- Tamiya Rising Fighter vs Tamiya DT03 in Round 1 Match 1 on the Orchard Raceway for 2023.
DT03 cleaned up on the poll with 80% of the votes going in its direction.
This should be a easy victory for the hopped up model but don’t write off the Rising Fighter as it has also had a fair bit of improvements and tinkering. - Zábava
Shocking!!! The hopper comes good on the day! Great fun out there Craig and a very interesting watch indeed. The DT03 did look to be struggling out there but the RF just merrily bounced it's way around, I think it was smiling all the way! looking forward to the next one already! :))
Hey Mark, it was doing it’s thing out there and was really fun to drive. Problem with the hopping is the corners become unpredictable 😂 The DT03 was robbed and will be back to fight another day I am sure. I have had some great advice on setting it up better for the OR so I will get to work on that during the off weeks this season and we’ll try and tune it up ready for 2024!! Until then the RF is our first OR Giant Killer 😎

Hey Jeremy! Neither did I! I could tell as I was driving that the DT03 seemed to struggle for traction but even when stitching a good lap it was slower than before. There is a drive train fault which cost it I think but that is how these things go! Thanks for watching dude 👍🏻🙌🏻

Hey Robbie, thanks for the positive feedback pal! Yeah there were some issues for last years runner up but those are the breaks! The Rising Fighter runs again and is now officially a giant killer on the OR!

Hey pal, you and many others including me were wrong! The DT03 on paper is ahead but something was off with the car on the day. It will be back for sure and I am going to give it some TLC over the summer and get it humming again! Brushed motor back and full rebuild
Nice head to head race and not terribly surprised by the results. The DT03 does suffer on small tight tracks due to its light front end. Now that you have the Rising Fighter pretty well sorted out it is a good running buggy. Looking forward to the next run!
Hey Addam, I love the DT03 as it was the first RC I had getting back into the hobby but for some reason it is suffering at the moment. It has the most miles on it as I drove it solely for over a year so I am going to give it a strip down and reset for 2024. It will be back!!
The rising fighter is a beast given at heart it is a hopper! I think it will be undone in Round 2 though! Wait until you see the times set by some of the cars 🔥🔥🔥
Love it my friend. Track is tight so things like drag brake and soft front bits also might be helpful. Also...huge improvement with the editing and cam work. IT'S RACE SEASON!
Hey dude! Thanks for the appreciation pal! I know you understand what goes into shooting these videos and the preparation time. I would love a little more space to stretch the cars legs but this track is so tight it really tests my skill. What I am already understanding is how important the exp setting is on the controller as it removes loads of sensitivity in the steering and allows for better control of it is dialled down.
It is going to be one heck of a race season dude 😎

Slow is Fast!!! I guessed right... Awesome video Craig!!!! Let the races begin.... It's a smaller, tighter track.. My guess is, cars with less power will have faster lap times and/or make all the laps. Of course, I say this without getting technical about suspension settings. However, I did say off-road is softer than on-road and traction might be a factor.
Hey Bob, glad you enjoyed match 1! It is a really tight track but when you have a car that soaks up the bumps they really fly round this one!! Taking out the jump was the right move as the flow is so much better. Can’t wait until you guys get to see the next match up!!

Hey nice one Craig. I would have expected the DT-03 to win all day long as that chassis handles way better but anything can happen as you have proved. I reckon the Rising Fighter could do with shorter softer springs on the back although like you say it's always going to be a hopper. I don't know if they are the JKRC shocks but I got some of those and the springs were miles too hard for these light Tamiyas but I managed to sort them with some softer Tamiya springs. Anyway, great start to the season mate 😁👍👍
Hey Pete, the DT03 suffered a gearbox failure which hampered performance. There is plenty of tuning to go with these two. I am going to spend the summer with the DT03 as last year it was amazing.
They are JKRC shocks so I will have a look at some softer springs. Thanks for the great post dude 👍🏻🙌🏻
Always liked the hoppers and the rising fighter has great classic lines. I know it's been lightly modified, but still slightly surprised me with those lap times. Like the DT-03 too. That brushless probably really rocks on a longer flatter run.
The Rising Fighter is a fun runner but the DT03 should have done better. It will be back looking for revenge in 2024. The RF came stuck in the QF unfortunately but it will be out again next year! Check out the Frog tomorrow though 🙌🏻
Oh, yes! The season is started! And definitely with an underdog taking first win! To be honest, I was expecting the '03 to struggle with understeer on that tight track, but even with weight up front and those amazing front tyres, it still disappointed... But as you said, it is what it is... Looking forward to watching some more!
Hey Mads, you called it dude. The DT03 needs some tuning in the off season and I think it could be better. The Rising Fighter has quite a lot of love last year and it shows now. A far more confident hopper and I was really surprised by it. I will have to push it hard in round 2 though!!

I think perhaps the technical issue with the DT-03 drive train did have an impact in its time, but I still think that the shorter wheelbase of the Rising Fighter, suited the revised Orchard Raceway track. Hey Mattias, it was a close contest really with less than half a second but the DT03 has a running issue. I will spend some of the summer months tweaking the car ready for next year. It will be back I am sure! Will the Rising Fighter make it through round 2??

Hey Brent, I really enjoy these head to heads as you know. They often uncover hidden RC gems like the Rising Fighter! Although this one has been tuned up a little to be more than a hopper 😁

Wait until you see some of the other buggies out on the track! There are some absolute monsters that are so easy to thread through the turns 😎

Nice! I was a little surprised that the DT-03 didn't do better. Or maybe I was surprised the Rising Fighter did so well ( it being rough terrain, and it having high CG compared to the DT-03. Excellent!
Good point in the CG Mauzy! It is an old school track to ground clearance is important. Wonder if last years winner will suffer as the TT02B has no ride height at all!

What a result for the rising fighter ! :) realistically the dt03 should have the RF licked. Providing there’s no problem in the gearbox Etc you could try a minispike front tyre like on the rear , if you’re running on grass Etc make sure you have inserts in all your tyres. You could also try a softer front spring or try some softer oil in the front shocks. Also make sure when your cars turning the car isn’t digging into the ground because you don’t have enough GC. I don’t know how much Braking you were using but you need to brake correctly to get the weight to transfer properly so the 2wd buggy gets round the corner properly. Besides all that cracking video Craig well done fella
See and this is why I am a complete novice Andy!! The DT03 deserves some love and I think during the off season I am going to set up the timing systems and just practice with this one.
Last year it was set up really nicely but over the last year or so it seems to have lost its edge. Tyres are work and the gearbox has gone loose so it needs some love.
I had it digging in so much on the grass I had to back things off a little and wonder if the mixture of dirt/grass on the OR means it is not set right.

Great race. Maybe the handling of a car os mpre worth on your course than speed. This'll gonna ne a hreat season. The Ultima looks good, too.
Hey Dirk, you are right the handling of the cars is much more important plus the initial acceleration being smooth and easy to control. We’ll see a different set of better performing buggies on the OR than on other tracks I am sure.
I did not expect the Rising Fighter to win! The DT-03 struggled with the tighter corners. I might be due to its longer wheelbase. Nevertheless, a well -deserved victory for the RF. 👍
Hey David, I thought I had tuned out some of the under steer but apparently not enough! There was an issue on the drive train also which needs solving. RF is now a OR Giant Killer and will be one to watch in round 2! It actually handles the rough track really well! Lots to be said for that hopper… wonder if the Frog will fair well against the DF03???? 😁😜

I think it's one of Tamiya's famous cars.
It will be back to have another shot next year! The Orchard Raceway is throwing up some very interesting results. It is not all about one hot lap but about consistency so I need to work on getting the cars set up to run the same lap after lap!

Hey Toby, complete shock to me!! The DT03 has suffered a mechanical fault somewhere in the drive train so I am sure it will be back stronger next season! But for now the Rising Fighter is the first giant killer of round 1!

Not the results I would have expected. Your smaller track wasn't well suited for the power of the brushless Rising Fighter. Just proves the point that speed and power don't win races. A proper set-up and a good driver wins races.
Hey Arky, you are right it is all about the right car for the right track. Also for the way I am scoring the Orchard Raceway consistency will play a part also. I am finding some cars can do lap after lap and be very close to their best times. Others spike wildly from one to the other!
