How Dave Chappelle Delivers a Callback

  • Dave Chappelle is most known for some pretty provoking pieces of banter, but apparently nobody's noticed he's great at a bunch of other stuff too.
    In this vid, we'll look at one of Dave's most underrated comedy weapons; the callback.

    Howdy folks,
    Some of you may notice this is a video I've previously published. There were a few comments which (quite rightly) pointed out that the backing music was too loud. My plan was to simply quieten the music and reupload, but upon re-watch there was a lot I wanted to change. So I've pretty much redone the whole vid haha. I've been surprised at how much my editing has improved since starting the channel so I've smoothed a few things out and hopefully made it a more enjoyable watch.
    Please think of this less as a shameless repost and more me trying to make the channel better in the long run :)
    Much love,
    Josh

      Aside from the fact he got ganked in the “kicked her in the pussy” setup himself. The Emmett Till/Carolyn Bryant closer was actually the real bit, the first joke was simply a play on the concept of him writing jokes backwards.

      It's a trick he pulls off almost identically, but even more ornately, with the "So I kicked her in the p****y" joke - the set up (you see it in the video above) where he does the story about picking lines out of a fishbowl, and builds the joke around it...but the 2nd call back, at the very end of that special, like Cosby's is deeply serious - how do you feel about terrible racist events like the murder of Emmett Till that directly led to huge positive social change - and then links it to the idea that America is never more united than when everyone is hating on Donald Trump together - that Donald Trump's election and presidency is somehow the Emmett till murder again, the horrible thing that will lead to great positive social change, and how that should make us feel about that event - the end line callback - kicking the woman who lied about Till in the p****y becomes not just a clever call back, but more profoundly, it grants permission to cheer the outcome while continuing to resent the event that caused it...while at the same time sneakily telling you, if you read between the lines, that the line never came from no fishbowl - the paradox of being grateful for horror because of the positives that came from it were the point all along, and it was THAT that he built the show around....

      If anyone needs it explained, Pimp was an allegory for what happened to him with Comedy Central. They made all that money from him but he got a small percent of the money from it. And all the people at the table, his agent, the executives, the producers, they all told him that they were right and that it was a good deal but they all were in on it just like in the Pimp story how the doctor told the bottom bitch that Iceberg was right and he was in on it and just like at the Three-card Monte table how the crowd told him the game was fair and they were in on it.

      @anthonyzullo Před 3 lety +3

      Dave said on stage in 07 at the laugh factory, "im so smart im uncomfortable in this world" that changed my entire direction of life. People like Dave and myself exist, its just he has a stage that demands respect but a lot of people like Dave and myself exist. We just don't have a platform. I was at rehab years and years ago and made a awesome black joke. The black people wernt too happy so I was threatened to be sent home. I asked the administratives if they enjoy Chris Rock, which they obviously did. So I said whats the difference between his jokes and mine and they said "he's a comedian" I had to reply, no. He's a comedian on HBO, I am a comedian in rehab. What is the difference. They had to tell the offended people to be quiet. Its just jokes. But the entire point being. That as a comedian, its your DUTY to speak. Its your job to make people uncomfortable. The more mad they are, the more they are offended the more you know as a comedian youre in the right. Im here to make you uncomfortable, its my purpose. Dave is just so good at spin that he knows what he's doing is profound and inspiring and he looks for the headlines where as most dread them. Thats simply testament to his genuine nature. He doesn't care for fame or respect, he jist wants to have his thoughts and be treated normal. Ive met him, he's more interesting being boring than any famous person I've met.

Call back you say? And I thought they had just forgotten they'd used the same punchline earlier. Thank you for your detailed analysis, breakdown and explanation of an obvious comedic tool, and Dave's mastery of its facilitation. Im certain there's a bunch of his fans who get frustrated with him assuming his audience is intelligent enough to pick up on his mastery of the craft and wish he could break down his jokes and explain why they work during his sets. Now, thanks to you, we can enjoy his comedy more like a class for learning impaired children and without the distraction of enjoyment and laughter.
