remove and install the door panel a second time. Thanks again.

    • @bearly1727
      @bearly1727 Před rokem

      I did mine today and AFTER punching the center of the rivets, I used a 1/4" drill bit and followed with the 5/16" and it worked really well. Your advice on putting the clip onto the rod in the same spot also helped me avoid an issue I'm sure, thanks. I tested the lock/handle assembly and the window down/up BEFORE I put the panel back on. I am not a mechanic, and this was a first for me, so I was pleased when everything worked.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  Před 12 lety +2

    They don't come with bolts. You can either attach them with rivets like the factory had done, or you could get a couple of small bolts from your local hardware store.

    I have a problem with my door handle breaking. I have bought 2 doors handles in the past month and it seems they are breaking because of the window regulator. When I installed the second one I realized it. The bulky part of the handle that holds the latch bar on the inside gets caught behind the top bar of the window regulator. Seems as though the window regulator should be somehow adjusted further out so that the handle won't get stuck and break. Is this possible? Manufacturer defect maybe?

    Thank You for the video, it was helpful. It would have been nice had you shown some of those pesky details. I followed along with you step by step. But when I tested the handle it would not open. Not sure if someone tried to break into this truck or what. The owner did say that they had to pull really hard on the handle to open the door. Just below the yellow clip that you show in the video there is a connection, a tab. Took me a while to figure out it was bent down. As if someone had pulled really hard on the handle and bent it. Once I straightened it out the door opened like new. Not sure why but I was thinking your parts made out of metal. But then again Nothing screams Quality like a thin peace of plastic with some springs and for only $18, and you have to get your own nuts and bolts. You know how it is the handle breaks on a Sunday night and you got to go to work on Monday. So I get my KY jelly and headed down to the dealership, I knew what was coming. The guy said $48 bucks and change. I was Not looking forward to going there. But then he says he has to order it. I was some what relieved and disappointed I knew i could get it cheaper on line. But I did not want to have to wait. So for half the price even though I had to wait a week not a bad deal.

    If you look at the clip it may just attach to the rod, some times they just clip on.

  • @kathylavalleewelch5516

    Thanks for your video help me replace door handle. But I can’t open the door so I adjusted the rod in three different places on that clip and it doesn’t make a difference where I clip it. It still doesn’t work now what

    Thanks for the video. I had to watch carefully to see if the window had to be up or down. I know common sense right. Wish i would have ordered through your company, because I had to go find bolts and locking nuts.

    Yes it does I have a 1996 and it worked the only difference was the door handle, make sure you buy a 1996 door handle instead of a 1997 which I did do on accident.

    You may be able to pop in off of the rod with a flat head screw driver.

    Thanks that helped a lot , considering the door handle cost $197 I used 1/4" x 3/4 ' long bolt ,with a Lock nut , and lock washer , and added thread lock also.

    Someone tried breaking into our Mountaineer with a screwdriver and broke off the handle. We replaced the handle per your instructions, though the door will still not open with the outside handle. When I move the clip up & down attached to the latch module, it appears to have spring tension, though it will not open the door. Do you have any suggestions? BTW - Thanks For The Great Video!!!
