That was a good video lots of info on it keep them coming
Thanks for watching!!
I would love to give this bike a try. Thanks for the review !!
Thanks for watching!!
I have a 2021 9.5 myself! The XT shifter ($65), SLX crank 170mm ($105), 760mm riser bars ($50-200), and oval chainring ($70) are the best upgrades for your dollar. I also did a SiD SL Ultimate ($850) and it saved over 2 pounds, literally. The bike started to excessively wheelie on climbs with the fork/bars but the oval chainring cured most of that issue.
Nice upgrades! Yeah fork is first on my list, but may do more next year, also look into wheels. Where did you buy the fork, bike shop or online?
Thank you 😊
Great video 👍
Thanks for watching!!
Congrats on the new bike. Looks awesome. I was gonna ask you how it compares to the Exceed and which one represents the better value but I originally posted this before watching the last 30 seconds of the video. I'll just wait until you put out your comparison video.
Concerning geometry, I've only recently become aware of chainstay length vs reach and how they can affect the ride. What is your preference or position on that and do you take that into consideration when deciding on which bike to purchase? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I am generally a fan of the longer reach and shorter chainstay length trends in the industry. This bike doesn’t really push those limits, but feels really good to me as an XC bike. A lot of that will be dependent on a persons body type (torso length, etc). Yes the Canyon vs Trek video will come soon and explain the differences between them, and why I bought the Trek after having the Canyon. Stay tuned!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Will do. Thank you.
Picked up the 9.8 with Carbon wheels and better front fork (2023 model) it's very good tbh, Coming from a heavy upgraded Gaint Fathom E2+ E bike running fotus 30 wheel set and fox 34 teams this bike feels like that bike does in eco up the climbs it's very good.
Great review! Why isn't the fork good on gravel? Would the Procaliber 9.6 Recon RL Gold DebonAir setup be any better on gravel?
The fork works surprisingly well on moderate/bigger hits, especially when fully open. On gravel, it doesn’t seem to be great on the fast high frequency action that gravel causes. Which makes sense because higher quality forks are much more refined for those types of things. I suspect the RL Gold would be better, but probably only marginally. The Reba that I have on my Canyon is noticeably better on gravel.
Hi, I have the same model only from 2021 - its basicly the same except colour, I upgraded the dropper post and I can only recommend this step. In area where I live and what I ride it is well worth it. and yes the decoupler seems to work.
Yeah I may well do the dropper, front fork is my priority right now though, did you change the fork?
not yet. I also changed contact points (personal preference) and I tried a shorter stem. Fork is ok-ish, but yes later I would probably change it, mostly bexause of its weight - but Its more expensive upgrade so it has to wait for some time.
and I also put some end-bar-horns to the inside of bars so it looks terible, but it serves the purpose (mostly on straight tarmac sections) , its the same concept as moloko bars.

@@tiborbencat9819 That was basically my take on the fork as well, better than expected performance, but extremely heavy. I’m not a weight weenie but cutting 1.5lbs off the fork should be pretty significant, and performance will still improve too. Not stoked to spend another $500+ on it but once it’s done it’ll be good to go
exactly. and probably I try some oval front ring. I never tried one before
What frame protection wad added? I’m interested with 9.6 coming next week.
I usually use something like this one. Enjoy the bike!
amzn.to/3JpEQrX
The Judy can go to 120 with spacer removal, I like it at 120 much more.
Interesting. I actually just swapped it out for a 100mm Reba, which was over 2lbs lighter even with a remote lock out.
I need that Exceed comparison. Im considering switching my son from an Exceed to Procaliber as he is out growing the Exceed. Can you give me a quick thought on the two?
It’s on my short list! Quick thought? Both are great bikes, so there is no major advantage or flaw to either. Personally, I like the ISOSpeed on the Trek, and the traditional seatpost clamp collar. The Exceed seatpost clamp is slick and looks super cool, but I started having issues with the seatpost sliding down, no matter what or how much carbon paste I used. The in frame style of the clamp would be catastrophic if over tightened, so that wasn’t an option.
I put my 16 yr old son on a 9.7. Switched the wheels with crank brothers with 1-1 I9 hubs. He eats up the trails and has won 2 majors with it. He only races casually and he treats his bike like a beast. It’s a wonderful bike for an extremely aggressive rider. He will crush full squish riders all day long! He started with a 9.6 but cracked his frame in 21’. (Warranty to a 2023 9.7). Super happy with it.
Yeah we ended up on the Procaliber 9.7 a year ago and it's served him well. The lower standover helps I'm maneuvering. I think he'd benefit from a dropper post but he's a weight weenie and doesn't want to give up his carbon post. We did swap in the new 3P SID SL Ultimate. It's so much smoother than the Reba, and he likes the grip shifter better. Replaced the bar and stem with a one-piece carbon Bontrager RSL. The weight difference on the front end is very noticeable.
Is the specialized EPIC Hard tail a good option ? Is the bottom bracket better ?
Specialed makes great bikes, so yes definitely a good option. The lowest spec bike is a little more expensive with a similar build spec as the Procal, but yes it does have a threaded BB, which is generally my preference, but the press fit BB’s I have had in recent years have all been fine and quiet.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks
Did you ever or do you know which dropper you will put in? I just picked mine up this weekend.
I have not added one yet. I have a PNW Rainier on another bike that has been decent so far, but when the time comes I will look at everything again for this bike. The One Up droppers are supposed to be pretty good too for the money.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Thank you for the quick response!
Hello I want to ask you what bike would you pick....the trek x caliber 7 ( 650 euros ) or the specialized carve pro ( 800 euros )?
That would be tough for me to answer, I don’t think we get the Carve Pro here in North America currently. I can say the X-caliber is a solid starter bike. I would suggest you to buy the best bike you can for your budget, and if you can test ride both even better.
I have a ride that's mostly suburban streets, many of which have large pieces of broken road and gravel, and some potholes, along with a few spots of loose gravel, and smooth pavement. Would this bike do OK with that? Or would I run out of gear too quick and go too slow? In other words, would it be overkill?
The bike can definitely do it, but it does sound like a gravel bike with more top end speed would probably be better. It really depends on how fast and efficient you want to be, and your preference on a flat bar MTB vs a drop bar more road oriented bike. I do ride this bike in the neighborhood occasionally and I don’t really want for more gearing.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Thank you for your reply! I have a Trek FX3 (2022) currently. It's a bit lighter but it has a 1x drivetrain and runs a bit faster. I can ride it up to about 17 MPH flat out (I'm slow) but I can see how I may be slower on the MTB
Just A question before I delete the comment. Is buying a Procaliber really a good idea? I weight 240 pounds and I keep thinking the frame will break. Wouldn't buying a X Caliber be a better? I mean I don't think I'll have a Problem with aluminum.
I believe Trek sets a rider weight limit of 300lbs for most of their bikes, and you are well below that. These days carbon frames are pretty stout in their construction, so it’s not something I would have any concern over. I’m not sure a moderate quality alloy frame would be any stronger, in fact possibly more susceptible to failing. If you are will to pay more for the Procal and want it’s benefits, I say go for it!
Do you miss the rear suspension? Do you wish you had gone XC fs like the supercaliber?
So far I don’t miss rear suspension or regret selling my FS bike. Even though I think the Supercaliber is awesome, it really is a race bike, and is pretty pricey. It also requires a fair amount of effort to service that rear shock (basically disassembling the entire rear end) so that put me off a bit too.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend didn’t think of that it certainly looks intricate .
Thanks for review.
Btw...bikes are better held by seatpost on a bike work stand. I'm not being a dick posting this: it's actually just folk watching your videos should know. You'll break frame holding it there especislky carbon. Great review man. Thanks alot
Much appreciated! And yes, anytime I actually work on the bike in the stand I use the seatpost. It was literally just balanced on the stand (and not clamped) for the video to get it up off the floor.
Roscoe 8 or this? Im ready to pull the pin on both. Ill be riding light trails and some street type of riding. Thank you boys.
I recently reviewed the Roscoe 7, and rode that back to back with this Procal. If you are riding light trails and some pavement then the Procal is the better bike.
@ElevationEveryWeekend thank you. Why not the roscoe 8? Im just curious. I wanted to put some Schwable Hurricanes on the 8. 29" by 2.4 and use it to commute/play on the weekends. I do like the Roscoe 8 but it does scare me a bit by its big tires. Thank you brother.
@@MikP86 I wouldn’t say the Roscoe 8 can’t work, but if you focus is lighter trails and pavement the Procal is much lighter and will roll much faster, in stock form without changing tires. I have been impressed by the stock Bontrager XR2’s on the Procal. The Roscoe is really designed to be best on rougher more aggressive trails. Check out this video it’ll give you a good comparison on the Roscoe and Procal. I am planning a dedicated head to head too.
czcams.com/video/4G_d7bh_1aE/video.html
@ElevationEveryWeekend thank you brother.
Would suggest clamping to the seat post rather than the top tube
Yeah it wasn’t clamped in there it was just balanced, and the front tire was resting on a stool too to take up some weight
What's your height? Which size you chose? Tnx!
I am 5’11”, this bike is a large and fits great
@@ElevationEveryWeekend as me, but I find it too big and dull. It's not a nimble bike, can drive just straight..
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Can you use dropper post with iso speed?
Yes you can, it is fully outside of the seat tube so no problem at all for a dropper.
Yes. I have a dropper on my 2022 ProCal 9.5
Yes, I've fitted one without issue. There is routing within the frame so it's a doddle to install internally actuated droppers.
Would you take this bike on the Colorado Trail bikepacking?
I’m sure it could do it, but it would not be my first choice. I would prefer something a little more purpose built for that. A travel CZcams channel I follow did the CT and one of them used a Niner hardtail 29er and it did just fine.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Kara and Nate? ☺️
@@RicardoRibeiroAlves yep that was them!
The FORK is pretty good no need to upgrade
It was pretty decent from a performance standpoint, however the RockShox Reba I replace it with was a full 2lbs lighter, and I am really liking it on this bike now
Weight?
It was just over 26lbs without pedals (I actually put that in my first look video and didn’t re-weigh for the review). Thanks for watching!
CanI ask if in your opinions the pro caliber 9.5 has better components than this scott? czcams.com/video/f2uUk36V5vY/video.html ...
I’d say it’s very similar to the Procal on the parts spec, but at $1700 definitely much cheaper than the Procal. Can’t really speak to the carbon frame specs on the Scott, but looks like a great bike to me for that price.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks, would you consider the presence of ISO Speed on the pro cal be much better than not having it in the scott?
@@budspencer7540 While I do like the IsoSpeed, I consider it nice to have not need to have. It’s a subtle difference.
