I just finished reading Roger Daltrey's book. Fascinating story. Keith Moon was hilarious from the outside but a total nightmare for anyone close to him or trying to work with him. He cost the band a fortune. John Entwistle was very dark and moody and had a mean streak. Pete Townshend was a volatile creative genius and he knew it. Roger had the toughest working class background working in a factory and was fighting to escape from it. He had the strongest work ethic and avoided the drugs. Unlike most bands, with the Who it was the lead singer and front man who man both feet most firmly planted on the ground. Roger was the anchor that kept the ship steady all those years.
Maybe , but Pete Townnsend cartainly was an inspired msucian who kept the WHO running even after Daughtry left . I never saw "the who". the one time I could have(the Its Hard tour 1982), I traded for a two week party and about 14 grams of nearly pure cocaine , which corrupted about 50 people and was a ton of fun . Did I make the right decision ? I still don't know. But missing the Who , remains as the only Wood Stock band, I ever missed. Never miss a band who was at Wood Stock, I learned that well , over the years. And If I get the bucks, I do want to see them "Live at Leeds" as they promised after this covid-flu bull is over with.
@@chrisperrien7055 Daltrey didn't exactly quit the band, he took a break in 1980 to do McVicar (and all the other band members were involved in his solo album of the soundtrack.) It was actually Townshend who wanted to stop touring in 1982 and become a studio group, and a year later he quit the band and the Who ended, except for periodic reunions, until they reformed in 1996.
It was just a great Summer song to crank on your car radio on a hot summer evening while cruisin' with friends. This got up to #12 in L.A. in August 1972 lasting 7 Weeks on the chart. Got up to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Love how this song combines the standard rock group lineup with "primitive" instruments (harmonica and jaw harp) as well as the synthesizer. Perfect blend of past, present, and future.
Literally! They held the World Record for "Loudest Concert measured in Decibels" or something like that for like 20 years or so (?) from the 1970s. I think the only other bands to break that record were some Metal bands from the 90s
When I was a little kid in the 70s, this was my favorite song by them, for some reason. Maybe because it reminded me a bit of Three Dog Night and bullfrogs named Jeremiah. (Give me a break, I was 4 in 1972)
Nobody, but nobody is better than The Who. I can say this after 4 decades of listening to all kinds of music in volume- classical, jazz, electronic, pop, world music, new age.
I was just trying to crank it up on me pc but can't get it as loud as I like it. The best part loud is at 3:30 when he say's "well every body come on". When I'm in my car driving I can't wait till the part comes up and I ding it with everything I got. my favorite line is " it's the singer not the song that makes the music move along". That's just an awesome line.
1i1feat I've blown up more amps with a PC than anything else over the years. Digital music loves power but some passages are deadly to power transistors within rated specifications. Push the limits at your own peril.
This is one of my favorite Who songs of all time! Each member aptly contributed to the band’s unique raw, rock ‘n’ roll sound!!! Keith is amazing on this record. Love The Who!!!
+Brock Landers He did play an Alembic on occasion, but in this video it's clearly a Thunderbird. Look at the video at the 1:00 mark to get a good look at it and compare it to pictures of Thunderbird basses at the Gibson website. Also, at the 1:15 mark when he comes on with the bass line you can hear the characteristic strong fundamental and ringing sustain of the notes, due to the Thunderbird's stiff multi-ply neck thru design. I have my Gibson Thunderbird sitting next to me right here and I've just finished practicing some bass lines. I'm considering getting a fretless Alembic Europa or fretless Warwick Thumb bass sometime in the future when I get my bass chops down better.
+Yamaha 26003 There are different versions of the Thunderbird that Gibson makes. The Gibson Thunderbird has a narrow and fast 9 -ply mahogany and walnut neck-thru laminate construction, switchable MM style multi tap hum bucker pickups with Alnico V pole pieces, a thick rosewood fretboard and a Babicz FCH aluminum bridge. The bass is PLEKed at the factory for very uniform fret height. I was able to set my neck relief and string action much below what Gibson specified, with the effect that the already fast neck is extremely fast and easy to play and I'm beginning to lose some of the callouses that I had built up from playing with a higher action setup before. I did upgrade the stock Gibson Tektoid nut for a custom cut bone nut, for greater sustain and tuning stability. These basses are going for about $2200 now at Guitar Centers. Gibson also sells its Epiphone line of the Thunderbird. It's quite a bit less expensive but from what I've read it seems to be a good value.
The who the doors and jimi make me feel nostalgic about an era I wasnt even alive for. The late 60s and early 70s was the best time for music in my opinion.
I hope true rock and roll makes a come back from the depths of crap that exists today. The 70's was the decade where music truly exploded. The 60's gave us the start, but the 70's truly was the best music ever produced.
hate to burst your bubble, but pete townshend is anything but pure, if you know what i mean, haha... only playing, he's actually my favorite guitarist of all time.
my first husband, a bassist always said John was a lead bass player and he (my ex) did his best to follow his style. Did pretty well now that II look back. I'm in awe every time i watch him play.
Man it's tough to watch one of the most ferocious live bands of all time mime a performance. Pete looks like he's enjoying himself though! Love that SG!
This seems to be one of their most overlooked hits as I haven't heard it on the radio in probably 20 years in the USA. Not a flop by any means as it reached #17 in Sept, 1972. Great memories.
Man, I wish I got to see them. My dad turned me on to them and all my early music. Pink Floyd, ELO, HENDRIX, SO MANY others. He never missed a Who show when they came to Boston
The Who at their very best. This is a great song. Pete's very short lead guitar breaks at: 1.01 (and again) at: 1.35 are bloody great. I've always loved those 2 guitar breaks.....they're like old friends. And John's bass guitar thundering in at: 1.12 is just....wow! Likewise Keith's drumming and Roger's singing are just sublime. *What a fu*king great band!*
Nice to know I'm not the only one who loves Pete's solos in this song. Simple, to the point serving the song. Some guys solo their brains out and it drives me nuts.
@@craigharrell7144 I couldn't agree with you more Craig. The well 'crafted' guitar licks that Pete does in this song, are all helping to push the whole thing along to a greater outcome ....rather than 'showboating'. Thanks.
I jam out to this every day on the bus along with other The Who hits. I'm in eighth grade so it's hard to find one who has the same music interests as me.
I know the feels. I'm in college though first year but no one really has the same passion for rock and roll as I do. I love The Who sad that next year is the farewell tour. I'm still saving up money to buy my ticket but I'll be there no matter what.
I was in the same boat when I was your age. Actually, even at 27 it's still the same. I went to see them by myself a couple of weeks ago. At least some of us have taste though
I think it's interesting how so often, people consider their musical tastes as the best. Not to be critical to you guys or The Who. It's just interesting that you could put that very comment after a Maralyn Manson song, or a Bach piece and you'd get the exact same response. It's not bad. Just interesting.
First time I heard Join Together, I was 16 learning English in Oxford. Since then I have been a fan of the Who. And I finally saw them in stage in Washington DC in 2000. My dream had finally come true. Even though Keith was long gone. But it was Zak Starr at the drums. Ringo's son.

Rock history at it's finest, Great song, Great group.
I wish I knew Keith Moon and Bon Scott when I was younger it would be the greatest ever!
Hell yes!! Party with them too! 🤘
Still listening in 2020 and I am sure it will still be as incredible in 2099
20020
It was just a great Summer song to crank on your car radio on a hot summer evening while cruisin' with friends. This got up to #12 in L.A. in August 1972 lasting 7 Weeks on the chart. Got up to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
2021
Still listening 2022 that intro tho
This is without doubt the greatest group in the world
Close. Zeppelins the best.
Saw Led Zeppelin live. Saw The Who live. Many times...The Who, hands down, the better band, imho. But each to his own.
@@sdc6447 clearly Zeppelin is the best but Who for sure is on the MT Rushmore: Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones and the Who
Zeppelin was a cover band.
Every group covers bonehead
Keith looks bloody good looking and so smart in this
I grew up a Huge Who fan!!!! 45 years later still am😊
Chills up your spine, anyone?
Love how this song combines the standard rock group lineup with "primitive" instruments (harmonica and jaw harp) as well as the synthesizer. Perfect blend of past, present, and future.
Jews' harp
Grew up with these guys and still listening at 67
Me too !
The Who ; They dominated the 60's , 70's ,..they could have owned the 80's if they wanted to !!
this is the greatest band ever. and the loudest...
christina riley nope
christina riley My favorite Who song! 👍✌.
Felix Jest
Yes and you suck
Literally! They held the World Record for "Loudest Concert measured in Decibels" or something like that for like 20 years or so (?) from the 1970s.
I think the only other bands to break that record were some Metal bands from the 90s
Right on both counts, Christina!
"Do you really think I care?" Absolutely one of their best songs! John playing lead on bass!!!!! Amazing.
When I was a little kid in the 70s, this was my favorite song by them, for some reason. Maybe because it reminded me a bit of Three Dog Night and bullfrogs named Jeremiah. (Give me a break, I was 4 in 1972)
I was born in 68 also. Incredible time to be a kid..
@@Biden_Cult_Morons Born in 1957 here. The mid-1960s to 1979 was the best time for Rock music hands down!
Me in '54, Yes the WHO & TDN were Powerfull bands. Yep That Jeremiah He was a friend of Mine . too. Any One elses?
And Don't Forget JIMI, & the Guess Who..........
@@Nomadcreations Jeremiah was my friend too.
I can crank up this song anytime
Nobody, but nobody is better than The Who. I can say this after 4 decades of listening to all kinds of music in volume- classical, jazz, electronic, pop, world music, new age.
if this doesn't get you off your ass and dance your dead!
00
This one, like many Who songs, gets better with volume. Like a beautiful kick to the teeth.
Plug your PC into an Amp/Receiver, get rid of the PC speakers!!
1i1feat I've blown up more amps with a PC than anything else over the years. Digital music loves power but some passages are deadly to power transistors within rated specifications. Push the limits at your own peril.
Ive had amps hooked up to my desktop for 15 years. Only way to go
ha!!! i seriously just got done cranking it then read your comment first! spot on!!!
Townsend's songwriting maximized the talents of all four members of this incredible band.
He brought the best out of everyone.
This is one of my favorite Who songs of all time! Each member aptly contributed to the band’s unique raw, rock ‘n’ roll sound!!! Keith is amazing on this record. Love The Who!!!
I love seeing Entwistle playing that Gibson Thunderbird.
+Jim Nesta It's an Alembic.
I want one off those things really bad what are they called Gibson thunderbird or.....
+Jim Nesta --- Yesss! My favorite bass of his. :)
How in the hell could not say this is one of the best bands of all times?😊
They had such a wide spacious sound. When you close your eyes, you can perceive a large horizon. And no I'm not on anything.
One of my favorite Daltrey songs to sing
I used to love it when these guys' music would come on the radio at work and someone would ask: "Who sings this?", and I'd be like "Yep."
WHAT'S On 2nd?😀!!! I DON'T KNOW, ....THIRD BASE!💗✨😅
This song came on the other day and I said to my wife if she knew who sang this. She said she did not know. I said it wasn't a question.
Happy Friday everyone and what a classic song to start a Friday morning with have a safe and happy weekend cheers everyone.
The who the doors and jimi make me feel nostalgic about an era I wasnt even alive for. The late 60s and early 70s was the best time for music in my opinion.
As a African American love this song although I did not graduate from high school at my reunion were said take a picture with us they played this song
I hope true rock and roll makes a come back from the depths of crap that exists today. The 70's was the decade where music truly exploded. The 60's gave us the start, but the 70's truly was the best music ever produced.
Pete was born to play guitar. He just looks pure and natural.
I'd say more like "Pure and Easy!"
Gary Goetz Sr Except in one note
Pete townshend is one the best
He is a single symphony of music, in my opinion!
hate to burst your bubble, but pete townshend is anything but pure, if you know what i mean, haha... only playing, he's actually my favorite guitarist of all time.
Friends in a local band busted this and Love Reign over me at a bar show year's ago.
Brought the house down!
Entswhistle.. the greatest bassist ever
my first husband, a bassist always said John was a lead bass player and he (my ex) did his best to follow his style. Did pretty well now that II look back. I'm in awe every time i watch him play.
From the beatles to the stones and the who and the kinks we gave the world the greatest music ever
Man it's tough to watch one of the most ferocious live bands of all time mime a performance. Pete looks like he's enjoying himself though! Love that SG!
An SG looks good on pete, don't it!
Those were the days my friends, I thought they'd never end.
So good to see the late Keith Moon after so many years.
Pete's stage moves beginning at 0:50 are just the best
2:12 loL watch Moonie do a drumstick flip and drop it
He did it on purpose 😂
Women were so beautiful back then.
Rock and roll bands will come and go it's the fucking who you got on your phone
Beautiful and real
Daltrey has one of most powerful voices in rock and roll history, a real one for sure.
Women still are beautiful.
@@scarpfish But, I must agree with et4287, with my nostalgic glasses on, they were so beautiful back then.
This seems to be one of their most overlooked hits as I haven't heard it on the radio in probably 20 years in the USA. Not a flop by any means as it reached #17 in Sept, 1972. Great memories.
0:00 - 0:34 the craziest intro to any song, awesomely epic!
The Who=Pure power
Man, I wish I got to see them. My dad turned me on to them and all my early music. Pink Floyd, ELO, HENDRIX, SO MANY others. He never missed a Who show when they came to Boston
I discovered The Who with this song. I was 16 and since then I barely spend a week without listening to them. I was 16 in 1972. So make the math
Bass riff is heavenly here.
Oh yes. That's one of the all-time great bass lines.
So is the band!!!!😎❤👍
The last century has produced such madly good musicians that I can not even imagine that there will be such a thing again?
Sigh
Another sigh . . .
Never
The Who at their very best.
Doesn't get any better than this
I SAW THEM BACK in The 70s GREATEST ENGLISH !!!!!STREET ROCK !!!!BAND EVER PERIOD !!!!!😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁g
Thanks.
...well said...!
All join together with the Band…
I jam out to this every day on the bus along with other The Who hits. I'm in eighth grade so it's hard to find one who has the same music interests as me.
I know the feels. I'm in college though first year but no one really has the same passion for rock and roll as I do. I love The Who sad that next year is the farewell tour. I'm still saving up money to buy my ticket but I'll be there no matter what.
Tell me about it i'm in 4rth grade and the music they here is awfull
I was in the same boat when I was your age. Actually, even at 27 it's still the same. I went to see them by myself a couple of weeks ago. At least some of us have taste though
I think it's interesting how so often, people consider their musical tastes as the best. Not to be critical to you guys or The Who. It's just interesting that you could put that very comment after a Maralyn Manson song, or a Bach piece and you'd get the exact same response. It's not bad. Just interesting.
good for you kid , i love the who and kieth moon was a beast on the drums
I'm 46 and I'm glad my parents raised me around this music and this real music
Do you really think I care what you read or wear?! Eternal lyrics.
3:04 gotta love John's smile 😀
Every time I play this video, I get such a kick out of watching Keith Moon.
I love the way the who songs build and build and build then just explode
Words can't describe it. I listened to this song before football practice in 1972. It was inspirational.
Great song please check out The Who - Who's Next Album Review on my channel
